Regents professor to perform premiere of alumnus’ concerto
P
amela Mia Paul, regents professor of music at the University of North Texas and concert pianist, will perform the world premiere of the concerto she commissioned. The piece? Concerto for Piano, Orchestral Winds and Percussion. The composer? UNT alumnus Steven Bryant, who studied under Cindy McTee, UNT regents professor of composition. Paul said it’s exciting to be a classical music performer who gets to work with a living composer. The piece includes two movements. The first builds gradually to a big peak, then “quietly goes on its way,” Paul
Bryant
Paul
said. The second movement incorporates jazz. Bryant used a descending set of five dyads — or two-note chords — that are used to build the music in both movements. Bryant, who earned a master of music degree in composition from UNT in 1996 and credits McTee with contributing to his success as a composer. “In addition to her excellent insights into viewing and expe-
riencing time in music, she was a stickler for the detailed preparation of the score and parts,” Bryant said. “Her tutelage was equal parts musical and practical, and I believe this has been significant to my sustained career as a freelance composer.” Bryant plans to attend the premiere performance, as well as a Friday recording session for the composition. Paul performs with the UNT Wind Symphony at 7:30 p.m. today in Winspear Hall at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, located along Interstate 35 East at Avenue D and North Texas Boulevard. Tickets cost $8 to $10. — Lucinda Breeding

Misery loves company, and Huntington Beach, Calif., band La Dispute has plenty. The band is the headliner in the Parade of Flesh showcase at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Saturday.
Deep into the shadows La Dispute’s latest album probes depths of the tragic By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor
La Dispute’s latest release, Wildlife, reads like a love letter to a shadow. The only problem is that lead singer Jordan Dreyer isn’t so sure who, or what, is casting the long, dark shadow. “I used to never think of death / or hear voices,” Dreyer screams — the songs always erupt into rasping screams. “I used to feel like everything was perfectly in order / a normal life / I guess there came a departure.” So Wildlife exhumes past hurts, present disappointments and the random tragedies — a schizophrenic son stabs his elderly father during a psychotic break, and more than one dead teenager is memorialized, here — that knock the wind out of the sturdiest communities. The Huntington Beach, Calif., band — born in Grand Rapids, Mich., as it were — bills itself as an indie punk outfit that is heavy on experimentation. La Dispute stops in Denton on Saturday night, a recruit of the Dallas-based production compa-

ny, Parade of Flesh. Joining Balance and Composure, All Get Out and Sainthood Reps., La Dispute is set to crack the plaster at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio. The punk label fits Dreyer’s over-heated bellows, but the music itself is all alternative rock, evoking the ultra-mournful, baritone guitar licks of Tool and the sad, noisy nostalgia of Pink Floyd.
If La Dispute is indeed a punk group, it’s not so much about grating on the nerves of “The Man” as it is about moving the young masses to contemplate the uncertain things of life, and how they hurt, please and take you unawares. In “The Most Beautiful Bitter Fruit,” the band gives an upbeat tempo to a song about the night bringing out the least in the narrator as he seeks out a soulless hook-up: “No love / no life / no history / just touch, just chemistry / Just a roaring undercurrent, simple and sensory / Young bodies, warm skin, perfect symmetry / And it’s a moment harmless, it’s energy / It’s like medicine / it’s self discovery.” Doors open at 7 p.m. Saturday. Cover is $12 for ages 21 and up, and is $14 for ages 20 and under. Rubber Gloves is located at 411 E. Sycamore St. Sounds like: The Toadies officiating the funerals of too many innocents, going away after a mad, exhausting tantrum. Goes good with: You, a punching bag and all the rage making that vein in your temple tick like a bomb.

OPENING FRIDAY
Lockout (##1/2) If a futuristic space prison with 500 of the world’s most violent and dangerous criminals cryogenically frozen was to somehow undergo an inmate revolt, who would emerge as the unquestioned leader of such an intergalactic gang of gruesome murders? Why the Scots, of course. At least that’s according to this sci-fi circa 2079 action flick, directed by a pair of Irish filmmakers: James Mather and Stephen St. Leger. They co-wrote it with producer Luc Besson. The MS One is a hulking, orbiting jail that puts its prisoners in “stasis,” or a deep sleep. But when the president’s daughter (Maggie Grace) visits to question its methods, a prisoner easily gets loose and soon the ship is overrun by criminals who immediately fall in line behind the Scottish Alex (Vincent Regan) and his more psychotic sibling Hydell (Joe Gilgun). Obviously, such awkward circumstances can only be resolved by a solo, heroic mission from a reluctant, irascible protagonist. Ours is Snow (Guy Pearce), an agent who has been unjustly deemed a criminal after a mission gone wrong. This is a brawnier Pearce (L.A. Confidential, Mildred Pierce), and if Lockout is meant as an action hero audition, he certainly has the needed charisma. He’s the only reason to see the film. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes. — The Associated Press
NOW PLAYING
Titanic in 3-D (####) If any film should be redone in 3-D, it’s Titanic. And if any filmmaker should be the one doing the redoing, it’s James Cameron. And so ironically, for a film that hasn’t got an ounce of understatement in its three-hourplus running time, Titanic in 3-D is really rather subtle and finely tuned. Cameron has stayed true to the content of his 1997 film, the winner of 11 Oscars including best picture — and that includes his clunky script filled with hokey dialogue and broad characters. What also remains intact is the earnestness of Titanic, the absence of snark or irony, and the sensation that you’re watching a big, ambitious, goodold-fashioned spectacle that can withstand the test of time. Rated PG-13, 195 minutes. — AP

Fran Kranz, Chris Hemsworth and Anna Hutchison are shown in a scene from The Cabin in the Woods.
Out of the woodwork By Boo Allen Film Critic
Whedon, Goddard set ’em up, knock ’em down in ‘Cabin’
Breaking convention can be great fun. And the new horror flick The Cabin in the Woods does that, taking gleeful delight in puncturing those tired and formulas of the genre. This Cabin could rightfully be called a horror satire, but one like the Scream movies in which an actual tale of horror plays out while all the proscribed rules are examined and, in this case, set into play by an unseen hand. Joss Whedon, creator of TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, co-wrote Cabin, bringing along his knack for transporting the supernatural to the everyday normal. Co-writer and first-time feature director Drew Goddard complements Whedon’s vision by keeping the film grounded until, in the end, it looks like he simply cannot control himself any longer as he finally unleashes a comically overstocked closet full of monsters. Whedon and Goddard begin with a keen eye towards an established horror recipe:
The Cabin in the Woods Rated R, 95 minutes. Opens Friday.
five handsome young people arrive at an isolated cabin in the woods for a weekend. Along the way, they meet the requisite creepy freak at the gas station. Then, they arrive at a dilapidated old structure in the middle of nowhere. With all the cliches in place, the script follows a standard path, setting up a scenario in which some malignant force will then appear to wipe out the group. The writers show their familiarity not only with this standard American trope, but they also
pause long enough to show their ghoulish erudition by tossing in references to popular Asian schoolgirl phantoms, Swedish vampires and several other international favorites. But they throw a curve by setting up a control central, a main location in which everything has been planned down to which method will be used for the coming carnage. The command center looks to be some sort of governmental agency run by a couple of irreverent meatballs, deliciously played against type by Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. And to compound the egregious aspects of the enterprise, the entire organization runs a betting pool on the winning predator — zombie, vampire, Jason, Freddy, and so on. Much more goes on during Cabin than can be described here, but it is a movie that begs not to be taken seriously, which we won’t. But we will enjoy it. Big dreams Denton Community Theatre takes a chance on Alcott’s classic By Lucinda Breeding
Features Editor ousia May Alcott indebted herself to readers when she published Little Women in 1869. The creative team of Allen Knee, Mindi Dickstein and Jason Howland brought a new surge of interest to the novel in 2005 when the musical they adapted from Alcott’s novel opened on Broadway. Denton Community Theatre opened its staging of Little Women over the Easter holiday and it runs through this weekend. Buster Maloney, a Denton performer probably best known for his comedic chops in the Greater Tuna, took on his first musical with the March women. “I read the book when I was 10 years old, and I just loved the story,” Maloney said.

LITTLE WOMEN
Little Women “Of course, I grew up with five older sisters, and they spoiled me. And also, my mother’s maiden name was ‘March,’ and my grandmother was very much like Auntie March. Maloney said there was another reason he wanted to try his first musical with Alcott’s classic. “I just love working with women, he said. “I love it. I really enjoy watching them become the best performers they can be. Little Women the musical has a lot in common with Little Women the novel. The four sisters — Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy — look to their beloved mother, Marmee, to run their Concord, Mass., home while their father is serving in the Civil War. Told through the eyes of the adventurous tomboy and aspiring writer, Jo, the musical is about a family leaning on love, industriousness and imagination during lean and uncertain times. Jo is a woman caught up in a century of rapid change. As she cherishes her sisters and hopes to sell her stories to contribute, she struggles with the blooming affection of her best friend and the boy next door, Laurie. Is marriage and motherhood her destiny, or can she be a writer who has a husband
and home? Little Women hasn’t hurt for adaptations. Mervyn LeRoy directed the 1949 film (starring June Allyson and Peter Lawford), and director Gillian Armstrong led Susan Sarandon and Winona Ryder through the story in the 1994 film. Denton Community Theatre gave studious attention to the show’s designs — Nelda Evarts produced the 19th centurystyle costumes, and music director Ray Staniszewski guides the orchestra through a score that is contemporary Broadway (composer Howland was an intern during the workshop of Frank Wildhorn’s Jekyll & Hyde, and it shows). “One thing I love about the show is that it’s a very vivid picture of life in the 1860s, particularly in the novel, he said. “Nelda Evarts costumes are just beautiful, and she took this on wanting it to be really great. We really see the family trying to make it during the Civil War. Their fathers were off in the Civil War and I think that was part of it as well. The family’s trials and triumphs are told through Jo: Meg’s marriage and twin babies, Amy’s conceit, and Beth’s sweetness and fragility. The family’s struggle alternate with Jo’s fanciful, melodramat-

ic stories of adventure. And then there’s Marmee, the mother hen to an adoring flock of chicks. He lauded Denton singer and actress Maria Harris (The Sound of Music) for both her vocal pyrotechnics and the emotional heft she brings to the role. “Maria’s stage presence is so strong, he said. “As soon as she walks onto the stage, the girls just gather around her like little birds. But you feel her influence in the play, just like you feel [Marmee’s] influence in the novel. Just her strength of character. You see her doubt, wondering if she’s doing the right thing. She really has doubt about the way she’s rais-
ing these women, and that makes her really very human. The music propels the story. “Astonishing finds Jo dealing with her relationship with Laurie. “Some Things Are Meant to Be puts the family’s greatest tragedy into a single song. “Small Umbrella in the Rain conveys the baby of the family, Amy, growing up. “I think it’s a beautiful show. The set, the story, the music, Maloney said. “That’s what people say when they leave the theater. They say it’s beautiful. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877.
