In the planned spot, not only will more people be able to attend shows, but enthusiastic (or tipsy) patrons won’t be tempted to climb the lone tree at the former lawn. TWU opens musical ‘Robber Bridegroom’

T

exas Woman’s University has opened the musical The Robber Bridegroom, which runs through this weekend. Based on the Eudora Welty novel of the same name, the bluegrass musical comedy tells the story of Jamie Lockhart — the “Bandit of the Wood” by night and a gentleman caller by day. Lockhart means to con a wealthy landowner and woo his lovely daughter at the same time. The tale begins with “Once Upon the Natchez Trace,” and by the song’s conclusion, the modern-day inhabitants of Rodney, Miss., transform into the colorful citizens of 1795 who inhabit the historical path. There’s Goat, the stupidest boy on the Trace; Salome, unchallenged in her ability to grow fingernails; Little Harp, who carries his brother Big Harp’s head in a trunk while singing “Two Heads are Better than One”; and Rosamund, who at any moment might be eaten by a panther. Directed by TWU assistant professor Steven Young, the musical features Hunter Balch, Averie Bell, Julia Bodiford, Logan Broker, Jonathan Bryant, Jonathan Charles, Ariana Cook, Ryan Davilla, Paul Engle, Rachel Fore, Emily Johns, Marygail Lakner, Celi Radillo, Rene Serradet, Shane Strawbridge and Jo’Von Wright. Set design is by Jeff Franks. Performances will be at 4 p.m. today, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Kyle Park returns to Rockin’ Rodeo tonight. This time around, the Texas musician has claim on the Texas Music Charts.

Western romantic Kyle Park returns to Denton with ‘Make or Break Me’

I

t hasn’t been long since allAmerican Texas country artist Kyle Park has stopped in Denton. Park pulls back up to Denton’s Rockin’ Rodeo today for another spin in the city’s most country and Red Dirtcentric venue. Park is still on the road in support of Make or Break Me, released just last fall. The record broke, then wasted no time landing on the No. 3 spot on the Texas Music Chart.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

Right about now, Park is basking in his single, the twangy, danceable “Leavin’ Stephenville, an up-tempo ode to coming back home, as it jumped from No. 11 to No. 7 on the Texas music chart. With some flitting fiddle, Park thumbs his nose at gas prices and yearns for home. This spring, Park sets out on a regional tour with country

rocker Cody Johnson, giving fans a chance to see them perform both full-band and acoustic sets in larger venues. Make or Break Me is the follow-up to Park’s 2008 album Anywhere in Texas. Details: Six Market Boulevard opens the show at 10 p.m. Rockin’ Rodeo is located at 1009 Ave C. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at http://bit.ly/J4hN16. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY Damsels in Distress (##1/2) Writerdirector Whit Stillman returns with his first film in 13 years (The Last Days of Disco) and he seems lost in time, with yet another tale of precocious young people who speak in superficial, pretentious voices. A group of four college women bonds while working at the campus suicide prevention center and while experiencing various love affairs. Fans of Stillman’s cloistered world should be pleased. Rated PG-13, 99 minutes. At the Angelika Plano. — Boo Allen The Salt of Life (###) In this consistently engaging Italian film, a middle-aged man (Gianni Di Gregorio) finds himself at loose ends once he no longer goes to work every day. The Cabin in the Woods (###) Five friends follow a horror film formula by gathering for a weekend at a cabin in the woods. Carnage is expected, and is delivered, but not before co-writers Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, who also directs, turn the tables with several unexpected twists. With Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins. Rated R, 95 minutes. — B.A. Lockout (##1/2) The MS One is a hulking, orbiting jail that puts its prisoners in “stasis,” or a deep sleep. But when the president’s daughter (Maggie Grace) visits to question its methods, a prisoner easily gets loose and soon the ship is overrun by criminals. Obviously, such awkward circumstances can only be resolved by a solo, heroic mission from a reluctant, irascible protagonist. The cheap visual effects are so bad that you’ll be wondering if you misplaced your 3-D glasses. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes. — The Associated Press

Rachel Weisz stars as Hester Collyer in The Deep Blue Sea.

Tossing and turning By Boo Allen Film Critic

Let The Deep Blue Sea be exhibit A against the argument for returning to the good ol’ days of the 1950s. With little ornament, yet much soulful agonizing, the intense new drama reveals many of the shortcomings but few of the pleasures of that era. The film is based on Terence Rattigan’s play of the same name. It has been previously made into several other teleplays in Britain, as well as in Germany and Spain. Vivien Leigh starred in a 1955 movie based on the play, taking first the role now portrayed by Rachel Weisz. Weisz plays an unlikely heroine for that period, a married woman who leaves her stable yet boring older husband for a handsome and exciting, but unstable, younger man. Playwright

‘Deep Blue Sea’ dives deep into ’50s-era tumult Rattigan, with screenplay here from writer-director Terence Davies, acutely captured that social stigma women suffered for behavior that would have been blithely ignored in a man. Seen today, such hypocrisy seems incomprehensible. Davies jumps around when rendering his narrative, choosing to begin with a failed suicide attempt by Hester (Weisz). Obviously, things have not turned out how she expected, or wanted. We learn in flashback that she left her staid magistrate husband, Sir William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale), for frivolous Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston). Sea takes place almost entirely in drawing-room flats and narrow passageways, as director Davies seems to

emphasize rather than avoid the obvious stage roots. The one time he opens things up, his action proves visually remarkable. In a scene set during World War II, Davies pans along the length of a London subway station to offer a capsule look at a city under siege. But by keeping his scenes mostly limited to oral exchanges, Davies emphasizes Rattigan’s piercing dialogue, as it becomes clear how Freddie has successfully charmed Hester before growing weary of her and discarding her. Her shame equals her pain, as she has grown to love the bounder, an unrepentant sod who cares little that he has ruined a respectable life. For his part, the noble suffering husband initially grows angry. But over the 10 months

The Deep Blue Sea Rated R, 98 minutes. Opens Friday at the Magnolia.

Hester lives with Freddie in 1950s ignominy, Sir William remains perplexed in the extreme, asking, “How can you throw away so much for so little?” It’s a question Hester cannot answer. She continues to believe that her obsessive, now unrequited, love can keep her from becoming what she has already become: an outcast. Rilke winner connects dots between lives lived, lost By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

POETRY READING

P

oet Laura Kasischke knows what its like to stuff down that hysterical giggle that bubbles up when it’s just not welcome — at a funeral, after a car crash or in the middle of an intensive care unit when the machines start squealing. The whole of Kasischke’s collection of recent poetry, Space, in Chains, is the poet recording those kinds of moments — all of them as inevitable and natural as the finicky atoms in our bodies. Kasischke is in Denton today for a reading and of her award-winning collected poems on the University of North Texas campus. The Michigan poet is the winner of the inaugural UNT Rilke Prize, a $10,000 award given to a mid-career poet who has published an important work in the preceding year. The UNT Creative Writing Program, which established and awards the prize, was in good company in recognizing the collection. Kasischke was also recently recognized by the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry for the book. Space, in Chains was also named a New York Times Notable Book for 2011. Space, in Chains is a collection in three volumes. Kasischke’s poems explore a place of mystery between the known and the unknown. In poems like “My son makes a gesture my mother used to make” and “Your Headache,” the writer explores both the wonder and the horror of life’s unrelenting march. In the former, the narrator is in awe of the likeness of her mother in

ABOUT THE PRIZE UNT Creative Writing faculty named the prize for the early 20th century German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who is best known for his Duino Elegies, written from 1912 to 1922. The prize will be awarded each year, with the winner presenting a reading from his or her honored poetry collection to end the Visiting Writers Series for the spring semester. The winner will also make at least one public appearance in the Dallas-Fort Worth area outside of Denton. Kasischke will also read from Space, in Chains at 7:30 p.m. at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Cultures. The award will recognize an established, mid-career poet.

when people were allowed to admire how cool one could look while smoking. “Pleasure Center” tries to study the spot in the brain that seems so small but takes up so much space in our lives. A professor of English at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Kasischke has also received the Alice Fay di Castagnola Award from the Poetry Society of America, the Juniper Prize for Poetry from the University of Massachusetts Press, several Pushcart Prizes and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition to her poetry collections, Kasischke has written eight novels, including The Life Before Her Eyes, which became the basis for a 2007 film of the same name; and Be Mine, which became a national bestseller in France with the title A moi pour toujours. Kasischke is a graduate of Columbia University and the University of Michigan. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.
