Tony-winning ‘Drowsy Chaperone’ honors golden age of musicals

M
usic Theatre of Denton has taken a gamble with a musical that is much-loved, but only among those who keep up with new Broadway musicals. And The Drowsy Chaperone is new for casual consumers of theater. The Tony Award-winning musical was first performed in 1999 at a stag party held the night before the wedding of actors Bob Martin and Janet Van De Graaff (for whom the leading characters were named). The show was expanded and eventually piqued the interest of New York City producers, resulting in the musical’s 2006 debut. “It’s a really charming show,” said veteran director Bill Kirkley. The Drowsy Chaperone is a parody of old-time musicals. We meet the narrator, noted simply in the script as “The Man in the Chair,” and he takes the audience on the tour back in time with the help of his favorite musical theater albums. The show — which blends elements of farce and broad comedy —come to life as he listens. It’s standard fare: Boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back. Kirkley said he was proud to unite longstanding technical talent from Denton to create a big show. Gail Crump has designed a huge set that moves, Vicky Kirkley designed the lighting, and Janice LaPointe-Crump mapped out the complex dance and stage movements. “These are some the best people you can have on a directorial team, I think,” Kirkley said. The choreography is a particular standout. LaPointe-Crump, a retired Texas Woman’s University dance professor, did a lot of research before she choreographed the exuberant musical. Her choreography is hardworking — it propels the plot, develops character and signifies historical dance and cinema conventions. “I watched three Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire movies, and I watched Road to Rio, which is referenced in the script, and some MGM musicals. To track the discontinuity, I had notebooks full of material,” she said. By discontinuity, LaPointe-Crump refers to the musical’s contemporary score, and the songs that don’t refer to a common year. It’s a 21st-century story that honors a golden age of musical theater.

PLOT SYNOPSIS The Man in the Chair greets the audience on a lonely night in New York. To soothe his nerves, he invites the audience to listen to a recording of one of his favorite musicals: The Drowsy Chaperone. A young man and actor, Robert Martin, is preparing for his wedding to stage and film starlet Janet Van De Graaff. The marriage marks the ingenue’s early retirement from show business. Her producer, Mr. Feldzig, has to stop the wedding, or else a heavyweight financier will back out of Feldzig’s latest show, not to mention rough up Feldzig himself via a pair of gangsters. He convinces Aldopho, an immoral, oversexed European, to seduce Janet. But Aldopho mistakenly seduces the Chaperone hired to keep the starlet on track. Even so, Janet and Robert have a falling out and call the wedding off. Audiences get their happy ending, but not without much ado.
the musical numbers,” she said. “This is a show where everyone needs to move. Not everyone in the show is a dancer, though. I stylized movements to go along with some of the really stereotypical material. I also stayed true to some of those things — Jaime [Rodriguez, who plays Aldopho] has some true paso doble moves.”
The show includes some faces familiar to Denton audiences: Kenny Fudge is the Man in the Chair, Tyler Donahue is Robert Martin, Mike Strecher is Mr. Feldzig, and Olivia Norine is the Chaperone. There are new faces as well: Courtney Sikora is Janet Van De Graaff. Brothers Connor and Trent Bynum are the gangsters.

Frye set out to make a record that had an edge to it. She wanted to make a pop record that was rock around the edges, if you will. The recording is an autobiographical account of this homeschool girl-turned-musician, and the work she had to do to earn rock ’n’ roll cred. If “Prepared,” the real standout of a solid recording, is any indication, Frye earns that credibility honestly. Love me, love my Facebook page Arthur Fields opens his Master of Fine Arts photography show Monday at Texas Woman’s University’s East Gallery. Fields’ show, “Technically Connected,” includes a series of portraits. In each portrait, the subject’s face is obscured by a cellphone, which shows a photograph of another person. The exhibit uses large-scale digital photographs, portraits and videos to examine how social networking programs affect the identity and behavior of people who use social media as a main source of communication with family and friends. The weeklong show concludes with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 13. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 4 p.m.

he Super Pit had Pearl Jam, and the Murchison’s Winspear Hall has box seating. But it’s the much smaller and lesser-known Main Auditorium that will claim Wilco’s first Denton stop on Saturday at the University of North Texas. Fellow Chicagoans Smith Westerns will help initiate the space as a rock venue, if only for one night. Not since Pearl Jam played UNT’s Super Pit in 1993 has such an anticipated pop show happened on campus. OPENING FRIDAY The Beaver (###) Jodie Foster directs and co-stars in this provocative, daring film that will leave filmgoers scratching their heads. A successful businessman and caring family man (Mel Gibson) succumbs to depression, and the only thing that can bring him out is a stuffed beaver hand puppet he communicates through. Kyle Killen’s script keeps us off-guard and in the dark as to where all of this is headed. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — Boo Allen. Carancho (###) Uneven but compelling thriller from Argentina about a sleazy lawyer (Ricardo Darin) who meets a struggling doctor (Martina Gusman) as their paths cross in the seediest parts of Buenos Aires. They strike up a romance that leads into a scheming final act. While the performances are strong, director Pablo Trapero frames the story as a gritty contemporary noir that captures the socioeconomic disparities of its setting and takes aim at the ethical disregard of its characters. Not rated,
107 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Dumbstruck (##1/2) Cheerful documentary follows five ventriloquists who either work professionally or aspire to work professionally, from a $100 million Las Vegas headliner to an introverted teenager with dreams of reaching the big time. Naturally, it’s an eccentric group that generally doesn’t receive much support from family and friends. But by keeping its focus on the stage and the craft, the film doesn’t provide enough depth into its subjects’ lives to justify its feature length. Rated PG, 84 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — T.J. Jumping the Broom When a successful corporate lawyer (Paula Patton) accepts her boyfriend’s (Laz Alonso) proposal after a whirlwind courtship, she must defend their pairing both to her parents (Angela Bassett and Brian Stokes Mitchell) and his mother (Loretta Devine). Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. Last Night (##) Predictable romantic melodrama about a Manhattan couple (Sam Worthington and Keira Knightley) whose relationship is threatened when he goes out of town on a business trip with a flirty colleague (Eva Mendes) just as his wife meets a man (Guillaume Canet) from her past. This romantic roulette is more about emotional desires than sexual ones, which makes for a tame and tedious examination of relationships and temptations that keeps viewers at a distance. Rated R, 93 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Something Borrowed The lifelong friendship of two women (Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson) is threatened when one drunkenly sleeps with the other’s fiance. With John

Effort Thor-ted Branagh no action director, as new film well proves By Boo Allen Film Critic
T
he summer silly-season begins with Thor, a puffed-up, turned-up cartoon splashed across 3-D screens. It also marks the first film of the season based on a comic book, origins that become quickly apparent on screen. The one-time Marvel comic now arrives with a reported $150 million price tag, backed by a director, Kenneth Branagh, more known for his Shakespearean adaptations than for his pulp acumen. When Branagh focuses on Thor in the human realm, it is no worse, or sillier, than its many comic counterparts. But when it ventures into murky other-worlds, it looks surprisingly bargain basement. Thor splits its time almost equally between its heavenly origins and its earthly wander-

ings. In the former environs, Bo Welch’s production designs look plucked from 1930’s Flash Gordon serials. And the celestial special effects, credited to several people, look as though they would have been outdated a decade ago. But it’s hard to blame Branagh for such pedestrian visuals since such elements usually fall out of the director’s realm. Thor begins in vaguely spectral Asgard, where everyone speaks in stiff, unnatural dialogue. There, the head cheese, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), warns his sons Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) not to face off against a tribe of warriors who look like Jack Frost on steroids. They do fight, of course, but in a choppy, confused battle that shows Branagh’s limitations as
an action director. Later, having defied Pop, Thor finds himself exiled and thrown into the New Mexico desert where he is found by a trio of scientists (Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard and Kat Dennings). From there, Thor proudly adopts his fish-out-of-water mantle — saying weird things, not knowing where he is and generally providing material for everyone to comment on. Thor hangs around long enough to retrieve the magic hammer, which gives him extraordinary powers that come in handy when his villainous brother arrives for a showdown in the middle of a small town. Once again, in frivolous films such as these, actors are interchangeable. The ubiquitous Natalie Portman successfully looks shocked when the script calls for it. Australian Hemsworth has obviously been spending much more time at the gym than in perfecting his diction in the title role. In his defense, in a cartoon like Thor, pecs and abs mean more anyway.

Wilco
Wilco’s most recent stop in the area, in 2009 behind the album Wilco at the Palladium Ballroom in Dallas, met capacity crowds and spirited reviews, with Quick’s Hunter Hauk among the taken. “There’s no question that Wilco’s one of the most skilled rock (or, if you insist, alt-country) bands you can see live,” he wrote after the band’s 135minute set. This tour marks Wilco’s first live rounds since forming dBpm Records, the new label Jeff Tweedy and his bandmates founded early this year. Pitchfork reported April 21, a 7inch single with the new track “I Might” and a cover of Nick Lowe’s “I Love My Label” will serve as the first release on the imprint in June. When Wilco announced the beginning of its 2011 spring tour via the band’s website, news came that the band would make its first ever stop in Denton. But the venue announced was equally intriguing: the Main Auditorium, used mostly for speaking engagements like the recent Toms Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie’s appearance, Glee Club concerts and organ recitals. The Main Auditorium houses two rare organs: the 1949

Krasinski and Colin Egglesfield. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. The Strange Case of Angelica (###) Portuguese marvel Manoel de Oliveira, at 102 years of age, directs this strange film with magical-realism elements. In 1950s Portugal, a photographer (Felipe Vargas) is asked to capture recently deceased young Angelica (Pilar Lopez de Ayala) as she lies in her coffin. After, his life slowly unravels as he acts erratically, having dreams and visions, and even visits, from her. Beguiling film slowly reveals its hidden charms. Not rated, 97 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. There Be Dragons An investigative journalist goes to Spain to research a book about the controversial Catholic organization Opus Dei, but he hits a wall when his most promising source, his own father, proves uncooperative. was instated to kick-start what would become the university’s world-renowned jazz program. Jordan Stephens, a web developer and UNT alumnus, said he was surprised to hear the Auditorium would play host to Wilco instead of a Dallas venue. He’d only visited the space for a lecture by Bill Nye in 2009. But the different space and higher-than-usual ticket prices — the $35-perticket seats sold out in minutes — didn’t keep him from buying in. “Hey. It’s Wilco,” Stephens said. “The only other time I’ve seen them was at Austin City Limits a few years ago, and I thought it would be cool to see them in a smaller space,
indoors. I mean where else would a show that big be? I can’t think of any other place in the area that could accommodate something like that.” Robin Phillips was one such student who took notice of the room as she passed it on her way to English class. Phillips, the booking agent responsible for Modest Mouse’s milestone appearance at Rubber Gloves a decade ago, is now a senior talent buyer with AEG Live. She thought of the Auditorium when Wilco steered plans for a North Texas stop away from Dallas. “I just remember it from having English classes there,” Phillips said. For Smith Westerns front-
man Cullen Omori, opportunities for new exposure outweigh the risks of playing a nontraditional venue. “Unless [you’re] playing in a church or somewhere with amazing acoustics, nontraditional spaces seem to not always offer the best sound but can be really fun,” Omori wrote via e-mail from the road. “When we played Primavera Festival in Barcelona last year we had to play a second show that was in a public park. I don’t think it sounded very good but it was weird because it was half people who knew us and the festival, and the other half was just park-going people.” Musicians from Wilco weren’t available for interviews before the sold-out show. Though ticketed events on college campuses can draw the same group of fans an oft-used venue would, rock and pop shows at places where different genres of performance usually happen can command a special kind of reverence. For instance, Phillips was also behind experimental indie rock artist Sufjan Stevens’ appearance at Southern Methodist University’s McFarlin Auditorium last year, a venue known mostly for hosting world-class dance groups. “I kind of like that, those unexpected little jewels,” Phillips said.
into a story about a kidnapped grandmother and a high-tech detective agency run by talking animals. Kids might enjoy the fast pace and wisecracking characters, but it lacks freshness and the 3-D effects are a sham. The voice cast includes Glenn Close and Hayden Panettiere. Rated PG, 85 minutes. — T.J. Hop (##) Frenetic blend of live action and animation won’t exactly start a new Easter movie trend. It follows E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand), a rabbit who is next in line to become the Easter Bunny but would rather become a drummer in Hollywood, where he disrupts the life of an unemployed slacker (James Marsden). There are some amusing sight gags and one-liners, but the script is wildly uneven and lacks comic momentum. The buddy-comedy sequences feel like a Garfield knockoff. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — T.J. Insidious (##1/2) Low-budget haunted-house movie from director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell (Saw) centers on a couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) that moves into a suburban house, where their young son suddenly lapses into a coma, raising the ques-
tion of whether his body is being inhabited by paranormal beings. The film shows a lot of promise in the first half, generating some effective chills, before revealing an uninspired twist that leads to a predictable conclusion. Rated R, 102 minutes. — T.J. Madea’s Big Happy Family When Shirley (Loretta Devine), Madea’s niece, receives distressing news about her health, the only thing she wants is her family gathered around her — but her three adult children are too preoccupied with their own troubles to pay attention to her. Enter Madea (Tyler Perry), who must bring the clan together and help Shirley deal with her crisis. Rated PG-13, 106 minutes. Prom (##) As predictable as the titular event itself, this innocuous ensemble teen flick follows more than a dozen characters at a suburban high school as they endure minor social crises while preparing for prom, including the overachiever (Aimee Teegarden) who heads the planning committee and the outcast (Thomas McDonell) who reluctantly helps at the last minute. The cast of fresh faces is mostly engaging, but the script feels like little more than a
compilation of Facebook status updates. Rated PG, 103 minutes. — T.J. Rio (##1/2) The latest 3-D animated comedy from director Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age 2) is an energetic if formulaic talking-animal saga about a rare bird (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) from small-town Minnesota who ventures to Brazil with his owner (Anne Hathaway) to ensure the survival of his species. Along the way, creatures both good and evil cross their path. There are plenty of colorful characters to entertain the kids, even if it feels like we’ve seen most of this song-anddance before. Rated G, 96 minutes. — T.J. Water for Elephants (##) This big-screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Sara Gruen will have little difficulty finding a fan base. The Depression-era love triangle focuses on a circus performer (Reese Witherspoon) who falls for a young veterinary student (Robert Pattinson) against the wishes of her circusowner husband (Christoph Waltz). But the romantic chemistry is lukewarm, and the sentimental script bogs down in tearjerker cliches. Rated PG-13, 120 minutes. — T.J.

Moller III/55 organ, originally built in 1924, and the 1985 Bedient IV/41 French Classical organ. The room seats 1,500, which is a shade more than, say, Dallas’ historic Granada Theatre, which can fit 1,100 standing. Besides students who wander inside to use the snack vending machines (Hickory Hall next door has none) or duck out of a fiction workshop during an organ recital, few regulars of the Auditorium Building — which was built in 1924, UNT spokesman Buddy Price said — can hear music from the room. David Pierce, office manager for the College of Music, said the Main Auditorium isn’t part of the departmental tour. He added that the room is known as the stomping grounds of Floyd “Fesser” Graham’s dance band in the early 1940s, just before a degree program in dance band
NOW PLAYING Fast Five (###) If the filmmakers had thrown in giant, shape-shifting robots, talking apes and some vampires, the fifth installment in The Fast and the Furious franchise would hardly have been more outlandish. That said, the movie will get you where you’re going. With Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster and Paul Walker. Rated PG13, 130 minutes. — The Associated Press Hanna (###) A girl (Saoirse Ronan) is trained in survival skills by her father (Eric Bana) in a remote wilderness area of Finland where they live. Flushed out by CIA agents, including Cate Blanchett, the two escape, setting off wild action scenes complemented by director Joe Wright’s knack for the strange. Entertaining, even if constantly threatening to fall over the edge. Rated PG-13, 111 minutes. — B.A. Hoodwinked Too: Hood vs. Evil (#1/2) Ill-conceived and cheaply made sequel to the surprise 2005 animated hit that puts a zany spin on classic fairy tales, in this case wrapping Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel
