Point your vehicle to the northeast, then, because Pilot Point hosts its one-day acoustic music extravaganza on Sunday. The third annual North Texas Songwriters Festival on the downtown Pilot Point square promises 37 singer-songwriters, food and classic cars. All it costs is your Sunday afternoon and evening. “The reasons to do it [host the festival] are twofold,” said organizer Ryan Hawkins. “One, we want to give the artists an avenue to show off their talents and also to meet one another. We also do this to support the Pilot Point Community Opera House, which is an 1890s opera house. older, and $10 for children and students. DEADLINE: We want to restore it to its original grandeur.” Hawkins said the classic car show is a new addition to the festival. Car and truck enthusiasts will compete for trophies in a number of categories. “The car show was an idea from the Pilot Point Main Street Association, something to make the festival bigger and better,” Hawkins said. The National Weather Service is predicting a beautiful Sunday, but attendees needn’t worry about fickle North Texas

skies, Hawkins said. The opera house was once converted into a car dealership, and the audience will be indoors. Six bay doors will be used as the stages. The artists, who come from Texas and elsewhere, will perform two or three songs apiece. “I’d say the music is Texas music,” Hawkins said. “There’s a country feel to it. We have performers who are pure folk music and some are straightup rock, but for the most part this is going to be Texas music.”

enton’s independent music-makers can get some free advice today. Sarah Saturday, the founder of the Earn It Yourself movement and website, will host a free, all-ages meeting and panel discussion at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. Saturday comes to Denton as a part of the Vans Warped Tour, as the rock circuit looks for indie talent for an upcoming tour. Saturday first cultivated Earn It Yourself meet-ups during last year’s Warped Tour, building a platform that gave fans and bands unprecedented access to the music industry, along with networking opportunities with some of the biggest names in music. Saturday will bring music makers together to talk about the Denton music scene, and to promote viable, independent commercial music driven by bands and local creative minds. The meeting and panel starts at 6 p.m. After locals get a taste of the movement, the Earn It Yourself (Spring Into Action) Tour will present a show by local bands the Background, the Wee-Beasties and Bad Design. The tour will select a local band from each meet-up showcase to join the Warped Tour when it visits the city closest to them.

Regional group takes on jazz, pop

P

aris Rutherford’s new vocal jazz ensemble performs this weekend in Lewisville. The New Collection, a 30voice vocal jazz group, performs a cappella treatments of music by Rodgers and Hart, big band writer Maria Schneider, Miles Davis and a few classics from the Beatles, Simon and

Garfunkel, and more. Rutherford is a professor emeritus of vocal jazz at the University of North Texas. Rutherford started the group in the fall of 2009 to give singers throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area a chance to sing jazz harmonies in a group. The chorus includes professional singers, educators, businessmen

and women and students. The concert is slated for 4 p.m. Sunday at the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation, 602 N. Old Orchard Road in Richardson. Admission is free, and donations will benefit the music ministry of the host church. For more information, visit www.thenewcollection.com.

T

he members of the Von Ehrics call their musical style “cowboy punk.” Each of the 12 tracks on the band’s latest album, Two Foot Stomp, marries the Southern twang of Texas music, gospel and country to the wild, thrashing rhythms usually at home in punk rock. “We’ve been doing this for 11 or 12 years now,” said Robert Jason Vandygriff, the team captain of the band. “We wanted to make a deeper record.

The Von Ehrics are all over the map, and not just musically: Drummer Gabe Aguilar is from Denton, guitarist Clayton Mills lives in Krum, frontman Jason Vandygriff is down in Houston, and bassist Paul “Santi” Vaden comes from Richardson.

“The records we made before this were pretty much about whiskey, women and the road. I think we wanted to go deeper.” The band is a Texas outfit, and like its home state, the Von Ehrics (named after the Texas professional wrestling family) embody a broad mix of influences and cultural flavors. Frontman Vandygriff lives in Houston, guitarist Clayton Mills lives in Krum, drummer Gabe Aguilar lives in Denton and bassist Paul “Santi” Vaden lives in Richardson. Vandygriff sings with a drawl, but he also pleads for “some old Black Flag or some ZZ Top” and “something that starts in the key of E/but don’t always end up in B” in the foot-stomping anthem “Rock & Roll.” Vandygriff can list George Strait songs while he’s blind drunk, but the soundtrack of his adolescence is still marrow-deep. “The punk part of this comes from those times when you’re 12 or 13 and you’re discovering music for yourself. You’re not just listening to what’s playing,” Vandygriff said. Teens coming of age in the 1980s were jarred out of the wholesomeness of George Strait and pop’s Deborah Gibson by the likes of the Violent Femmes, or the Sex Pistols and the Clash albums hidden in their parents’ record collection. Many a young man is still propelled through puberty by the Ramones today. The Von Ehrics wrap up the abandon and rebellion of punk in an authentic rock that is a little Red Dirt, a little gospel and enough honky-tonk to keep a room full of Stetsons bobbing. And there’s meat to the album, too. Two Foot Stomp is still stained with whiskey and ready to rumble with Lone Star women, but the songs have something to say. The record opens with “Last of the Working Slobs,” a hat tip to the men who worked up a sweat on the job, stayed married and went on to their great reward without the 21st-century sense of entitlement perched like a chip on a shoulder. “Smokewagon” speeds things up, a bucking number that recalls the trials of touring the country in an

OPENING FRIDAY Bridesmaids (###) Broad but amusing Judd Apatow comedy from director Paul Feig (Unaccompanied Minors) about an impending wedding in which a neurotic maid of honor (Kristen Wiig) threatens her friendship with the bride (Maya Rudolph) because she can’t get along with her fellow bridesmaids. It’s too obnoxious and overlong at times, yet Wiig provides some big laughs in a breakthrough performance that headlines an appealing ensemble cast. Rated R, 125 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Cave of Forgotten Dreams (###) Master filmmaker Werner Herzog received rare permission from the French government and then took limited filming equipment into the Chauvet caves in southern France. There, he captured the delicate images left on the walls 30,000 years ago. With such limited access, Herzog cannot avoid repetition, but he maintains interest with various interviews and his always-engaging narration. Not rated, 90 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Hesher (#1/2) For its name cast only does this strident, annoying film earn points. A violent, unhinged, seemingly homeless man, Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), moves uninvited into the home of a man (Rainn Wilson) paralyzed with grief over the loss of his wife. The young son (Devin Brochu), who’s grieving too, suffers most of Hesher’s nonsensical abuse. Natalie Portman plays a store clerk who somehow becomes involved. Pointless, loud and violent, with little to say about dealing with loss. Rated R, 100 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. Meek’s Cutoff (####) The latest minimalist effort from director Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy) is a Western about a wagon train in 1845 trying to navigate the Oregon Trail that becomes lost despite hiring a guide (Bruce Greenwood), causing strife that coincides with the arrival of an American Indian intruder. The rich period detail and desert cinematography supplement a character study that rewards patient viewers. Cast includes Michelle Williams and Paul Dano. Rated PG, 102 minutes. Will Ferrell is uncharacteristically subdued in Everything Must Go, a film about an alcoholic in relapse who decides to rid himself of his worldly possessions. Roadside Attractions

Not just another Will Ferrell movie Film proves it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for

surprised to find out how well he pulls it off. Ferrell brings compassion and depth to the role of Nick, a marketing executive whose boozing leads to the loss of his job and his wife, who throws all of his possessions on the front lawn of their suburban house and changes the locks. His car also is repossessed and his phone service is cut off.

This causes Nick to take up residence on the front lawn under the guise of a yard sale, where he finds sympathy from a neighborhood teenager (Christopher Wallace, the son of the late rapper Notorious B.I.G.) and an artist (Rebecca Hall) who moves in across the street. More importantly, he’s forced to reconsider his life and his addictions. It’s a story of redemption, of a man driven to extreme measures by his demons and his checkered past, and someone who finds consolation from unlikely sources. Everything Must Go was adapted from a short story by Raymond Carver by rookie writer-director Dan Rush,

whose approach to the material has touches of bleakness and optimism. The film works best as a character study, although Rush’s script too often turns contrived and melodramatic, such as when Nick clumsily attempts to reunite with an old high school flame (Laura Dern). Yet the film is given a boost by Ferrell, who has proven his versatility previously in Stranger Than Fiction and knows how to make an audience laugh at the right moments. While this modest effort won’t get the same level of mainstream attention as Ferrell’s many commercial successes, it’s more rewarding than most of them.

Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Questions of constitutionality add to the human drama, while excellent overall production values aid the narrative. Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. — B.A. Insidious (##1/2) Low-budget haunted-house movie from director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell (Saw) centers on a couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) that moves into a suburban house, where their young son suddenly lapses into a coma, raising the question of whether his body is being inhabited by paranormal beings. The film

shows a lot of promise in the first half, generating some effective chills, before revealing an uninspired twist that leads to a predictable conclusion. Rated R, 102 minutes. — T.J. Prom (##) As predictable as the titular event itself, this innocuous ensemble teen flick follows more than a dozen characters at a suburban high school as they endure minor social crises while preparing for prom, including the overachiever (Aimee Teegarden) who heads the planning committee and the outcast (Thomas McDonell) who reluctantly helps at the last minute. The cast of fresh

faces is mostly engaging, but the script feels like little more than a compilation of Facebook status updates. Rated PG, 103 minutes. — T.J. Thor (##1/2) In this Marvel comic adaptation, Anthony Hopkins plays Odin, leader of other-worldly Asgard. He exiles his son Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to Earth, where he becomes the requisite fish out of water. A team of scientists (Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard, Kat Dennings) helps him return to his homeland. Big, brassy and loud rendering by director Kenneth Branagh. Rated PG13, 114 minutes. — B.A.

Everything Must Go

By Todd Jorgenson Film Critic

It’s true that Everything Must Go is the latest movie starring Will Ferrell, but it’s not necessarily the latest Will Ferrell movie. Those expecting the highpitched slapstick antics of Talladega Nights or Step Brothers might be surprised to find a quieter, gentler Ferrell in a mostly dramatic role in this low-budget independent story of a middle-aged man forced to start his life over.
