The kids of Ballet Folklorico de Lee Elementary wave and throw candy from their float in the Denton Cinco de Mayo parade last year. This year’s parade starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and will travel around the Square.

De colores enton’s 29th annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration rolls out at 10 a.m. Saturday at Quakertown Park, 321 E. McKinney St. The event is a free family festival with lots of authentic Mexican food, music, dance, art and vendors. The annual event commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The regional holiday is celebrated in the city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla. In Denton, Cinco de Mayo is the city’s biggest Hispanic cultural event. After the annual parade through downtown, attendees can take in traditional Mexican folk dances, mariachi music, art and children’s activities and peruse jewelry, crafts and other merchandise for sale by vendors. Come hungry, because vendors

We're not Dallas, Fort Worth or Austin. We're

ubber Gloves’ closing has the city verklempt. There is but a sliver of silver in that unhappy cloud: Lift to Experience, the short-lived Denton band that is something of a legend, will play the venue’s final show on June 5. If Lift plays like they used to, earplugs are a must. (Former Denton Record-Chronicle music writer Jennifer Robertson Norris once penned this line: “If Rubber Gloves is the house that Lift to Experience built, then Little Grizzly surely sanctified it.” Should give you an idea of the LiftGloves symbiosis.) ■ The owner of the windswept pink wedding gown in Glenn Heights has been located, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5). Glenn Heights resident Barbara Haynes found the gown in the wreckage in her neighborhood after a devastating tornado in December. The box the dress was found in bore a Denton address. NBC5 reports Haynes finally found the owner, who lives just five blocks away in Glenn Heights, south of Dallas. The owner hasn’t been named, but NBC5 reports the owner and Haynes planned to meet up soon. ■ Texas Co-op Power Magazine mentions Cardo’s Farm Project in Denton in its May edition. The cover article, about a new generation of Texas farmers, mentions Cardo’s Amanda Austin and her farm, which now focuses on growing flowers and is transitioning to an incubator site for fledgling farmers. Read the article here: http://bit.ly/1WY6eOO. In the same issue, Gail Patterson of Big Fatty’s Spanking Shack won the Texas Co-op Power’s first-place prize for the May recipe contest. Patterson entered her recipe for red chile quinoa, kale and calabacita enchiladas. ■ Denton gaming enthusiast and expert Patrick Scott Patterson has inked a deal to act as a producer for Box Art: A Gaming Documentary. The documentary examines the back stories of video game packaging. Director Robert McCallum’s earlier documentary Nintendo Quest included Patterson on screen. Both men say they feel the shift toward digital media puts the future of box art in limbo. The project is being funded through Kickstarter: http://kck.st/1T91WBF. ■ Denton guitarist Link Chalon suffered a serious fall while trimming a tree around April 18. He suffered a broken pelvis, fractured nearly all of his ribs and had a punctured lung. The musician was hospitalized and had to miss his annual gig at the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival. Chalon’s

R

friends started a crowdfunding page to help pay for his medical expenses at www.gofundme.com/24fm6y6s. ■ City employees joined a small party watching election returns with council members Joey Hawkins and Greg Johnson on Saturday night at the Best Western Premier Crown Chase Inn & Suites. Somehow, in a room with a former mayor pro tem (Pete Kamp), two former mayors (Perry McNeill and Euline Brock) and the Chamber of Commerce president (Chuck Carpenter), the presence of Denton Municipal Electric spokesman Brian Daskam and his DME colleague Jim Maynard and a plainclothes Orlando Hinojosa (moviegoers know him as Denton police’s Hide-Lock-and-Take guy) just stuck out. We’re huge First Amendment fans. But we also like Dear Prudence, and suspect she would give city employees different advice on being seen and heard during election season. ■ You never know how many friends you have until you own a truck. Denton loaned one of its grapple trucks — a big-armed brush collector — to Whitesboro for a day after severe storms rolled through April 29. Whitesboro Mayor W.D. “Dee” Welch wrote Denton Mayor Chris Watts a friendly thank-you note, saying they cleaned up 36.2 tons of brush and debris with the loaner. ■ We somehow missed its installation, but we appreciate the addition of that proud pink flamingo sculpture on top of the building housing Hoochie’s, Hickory Street Lounge and Rusty Taco on East Hickory. ■ Well, shoot. An eagle-eyed reader let us know that in our mention about former Denton sculptor George Caddell last week, we incorrectly called him a Krum resident. In fact, the soft-spoken artist lived in Cross Roads before leaving our fair county for North Carolina. Birds are still nesting inside one of his bronze water bird sculptures in South Lakes Park. ■ Cameraman Ed Steele coined a new term for the surge in hip new business development in downtown Denton: Dentrification. Nice turn of phrase, Ed. ■ Dallas musician Salim Nourallah and Denton musician Paul Slavens (both members of the band the Travoltas) have been hosting an acoustic open mic at the Sundown at Granada on Dallas’ Greenville Avenue. Nourallah reports the Travoltas are mixing a new record. No release date yet. But the band will play July 15 at Lee Harvey’s in Dallas. ■ Mark Lettieri, a Dallas R&B guitarist and member of the Denton-born, two-time Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy, has a new album coming out on May 20. Spark and Echo is billed as a jazz-rock record. ■ It’s a weird pairing, but Bowling for Soup and Denton’s Doug Burr will play back-to-back sets May 29 at the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts during the free Arlington Stage Music Festival.

Which films will stand out for big-budget movie season? popcorn entertainment with emotional relevancy, Civil War set the bar quite high right out of the gate, similar to last year’s Mad Max: Fury Road. However, there are some bigbudget reboots loaded up (Ghostbusters, Pete’s Dragon), new entries (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, The Secret Life of Pets) and sequels aplenty (Star Trek Beyond,

Independence Day: Resurgence) to anticipate.

X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27) From this point on, it’s going to be difficult for any comic book adaptation to steal the throne from Civil War in 2016. However, Bryan Singer’s fourth go-round with the X-Men franchise (dating back before Marvel reigned supreme)

shows promise, especially after he and director Matthew Vaughn breathed new life into the series with First Class (2011) and Days of Future Past (2014). It also helps that Apocalypse will see the return of Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy, with a few new players, such as Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as the film’s villain.

OPENING FRIDAY Money Monster Jodie Foster takes her talents behind the camera again

for Money Monster, a high-stakes thriller in which a financial television host (George Clooney) and producer (Julia Roberts) are put in a threatening situation when a worked-up investor (Jack O’Connell) takes over their studio. At regional theaters. Rated R, 98 minutes. — Preston Barta The Darkness The latest Blumhouse horror film brings us yet another case of supernatural forces haunting a family (Kevin Bacon, Radha Mitchell and others). When a kid (David Mazouz) brings back a stone from the Grand Canyon, all hell breaks loose. Exorcisms, wolves and fleeting spirits — scares are sure to ensue with The Darkness. At regional theaters. Rated PG-13, 93 minutes. — P.B. High-Rise (★★1⁄2) Set in 1975,

High-Rise features a shocking breakdown of class and social structures within a state-of-the-art apartment tower. What starts out as a smooth practice takes a drastic turn for the worse when a system malfunction occurs, causing its inhabitants (Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans and Sienna Miller) to give into their animalistic impulses. After intrigue kicks out after an hour or so, the film’s stylish wheels spin, leaving the audience with little substance to chew on. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. Rated R, 119 minutes. — P.B. The Man Who Knew Infinity (★★★) Starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons, the film is a fairly standard biopic about a math wiz (Patel) who becomes a pioneer in mathematical

theories. However, the riveting performances and impressive intelligence elevate the material. At the Angelika Film Center in Dallas and Plano. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. P.B.

NOW PLAYING Barbershop: The Next Cut (★★1⁄2) If you’re wondering what the Barbershop crew (Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and Eve, among others) has been up to the last 12 years, well, they’re still cutting hair and providing the usual social commentary. This time it’s about the rising gun and gang violence on the South Side of Chicago. This third outing has a lot of strengths (the theme of fatherhood), but it’s drowned by its melodramatic

side plots (infidelity accusations) and over-the-head topics. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — P.B. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (★★) Overly ambitious and far too long, Batman v Superman misuses its classic characters, undercuts its battle scenes and disrespects the audience that’s been waiting to see this epic showdown for years. Director Zack Snyder’s followup to Man of Steel tries to accomplish too much by jumping for greatness instead of building toward it. With Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams. As Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot turns on the light in this dark and tedious movie. Rated PG-13, 153

Summer Its sequel, the aptly titled The Conjuring 2, reunites most of that film’s main talent on both sides of the camera — including director James Wan (Furious 7) and stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga — to take part in another maliciousspirit case. Hopefully Wan and Co. have some new tricks up their sleeve, otherwise this will be an easy cash grab for studios of no true value. Rated R, 120 minutes.

Finding Dory

(June 17) Superhero movies and their inevitable sequels may hit theaters like rapid fire, but Pixar has always taken its time, making sure a continued story is worthy of exploring. And while from the title alone Finding Dory might lead you to believe it’s more of the same, the film’s trailer says it has more on its mind than merely another lost fish story. You can expect Pixar’s mastery of the heartstrings here, as well as another fun-filled adventure that will be new and wondrous, yet harness the magic of the original, 2003’s Finding Nemo. Rated PG, 95 minutes.

Matt Damon reunites with filmmaker Paul Greengrass for “Jason Bourne,” due in theaters on July 29. even come close to drumming Civil War’s $180 million in their opening weekend. If you have to pick one, the underthe-radar flick you should pencil in your summer calendar is Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice. The film centers on the crushing world of improv comedy and it features a handful of comedic talents, including Keegan Michael-Key (Keanu) and Gillian Jacobs (Community).

This may not seem like ideal escapism to most, but sometimes the chances of being a little different, honest or weird can pay off. Such is the case with Don’t Think Twice, which cuts deep and serves as a wakeup call to those still in their 20s and 30s trying to find out what they’re doing with their lives. Not yet rated, 90 minutes.

Jason Bourne (July 29) Of all the reboots and sequels coming your way,

Jason Bourne (which I wish, for the sake of amusement, was called “Bourne Again” or “Bourne: Rebirth”) may be the blockbuster to truly knock your socks off and give you those well-deserved thrills. After the somewhat failed attempt to refocus the franchise on Jeremy Renner in The Bourne Legacy (2012), Matt Damon and filmmaker Paul Greengrass (who also helmed The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum)

return from the shadows to show us how it’s done. While Greengrass’ unrestrained handheld style may be too much for some, others can prepare to line up and take in what’s sure to be an action film of the purest form. Not yet rated, 119 minutes. MOVIES Continued from Page 10 minutes. — P.B. The Boss Melissa McCarthy stars as a high-profile businesswoman who is sent to prison for insider trading, then tries to rebuild her image. With Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage and Kathy Bates. Directed by Ben Falcone. Rated R, 99 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Captain America: Civil War (★★★★1⁄2) Set after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Winter Soldier, Civil War begins with Captain America (Chris Evans) leading the new team of Avengers — including the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) — around the globe to stop some of biggest known threats. But after an international incident, mounting political pressure leads to regulations that force superheroes to register with the government. While some players, such as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), are on board, others don’t see a reason to be policed, sparking the titular “civil war.” Civil War, in its sheer enormity, is every inch a blockbuster — but it’s no mindless spectacle. It will set both head and heart running, and that is the secret to its thrill. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. — P.B. The Huntsman: Winter’s War (★★1⁄2) Prequel-sequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman follows the journey of, well, the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), while two rival queen sisters (Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron) duke it out in full Frozen fashion. The movie is titled Winter’s War, but there is no real war in it. It also doesn’t have much of a plot, other than the Huntsman and company (Jessica Chastain, Nick Frost, Rob Brydon, Sheridan Smith and Alexandra Roach) trying to retrieve the missing “mirror, mirror, on the wall” before it falls into the wrong hands. Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — P.B. The Jungle Book (★★★★) Disney’s beautifully crafted live-action adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s works is worth seeing on the biggest screen possible. A young boy, Mowgli (played with warmth and gumption by newcomer Neel Sethi), embarks on a journey of self-discovery in the midst of the jungle, befriending and making enemies with inhabitants along the way. With the latest CGI, filmmaker Jon Favreau (Iron Man) is up to the task of making these adventurous creatures authentic-looking and larger than life. Although the film gets a bit dark at times (parents, be cautious for your younger ones), fans are not robbed of the 1967 animated film’s iconic songs such as “The Bare Necessities.” With voices by Bill Murray, Idris Elba and Christopher Walken. Rated PG, 105 minutes. — P.B.
