Softly, softly, Gomez catches muse
T
echnically, Robert Gomez isn’t a Denton musician anymore. He’s a Seattle artist who beats a path back to Denton to play with other performers or for an occasional gig. Gomez plays J&J’s Pizza on Friday night. He’s in the throes of a new project under the working title Severance Songs. The art song cycle underscores the poetry of Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Olen Butler.
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
Gomez — surely a man with a dark side and a darker sense of humor — has chosen prose poems from Butler’s collection of 62 entries. Those entries that Gomez will set to music are written as thoughts from the decapitated heads of mythical, fictional or historical figures. After Gomez released his
last album, Pine Sticks and Phosphorous, the guitarist and velvet-voiced singer seemed to be wandering in an eternal dusk. Severance Songs seems to set Gomez up for another stroll into the purple haze. Details: Friday’s show starts at 9 p.m. in the Old Dirty Basement at J&J’s, 118 W. Oak St. on the Square. OPENING FRIDAY
Earthling (##) Ambitious but muddled low-budget science-fiction saga, filmed in Dallas, is admirable more for effort than execution. It’s about a schoolteacher (Rebecca Spence) who awakens after an “atmospheric event” with strange feelings, and later discovers that she is not alone, and that her existence may be tied to that of aliens. Filmmaker Clay Liford puts some fresh twists into familiar genre concepts such as body-snatching, but the script leaves too many logical questions. Not rated, 113 minutes. At the Texas Theatre. — Todd Jorgenson The First Grader (###1/2) Powerful drama about an illiterate 80-year-old former freedom fighter (Oliver Litondo) in Kenya who tries to enroll in a primary school as a means of receiving a free education promised by the government after its independence. But his attendance sparks tribal bitterness that causes the man to flash back to his troubled past. Strong performances help to elevate the material, while director Justin Chadwick mostly sidesteps cliches and cheap sentimentality. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. At the Magnolia. — T.J. Skateland (##) This nostalgic, lowbudget look at small-town East Texas in the early 1980s captures the setting but doesn’t have much in the way of compelling drama. It follows several characters, most notably a teenager (Shiloh Fernandez) who manages the local skating rink that’s about to close down. Those who grew up in the era might recognize a John Hughes vibe in the storytelling, but these mischievous characters aren’t that appealing, and neither are their predictable crises. Rated PG-13, 98 minutes. — T.J. Twelve Thirty (##1/2) Uneven family drama about an unstable mother (Karen Young) who lives with her two daughters (Mamie Gummer and Portia Reiners) while her emotionally detached husband is away. Then a young man (Jonathan Groff) enters the picture, throwing more instability into an already dysfunctional house. Writer-director Jeff Lipsky (Flannel Pajamas) creates some distinct characters and family dynamics, even if his dialogue and situations too often feel forced. Not rated, 121 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J.

Johnny Depp once again takes on the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
‘Pirates’ limp on By Boo Allen Film Critic
Here’s a suggestion for anyone planning on seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the latest in the popular Disney franchise: Take notes. Later, after removing the 3D glasses and going home, you might need to refer to them to remind you of what you have just seen. Otherwise, you might not recall whether you have just witnessed the fourth film in the series, or the first, second or third. More likely, the empty film will leave you with no impression at all. This unimaginative Pirates offers little more than the previous efforts, and that in spite of the added elements of mermaids, magical ships, a few new characters and the loss of some old ones. Regardless, everything still looks and seems the same. Johnny Depp vamps it up again as Jack Sparrow, and Geoffrey Rush returns as

one-legged Barbossa. Keith Richards makes another brief appearance as Jack’s father, and look for Judi Dench in a quick, early cameo. The thin plot from writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio revolves around Sparrow again escaping punishment, a device highlighted by returning several times to the hoary device of Sparrow thinking he has escaped only to turn around and face a phalanx of weaponry. Eventually, he teams with an old love (Penelope Cruz) and

her supposed father, Blackbeard (Ian McShane), to track down the Fountain of Youth. The pursuit takes up much of the film, but it does hold the film’s singular highlight: the harrowing encounter with an army of mermaids. Rob Marshall’s direction adds little of his trademark energy (Chicago, Nine) to the succession of routine scenes. At this point, sword fights no longer hold excitement or provide opportunities for breathless action. They have become boring and commonplace, and this Pirates contains far too
many (Five? Six? Where are those notes?). John Myhre’s sets and production designs might have stood out among the colorless debris, that is, if Dariusz Wolski’s cinematography had been allowed to film them and not been kept in what looks like a choice to bathe the film in the perpetual darkness, in caves, below deck on ships and anywhere else light fails to fall. Hans Zimmer’s relentless music remains at full blast, blaring away, doing its best to disguise the painful fact that not much is going on.

udge Brewer said he knew of two regional hip-hop acts to call when the Fry Street Public House asked the young hip-hop artist to help round out a night that would end in a performance by Coolio. “They called us wanting us to help them book the rest of the show,” said Brewer, a founding member of Denton’s Fab Deuce. “I knew that I wanted to get some guys out here who could draw a crowd.”
Fab Deuce, which is anchored by Brewer and his brother, Blaine, Matt Ress-Giant and local DJ Yeahdef, a.k.a. Joey Liechty, packs shows in Denton. Pudge Brewer invited the Denton hip-hop duo XeGeSiS — Scott McBride and Ritchy Flo — and a Dallas MC, Playdough. For all the posturing inherent to hiphop, Denton’s emcees are approachable, ambitious young performers who know how to hustle an audience into a gig. Within moments of sending a flier for the show to Facebook friends,
Brewer saw 60 people RSVP to a gig that begins officially as a festival at the Public House tonight and ends with the Grammy-winning hip-hop maestro on Saturday. “When people hear Coolio, man, they think ‘Gangsta’s Paradise,’” McBride said during a midday interview at Fry Street’s Riprocks. “Yeah,” Brewer said. “On any Thursday night at the Public House, if you put ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ on, by the end of it, everyone is singing it. They know all the words.”
Brewer said Denton’s hardworking hip-hop scene will hitch its wagon to any star. Fab Deuce is working on a follow-up to its last record, Deuce Knuckle, a full-length that packs incisive lyrical heat propelled by tricky, trippy beats that can make the stiffest neck bob. When it comes to taking things live, Brewer said artists have to run with crews that can bring their best game and all their fans. Community is an artist’s best hope to book shows, move merchandise and afford recording.
“I’ve known them for years now,” Brewer said of McBride and Flo. “I know they can bring a lot of people to a gig and I know what they can do.” Brewer said Playdough sharpened his chops in Dallas and knows how to get an audience in party mode. McBride said his musical partnership with Flo started when they were in grade school. “Ritchy Flo beat me in the geography bee in fifth grade,” he said. “The first song we did on a four-track tape deck. Then in high school, we did a mix tape
with an exchange student from the Czech Republic.” XeGeSiS played talent shows and house shows as high school students. They’ve made a few trips to the Czech Republic to perform. They released Future Shock, followed last September by Aftershock. In 19 tracks, XeGeSiS messes around with R&B on a track about girl-stealing after a gig, peddles tight beats and throwdown vocals on “pandemic @ the disco.” See HIP-HOP on 10

At just age 23, McBride (a.k.a. Unrill) and Flo stack their album with smart literary references, infectious bass lines and tight, relay-race flow. They make wise use of vocalist Ben Cina, who brings some singing into the verses. On “Moby Dick,” the duo drawls “hey guuuuuuuuurl” with utmost confidence. If you like your rhymes tight and delivered with boyish machismo, Aftershock needs to be in your digital library. But it’s not just macho posing. On “Cradle to the Grave” the performers are keenly aware that they live in a culture that is monitored from every angle, and evaluated by arbitrary and overly judgmental critics. McBride supplies most of the lyrics. “I do the beats,” Flo said. “I jam on the keys. It’s trial and error for me. Everything I used was something I just came up with. You know you’ve got something you can use because of the beat. There’s just something there that you know it’s got go in a song.” As for Fab Deuce, the crew has gotten a little bigger. Yeahdef has also brought a new edge to the group’s live game. “I used to make beats. I used to rap,” said Liechty, one of the region’s busiest DJs. “About four years ago, the group of people I used to run with broke up because some people went out of town. I used to gig for any idiot who set a keg down. When I realized this is something I could maybe get paid for, that changed things.” Yeahdef runs “’80s Dance Night” at Hailey’s Club in Denton every Thursday, and frequently DJs in Dallas. He started spinning for Fab Deuce about a year ago. “Matt took me to see Vortexas when Matt was part of Vortexas. Joey was doing a set, and I invited him to do a set at Hailey’s for a show I was booking. From there, I just liked what he did. We slowly adopted him, I guess,” Brewer said. “We’ve always needed a DJ.” Liechty said hip-hop is always better live when a DJ is organizing the beats and moving the set list from song to

“Some people are just about ego. For some people, it’s all about posturing. Not these guys.” — Joey Liechty, a.k.a. Yeahdef song. “It’s always better to have a DJ on stage instead of some guy up there by himself asking the guy in the sound booth to cue up the next track,” he said. “And they’re just the coolest guys. With them [Fab Deuce], everybody’s down to have a good time. Some people are just about ego. For some people, it’s all about posturing. Not these guys.” A few years back, Fab Deuce
and XeGeSiS wouldn’t have played the same show. “They had a beef,” Liechty said. “I guess we were like archnemeses,” Flo said. “We went to one of their shows, and I walked up to them and tried to give them our album. That was obviously not the smartest thing to do,” McBride said. The crews buried the hatchet after a rager of a show, over drinks, and started a mutual admiration. “Now we dig doing shows with them and letting people know they’re for real,” Brewer said. “They’re one of the groups I call when I need to book a good show.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. African Cats (###1/2) Samuel L. Jackson narrates this Disney documentary about the title subjects, African lions and cheetahs. Rated G, 89 minutes. — Boo Allen Bridesmaids (###) Broad but amusing Judd Apatow comedy from director Paul Feig (Unaccompanied Minors) about an impending wedding in which a neurotic maid of honor (Kristen Wiig) threatens her friendship with the bride (Maya Rudolph) because she can’t get along with her fellow bridesmaids. It’s too obnoxious and overlong at times, yet Wiig provides some big laughs in a breakthrough performance that headlines an appealing ensemble cast. Rated R, 125 minutes. — T.J. The Conspirator (###) Robert Redford directed this fact-based story with modern relevance about Mary Cassatt (Robin Wright), who was tried for conspiracy after her son had been implicated in President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Questions of constitutionality add to the human drama, while excellent overall production values aid the narrative. Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. — B.A. Fast Five (###) The fifth installment in The Fast and the Furious franchise is a blowout of a movie with no restraints whatsoever. Dwayne Johnson stars as a relentless federal agent going toe-to-toe with Vin Diesel’s driving ace Dom Toretto, who’s again on the run along with his sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster), and cop-turned-outlaw Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker). Rated PG-13, 130 minutes. — The Associated Press Insidious (##1/2) Low-budget haunted-house movie from director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell (Saw) centers on a couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) that moves into a suburban house, where their young son suddenly lapses into a coma, raising the question of whether his body is being inhabited by paranormal beings. The film shows a lot of promise in the first half, generating some effective chills, before revealing an uninspired twist that leads to a predictable conclusion. Rated R, 102 minutes. — T.J. Jumping the Broom When a successful corporate lawyer (Paula Patton) accepts her boyfriend’s (Laz Alonso) proposal after a whirlwind courtship, she must defend their pairing both to her parents (Angela Bassett and Brian Stokes Mitchell) and his mother (Loretta Devine). Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. Madea’s Big Happy Family When Shirley (Loretta Devine), Madea’s niece, receives distressing news about her health, the only thing she wants is her family gathered around her — but her three adult children are too preoccupied with their own troubles to pay attention to her. Enter Madea (Tyler Perry), who must bring the clan together and help Shirley deal with her crisis. Rated PG-13, 106 minutes.
Priest In a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by wars between humans and vampires, a warrior priest goes on a quest to rescue his kidnapped niece. With Paul Bettany and Karl Urban. Rated PG-13, 88 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Prom (##) As predictable as the titular event itself, this innocuous ensemble teen flick follows more than a dozen characters at a suburban high school as they endure minor social crises while preparing for prom, including the overachiever (Aimee Teegarden) who heads the planning committee and the outcast (Thomas McDonell) who reluctantly helps at the last minute. The cast of fresh faces is mostly engaging, but the script feels like little more than a compilation of Facebook status updates. Rated PG, 103 minutes. — T.J. Rio (##1/2) The latest 3-D animated comedy from director Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age 2) is an energetic if formulaic talking-animal saga about a rare bird (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) from small-town Minnesota who ventures to Brazil with his owner (Anne Hathaway) to ensure the survival of his species. Along the way, creatures both good and evil cross their path. There are plenty of colorful characters to entertain the kids, even if it feels like we’ve seen most of this song-anddance before. Rated G, 96 minutes. — T.J. Something Borrowed The lifelong friendship of two women (Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson) is threatened when one drunkenly sleeps with the other’s fiance. With John Krasinski and Colin Egglesfield. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. Soul Surfer (##) What could have been an uplifting story about a girl’s determination turns into a heavyhanded Christian melodrama, telling the true-life story of surfer Bethany Hamilton (Annasophia Robb), whose dreams of turning professional are derailed when she loses an arm in a shark attack. Her faith is tested as she gets back into the water. Bethany makes a fine role model for kids, but the film is sappy and pedestrian. Also stars Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt and Carrie Underwood. Rated PG, 106 minutes. — T.J. Thor (##1/2) In this Marvel comic adaptation, Anthony Hopkins plays Odin, leader of other-worldly Asgard. He exiles his son Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to earth, where he becomes the requisite fish-out-ofwater. A team of scientists (Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard, Kat Dennings) help him him return to his homeland. Big, brassy, and loud rendering by director Kenneth Branagh. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — B.A. Water for Elephants (##) This big-screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Sara Gruen will have little difficulty finding a fan base. The Depression-era love triangle focuses on a circus performer (Reese Witherspoon) who falls for a young veterinary student (Robert Pattinson) against the wishes of her circusowner husband (Christoph Waltz). But the romantic chemistry is lukewarm, and the sentimental script bogs down in tearjerker cliches. Rated PG-13, 120 minutes. — T.J.
