The Masons take the spotlight (well, the softening North Texas sunshine) at Twilight Tunes this evening on the Elm Street side of the lawn at the downtown Courthouse on the Square. Audiences should expect a reliable rock set with a regional Texas twang (Temple’s act seems ripe for a sunset gig on the roof of LSA Burger Co.). The singer-songwriter will stoke the

Bush Presidential Center on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas. The project has a long name — the George W. Bush Presidential Library Augmented Reality Project — but it amounts to digital graffiti meant to challenge the official record of the Bush museum. A visitor brings in a smartphone or tablet with the Layar app, and points the app-enabled camera at one of 10 “hot spots” in the museum’s exhibits. Users can then see additional content on their device, alongside the information presented by the museum. Chenoweth lives in Philadelphia. Parting Shot “The big battleground for a [transgender person] is the bathroom. It’s all about where you go to the bathroom. That was a real eye-opener. Some places I can go into the women’s bathroom and have no problem. Other places, no way am I going in there! I just go on my instincts as to what will be safe. So far I have never been in a violent situation; I think that has to do with the way that I view it. Black film fest taking entries for 2017 5 Local event set to expand for third year By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor cbreeding@dentonrc.com

Denton Black Film Festival will accept submissions from filmmakers for the first time since its inception in 2015. Submission committee chairwoman Linda Eaddy said the festival’s leaders believe the 2017 festival is the moment to expand the event’s reach. “We talked about expanding and calling for submissions for this year’s festival,” Eaddy said. “Each year, we get together after the festival to talk about what worked and what we can change. There was interest in getting submissions for 2016, but we thought we needed a little more time before we made that step.” The Denton festival showcases films about the lives and experiences of black people, and it also showcases the work of black directors and producers. In its first two years, the festival presented a range of

HEARING PROBLEMS? If your child has failed their hearing screening at school or is having difficulty listening to or hearing the teacher, Denton Hearing Health Care can be your first point of contact to conduct a diagnostic hearing test and central auditory processing screening. For children with chronic middle ear problems, swimmers ear, or P.E. tubes, we can make colorful custom swim molds to prevent water from entering the ear canal. These are floatable and can be used when swimming or bathing and may also be used for sound protection as well. Dr. Judith Caudle and Dr. Chris Caudle have served the children in Denton County and the surrounding areas for over 25 years.

ust in time for summer, Denton hip-hop crew Ghetto[box] drops an unexpected album from Real Rad Records on Saturday. Hooptie Music is an uncomplicated record that leaves a trace of London grime on the local hip-hop. If you thought hiphop could exist without big, cocky bass drops, Hooptie is your exhibit A. (No fear, though. The crew brings a chest-vibrating bass beat into the room on “Sweatin’.”) Ghetto[box] brings rappers Brother B (Byron Shurn), Matt G (Matt Gibson) and Digo (Francisco Leal) together as a crew, with TLiT (Todd Little) as their DJ. The crew amasses some beefy know-how between them — Digo logged hours with early Fab Deuce, Brother B freestyled and experimented on the scene for years and Sol Kitchen member Matt G toured Scanadinavia with the L.I.G.H.T. Crew a decade ago. Hooptie comes off like an easy summer project. Which probably means the boys poured over every bar of music in the studio. Standout track “Dimepiece” betray the crew’s philosophy — simplicity and minimalism can claim their own kind of heft — not to mention a knack for a sweet hook. Sometimes, spitting slowly is a risky proposition, but “Dimepiece” savors it’s steady meter without apology. It’s the same approach Amanda Dawn Service employs to good effect on “Bombshell,” another Real Rad track that defies current conventions. “Just Can’t Quit” proves the

crew can do the rapid-fire rap and some sing-song phrases without sacrificing solid wordplay. The crew signs off with a banger — “Thoe Dem Thangs” delivers the chorus we’ve come to expect in explosive Top 40 rap anthems. Think of the way “Stand Up” by Ludacris builds to a one-two punch and you have an idea of the radio-readiness of the track. Gitmo Music has been the junkyard dog guarding Denton’s best-known hip-hop. OPENING FRIDAY The Angry Birds Movie (★★★) This animated movie based on the addictive app doesn’t quite achieve the relative superiority of The Lego Movie, but it's surprisingly fun and heartfelt at times. The concept is simple: How did the angry birds get so angry? The story is centered on Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), whose bad luck and short temper land him in group therapy for anger management alongside the manic Chuck (Josh Gad), the dimwitted Bomb (Danny McBride), and the bruiser Terence (Sean Penn). And they all try to work through their issues with free-spirit instructor Matilda (Maya Rudolph). Meanwhile, some pigs arrive by ship. It’s the directorial debut of veteran animator Clay Kaytis (Frozen, Tangled) and storyboard artist Fergal Reilly (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The Iron Giant), who are working off a script from The Simpsons alumnus Jon Vitti. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — The Associated Press Love & Friendship (★★★1⁄2) If

you’re one of those who doesn’t have the patience for Jane Austen adaptations, filmmaker Whit Stillman (Metropolitan) may be your saving grace. Icing Austen’s words with a heavy layer of wit and pizazz, Love & Friendship goes beyond the page for a far more pleasing period-piece experience. Set in the 18th century, the film tells of a manipulative woman named Lady Susan Vernon (a killer good Kate Beckinsale) who uses an unethical strategy to capture the attention of a suitor for her daughter — and herself, too, naturally. At the Angelika Film Center in Plano, and the Magnolia and AMC NorthPark in Dallas. Rated PG, 92 minutes. — Preston Barta

NOW PLAYING Captain America: Civil War (★★★★1⁄2) Set after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Winter Soldier, Civil War begins with Captain America (Chris Evans) leading the new team of Avengers — including the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) — around the globe to stop some of biggest known threats. But after an international incident, mounting political pressure leads to regulations that force superheroes to register with the government. While some players, such as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), are on board, others don’t see a reason to be policed, sparking the titular “civil war.” Civil War will set both head and heart running, and that is the secret to its thrill. Rated PG-13, 146 minutes. — P.B.

Following the unprecedented success of 2014’s Neighbors, Universal Pictures has brought us back to check in on Mac and Kelly Radner (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) to see how their now-quiet household has been since they successfully gave the boot to the frat boys of Delta Psi Beta. Well, as luck would have it, things are not too good. There’s a new situation brewing, and this time it’s the ladies of Kappa Nu raising Cain. Chloe Grace Moretz (The Fifth Wave), Kiersey Clemons (Dope) and Beanie Feldstein

Black’s witty style, layered storyline and fun atmosphere are unmissable here. And while his screenplay may play heavily on the strengths of his leads, the film is so damn charming that it keeps your laugh levels at an all-time high. Crowe and Gosling are a dynamite team. They prove to have that hot-to-thetouch chemistry that can’t be written or forced. Crowe excels as Jackson Healy, the tough-guy enforcer. He warmly embraces his middle-aged skin and boasts a rare twinkle unlike any performance of his we’ve seen before. Gosling, on the other hand, hams it up as Holland March, displaying a quality he debuted in his role from 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love, but brings full-frame here. It’s as though he’s pulling from his

In a lot of ways The Nice Guys represents the buddy movie genre at its best. It’s a film that packs as much charm and humor as it does bullets. And boy, is it a blast! Like most films of the genre, Shane Black’s latest features an odd couple of private eyes (Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling) who initially don’t get along, but soon become fire-forged friends as they navigate 1970s Los Angeles searching for the missing daughter (Margaret Qualley) of a Department of Justice agent (Kim Basinger). It helps having Black at the helm, who provided us with Iron Man 3 and the underrated gem Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Both of those previous films are great in their own right and feature some of the same elements displayed in The Nice Guys.

Neighbors They create their own sorority (in the same house that used to be Delta Psi Beta’s), with an agenda that’s more than merely getting trashed and dressing for the male gaze. They’re partying to show defiance and prove their worth among the college community. Making a near carbon copy of the original isn’t always the worst idea in the world. (Hey, it worked out for The Force Awakens, but that’s a whole other ballgame.) What matters is the creativity in the humor, both remixed and new. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising isn’t quite as appalling as The Hangover Part II, but it’s hardly a sequel to emulate. The only thing holding Sorority Rising from completely following in the footsteps of The Hangover franchise is the gender swap, which shakes up the formula enough to still keep it carbonated. The idea opens up the field for the ladies to dish out and take over the bro-centric domination of the original

From Page 20

Nice Saturday Night Live skits when he breaks character and lets his girly shrieks loose — making the scene all the more funny. He easily gives the film its more memorable moments, such as one scene when he interrupts a group of environmental protesters.

MOVIES Continued from Page 19 The Darkness The latest Blumhouse horror film brings us yet another case of supernatural forces haunting a family (Kevin Bacon, Radha Mitchell and others). When a kid (David Mazouz) brings back a stone from the Grand Canyon, all hell breaks loose. Exorcisms, wolves and fleeting spirits — scares are sure to ensue with The Darkness. Rated PG-13, 93 minutes. — P.B. The Huntsman: Winter’s War (★★1⁄2) Prequel-sequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman follows the journey of, well, the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), while

Neighbors. But where this film fails to warrant its existence is in the comedy. It’s quite clear these guys are scraping the bottom of the barrel. While they point this sequel in a promising direction, the follow-through is nowhere to be found. Instead, they push the envelope too far with grossout humor, such as the girls throwing used tampons at the Radners’ house, man parts poking out of shorts, and a gag about pregnancy that’s too foul to even mention. There are a few chuckles to be had in Sorority Rising, primarily from Zac Efron, who reprises his role as Teddy Sanders. Unfortunately, the film’s more accomplished qualities (gags about being a bad parent) are held back by its tasteless tricks. The Good Book tells us to “love thy neighbor as thyself.” However, it says nothing about loving Neighbors 2, and this lackluster sequel exhibits this on full display. At times, the story may get clunky or push a joke too far, but the narrative is superior to the usual buddy-cop genre film. Surprisingly, it has a lot of heart and depth, making The Nice Guys one of the more satisfying features of the year. PRESTON BARTA is a member of the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association.
