randon Rhyder is a country musician who found inspiration for one of the songs on his recent album in an unlikely place: a Tshirt. He saw a fan wearing a Tshirt from the Katydid Collection, created by a Dallas designer. He sat down in the back of Gilley’s Dallas and wrote the song “Rock Angel,” the first single released from his Head Above Water album. He will be playing that and other songs off the album tonight at Rockin’ Rodeo. After writing “Rock Angel” he sat down with Katy Messersmith, owner of the Katydid Collection, and she designed a T-shirt to go along with his song. “‘Rock Angel’ has completely lived a life of its own,” Rhyder said. The singer draws most of his inspiration from life, including

Their band, Everybody Was in the French Resistance … Now!, recorded Fixin’ the Charts, Volume One, out on the Cooking Vinyl label. Morton said the philosophy of Sufi is that love is the greatest thing in the world and it is the only thing a person takes to his or her next life. As Texas Poet Laureate, Morton wants to reach students in secondary education by hosting an art contest and featuring winning poems and/or artwork in a book that will also consist of poems she writes about each town she visits, Morton said. “Anytime we can bring arts and poetry to the forefront of an event, I’m always excited,” she said. — Rachel Mehlhaff Hunter, Blinded by Bears, 9pm. an’s Silverleaf has had a busy week, with Sarah Jaffe packing the house for her album release and “Cross Pollination” mashing dance, theater and live music up tonight. Friday, Denton Americana artist Doug Burr plays, sharing a bill with Spune label-mate Telegraph Canyon. Glen Farris will share the stage with Burr, who’s celebrating the release of his fourth album, O Ye Devastator. Devastator is the follow-up to Burr’s setting of the Psalms, The Shawl. After Burr finally got his treatment of the Bible’s best poetry recorded, fans had a collection of soulful songs that, taken together, feel like a lullaby. With Devastator, Burr’s soul is no longer soothed. It does a slow burn, and flares more than once through the course of the album. Sounds like: Ray LaMontagne and Neil Young chilling out on a long, dusty country road. Details: Farris, a regular stage-mate of Burr’s, opens at 10 p.m. Burr goes on at 10:45 p.m., followed by Telegraph Canyon. Cover is $10. Dan’s Silverleaf is at 103 Industrial St. For more information, visit www.danssilverleaf.com. I Denton post-punk outfit On After Dark play Hailey’s Club on Saturday night, sharing the bill with Denton band Bad Design and Dallas’ Cocky Americans. The band headlines after sets by Black Bone Child, Fatty Lumpkin and Achtoene. Ratliff himself leads on vocals, with

Andrew Jordan Miller on keyboard, Matthew Woods on drums, Alex Gates on bass and Felix Tellez on guitar. The group plays without a label, laying chiming keyboard over steady bass and smooth guitar. Jazz and folk twine around each other and Ratliff croons easily. Sounds like: Jim Morrison making the lounge a cool place to be; a jazz club house band with a habit of reading Eudora Welty before going on. In the end, jazz sensibility wins out. Details: Doors open at 7 p.m. Show starts at 9:30 p.m. Cover is $6 for 21 and up, $9 for under 21. The Boiler Room is located at 101 W. n the mood for a con game without the risk? Music Theatre of Denton closes its performance of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels this weekend. Based on the 1988 film, the story finds swindlers Lawrence Jameson and a rookie named Freddy, horns locked, nostrils flaring for dominance over the French Riviera. Jameson (Tyler Donahue) dotes on women to win their financial favor. Freddy (Justin Harmon) is rough around the edges, and pretends to be a prince who talks women out of their jewelry to fund a fictitious revolution. The rivalry grows when Christine Colgate (Kelsey

Macke) is on her way to the hotel where they’ve set up shop. She’s called a “soap queen,” and the con men bet one another that they can cheat $50,000 from the socialite. The loser has to leave the Riviera. The musical comedy by David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane is rated PG-13 for language and mature themes. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. A closing matinee is 2 p.m. Sunday. Performances are at The Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets cost $18 for adults, $16 for seniors and $10 for students. OPENING FRIDAY Kites (##) Over-directed, overwrought, Bollywood nonsense about a Las Vegas grifter who runs a scam of marrying immigrants. He becomes entangled with a local Indian-national mobster whose violent son is about to marry one of the grifter’s so-called brides. All of a sudden, the bogus married couple loves each other and is fleeing from cops and the mobsters. The excessive extreme close-ups, non-stop syrupy music, and fast cutting might appeal mostly to fans of the genre. Not rated, 130 minutes. — Boo Allen MacGruber (#1/2) The latest bigscreen expansion of a Saturday Night Live sketch has the same problem as most of the others — it runs out of gas at feature length. It stars Will Forte in the title role as a government assassin who comes out of retirement to avenge his wife’s murder by taking down his villainous archrival, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer). With energy to spare, there simply aren’t enough fresh laughs (the villain’s name is funny only so many times) and the film becomes a chore to endure. Also stars Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe. Rated R, 99 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Multiple Sarcasms (##) Timothy Hutton shines in this otherwise dreary and pretentious 1970s drama about an architect going through a midlife crisis. He’s unhappy with his marriage to his wife (Dana Delany), and so he retreats to the world of old movies, eventually trying to find catharsis by writing a play about his life. Writer-director Brooks Branch takes a simplistic look at relationship conflicts, and seems to miss some welcome opportunities for humor by insisting that his story is profound. Instead, it’s tedious and only mildly insightful. Rated R, 97 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Racing Dreams (###1/2) A treat for NASCAR fans and non-fans alike, this documentary focuses on three kids ages 12 and 13 who compete at the highest levels of the World Karting Association, which often is a launching pad for the sport’s top drivers. The film follows their success on the track, but also their insecurities off of it, ranging from the domestic troubles of one kid to another family’s struggle to find sponsors. Director Marshall Curry assembles a compelling film that offers fresh insight

Motherhood never looked as complicated or as painful as it does in Mother and Child, the interconnected family drama from Rodrigo Garcia, who showed an earlier penchant for this genre in his 2005 film, Nine Lives. Garcia has crafted an involving story of several women who want to fill indefinable gaps in their lives. At times, one or more of them might not even be aware of this yearning until it looks to be too late to be fulfilled. But Garcia does something else with his film that supersedes the dexterity he into contemporary kids trying to follow their dreams. Rated PG, 96 minutes. — T.J. shows with his superficially complex narrative. Garcia’s main strength in Mother and Child is turning his film over to his actors and letting them extract the subtle drama of his story. He sets up his camera, with fine, crisp cinematography from Xavier Perez Grobet, and then lets his actors convey the emotions and the message. He thankfully avoids a jittery camera, or rapidly cutting back and forth, even near the end when it looks like such speed might more rapidly progress his often overdrawn plot. Annette Bening, Naomi Watts and Kerry Washington turn in excellent, award-worthy ensemble performances as three Los Angeles women who have never really met but whose lives have crossed and will eventually cross again.

Each encounter brings an unseen influence on the others. Bening plays Karen, a dour health care provider whose midlife discontent might be traced to her malaise about having given up her baby for adoption when she was 14. That child grows up to be Elizabeth (Watts), a hard-nosed lawyer whose career success overshadows her cold detachment from relationships and normal human interaction. Meanwhile, Lucy (Washington) and Joseph (David Ramsey) cannot have children and set out to adopt from the same agency where Karen once gave away Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Elizabeth has a sexual relationship with her boss (Samuel L. Jackson), Karen succumbs to a hardearned relationship with a coworker (Jimmy Smits), and

Lucy argues about adoption both with her husband and with her mother (S. Epatha Merkerson). Garcia gradually pulls his threads together, while letting his characters develop into dynamic creatures who transform when confronting motherhood or impending motherhood. Garcia’s story often strains credulity. But the cast usually hits the right spots, timely conveying the needed emotions that ultimately make the film effective and successful. Lopez and O’Loughlin generate some moderate chemistry, but the eccentric supporting cast has many of the best lines in this contrived cute-fest. Rated PG-13, 104

A dancer raised her hand and asked why the arts in Denton wasn’t more immediately inclusive of dance. Today, a hybrid born of Denton’s creative class will bloom at Dan’s Silverleaf in

downtown Denton. Dancers, actors, musicians and filmmakers have planned a bonafide mash-up of performance. Before the end of this allnight experiment, patrons will be clear on one thing for sure:

Something’s going on in Denton, and it has something to do with shaking the cultural scene out of the will-call window inertia. In a previous interview with Sarah Gamblin, a Texas Woman’s University dance professor, the educator and artist said her piece, “Under,” grew out of her itch to get bodies moving to music made in her See POLLINATION on 10

own backyard. The piece was performed by TWU students in the spring DanceMakers concert on campus. The Big Rig Dance Collective, made up of TWU students and alumni, recreate the piece today at Cross Pollination. Gamblin talked to the press recently about setting the piece to three songs by Denton artist Sarah Jaffe. Gamblin, who’s set to perform new choreography to music by Denton band Shiny Around the Edges, said she’s afraid her idea of dancing to local musicians’ work could “get tired.” But in the meantime, that’s not stopping her. “I have this idea of an ongoing collaboration with Denton musicians, but I don’t know if that will have any appeal to the musicians, and I don’t know if I’ll lose interest in it myself,” she said. “I just know there is so much great music happening in the city, and the idea of working and performing with live music is something I’ve been interested in.” Gamblin has kept fans informed with teasers via Twitter, tweeting about flying hair and limbs. The Big Rig Dance Collective will perform the first two pieces from Gamblin’s “Under.” Big Rig is an offshoot of Gamblin’s

TWU company, Dance Lab. Jaffe won’t perform live, but in an earlier interview, she said watching a rehearsal of the work made her see her songs in a new light. Gamblin chose Jaffe’s “Two Intangibles Can’t Be Had,” “Adeline” and “Under,” citing their rhythms and emotion as the reasons. “It was a huge honor to see my artwork projected in a different form,” Jaffe said. “It was really cool and gave me a different feeling about them. I always have this emotion tied to each song. It expanded the way I thought about them.” Gamblin’s piece didn’t have a specific story, but tangled dancers together and had dancers pulling, pushing, catching and throwing one another. “I could definitely see how it all made sense,” Jaffe said. “I could perceive from the motion what they perceive in the song.” While dancers and TWU dance program graduates Lily Sloan and Bethany Nelson didn’t say Big Rig’s mission is set in stone, its dancers are occupied with “site-specific” dance at the moment. “In site-specific dance, you interact with the site itself, you create dance in relationship to a space,” Nelson said. Gamblin choreographed “Under” for the Margo Jones auditorium at TWU. Big Rig is adapting it for Dan’s Silverleaf — a bar with a basic stage. “We’ve joked about having splinters in our backsides in here,” Sloan said. “It’s a small stage. The physical limits are a challenge.” Big Rig is reprising a sitespecific piece they created at Banter, a downtown bistro where dancers jumped and hoisted themselves onto the slouchy couches, twirled around tables and borrowed chairs.

“There was a lot of improvisation in that piece,” Nelson said. “It was like a giant game of Mad Libs. There was always a structure, and everyone understood that they needed to stick with that structure, but there was a lot of room for play within that.” Sloan said some patrons probably didn’t expect to have dancers performing while they sipped coffee, beer or wine. “There were some people playing board games at the back of Banter who were kind of like, ‘Aw, do we really have to move?’ when we needed to move some furniture to make room for the dance. But by the end of it, they were peering around to see what we were up

to,” she said. Gamblin said her imagination is still moving. “Remember rock lottery?” she said, referring to a recurring event that drops musician names into a hat, creates new bands, and then ends the day with performances by the oneday bands. “Wouldn’t it be cool to have something like a rock lottery, but for musicians and dancers?” Cross Pollination will also include performances by Denton company Fight Boy Theatre, artist Martin Iles, Alex Benavidez, Julie McKendrick, P&G Sound Collective, NEEKS, George Quartz, Zamora Jose Zamora and DJ Sire Anthony.
