T
ex is back. Tex Zimmerman — a.k.a. Mike Steinel — is Bob Dylan’s alter ego in Denton. He’s both the star of and the man behind Dylanfest. The annual fundraiser is a concert of Bob Dylan’s best music — both secular and spiritual — by Tex and his All Star Revue. The festival raises money for Instruments of Change, a ministry that provides musical instruments and music classes to children in developing countries or in areas struck by natural disasters. Steinel and his wife, Texas Woman’s University voice instructor and soprano Beverly Hoch, founded the ministry and have ongoing programs in Africa and Haiti and recently began to prepare for a program in Alabama, where tornadoes have devastated several communities. Since the early 1960s, Dylan has been a prolific and
influential musician. Dylan borrowed from the blues, folk music, rock ’n’ roll, country, bluegrass and more. Dylanfest is a two-day event. Tex Zimmerman and His All Star Revue will perform Dylan’s gospel music in a 7 p.m. performance Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Denton, at 1114 W. University Drive. The group will perform music from the rest of Dylan’s catalog in a 7 p.m. performance Monday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Cover for the Monday show at Dan’s is $5. The Sunday performance is free, but donations are welcome. The All Star Revue features vocalists Rosana and Gary Eckert and Kay Sharpe, with Paul Metzger on guitar, Jeffry Eckels and Brian Mulholland on bass, and Stockton Helbing on drums. Dylanfest guest artists will include Carl Finch, Jeffrey Barnes, Mister Joe (a.k.a. Joe Pinson), Jeff Glover, Kathryn Stachitus, Casey Bachus, Andy Cooper and George Merritt. — Lucinda Breeding

Woodcut prints by University of North Texas art professor Don Schol are part of a series developed from his military service as an official combat artist for the Army. The woodcuts lend a mythic sort of feeling to a very human conflict.

rtist Don Schol has attracted national attention before with his series of woodcut prints inspired by his military service in Vietnam. Schol, a longtime faculty member in the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design, will soon release his book War Cuts. In
advance of the book release, Schol will exhibit a series of black-and-white woodcuts from his service as a U.S. Army combat artist. The exhibit opens this weekend at UNT on the Square, with special Memorial Day weekend hours: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday. Work by Schol’s wife, artist
Pam Burnley-Schol, is also in the gallery. Her recent work concentrates on cloudscape and landscape as a personal icon. Paintings from this recent body of work have been on exhibit at the Norwood Flynn Gallery in Dallas. BurnleySchol’s eye for realism takes on a more meaningful flavor when
the artist frames vistas of the sky and the landscape with a goldleaf-like paint usually found on religious icons. Regular gallery hours are: 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday; 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

unk might not make the top of the marquee every night of the week in Denton, but you can find it. Human Groove Hormone hits Hailey’s Club on Saturday night for the last of the band’s gigs before a summer break. The band labels itself as a funk-rock group, but with wavy keyboard effects and bright brass blasts winding around a locomotive of a rhythm section, this band of funksters leans more toward psychedelic jazz than rock. Like its name suggests, groove is a matter of discipline, but ultimately is the product of our DNA. Lead singer Aaron Schumacher can spit funky, rat-a-tat verses typically found

on the spoken word circuit. In “Smoker’s Corner,” his tenor drives a laid-back, upbeat song about toking and letting go in three miniature acts. An easy, bumping chorus leads to a more harried verse. Drummer Zack Haygood can act as the band’s ultra-precise metronome, or he can go a little nuts, propelling bassist Charlie Lotspeich into a rapidfire pocket. In “Festa do Sexo,” the outfit illustrates an entanglement of the carnal sorts that tells a tale of sensual surrender, and with clever poetry instead of the pornography embedded in so much Top 40 hip-hop.

equels almost inevitably are put at a disadvantage, especially in cases where a franchise wasn’t part of the original plan. Such is the case with The Hangover Part II, a follow-up to the surprise box-office hit from 2009, which was hurried into production to capitalize financially. In such a scenario, however, much of the freshness and mischievous charm that made the original film successful is now lacking, making the job of the filmmakers that much more difficult the second time around. What was shocking the first time becomes familiar in the follow-up. Most of the same talent is back on both sides of the cam-

Audiences will recognize various set-ups and jokes. The characters have been transported from Las Vegas to Bangkok for the wedding of dentist Stu (Ed Helms), who would rather steer clear of the bachelor-party shenanigans that got them into trouble in the first film. But once party buddy Phil (Bradley Cooper) and obnoxious loner Allen (Zach Galifianakis) enter the mix, an inno-
cent night on the beach leads to the trio waking up with a host of disgusting problems and no memory of the previous night. Stu’s impending brother-in-law, a teenage prodigy (Mason Lee), turns up missing in the process. The film coasts on the energy of its stars, who convey an amusing frat-house chemistry. Galifianakis gets many of the best lines, of course, although his character might be better in smaller doses. Likewise Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong), who returns needlessly and wears out his welcome. There are cameos both expected and surprising. As with the first film, the emphasis is on raunchy oneliners and gross-out sight gags. The film is hurt by comparisons to the original, and it really starts to drag in the second half, once you figure out where it’s going. The potential for a third film might be driven more by money than creativity, but the success of another sequel will require more than a change in geography.

Hobo With a Shotgun ( ) Tiresome exercise in style over substance, this tribute to 1970s grindhouse cinema (it was expanded from a fake trailer that showed with Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse feature in 2007), captures the gritty low-budget visuals of the genre but doesn’t hold up as a feature, save for amusing performance by Rutger Hauer as a homeless vigilante who blows away petty criminals. Credit director Jason Eisener for over-the-top audacity, but there’s nothing beneath the surface. Not rated, 86 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Incendies ( ) In this intense French-Canadian drama, a mother who has always been distant to her children dies, leaving them a will that demands they find their long-lost brother and father. First the daughter, and then the son, travel from Canada to an unnamed Middle Eastern country where their mother’s tragic life unfolds in flashback, which then leads up to their surprise discovery. Involving and emotional. Rated R, 131 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — Boo Allen Kung Fu Panda 2 ( ) Amusing

3-D sequel to the 2008 animated hit takes a smart approach by taking the characters from the original yet distancing itself with a separate story and tone. In this adventure, Po (voiced by Jack Black) and his kungfu friends are forced to confront a peacock (Gary Oldman) who is stealing metal to build an all-powerful weapon. The snappy animation and dazzling action sequences compensate for a script that might be too dark and introspective for kids. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — T.J. L’Amour Fou ( 1/2) Uneven documentary about French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent centers on the sale of his art collection following his death in 2008. But much of the film traces his life and career through plentiful archival footage and interviews, most notably with his longtime partner, Pierre Berge. The film is a must-see for fashion aficionados as it chronicles a man with considerable material wealth, but is less successful in using those possessions to create a posthumous portrait. Not rated, 103 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — T.J. True Legend ( ) The latest action film from legendary Hong Kong director Woo-ping Yuen, as you might expect, has plenty of spectacle but is short on story. Based on a Chinese legend, it follows a martialarts master (Man Cheuk Chiu) who must rescue the son kidnapped by his vengeful adopted brother, as a way of reuniting his family. The bru-

NOW PLAYING Bridesmaids ( ) Broad but amusing Judd Apatow comedy from director Paul Feig (Unaccompanied Minors) about an impending wedding in which a neurotic maid of honor (Kristen Wiig) threatens her friendship with the bride (Maya Rudolph) because she can’t get along with her fellow bridesmaids. It’s too obnoxious and overlong at times, yet Wiig provides some big laughs. Rated R, 125 minutes. — T.J. Penelope Cruz plays a former Sparrow love who joins him and her father Bluebeard (Ian McShane) in a quest for the Fountain of Youth. o what if Ella Minnow’s latest recording has just six tracks on it? There’s enough sound and sophistication for both longtime fans and newcomers to parse on Red Beard, a record that has plenty of bang for its thrifty buck. There would have been more, said keyboardist Trey Price, but the people behind Ella Minnow can be exacting when it comes to their own music. “It’s taken us a year and a half to record this one,” Price said. “We trashed half of the songs we planned to put on it. There were glitches on some of them and we just didn’t like the way some of them turned out.” Conor Wallace, the lead singer and one of the band’s two guitarists, said a software shift accounted for some of the songs on the cutting room floor. The band recorded and will release Red Beard independently. “We’d moved from using Apple Logic to Reaper ELLA MINNOW [recording software], and we lost some of the CD RELEASE PARTY songs in that transition,” Wallace said. No cover. “What I mean by that is that, yeah, we’re all working on the songs we write, but we’re also writing music that we want to write. We’re making music for ourselves.” In other words, the band is writing what they know. Wallace grew up influenced by his parents’ involvement in Denton’s light opera and musical theater companies, hence the moodiness of songs like “Black Apple” and “Storm System,” both creating a theatrical atmosphere with rock opera flourishes. Price is grooving on old school blues and prog rock these days, which come through in occasional piano chords that hearken back to ragtime or veer into flashes of jazz. In “Indian Giver,” drummer Stephen Reynolds’ love of hip-hop rhythms comes to the surface not with a booing bass, but by changing the track’s energy with snare and cymbal. Hip-hop might be known for throbbing bass beats, but the form also feeds melody on the treble end of things. Red Beard is bigger in vocals, too. The addition of Courtney Marie and Tiffany Graber gives the record a more ethereal feeling than it would have if See ELLA MINNOW on 10

it was just Wallace’s tenor (which sounds a bit like Aussie Dave Faulkner of the Hoodoo Gurus, though Wallace has more rasp in his pipes.) “People really like the girls singing with us,” Price said. “We had added the women to the band after the last recording, and we thought it was going to be one of those things where they’d record on this album and then be gone, but they stuck around, and we’re really glad they did. People responded to it big time.” Marie and Graber’s contributions bring an occasional nostalgia to Red Beard, especially on the hook-laden, uber-catchy “Storm System.” Marie and Graber’s sweet sopranos bounce along with the sunny melody, making it sound like a back-to-the-1950s ditty about a boy meeting a girl. The lyrics, though, are totally 2011 — they hardly mean to have squeaky-clean fun at the sock hop. A storm rages outside and in — don’t let the melody mislead you. “I like the idea of something big, lots of voices, and there is a lot of unison singing on the

album,” Wallace said. “I grew up around community theater, and heard a lot of chorus singing. My mom [Linda Wallace] was the president of the board of Music Theatre of Denton, so that was a major part of our lives. People can tell I like musicals when they hear this stuff.” In its prior incarnations, Ella Minnow was Wallace on vocals, using “timbres that are almost feminine,” Price on a hefty Rhodes keyboard, Josh Kitchens on a loud bass and Stephen Reynolds on drums. Wallace recalled being in high school and catching shows, and the scene being different. “In high school, when you’d go to a show, everyone was moving. Our drummer, Stephen always says: ‘Motion breeds emotion.’ I thought you could tell that a band was really good because everyone was moving. Now, you go to shows, and people just sort of stand there and watch. I’ve always been of the mind that, when I get up there, I want to make people move,” Wallace said. The musicians said they’re proud to have put out their fourth recording, and to have produced it according to their own tastes and intentions. The band burned the first run of the
