The pace on campus may be a bit slower these days, but don’t miss these two gallery exhibits this summer: “Drawing From the Ethereal” and “Different Tempers,” both at the University of North Texas Art Gallery. “Drawing From the Ethereal,” which runs through June 26, is a thought-provoking exhibition that explores the meaning and intention of line, as represented through a variety of media. It features works by UNT College of Visual Arts and Design graduate students, curated by gallery staff. The reception for the artists will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. June 8 at the gallery. “Different Tempers” will be on display from July 6 through Sept. 18. This exhibition explores the differences and commonalities of jewelry-making and blacksmithing, which share the same medium: metal. The exhibition will feature 14 artists creating a range of work made from the jeweler’s bench as well as the blacksmith’s forge, using such metals as gold, platinum, fine and sterling silver, pewter, iron and stainless steel. “Different Tempers” was organized by the Center for

Chapter 19 of Genesis probably isn’t known for getting big laughs. Denton actor-cumplaywright Kevin Wickersham didn’t shrink from the challenge in drafting and producing his original play: Gomorrah Go Go: A Perversion in Two Acts. Genesis 19 is a famous Old Testament chapter about a man named Lot, who decides to let two angels lodge with him for an evening at his home in Gomorrah. A mob of men come a-knocking, insisting that Lot hand over his visitors for punishment by gang rape. Lot offers up his virgin daughters to the angry mob in the angels’ place. Lot resists, and the angels reward him by taking Lot and his clan out of the city just in time to escape God’s wrath. “A couple of years ago,” Wickersham said, “I saw this really funny Internet clip about Genesis 19, and at the end of the clip, it said something like: ‘No, seriously, this really happen in Genesis 19.’ I thought: ‘Hmmm. Why not take this chapter and sprinkle it with gay stuff and caca jokes?’” Wickersham also directs the R-rated comedy, which opens today at Art Six Coffee House. “I literally, in the back of my head as I was writing and directing this, thought that this is a slap in the face to safe theater,” Wickersham said. Joshua Scott Hancock of Denton-based Fight Boy Theatre agreed it’s “a slap in the face to safe theater,” but said there’s

more to it than that. “As the artistic director, I wouldn’t do this if it were just that,” Hancock said. “It has merit, and it has a message. It has a message about hypocrisy.” The independent theater company jumped on producing the project right away, he said. Wickersham’s script uses the Genesis chapter as the foundation for the play. He embellished two characters: God and the Archangel. “God is running this universe, but he doesn’t want to be there,” he said. “In one scene, he’s running things while painting his toenails. Then there’s Archie [the archangel], who is completely frustrated. I’ve got a chorus of Sodomites, who are a loopy, horny bunch, two sexy dude angels,” as well as Lot, his daughters and his angry wife.

The comedy isn’t suitable for children. The script uses rough language, the story deals with nearly a full spectrum of sexualities, and David Wickersham, Kevin’s brother and an actor, said his part as Archie included a burlesque dance number. “When I first found out that my character was involved in an all-male burlesque sequence, I was like, you’ve got to be comfortable with your own sexuality and ask, ‘Am I OK with touching these sexy dudes?’ Yeah, I’m OK with it,” David Wickersham said.

OPENING FRIDAY Mid-August Lunch (###) Modest but charming Italian comedy about a middle-aged man (director Gianni Di Gregorio) forced through a series of circumstances to care for four opinionated old women, including his 93year-old mother, as he struggles to earn enough to pay his own rent. There’s not much glitz, but the characters are endearing and the film projects a deadpan humor that should strike a chord with older audiences. The episodic nature of the script is hit-or-miss, yet there’s a quiet simplicity that makes for a pleasant summer diversion. Not rated, 72 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time A British-accented Jake Gyllenhaal is the titular hero in this video game-inspired tale of a magical dagger with the power to alter time. Rated PG-13, 116 minutes — The Washington Post
NOW PLAYING
Date Night (###) Steve Carell (The Office) and Tina Fey (30 Rock) play two New Jersey suburbanites mistaken for two other malefactors and are then chased through Manhattan by two killer cops. Director Shawn Levy (the Night at the Museum movies) keeps the action speeding along while his featured duo crack wise, have numerous adventures and discover the hidden joys of marriage. Rated PG-13, 88 minutes. — Boo Allen Iron Man 2 (##1/2) Robert Downey Jr. returns as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man, and he again faces off against those who doubt his love of country and his ability to defend it. A few new villains appear, mainly Mickey Rourke as a mad Russian scientist and Sam Rockwell as a scheming competitor. Jon Favreau again directs, and it looks like more of the same, with few additional effects or breakthrough surprises. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A. MacGruber (#1/2) The latest bigscreen expansion of a Saturday Night Live sketch has the same problem as most of the others — it runs out of gas at feature length. It stars Will Forte in the title role as a government assassin who comes out of retirement to avenge his wife’s murder by taking down his villainous archrival, Dieter

Same ‘Sex,’ new city New scenery adds glitz and gaffes to sequel By Boo Allen
Sex and the City 2 Rated R, 146 minutes. Opens today.
Hear them roar. The four ladies who lunch — and more — return in Sex and the City 2, the sequel to the 2008 movie based on the HBO series and cultural phenomenon. This new edition takes novelist Candace Bushnell’s four main characters and follows them as they begin to hear time’s winged chariot, as the talk now becomes more about marriage, child-rearing and motherhood than about dating and sexual exploits. It has been 12 years since Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) first
appeared, but they still look gorgeous and sexy thanks to costume designer Patricia Field’s revolving array of outlandish but consistently glamorous creations. In this go-around, the scenes change quickly and often for extreme contrasts, allowing Field and her army of designers to create four new outfits every time the four transform themselves, whether at a Connecticut wedding, in the desert or at an Abu Dhabi hotel pool. Michael Patrick King returns as director, having also produced and written the unwieldy script filled with bad puns and awkward wordplay. But even though King lets his individual scenes run on too
long, he shows a Rob Marshalllike flair for choreographing distaff musical scenes, as the film’s most vibrant set pieces come when a white-tuxedoed chorus sings show tunes before a wedding and later when the four women take over an Abu Dhabi karaoke bar with their cloying take on “I Am Woman.” In between, the slight story picks up Carrie and Big (Chris Noth) in the second year of their now settled-down marriage. The others have their own concerns, but Samantha proves a heroine when she arranges for an expenses-paid trip for everyone to Abu Dhabi, thereby allowing director King to milk the obvious cultural clashes. He shamelessly resorts to
tasteless stereotypes and contrivances, as various dramas play out, with relationships, marriages and friendships tested, whether by sexy nannies, old boyfriends or midnight trysts on the beach. King slots in several eyecatching cameos, including Penelope Cruz, Miley Cyrus and Texas stand-up comic Ron White. But, in the oddest bit of cinema seen recently, Liza Minnelli performs the wedding rites before belting out her own stylized rendition of “Single Ladies.” BOO ALLEN is an awardwinning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.
Von Cunth (Val Kilmer). With energy to spare, there simply aren’t enough fresh laughs (the villain’s name is funny only so many times) and the film becomes a chore to endure. Also stars Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe. Rated R, 99 minutes. — T.J. A Nightmare on Elm Street Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley) is back to terrorize people in their dreams in an update of the 1980s slasher fran-
chise. Rated R, 95 minutes. — The Associated Press Racing Dreams (###1/2) A treat for NASCAR fans and non-fans alike, this documentary focuses on three kids ages 11-13 who compete at the highest levels of the World Karting Association, which often is a launching pad for the sport’s top drivers. The film follows their success on the track, but also their insecurities off
of it, ranging from the domestic troubles of one kid to another family’s struggle to find sponsors. Director Marshall Curry assembles a compelling film that offers fresh insight into contemporary kids trying to follow their dreams. Rated PG, 96 minutes. — T.J. Shrek Forever After (##1/2) All this 3-D and IMAX technology can’t hide the uninspired feeling given off by
this fourth installment in the erstwhile hilarious animated franchise. There are a few solid laughs, musical numbers and clever fairy-tale lampoons — the type that made the first two Shrek films so amusing. But this one feels more like a retread than a fresh idea, with Shrek’s marriage being threatened over his frustration with fatherhood and a midlife crisis. Rated PG, 96 minutes. — T.J.

Mike Steinel, a jazz trumpet professor at the University of North Texas — is one of the founders of Instruments of Change, which currently has projects in South Africa, New Orleans and South Africa. “All three of these locations have tremendous need of instruments and

materials. I suspect that there are closets in all of Denton that have unused instruments,” said Steinel, who asked that people consider making donations to the organization for distribution. Steinel and his wife, Beverly Hoch, a soprano and a Texas Woman’s University music professor, made their first Instru-
ments of Change trip to Kimberley, South Africa, two years ago with 300 donated instruments and a team of 10 teachers. “Faced with the prospect of taking 10 guitars to Africa without a teacher, I began to relearn the guitar,” said Steinel. He found a songbook in one of the guitar cases with the words to “Blowin’ in the Wind.” “I was struck by its simple beauty and power,” he said, and thus began to delve into Dylan’s music, his career and his spiritual journey to Christianity. Steinel came to the conclusion that Dylan is the most important pop musician and composer of the last 50 years. “He was the first [to] fuse the serious poetry of a beat generation with rock ’n’ roll. He redefined pop singing, paving the way for punk and grunge,” he said. “He was the first pop artist of significance to be equal parts composer and singer.” Steinel originally wanted to call the band Zimmerman, a nod to Bob Dylan’s birth name, Robert Allen Zimmerman.

He discovered there was a Dylan cover band called Zimmerman already, but he didn’t want to give up the name entirely. Eventually, Texas Zimmerman and His All Star Revue came to mind. “We were doing, in a way, an oldfashioned review with a variety of performers,” said Steinel. “It was all supposed to be one day, then two, adding the gospel concert. Long story short, it was so much fun that even an hour after the last note, I was already, in my mind, planning the next Dylanfest.” Steinel recruited some of the top area musicians to form the backup band. “I sought out singers who I knew were good enough to do any style, then a rhythm section,” he said. The All Star band that will be performing on both concerts includes vocalists Rosana and Gary Eckert and Gale Cruz, guitarist Paul Metzger, bassist Jeffry Eckels and drummer Stockton Helbing. Special guests include guitarist Thad Bonduris, clar-

Andy Cooper Rosana Eckert inetist Andy Cooper, guitarist and singer Link Chalon, and singers Beverly Hoch, Lisa Horan, Melissa McMillan, and Gwynne and Miles Johnson. The Sunday night concert will feature Dylan’s gospel music. “Dylan’s music brims with biblical ref-
erences and what many, in retrospect, identify as theological messages from the earliest years,” said Steinel. “With that in mind, we are including songs such as ‘Blowin’ in the Wind,’ ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’’ and ‘When the Ship Comes In.’” Steinel also arranged three songs for choir and has recruited voices from “a
broad spectrum of the Denton music community.” On Monday, he said, “We’re doing a broad cross-section of his music” from Dylan’s earliest album in 1961 to his more current music. The styles range from hard rock to folk to country with “a jazz tinge,” said Steinel. “Because we’re all jazz musicians, it comes out sort of jazzy,” he said. Denton City Council member Pete Kamp will also be making a special appearance during the concert on Monday night, Steinel said. “She’s a good gal. She’s been part of Denton a long time,” he said. Instruments of Change is under the umbrella of Covenant Children, a
Christian charity whose mission is to provide safety, shelter, water, food, basic health care and education for orphans and at-risk children and adults around the world. Hoch, also a founder of Instruments of Change and a board member for Covenant Children, recently returned from Haiti, where she accompanied Covenant Children founders Ardith and Andrew Blumenthal to scout out a location for a concert, scheduled for the anniversary of the Haitian earthquake in January 2011.
