ndustrial Street in Denton, a business district sandwiched between East Hickory and East Mulberry streets, has provided entertainment, food and service to the people of Denton for a few years now. This Saturday will mark the fourth annual Industrial Street Bash, an outreach of appreciation to the community these businesses serve. This year’s bash — moved from April to June to avoid rain — was organized by Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Rooster’s Roadhouse, Seniors in Motion, Dan’s Silverleaf and Little Guys Movers. Under the name of the Industrial Street Guild, they’ll couple good food and fun with live shows, vendors and kidfriendly activities. “We put this event on annually to thank all the folks in the community who support us and make Denton such a special place to live and run a business,” said Dan Mojica, coowner of Dan’s Silverleaf. The bash starts at 11 a.m. Saturday. Overground Productions will set up a 30-by-40-

The University of North Texas will again bring and operate a bounce house for kids, while Texas Woman’s University will provide face painting and temporary tattoos. Around a dozen local vendors will set up stands during the bash. Recycled Books Records CDs will be present alongside Jimmy Barbour’s diverse woodwork stand Something Wood and Robin Huttash’s stained-glass pieces. Pan Ector Industries will

This year’s bash will also feature a chili cook-off, sanctioned by Chili Appreciation Society International, for 25 to 30 teams to compete in. “We’re starting off small, but it’s our hope that it can grow to be a big part of the event,” Alan Pierce of Rooster’s Roadhouse said. The event is expected to draw 2,000 to 3,000 people. “We have been planning this since last year’s event, selecting bands, reserving stages, getting sponsorships, finding vendors and working with the city of Denton,” Marcus Watson of Lit-

tle Guys Movers said in an email. “It takes quite a lot of work to put on an event, and everybody in the guild pitches in.” Despite the work needed to organize and run the Industrial Street Bash, the purpose of honoring the supporters of the Industrial Guild is not forgotten. “Denton is a town that is peopled by an incredible number of talented, intelligent and discerning individuals,” Mojica said. “To be able to rub shoulders with them daily is truly an honor.”

Denton’s dark side Fight Boy Theatre lovingly skewers local legend

F

ight Boy Theatre skewers Denton’s historical moments of shame — or something close to it — in Kevin Wickersham and Bryan Patrick’s latest play, What Actually Happened (A Completely Accurate and Unbiased History of Denton). The play promises to be a sardonic and loving look into Denton’s past.

Wickersham established his playwriting know-how last summer with Gommorah Go-Go. In What Actually Happened, Sprinkles the magic storyteller looks to answer some burning questions about Denton and Denton denizens: Was Mean Joe Greene really that mean? Who shot Peter Weller’s RoboCop? Will Roy Orbison

ever take off his shades? Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday this weekend and June 9-11 at Art Six Coffee House, 424 Bryan St. Tickets cost $8 at the door. Seating is general admission. The show is rated R for language, violence and mature themes. — Lucinda Breeding DRC file photo

Denton Benefit trades summer Time fun for tornado relief

06 02 11

A local student housing complex plans to trade a lot of fun on Saturday in exchange for a little relief for the survivors of the April 27 tornadoes that hit Birmingham, Ala. The Ridge at North Texas, at 2700 Colorado Blvd., will hold a benefit from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday in the grotto near the property’s swimming pool. “This year has been the worst year for tornadoes since the 1950s,” said community assistant Brent Camp. “We wanted to do something to kick off the summer, and when we started talking about a benefit to help the folks from Birmingham, I just jumped on board, pretty much.” Admission is free, and the complex will accept donations of money and canned goods. Everything that is collected will be sent to the American Red Cross for Birmingham, he said. Raffles will go on all day, along with a pool party and basketball game. A concert will start at 6 p.m. with country band 2nd Floor Request, indie rock group Alphabet, pop-folk musician Mary Walker and Delta blues musician Jeb Alan Rutherford. Those who attend are welcome to bring coolers and chairs, Camp said. — Lucinda Breeding

aura Pleasants says metal band Kylesa is simply a rhythmically based group. It wasn’t a gimmick when the band put two drum kits on the stage and in the studio. “The songs we write are based on rhythm and groove rather than a flurry of notes,” said Pleasants, singer and guitarist of the band from Savannah, Ga. “We thought it would be heavier to have a bigger rhythm section, and eventually our songwriting just went that direction. We started writing for two drummers.” Kylesa stops in Denton on Saturday night at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. The band deals in a dark, sober kind of music that bends toward metal in one song and rock in the next. The group tours in support of Spiral Shadow, released last year on Season of Mist Records. Pleasants said she and percussionist Phillip Cope wanted Spiral Shadow to have some

heft, but they also wanted their songs to be able to break the earthbound atmosphere of the record and get a little celestial. They ultimately wanted to record an album of songs that could fill a live space, but that would be “a headphone record,” she said. Sure, Kylesa can play loud, but it can also put baroque touches on subtle passages of music. “One of the things we go for is a lot of heavy layering, and it’s all relatively composed,” Pleasants said. “We have a similar approach to playing live — heavily textured and heavily layered. On our latest record, we recorded the rhythm, but then they recorded the same part with hand drum, and layered it over the rhythm we’d

The band hit the road last week for a summer on the road that includes some prestigious festivals, including Bonnaroo, Pitchfork Music Festival and Maryland Death Fest — which Pleasants called “really metal.” “It’s really flattering to get invitations to these festivals,” she said. Kylesa said the market for

But we’d play punk shows, rock shows, art rock shows. We’ve always played with different types of bands,” she said. “I do think the crossover that we do is generally more accepted now with what we do. Sure, we still get people telling us, ‘That is not metal,’ or ‘That is not rock enough,’ but generally, I think this cross-pollination has been pretty good.” Saturday’s show is presented by D.H.S. it and whimsy are sure things at Twilight Tunes today on the downtown Denton Square. Miss Polly and Her Tiny Big Band play during the free summer concert. Frontwoman Polly Maynard has been performing music made for children since she became a mother to twins about seven years ago. Miss Polly and the gang are inviting children to wear their pajamas to the show. “June 2nd is the last day of school for Denton ISD, so the kids get to stay up late,” Maynard said. “If they want to wear PJs and howl at the moon, we encourage — but don’t require — that.” The band released its album All Day Fun several years ago. Maynard said the band’s music is maturing along with her daughters, Millie and Sylvia. “Since they’re in the duallanguage program at Wilson [Elementary School], I’m trying to write more bilingual songs,” Maynard said. “And there are fewer songs about diapers and naptime, and more songs about things that they find scary or confusing. Also, they enjoy wordplay so much, many of the songs have silly rhymes, goofy actions and sur-

But we now have more games, dances, contests and activities for the children that attend the concerts,” she said. “No new recording yet, although we’re working on it.” Twilight Tunes is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Thursday in May and June. OPENING FRIDAY Paris After Midnight (####) In his 41st feature, the 75-year-old Woody Allen shows a still playful imagination with his story of a blocked writer (Owen Wilson) and his fiancee (Rachel McAdams) on a visit to Paris. Several times, when he strolls alone after midnight, he enters a strange time warp, sending him back to Paris of the 1920s, thereby enabling him to mingle with F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and his mistress (Marion Cotillard), and even receives help from Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates) on his novel. Whimsical and funny, with plenty to say, particularly that life is short but art is immortal. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — Boo Allen The Lion of Judah (#1/2) Except for a terrific soundtrack, this animated film is a jumbled mess, its Bible stories held loosely together by a group of animals so annoying you’ll wish Noah had left them off the ark. Judah (voiced by Georgina Cordova) is a lamb with the heart of a lion. When he’s taken to Jerusalem to be sacrificed, an odd menagerie of farm animals decide to save him. Their path crosses with Jesus in his final days. Rated PG, 87 minutes. At regional theaters. — McClatchey Newspapers The People vs. George Lucas (##) Shallow documentary about the love-hate relationship that Star Wars fans have developed with the filmmaker over the past generation. The film consists mostly of nerds airing their petty complaints about the second trilogy and Lucas’ updates to the special effects in the original, and about his marketing obsessions. The one worthwhile debate comes over what right an auteur has to alter his work after it already has become a cultural phenomenon. Not rated, 92 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson X-Men: First Class (###) According to this X-Men prequel that begins in the 1940s and continues up to the 1960s, the Cuban Missile Crisis was simply a battle between two warring mutant factions. Director Matthew Vaughn complements the story’s silliness with some clever special effects and outsized production values. The excellent top-to-bottom cast helps

uilding on his reputation for unusual, individualistic films, writer-director Terrence Malick finally releases The Tree of Life, only his fifth feature in 38 years. The result is what will surely be one of the strangest mainstream films of the year — not that anything less would be expected of the Austin resident. Anything said in explanation of The Tree of Life will fall short of adequately describing Malick’s impressionistic apsmooth over rough patches, including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, January Jones, Jennifer Lawrence, Oliver Platt and, as the bad guy, Kevin Bacon. proach. The lengthy film mostly unfolds chronologically. That is, from the beginning of the universe up to today, more or less. With little dialogue, it advances visually with a barrage of images, including dinosaurs, the Big Bang fireworks, and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki’s luscious photography of natural beauties and wonders. But even when Malick reaches his story about a nuclear

family growing up in Waco in the 1950s, he keeps his impressionistic approach with a succession of short scenes and shots. By doing so, he probably draws a fuller, more realistic portrait of this repressive, often demeaning era. Malick wants to visit, yet shows little desire to return there. In these short bursts of scenes, Brad Pitt plays Mr. O’Brien, the demanding patriarch of a family of three boys and a subservient wife (Jessica Chastain) in the 1950s. Not much happens in this small town, but when it does, O’Brien shows himself to be less than loving. The stern disciplinarian stays grim, making his family’s love frustratingly out of his reach.

Malick’s story skips over a few main events, hitting them and then dropping them, challenging viewers to keep up and draw their own interpretations. Malick’s reputation allows him to cast stars like Pitt and Sean Penn, who takes a tiny role as one of the sons now grown to adulthood, reflecting on his childhood. Malick’s slow pacing will not enthrall some moviegoers. And some will find pretentious his avalanche of visuals that propel his story of life. As always, he refuses to make things easy, but those sticking with the fractured, often obtuse narrative will be rewarded. DR. ious and overlong at times, yet Wiig provides some big laughs in a breakthrough performance that headlines an appealing ensemble cast. Rated R,

f Sydnie Jolene were a contestant for Miss America, she’d never have a real chance at the beauty queen’s crown. Her weight is perfect — 110 pounds — but she sports a frame of fluffy white hair and has no problem with panting in public.

PARTY

But Sydnie Jolene isn’t a beauty queen. Not in the tiaraand-sash sense, anyway. She’s a Great Pyrenees — a gentle giant with soulful brown eyes and jaunty ears — and the 2011 Dog Days of Denton Spokesdog. On Saturday, Sydnie Jolene will pass her title on to another lucky dog during Denton’s Dallas Morning News 18th annual Dog Days of Denton. The event begins file photo Friday afternoon at Quakertown Park and continues Saturday. The event has a little of everything for dog enthusiasts — information booths, dog talent shows and athletic demonstrations. Owner and best friend Becky Petrusky said her 6-year-old shaggy white companion has been an enthusiastic ambassador for Denton’s needy dogs.

POOCHES

“We have been participating as a customer of Dog Days, as a family, ever since it started,” said Petrusky, a Denton resident and coordinator and vice president of Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue. “We adopted Shasta in January 2006, and that’s when we started participating with Dog Days of Denton as a rescuer, setting up a tent and bringing our dogs out to the event. That’s when the switch was flipped.” Ever since then, Petrusky and her crew of big white dogs — the late Shasta, Sydnie Jolene and Sanger — haven’t been able to just enjoy the festival casually.

EVERYWHERE

“Last year, Sydnie and I decided it was time for the big dogs to rule,” Petrusky said. “We decided to enter, and we sat down and wrote the letter, took the picture and sent it in.” Petrusky said she suspects the letter — which has to be written from the dog’s viewpoint — tugged at the judges’ heartstrings. In it, Sydnie Jolene reveals that her first family surrendered her to a Houston shelter, and that she was meant to become a guardian angel for homeless and abused dogs in Denton. >> Continued on Page 10

COVER STORY Continued from Page 9 The Great Pyrenees was bred in the French mountains to guard sheep, goats and people, Petrusky said, so being a watchful keeper comes naturally to Sydnie Jolene. “She is the alpha when I’m not home,” Petrusky said. “She takes her shift and watches the backyard. She is absolutely adorable with kids and adults as well. She is a very good representative of what the Great Pyrenees is about. She would give her life for her family.” Two weeks ago, Sydnie went to the local PetSmart for a spokesdog meet-and-greet and a promotion for animal rescue. Petrusky said the spokesdog played her part flawlessly, waiting patiently, sitting on a mark for photos and being gentle with young strangers. Christine Gossett, the codirector of Dog Days, calls Sydnie Jolene the busiest spokesdog the event has ever had. Sydnie Jolene visited Good Samaritan Village, rode in several parades in Denton and one in Lewisville, and appeared at a city event called “Take the First Step” to encourage citizens to get up and move. She appeared in the school supply and backpack distribution last August at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center. “She wears her medal at the dog park,” Petrusky said. “She is

Christine knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that Sydnie has given Dog Days the most bang for their spokesdog buck.” On Saturday, Sydnie will help Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue educate dog owners about the breed, and then she’ll lead the costume parade wearing her halo and angel wings — the costume she wore in her contest photos. Above all, the spokesdog will be an emblem of the benefits of dog rescue. “I waited 10 years to get my Great Pyrenees,” Petrusky said. “I saw my first at a meet-and-greet at PetSmart. At the time, I knew I didn’t have the living arrangements to support a big dog.”

Sydnie Jolene, a 6-year-old Great Pyrenees, makes an official spokesdog appearance at a December event along with her owner, Becky Petrusky. When her family moved to Ponder, they had plenty of room, Petrusky said. “I had to drive all the way to Houston to get my first dog, Shasta,” she said. “When my husband, Al, sees that glint in my eye, he knows I’m not just going to talk about something. I’m going to do it. “I started a D-FW chapter of the Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue. I didn’t want people in North Texas to have to drive to Houston to get their dog.” With her rescues, Petrusky said she’s able not only to teach

people how important rescue is, but she and Sydnie Jolene can remind would-be dog owners of the three things they need to be a good pet owner: time, money for veterinary care and good food, and undivided attention. “If you have those three

things, and you give your dog exercise, you will be very happy together as long as your dog lives,” she said. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

Caleb Landry Jones, left, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy and Lucas Till star in X-Men: First Class.

MOVIES Continued from Page 8 125 minutes. — T.J. Fast Five (###) The fifth installment in The Fast and the Furious franchise is a blowout of a movie with no restraints whatsoever. Dwayne Johnson stars as a relentless federal agent going toe-to-toe with Vin Diesel’s driving ace Dom Toretto, who’s again on the run along with his sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster), and cop-turned-outlaw Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker). Rated PG-13, 130 minutes. — The Associated Press The Hangover Part II (##) Much of the freshness and mischievous charm that made the original film successful is now lacking in this follow-up to the 2009 box office hit. The characters have been transported from Las Vegas to Bangkok for the wedding of dentist Stu (Ed Helms), who would rather steer clear of the bachelor-party shenanigans that got them into trouble in the first film. But once party buddy Phil (Bradley Cooper) and obnoxious loner Allen (Zach Galifianakis) enter the mix, an innocent night on the beach leads to the trio waking up with a host of disgusting problems and no memory of the previous night. With Mason Lee and Ken Jeong. Directed by Todd Phillips. Rated R, 102 minutes. — T.J. Jumping the Broom When a successful corporate lawyer (Paula Patton) accepts her boyfriend’s (Laz Alonso) proposal after a whirlwind courtship, she must defend their pairing both to her parents (Angela Bassett and Brian Stokes Mitchell) and his mother (Loretta Devine). Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. Kung Fu Panda 2 (###) Amusing 3-D sequel to the 2008 animated hit takes a smart approach by taking the characters from the original yet distancing itself with a separate story and tone. In this adventure, Po (voiced by Jack Black) and his kungfu friends are forced to confront a peacock (Gary Oldman) who is stealing metal to build an all-powerful weapon. The snappy animation and dazzling action sequences compen-

sate for a script that might be too dark and introspective for kids. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — T.J. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (##) Johnny Depp returns as Jack Sparrow in the fourth installment of the popular Pirates franchise. Penelope Cruz plays a former Sparrow love who joins him and her father, Bluebeard (Ian McShane), in a quest for the Fountain of Youth. Rob Marshall (Chicago) directs the pedestrian script but fails to add energy or find much of new interest. Rated PG-13, 141 minutes. — B.A. Priest In a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by wars between humans and vampires, a warrior priest goes on a quest to rescue his kidnapped niece. With Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q. Written by Cory Goodman. Directed by Scott Stewart. Rated PG-13, 88 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Rio (##1/2) The latest 3-D animated comedy from director Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age 2) is an energetic if formulaic talking-animal saga about a rare bird (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) from small-town Minnesota who ventures to Brazil with his owner (Anne Hathaway) to ensure the survival of his species. Along the way, creatures both good and evil cross their path. There are plenty of colorful characters to entertain the kids, even if it feels like we’ve seen most of this song-anddance before. Rated G, 96 minutes. — T.J. Something Borrowed The lifelong friendship of two women (Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson) is threatened when one drunkenly sleeps with the other’s fiance. With John Krasinski and Colin Egglesfield. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. Thor (##1/2) In this Marvel comic adaptation, Anthony Hopkins plays Odin, leader of other-worldly Asgard. He exiles his son Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to Earth, where he becomes the requisite fish-out-ofwater. A team of scientists (Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard, Kat Dennings) helps him return to his homeland. Big, brassy and loud rendering by director Kenneth Branagh. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — B.A.
