COVER STORY

Texas toast State gets lovingly roasted by local theater troupes By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor

enton’s theater companies are rolling out the laughs to start the summer, but neither Denton Community Theatre nor Fight Boy Theatre is selling fluff this weekend. Denton Community Theatre opens Del Shores’ Daughters of the Lone Star State on Friday. Shores is known for his sharp comedy. His Texas families usually wrestle with tradition and approach modernity with caution, and Daughters is no exception. Fight Boy Theatre follows up its sleeper hit of last summer, Gomorrah Go Go, with What Actually Happened (An Unbiased and Completely Accurate History of Denton, TX). Written by Fight Boy’s Bryan Patrick and Kevin Wickersham, the comedy is a foul-mouthed trip through Denton’s past, with the help of Sprinkles the Magic Storyteller.

In Del Shores’ comedy, the Daughters of the Lone Star State can either embrace change or face extinction. The cast of Denton Community Theatre’s production includes, from left, Dianne Randolph, Theresa Ferrell, Michelle Rose, Kim Campbell, Kay Lamb, Betty Ann Barrow, Pete Kelly, Carol Howdeshell, Jo Anne Cassell, Pat Sherman and Amanda Leavell.

ight women fuss and fight at the annual new member recruitment and Christmas party of the local chapter of the Daughters of the Lone Star State. It seems the group of civic-minded, charitable ladies is chugging along toward obsolescence, and three unexpected visitors upset what is meant to be an evening of strait-laced conformity and tradition. Their problem? Eight very stiff necks and a fear of change, says Betty Kay Seibt, director of Denton

Community Theatre’s Daughters of the Lone Star State. The chapter is getting very gray, Seibt said, and its membership looks to be facing a sure extinction. “The women have a very good self-

image,” said actress Betty Ann Barrow, who plays the chapter’s matriarch, Miss Cookie. “The most prejudiced character in the play says, ‘I don’t have a prejudiced bone in my body.’ These are women who like

themselves.” Del Shores loves these women. The playwright of Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will doesn’t hide his affection for his forebears, even as he prods their wounds and picks at their emotional scabs. “He knows them, I can say that much,” said Jo Anne Cassell, who plays Lois Wheelis. “My character is a founding member, and she’s the one who wants to fold it up. We all suddenly got rich, and our mission used to be doing good. Now, it’s not about doing good. Now, it’s ‘to get together and talk about who drinks, who beats his wife and who sings terrible,’ as one character says.” Shores’ comedy is set in West Texas, among women who grew up in a hardscrabble oil patch, then saw the town flush with money when the oilmen struck black gold.

The show marks the first nonmusical appearance for Denton singers Pat Sherman and Kay Lamb. Sherman plays Lola Faye Barnes, a member who’s just a hair too lowclass for some of the others’ comfort. Lamb plays perhaps the juiciest role in the play: Darlene Parsons is a wellheeled, affluent lady with a drinking problem and a knack for abusing the good nature of her housekeeper, Doll. Things come to a head when three unexpected guests arrive for recruitment. Ima Jene Winkler Gomez (Amanda Leavell) arrives, obviously pregnant and too intermarried for the elders of the chapter. Doll (Dianne Randolph) is dragged in by her daughter, Sharon (Theresa Ferrell). Sharon points out the elephant in the room: The Daughters See DAUGHTERS on 10

evin Wickersham wrote What Actually Happened (An Unbiased and Completely Accurate History of Denton, TX) to work through his rage at Denton’s checkered past. He enlisted fellow Fight Boy Theatre company member and screenplay writer Bryan Patrick to help him keep it funny. It was the only way to keep from crying, or something like that, the writers said. “I’d been reading a lot of history — a lot of North American history, like Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,” Wickersham said. “I got so mad, and I felt so helpless. I couldn’t believe what I’d been taught in school, and how it didn’t square up to what I was reading. I decided to take out my anger at history with my pen.” Wickersham said his anger got a lot more local when he spent his spare time at Emily Fowler Central Library, reading historical city documents. Wickersham said he couldn’t figure out what made him more furious, the overt racism and sexism of the city’s past or the entitlement of white men who profited from both. He got together with Patrick to write a series of vignettes, each one poking fun at Denton’s past and its people. John B. Denton gets hit with a lot of literary and political darts. Peter Weller and Mean Joe Greene take a few punches. Even Frenchy Rheault takes a glancing blow to the chin. Rheault, a Denton landscaping business owner and fundraising tycoon, attended the show during its opening weekend and gave it his orange and purple seal of approval. Oh, and Denton hipsters are mocked for all their earnestness, facial hair and skinny jeans. Company member Mike Stephens plays Sprinkles the Magic Storyteller. He’s a hipster with a slow Texas drawl. “What people don’t know is that we finished the script after we cast the show,” Patrick said. “It wasn’t done.” Wickersham said the come-

are too pale and too stale for a world where race matters, but in a different way than it did during segregation. Carol Howdeshell, who returns to the local stage after a long hiatus, said Shores got her thinking about her own experiences. “I was thinking of how I was raised. I’m not from the South,” said Howdeshell, who plays Clara Bell Ivey. “I realized I had my own prejudices, but mine were against other white people who talked so bad about other people. And it made me remember about being called a Yankee. “My father once calmly asked a lady at a drive-through down here if he could have a fork, and she started yelling at him, ‘All

You’re all so rude!’” Michelle Rose, who plays Vergie Hopkins, said she’s been a Yankee wherever she’s gone. “When we lived in England, we [Americans] were all Yankees. When we moved back to the States, we were Yankees but the Southerners weren’t,” she said. Shores’ play is sometimes painful as it examines how race, class and religion divide people. But in the end, Shores thinks mixing things up makes for the greatest potential among people. “The play isn’t really about race,” Seibt said. “It’s about change, and whether or not these ladies can embrace it.”

archetypes over and over and nobody seems to notice,” he said. Patrick was the flint Wickersham used to sharpen his jokes, which have an edge. “We have a scene with cowboys and Indians where the Indians speak perfect English and the cowboys speak gibberish,” Wickersham said. “Because, you know, these awful savages the settlers just had to fight were their guides and spoke all these different languages — English, French and their own native languages.” Patrick said he and Wickersham have a lot in common when it comes to their humor. They also have a policy about Fight Boy’s comedy: The company doesn’t issue apologies if jokes leave discomfort. “If Peter Weller and Mean Joe Greene sue us, they’re not getting anything,” Patrick said. “This is what theater should be. It should hold up that mirror. If you don’t like what you see, you can work on it. The most popular show on Broadway right now is Book of Mormon, and it’s by the guys who did South Park.” Stephens agreed that the company is the local theater scene’s “wild card” and has a

responsibility to needle audience while making them laugh. “I wasn’t allowed to watch South Park when I was a kid,” he said. “But now I’ve seen pretty much every episode, because it’s funny and because you can’t watch it without thinking about the way you think.” While the company doesn’t apologize for its potty-mouth playwrights or bringing up the past sins of the city it loves, Wickersham does welcome the audience with a note of warning. “If anyone is truly offended, I invite them to do the research for themselves. Go to Emily Fowler. It’s all there. Then challenge me,” he said. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

OPENING FRIDAY

13 Assassins (####) The latest samurai film from acclaimed Japanese director Takashi Miike might be his masterpiece. It’s both exhilarating and exhausting, telling a story of 13 warriors who team up against a corrupt ruler. Although it doesn’t bother much with plot, the film has an extended graphic battle sequence that will go down as one of the best of its kind. Visually stylish and carefully crafted, Miike demonstrates more maturity as a filmmaker by delivering more than just his usual blood-and-guts thrills. Rated R, 125 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Beginners (####) When the wife of a 75-year-old man (Christopher Plummer) dies, he decides it’s finally time to come out of the closet, even if it shocks his son (Ewan McGregor). But it doesn’t, as father and son bond for a few final good years as they both embark on new relationships. Funny, insightful, imaginative and cleverly made semi-autobiographical film from director Mike Mills. Rated R, 105 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen The Double Hour (###) Compelling psychological thriller from Italy follows an ex-cop (Filippo Timi) in Turin who begins an unlikely romance with a chambermaid (Kseniya Rappoport), only to see their relationship unravel during a rural vacation that reveals some secrets in the woman’s past. That launches a series of plot twists, some more compelling than others. The actors give convincing portrayals, and credit director Giuseppe Capotondi with some audacity in his avoidance of genre cliches. Not rated, 95 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer (#) Too obnoxious even for kids with short attention spans, this adaptation of the book series by Megan McDonald chronicles the adventures of an 8-year-old tomboy (Jordana Beatty) whose friends head to summer camp, leaving her with impetuous Aunt Opal (Heather Graham) as the final hope for an exciting vacation. The film’s frantic pace induces more headaches than laughs, and the character of Judy is off-putting for anyone over the target age. Rated PG, 91 minutes. — T.J. The Princess of Montpensier

Abrams’ ‘Super 8’ a super-fun tribute to genre flicks

By Boo Allen

Griffiths) and Alice (Elle Fanning), the girl both boys have a crush on. Abrams excels in attentiongrabbing, mind-boggling entertainment, providing a story here filled with drama, suspense, polished special effects and thirdact heroics. The excellent train wreck sequence shows how special effects should be used — to render a realistic event in frightening visuals. And when effects are needed for the eventual surprise, Abrams follows the recognized coda of less becoming more. The wrap-up may look overly familiar, but that can be excused when paying respect to the master, or masters, of the genre. Submarine (##) Pretentious direction drains most of the enjoyment from this mildly subversive British

riter-director J.J. Abrams phones home in Super 8, his science fiction homage to a long line of predecessors, which prominently includes E.T., the famous money-maker from his producer Steven Spielberg. The brains behind TV mega-hits Alias and Lost, Abrams delivers his own cinematic creation, even if Super 8 culminates by bringing together a collection of recognizable, but useful, metaphors of the genre. What makes Super 8 distinct from similar fare is Abrams’ ability to convey the childhood vagaries of hope and disappointment. He concentrates on a

group of six adolescents in 1979 who, like Abrams about that time, seem to be growing up more under the influence of movie magicians than other topical cultural forces. Like children in other coming-of-age narratives, such as Stand by Me, they face a lifechanging event completely unprepared. Yet, they rise to the occasion, proving themselves to each other as well as to

their parents and peers. The group of six spend their time obsessed with making a zombie film with a parent’s Super 8 camera. They sneak away one night to film at the local train station. An ensuing train wreck ends up giving them more exciting, and dangerous, footage than they had imagined. The wreck sets off the film’s remaining chain of events that throws the small town into chaos. Cars fly through the air, microwaves rip out of houses, and all the town’s dogs run away. The attention, however, remains not on the adults or the marauding military but on the group of young filmmakers, led by Joe (Joel Courtney), his director buddy Charles (Riley

(###1/2) Handsomely mounted epic from French director Bertrand Tavernier about a romantic triangle set against the backdrop of religious and political differences from

France’s Catholic-Protestant wars in the 16th century. It’s an ambitious film that has a little bit of everything, from battle sequences to intimate moments, even if the historical con-

text might seem a bit murky to outsiders. The excellent cast includes Melanie Thierry, Gaspard Ulliel and Lambert Wilson. Not rated, 139 minutes. At the Inwood in Dallas. — T.J.

comedy about a disenfranchised teenager (Craig Roberts) whose parents are on the verge of a divorce just as he’s trying to start a relationship of his own. Filmmaker Richard Ayoade loads up on heavy-handed visual gimmicks that provide more of a distraction than a supplement to the script’s modest charms. The film’s best characters are the adults, played by Noah Taylor, Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine. Rated R, 97 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — T.J. Queen to Play (###1/2) Warm, touching, if not always believable story about a French cleaning woman (Sandrine Bonnaire) with a newfound love of chess. A fusty employer (Kevin Kline) tutors her until she begins a second life, if not career, playing tournament chess, much to her family’s surprise and, sometimes, annoyance. Her blossoming evinces multiple changes. Not rated, 91 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.

NOW PLAYING Bridesmaids (###) Broad but amusing Judd Apatow comedy from director Paul Feig (Unaccompanied Minors) about an impending wedding in which a neurotic maid of honor (Kristen Wiig) threatens her friendship with the bride (Maya Rudolph) because she can’t get along with her fellow bridesmaids. It’s too obnoxious and overlong at times, yet Wiig provides some big laughs in a breakthrough performance that headlines an appealing ensemble cast. Rated R, 125 minutes. — T.J. The Hangover Part II (##) Much of the freshness and mischievous charm that made the original film successful is now lacking in this follow-up to the 2009 box-office hit. The characters have been transported from Las Vegas to Bangkok for the wedding of dentist Stu (Ed Helms), who would rather steer clear of the bachelor-party shenanigans that got them into trouble in the first film. But once party buddy Phil (Bradley Cooper) and obnoxious loner Allen (Zach Galifianakis) enter the mix, an innocent night on the beach leads to the trio waking up with a host of disgusting problems and no memory of the previous night. Rated R, 102 minutes. — T.J. Paris After Midnight (####) In his 41st feature, the 75-year-old Woody Allen shows a still playful imagination with his story of a blocked writer (Owen Wilson) and his fiancee (Rachel McAdams) on a visit to Paris. Several times, when he strolls alone after midnight, he enters a strange time warp, sending him back to Paris of the 1920s, thereby enabling him to mingle with Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and his mistress (Marion Cotillard), and even receives help from Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates) on his novel. Whimsical and funny, with plenty to say, particularly that life is short but art is immortal. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — B.A.
