Keys, riffs and surround sound Varied local lineup on Sunday; Tinker seeks video extras
H
ailey’s Club lends its house to Denton acts Sunday night, and the lineup brings on ambient, nujazz, experimental and punk music.
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
The bill is four-deep with Denton music-makers: Babar, Bleach Boys, Emic and Ops Esponja. Babar specializes in spacious instrumental music made between just three musicians. What feels simple eventually grows more layered and though the band is plugged in, it doesn’t do noise. Bleach Boys, a Rabid Dog Records band, does surf punk. There’s lots of reverb, a sonic chip on a young shoulder and more melody than you usually find in a punk band. For Ops Esponja, a mysterious Denton property that mixes drum and bass with nujazz, the music soothes the savage breast without putting the brain on chill. Synth lines hop along with smooth plastic beats. This is music that goes down good with an urban drink. Emic, an indie act that gives member credits to Shinsuki Jibu for “visuals,” also makes gentle electronic music that isn’t totally ambient but quite at home in a rock-only bin. Emic released its first album, and, we are all growing in a cycle, in February. George Kaiho and Semmei Kai play guitar, Kohsuke Tajima plays bass and Yuri Sasamoto plays drums. No rough edges emerge on the album. Emic’s sound is a slow-growing sort, swelling in an impressionistic way without falling into cold repetition. Sunday night should have something for the headbangers and air guitarists as

University of North Texas graduate Andrew Tinker has just the event for you. Tinker is recruiting a crowd for a video shoot coming up for the song June 18 in Rockwall. Tinker isn’t picky — fans and aspiring screen stars are welcome to the shoot. “B Sweet” is a track from his poprock album It Takes the World. Tinker said in an e-mail that he’s getting some high-grade help. “Dolby (yes, THE Dolby of Dolby surround sound fame) is paying for the production of this video to go on their 7.1 surround sound demo reel, and it’s going to be quite the production indeed,” Tinker said. “We’re shooting for three days, renting a two-ton grip truck, flying in a director of photography from L.A., we’ve got a model, a top-notch professional crew, the whole nine yards … and we need to make the last scene, which is an outdoor concert scene look HUGE.” Tinker made it clear that fans shouldn’t come expecting to hear a whole set. “This is not a concert,” he said. “It’s a video shoot. You will hear the same song over and over.” Rules: Andrew Tinker Tshirts are fine. Clothes with logos or brand names are discouraged. No alcohol is allowed on set. Details: Crowd shots will be filmed from 5 p.m. to wrap, which Tinker expects to be after sunset, at the amphitheater at The Harbor in Rockwall, 2074 Summer Lee Drive. Extras are welcome to come earlier. Perks: Featured extras will get $25. Food available on a first-come, first-served basis, and there will be an afterparty with beer. Let freedom ring D
enton Juneteenth is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a festival that starts this weekend and continues into next. Juneteenth honors the day — June 19, 1865 — when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to announce the end of the Civil War and that slaves were free, two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation gave them that freedom. There’s speculation why the news arrived late — from a messenger murdered on his way to Texas to the information being deliberately withheld — but what is known for sure is that Juneteenth is the oldest known holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. It’s also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, and became an official state holiday in Texas on January 1, 1980. Five thousand people are expected to attend Denton Juneteenth 2010. A slew of entertainment and activities are planned, kicking off with the Denton Miss Juneteenth pageant Saturday, where six young women between the ages of 16 and 21 will compete for the title and
cash prizes. The festivities continue June 17 with the Heritage of Hope Celebration. Community leaders and some of the area’s top high school graduates will be honored. New this year is a cultural arts exhibit that celebrates the emancipation of slaves. At 4 p.m. June 18, judging begins as grill masters compete to win this year’s annual barbecue cook-off. At 6 p.m., the annual gospel extravaganza brings together area choirs to rejoice and sing praise music. Some of the featured gospel performers will be Katina Sono Butler, the Kingdom Manifesters praise team, Archie Robinson, Lynn Smith and Tre Nelson. All of the events lead up to the all-day June 19 bash, starting at 9 a.m. with a co-ed softball tournament. At the same time, parade participants will be assembling at the Denton Civic Center. The annual Juneteenth Grand Parade starts at 10 a.m. Floats, bands, steppers and plenty of community spirit will wind through the downtown Square, past the Courthouse on the Square, to Southeast Denton, ending at Fred Moore Park. The celebration will con-

OPENING FRIDAY
Best Worst Movie Michael Paul Stephenson, a former child actor who appeared in Troll 2, examines the low-budget horror flick’s cult status with castmate George Hardy in this documentary. At regional theaters. Not rated, 93 minutes. Casino Jack and the United States of Money (###1/2) This compelling documentary from Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) examines the life and shady activities of disgraced, convicted and jailed former Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, whose sleazy tentacles are shown to have touched the highest levels of (a mostly Republican) government. Gibney uncovers some new areas of Abramoff’s malfeasance. Most of what he shows us is already known. But it all makes for entertaining, and chilling, viewing. Rated R, 118 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Holy Rollers (##1/2) Uneven crime drama, based on a true story and set in a Hasidic Jewish community in 1990s Brooklyn, follows a young Hasid (Jesse Eisenberg) who desires to break free from his life of arranged marriage and rabbinical studies. But a friend (Justin Bartha) gets him caught up in a European drug-smuggling operation that puts his conservative nature to the test. The acting is excellent, helping to smooth over some of the rough spots in the script, which eschews generic action scenes but also lacks an edge and a sense of conviction. Rated R, 89 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson The Karate Kid (###) A remake of the 1984 film might seem unnecessary, but at least this version changes some of the details, following a 12-year-old from Detroit (Jaden Smith) who moves to Beijing with his mother (Taraji P. Henson), where he gets beaten up by a bigger kid at his school, so he seeks advice from a wise but reclusive handyman (Jackie Chan). It all leads up to a climactic kung fu tournament, of course. While the direction needs more discipline, the backdrops are scenic, and Smith and Chan generate a convincing student-teacher chemistry. Rated PG, 140 minutes. — T.J. Welcome to the gun show ‘Team’ deserves a ‘C’ for chaos
The A-Team
By Boo Allen Film Critic
Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. Opens Friday.
The A-Team puts the pop back in summer popcorn entertainment. But being true to its 1980s television roots, it also has its fair share of corn. Writer-director Joe Carnahan brings his own manic “style” to this raucous rehash of ’80s revenge. This time, Carnahan and co-writers Skip Woods and Brian Bloom incorporate basic plot elements of the TV series, updating it with a brief Iraq war setting and a barrage of not-always-impressive special effects. The trio of writers obviously worked feverishly to create their plot of double and triple
crosses, highlighted by ridiculous escapes, unbelievable destruction, varying locations and one spurious disguise. The story begins in Mexico, giving each of the four future ATeam members, all former Army Rangers, their back stories. Jump ahead eight years and the foursome comprises the best special operations team in Iraq, selected by Gen. Morrison (Gerald McRaney) to thwart an attempt by Saddam loyalists to take a set of U.S. currency engraving plates out of the country. The plan backfires, resulting
Q’orianka Kilcher (The New World) as the 19th century Hawaiian princess who rose to power just as the United States prepared to annex the island kingdom. At 22, she became a crusader for civil rights for native Hawaiians who felt bullied by the new American government.
Kaiulani’s story is more compelling than this film, which provides some details of her personal life but doesn’t offer much in the way of balanced historical context. It shows us what happened, but not why. Rated PG, 97 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J.
in court-martials and prison terms for the foursome: leader Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson), Face (Bradley Cooper), Murdoch (Sharlto Copley) and B.A. Baracus (Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who spends the film doing a Mr. T imitation). And since they land in four different prisons, director Carnahan conveniently orchestrates four explosive escapes, reuniting the foursome in their attempt to right the oppressor’s wrong. Patrick Wilson plays the oily Lynch, a shady CIA agent who entices the team with promises of reinstatement and clean records, while Charisa Sosa (Jessica Biel), an officious Army officer and Face’s ex-girlfriend, works to find the four and the missing plates. With this many forces at odds, Carnahan has no trouble
in choreographing his series of explosions, whether in the sky, the Los Angeles harbor, Iraq, Mexico or Germany. Every place is home for the director’s penchant for blowing things up, shooting people and executing various forms of chaos. As usual, Carnahan overdoes his action sequences, mistaking confusion for excitement. Recognizing the good guys is fairly easy, but when one of Carnahan’s quick-cutting rampages begins, it is often difficult to define who did what to whom. Guns fly, explosions rock the air and bodies drop from the sky. It’s dizzying, but just about what would be expected of a summer popcorn movie based on a cheesy 1980s TV series. BOO ALLEN is an awardwinning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

light musical theater. Tennessee Williams’ The Night of the Iguana is no light bit of summer fluff. It’s one of Williams’ most introspective pieces, and not a cinch to direct. Veteran actor and sometime director Dennis Welch takes the helm of the drama,
which opens Friday at the Campus Theatre in downtown Denton. “I get pulled into the performances sometimes, and forget that I’m directing,” said Welch, who has placed the play’s Costa Verde hotel on the theater’s stage. The story has all the ingredients of a thinker. Father Lawrence Shannon, played by familiar face Sean Frith, lost his church long ago for sexual misconduct. The play finds him scratching out a life as a tour guide. For more money, he accommodates travelers who want to go beyond the tourist centers. This summer, Shannon backslides and seduces a young woman on his latest tour. Her chaperone is outraged, and means to make trouble for the alcoholic lecher. Shannon is pursued by Maxine, the proprietress of the Costa Verde. He ignores her advances when Hannah Jelkes, a traveling painter, arrives with her grandfather, a poet. Each of the players wrestles with a secret. It’s Shannon who burns with regret, self-loathing and a craving that clashes with moral code of the day — not to mention his religious values. Shannon didn’t lose his church just because he seduced a “very young Sunday school teacher,” but also because he shocked his church with a sermon damning their God, a creator who “acts like a senile delinquent.” “Shannon doesn’t like what will save him,” Frith said. “He’s like all of us. We know what will save us, but we don’t want to do it, whether it’s losing weight or stopping drinking or cutting out his wicked ways.” Sharon Barnhill returns to the stage as Hannah, a proper single woman who strikes up a relationship with Shannon. They are an
unlikely pair. Hannah is chaste and Shannon hasn’t often met a sexual opportunity he’s turned down. “I think it’s almost like holding up a mirror with these two,” Barnhill said. “They see the desperation the other has, and they recognize it. Hannah’s not a con person, but she can kick into salesperson mode like that, and read people to sell them her paintings.” Amber Bryant plays Maxine Faulk, the reluctant owner and manager of the Costa Verde. Bryant plays the role loud and gauche. For Maxine, Shannon represents the challenge she needs to stay interested in a man. “She thinks a man and woman have to challenge each other, and her late husband, Fred, didn’t challenge her,” Bryant said. “Maxine hasn’t had sex in 10 years, even though Fred died two weeks ago. And the cabana boys don’t do it for her. When I first read this play, I thought she didn’t want Shannon except as a love interest. But as we’ve worked on the show, I realize she thinks he can challenge her.” “Maxine knows exactly what he [Shannon] needs,” Frith said. “He needs to have a drink and stay with her.” Things come to a head during a single night. Shannon goes over the edge and Hannah saves him by sharing a secret of her own. And the iguana of the title? One of the cabana boys catches one and ties it to the hotel veranda so that they can slaughter and eat it later. The helpless lizard is a little too familiar for the

guests’ comfort. As for a villain, Frith said Mrs. Fellowes (Jeannene Abney) fills the role. “She doesn’t do anything unreasonable the whole show,” Frith said. “But she stands up to Shannon and pushes him to the edge.” Bryant said the company could explore the drama past the closing date and still not exhaust it completely. “There are so many layers,” she said. “The more we talk about it, the more we find.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940566-6877. defend it. A few new villains appear, mainly Mickey Rourke as a mad Russian scientist and Sam Rockwell as a scheming competitor. Jon Favreau again directs, and it looks like more of the same, with few additional effects or breakthrough surprises. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A. Killers An ex-assassin (Ashton Kutcher) and his wife (Katherine Heigl) go on the run after he is targeted for a hit in this action comedy. Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — The Associated Press Letters to Juliet (##1/2) Amanda Seyfried stars in this formulaic but ingratiating romantic comedy about a woman (Seyfried) who travels to Verona, Italy, with her fiance (Gael Garcia Bernal), only to be sidetracked into helping an Englishwoman (Vanessa Redgrave), with her priggish grandson (Christopher Egan), find her Italian boyfriend (Franco Nero) from 53 years previous. Rated PG, 105 minutes. — B.A. Marmaduke (#1/2) Ill-conceived liveaction adaptation of the comic strip
about a slobbering Great Dane (voiced by Owen Wilson) moving with his human family from Kansas to Orange County, where he encounters a host of insecurities when trying to fit in with fellow canines at the local dog park. It essentially turns into The O.C. with dogs, and what that has to do with the comic strip, I don’t know. But the humor is of the lowbrow and slapstick variety, and it features lots of cute animals mugging for the camera and bonding with their owners. Rated PG, 87 minutes. — T.J. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (##) Big-budget video game adaptation stars a buffed-up Jake Gyllenhaal as an outcast prince who fights to protect a magical dagger that can turn back time from falling into the wrong hands. As you might expect, historical integrity and plot — which includes the requisite love interest and sibling rivalry — are filler to set up a series of sword fights and elaborate action sequences, with a lucrative franchise as the end goal.

Rated PG, 116 minutes. — T.J. Robin Hood (##) Dark and violent big-screen retelling of the 12th-century legend stars Russell Crowe in the title role as the outlaw who is ostracized by the British government he helped to save, then becomes an ally of the oppressed. This big-budget version tries to tell more of the back story through a repetitive series of elaborate battle sequences. It’s handsomely mounted, but the script lacks character depth and sufficient goodversus-evil passion. Rated PG-13, 140 minutes. — T.J. Sex and the City 2 (##1/2) The four chic Manhattanites, still outfitted by Patricia Field, return for more of the same in this second sequel to the popular TV series. Although Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) has now settled in with her marriage to Big (Chris Noth), Samantha (Kim Cattrall) arranges a trip for everyone for a few days in Abu Dhabi, allowing writerdirector Michael Patrick King to milk the cultural clashes and obvious differences. Obvious and pat, but
should appeal to devoted followers. Rated R, 146 minutes. — B.A. Shrek Forever After (##1/2) All this 3-D and IMAX technology can’t hide the uninspired feeling given off by this fourth installment in the erstwhile hilarious animated franchise. There are a few solid laughs, musical numbers and clever fairy-tale lampoons — the type that made the first two Shrek films so amusing. But this one feels more like a retread than a fresh idea, with Shrek’s marriage being threatened over his frustration with fatherhood and a midlife crisis. Rated PG, 96 minutes. — T.J. Splice (##) Sci-fi thriller stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as married genetic engineers who make a breakthrough in the field of animalhybrid embryos. But when funding is pulled amid ethical concerns, the couple takes the dangerous step of splicing together animal DNA with that of humans, creating an unpredictable creature they must keep hidden from the world. Rated R, 103 minutes. — T.J.
