Skies to fill with thrills Saturday Denton Airport hosts annual show

can the skies from afar this weekend and you’ll see the airplanes maneuvering at the 2011 Denton Airshow. It’s better to catch it up close at the Denton Airport, though. The Denton Airshow is a blast from the past and a trib-

ute to present-day pilots and the machines they use to marvel fans. The headlining attraction at this year’s air show are two military teams: the Air Force F-16 Viper West Coast Demonstration Team and the U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet West Coast Demonstration Team Legacy Flight. The teams fly in formation, demonstrating the speed, agility

and power of fighter jets in the U.S. military arsenal. Crowds will get to watch precision flights, tricks and maneuvers performed by some of the country’s most skilled military pilots. The show belongs to civilian pilots, too — eight of them will perform aerobatics and maneuvers. The air show brings back its static displays so aviation enthusiasts of all ages can see and touch a lot full of planes.

Visitors can bring cameras, blankets and lawn chairs. But don’t bring backpacks, coolers, walkie-talkies or alcohol through the gates. Concessions will be for sale at the airport, as will souvenirs. Gates open at 9 a.m. Saturday at Denton Airport, 5000 Airport Road. Admission is $10. Children younger than 6 get in free. — Lucinda Breeding

‘Home’ has OK Sweetheart feeling restless O

K Sweetheart’s Erin Austin is thrilled to be on the road performing songs from the band’s debut album, Home. But she’s also champing at the bit to get the second record done. “I feel terrible for saying this, but I’m kind of bored with the album,” Austin said. “We’ve got songs for another five records, and I’m sort of ready to move on.” OK Sweetheart scored a set on the main stage during 35 Conferette in March, just one month before Home was released. Austin sounded anything but bored, drawing the crowd in with her steamy vocals and a set list that fused light and shadow. The band started out as a solo project for Austin, then grew into a group that identifies Tulsa, Okla., as its home base. OK Sweetheart has ties

— Erin Austin of OK Sweetheart watch the episode of One Tree Hill, and when they got there, the musician said her phone “just blew up” with messages from friends and family who caught the song on CW’s young adult soap opera. “We thought it was going to be on toward the end,” Austin said. “It turns out it was in one of the first scenes. So I totally missed it.” Home is suitable for a television episode. With moody music and Austin’s sultry voice, the album makes ample use of everything from girlish pluck to a deeper, more wiseto-the-world maturity.

Each of the 12 tracks is approachable and memorable. Austin said she spent a lot of time translating her classical music training into marketable pop music-making. She looked for guidance from some of pop music’s greats. It didn’t escape her that the most important contributors — such as the Beatles, Neil Young and Billie Holiday — pitched their music at the midrange, and wrote simple songs that stick in the brain. “I think I’ve always wanted the melody to be memorable, something that people can hum when they walk away. ledgling blues-rock man Chris Watson has been busy lately, but he’s made time to bring his guitar work to his hometown for Twilight Tunes today. Watson is young yet, but he’s already gotten the attention of the blues-rock community with guitar that brings hot Southern asphalt to mind. The Denton musician has recorded his debut album, Just for Show, released in 2009. Watson’s high-energy picking should appeal to fans of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jonny Lang and Buddy Guy. Twilight Tunes is an allages music series that is 6:30

Painter looks up for inspiration

Argyle artist Pam BurnleySchol invokes the spirit of modern British novelist E.M. Forster in “Ether,” which shares the gallery at UNT on the Square. What do Forster and Burnley-Schol have in common? A need to gaze up at the sky, where everything is out of reach, ever-changing and beautiful. The exhibit borrows pieces from the University of North Texas professor’s larger body of work, “Earth and Ether,” which ran at Norwood Flynn Gallery in Dallas earlier this year. “Ether,” which ends today, comprises Burnley-Schol’s paintings of the temperamen-

tal Texas sky. Serene and mysterious, the paintings take on a liturgical heft thanks to the artist’s framing them in gold leaf. When done well, skyscapes trick the viewer. They look like a simple proposition of swirling white and grays together. But the sky can be as challenging as water to paint. Burnley-Schol’s skies are personal and familiar. The paintings share the space with Don Schol’s exhibit “War Cuts.” Both exhibits close today at 8 p.m. UNT on the Square is located at 109 N. Elm St. Admission is free.

ristin Thomas said Texas Woman’s University’s summer children’s show opened students’ eyes. Johnny Simons put his version of Pinocchio in the 16th-century Italian style of commedia dell’arte. When local children come to see the show, a troupe of masked performers will crack wise, leap and dance and invite the audience to join the performers in the journey of a little wooden doll who turns into a boy. What will look like magic to the children is a yeoman’s job for the performers — a small ensemble of students and performers who are learning that children are a more demanding audience. “A lot of actors who aren’t trained in performing for children make the mistake of talking down to children,” said TWU graduate student Jennie Patten, who plays the narrator and trickster’s role of Arlecchino — the Harlequin. “I’ve learned that when you perform for children, you don’t talk down to them, because they’ll call you on it.” Thomas is in her second year of running the TWU summer children’s theater. She was a key player in taking Playmakers of Baton Rouge, a professional children’s theater, from a grass-roots nonprofit to a professional company that stages shows in the Shaw Center for the Arts, a top-tier space. Last summer, TWU thespians staged If You Give Mouse a Cookie and followed it up with The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Audiences filled the Redbud Theater Complex. That’s not necessarily a feat, but not every TWU production packs the house. “When we did Mouse last summer, we sold out both weekends,” Thomas said. “It wasn’t a fluke. Denton already has a children’s theater group that has children and teens performing for children. Denton Community Theatre is already doing that, and doing it well. When I got to Denton and started looking around, what I noticed is that there wasn’t a children’s theater that was adults making theater for children. I thought there was room for that.” Thomas is now an adjunct faculty member with the theater program, teaching a course to train adults to perform and produce children’s theater. Thomas said a lot of people presume that children’s theater is a lot like visual arts for children — neither important nor excellent. Not so, she said. “If you aren’t doing it right, children will be as blunt as it’s possible to be,” Thomas said. “Adults will do the polite applause while they’re going, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life.’ Kids? They’ll get up and leave. This class and this show [are] about telling a story that is so good and so engaging that the kids won’t even think about getting up and leaving.” See PINOCCHIO on 10 Staff illustration

Pinocchio Pinocchio is performed by nine players who don’t just play the roles of the classic story — such as Geppetto, Pinocchio and the Fairy — but also perform the stock characters of the commedia dell’arte — the trickster, the villain and others. The performers wear handcrafted leather masks adorned to suggest the character who wears them. Geppetto’s mask is brown, textured with a white feather for a mustache, and the fairy wears a fanciful pinkish leather mask with pastel dots decorating it. Pinocchio, as expected, wears a long nose. Thomas said the company will introduce the children to the masks before performing, just to keep from startling any young patrons. Cassie Henderson, a senior who plays the title role, said the ensemble has already tested the young audience. “I work at a preschool, and we came to my preschool to do the show,” Henderson said. “Cristin is right. Kids won’t fall for anything. When I came on in costume, they yelled, ‘That’s not Pinocchio! That’s Miss Cassie.’” Patten said they noticed other things, too. “Yeah, they were also saying things like ‘That’s not a boy, that’s a girl!’ Oh, yeah, and this one little boy went ‘Stop, you’re hurting my ears!’ And we weren’t doing anything remotely loud.” Pinocchio is meant to get young audiences involved.

To prepare the cast for the audiences, members of the directorial team shout out answers — some good-natured, and some challenging the actors to really make them believe the story. Senior Bethany Dunn, who plays the roles of Columbina and the spirit, said when children are the audience, you have to find the truth of the story and the character in dialog and in movement. “Truth comes from your actions on stage,” she said. “You can’t be truthful with your words and not be truthful with you actions, because kids won’t put up with it.” TWU senior Drew Maggs, who plays Razullo and the fox, said the class and the short play have shaken him up as a performer. “Being able to perform for

Pet defective fter almost 20 years, Jim Carrey’s career comes full circle with Mr. Popper’s Penguins. He’s back playing with the animals. And these are the slapstickcomedy kind of creatures, just like in Carrey’s 1994 breakthrough film, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. So they urinate only when placed above the face of a hapless victim, and move their fastest only when there’s major destruction or embarrassment to be caused. The film is an adaptation of the beloved 1938 children’s book by Richard and Florence Atwater, except this story shares little in common with the original, outside of the name Popper and his strange

affinity for the oddball pets that show up on his doorstep. In the film, Popper is an executive in corporate real estate who aspires to become a partner at his firm. His workaholic ways frustrate his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) and two kids, until he’s forced to deal with a penguin that arrives as a gift from his late father, who was an explorer. While Popper has neither the time nor the means to deal with

the unwanted visitors (more arrive, each neatly possessing a Seven Dwarfs-like quirk), he soon sees them as a way to reconnect with his family, even as his already shaky professional life starts to unravel. Carrey is well within his element in a role that requires plenty of pratfalls and mugging. And it’s good to see a rare big-screen appearance from Angela Lansbury, who still looks spry at 85 playing a stubborn socialite. Director Mark Waters (Mean Girls) creates a slick visual package. However, Mr. Popper’s Penguins is one of those films that relies on its main character’s complete lack of common sense to drive the plot. The film creates an instant and irreparable disconnect

Carrey tries to skate by with ‘Ventura’ lookalike with reality, yet still tries to convey a sappy message about spending time with family. It even pushes a bizarre anti-zoo agenda, making an enemy out of a bumbling zookeeper (Clark Gregg) who wants to take possession of the penguins instead of allowing them to hang out in a completely inadequate Manhattan loft. But such analysis is missing the point in a film that emphasizes lowbrow humor and cuddly animal cuteness. Kids might respond to those formulaic tricks as adults wonder what happened to the charm of the source material.
