Exhibit to study storied history of bridal gowns

or a lot of American women, the bridal gown represents the most expensive dress they ever

own. Most brides put time, money and sentiment into the gown they will wear when they join their lives with their mate. The Greater Denton Arts Council joins the Texas Fashion Collection in presenting an upcoming exhibit, “American Brides: Inspiration and Ingenuity.” The Texas Fashion Collection is curated and maintained by the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design. Among its collection of 20,000 historic and modern items of fashion are wedding gowns. “American Brides” features 40 bridal gowns, from 1840 to the present. The exhibit is sure to answer a number of questions about wedding gowns and traditions. For instance, it was Queen Victoria’s white wedding dress that started the tradition of white and light-colored wedding gowns. The exhibit will also document the changing silhouette of the garment — the rise and fall of hemlines, the volume of fabric, and handiwork from beading to feathering, from lace to necklines. The exhibit will also include designers and historians: Cat’s Meow vintage shop owner and Antiques Roadshow guest appraiser Steven Porterfield will speak at 11 a.m. June 28. Porterfield loaned some items to the exhibit. Texas Fashion Collection director Myra Walker invited Dallas designers Michael Faircloth and Winn Morton to lend dresses to the show, as well as Houston designer Victor Costa. The exhibit opens June 28 and runs through Oct. 24 in the Meadows and Gough galleries at the PattersonAppleton Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday through Saturday. Admission is free.

The camp is for ages 6 to 12. The first session is from July 21 to July 25, and the second is July 28 through Aug. 1. The camps start at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m., and the activities take place in the workroom of the nonprofit’s storefront at 215 W. Oak St. Camp SCRAP costs $175

per camper, and covers materials and a daily snack. Last summer, campers spent time painting, as well as designing creations that make use of objects that were discarded or were originally used for a different purpose. Campers will experiment with fibers and textiles.

OPENING FRIDAY Think Like a Man Too (★★1⁄2) The great appeal of 2012’s Think Like a Man is that it took four beautiful black actresses (Regina Hall, Taraji P. Henson, Meagan Good and Gabrielle Union) and put them right at the center of a film. It made for a comedy that was unexpected, refreshing and welcome. The sequel brings back the cast of the earlier picture, but the emphasis is different this time. In 2012, Kevin Hart was the big discovery. He’s become a star since then, and so he’s center-stage now, still funny like before, but alas, much of what made the earlier movie special is gone. This time they’re all in Las Vegas to celebrate the wedding of Candace (Hall) and Michael (Terrence Jenkins). The filmmakers’ efforts to be nonstop zany are misbegotten. — San Francisco Chronicle

NOW PLAYING Blended (★1⁄2) These days, Adam Sandler is a bottle of beer that’s lost all its bubbles. Drew Barrymore, in her third pairing with Sandler, still brings energy and conviction to her performance. Terry Crews steals the movie as an MC and singer at the Sun City resort where Jim (Sandler), the sad sporting goods salesman, and Lauren (Barrymore), the professional closet organizer, and their five kids end up in an absurdly contrived joint vacation. William Cage (Tom Cruise) is thrown into battle against extraterrestrials by an unsympathetic general (the excellent Brendan Gleeson), and then finds himself stuck in a mysterious time loop. Cruise dies dozens of times over and over, often in comical ways. Dying again and again, Cruise has rarely been so likable. This is Groundhog Day with guns. Jersey Boys is based on the Broadway production of the same name. It is, of course, a musical, but at its core, it’s a familiar story of loyalty. And for movies, loyalty cannot be better represented than in an Italian-American clan from New Jersey. Marshall Brickman and Rick Elise set their stage play and subsequent screenplay about singer Frankie Valli and his accompanying Four Seasons in the Newark suburb of Belleville in 1951. The soundtrack originates from Bob Crewe’s lyrics and Bob Gaudio’s music. Only by showing us the early influences on these young men — boys, really — can it be understood how such a feuding, disparate group stayed together. For a

Clunky direction, dull cinematography weigh down ‘Jersey Boys’ while anyway. John Lloyd Young plays Valli, the default center of a story that concentrates more on process than individuals. After various youthful scrapes and indiscretions, Valli (whose real name is Castelluccio) joins his buddies as the star of their singing group. From there, it’s a standard but drawn-out rags-to-riches-thenback-to-rags tale. Valli and his mates find success through a series of hit songs written around Valli’s signature falsetto warblings. The boys have their feuds, many revolving around the group’s alpha male Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza). Director Clint Eastwood makes the story almost as much

about DeVito as it is about Valli. DeVito is the one who always starts fights, finds the women, argues about contracts, and finally lands the group in financial troubles. As a result, the rest of the group’s characters lack any substance. Even Valli’s potentially explosive home life is dealt with peripherally. Some colorful characters pop in for too-brief appearances,

such as Christopher Walken as a mob-connected consigliere, and a flamboyant Mike Doyle as record producer Bob Crewe. Eastwood accomplishes the impossible, making the 1950s and 1960s look dull, hazy, drab and devoid of much color. Again using Tom Stern for cinematographer, Eastwood delivers a succession of awkwardly staged scenes, inert sequences filmed in visually jarring flip-flop setups. And although it is a difficult quest, the experienced and lauded Eastwood never conjures up the energy needed for turning a vibrant stage musical into a lively film. f you hear full-throated cries of “Hail Satan!” reverberate around downtown on Friday night, don’t worry. It’s just fans of the Mountain Goats singing along to a song about our city. The North Carolina band’s show Friday at Dan’s Silverleaf has been sold out for weeks, but we figured this’d be as good a time as any to revisit one of the Mountain Goats’ older tracks that’s perked ears and piqued curiosity around here — as well as a handful of other songs about Denton.

Sweet, cute to the point of cutesy, it’s a weeper about doomed teenagers (Woodley and Ansel Elgort, who played her brother in Divergent) who meet in a cancer patients support group and dare to fall in love. With Laura Dern and Willem Dafoe. Directed by Josh Boone, based the John Green novel. Rated PG-13, 125 minutes. — MCT Godzilla (★★1⁄2) Godzilla, that tail-swinging menace from the deep, is back with a pair of friends. What’s particularly weird about this Godzilla is that for long stretches, all it shows is destruction. Brian Cranston plays a scientist in Japan, working in a nuclear plant, who notices something very wrong on his computer. A stonyfaced Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Cranston’s son, a lieutenant, and Elizabeth Olsen is his wife. Unfortunately, director Gareth Edwards concentrated too much on the action to worry about the performances. Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. — SFC How to Train Your Dragon 2 (★★★★) The follow-up to the muchadmired animated How to Train Your

Dragon doesn’t play it safe, and that’s why it’s the rare sequel that doesn’t feel somewhat stale. Written and directed by Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon 2 returns us to Berk, where our young Viking hero, Hiccup (again voiced by Jay Baruchel), lives and frolics with his devoted dragon, Toothless. Five years have passed, and now Berk is a virtual playground for dragons and Vikings alike. When Hiccup and his girlfriend Astrid (America Ferrera) discover a vicious villain (Djimon Hounsou) who’s building a dragon army, Hiccup resolves to stop him. Kudos to the creators here, who took a terrific first film and made a sequel that, both visually and thematically, lives up to that promise. With the voices of Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig. Rated PG, 102 minutes. — AP Maleficent (★★★) It takes talent to walk around in a black leather-horned cap and not look silly. Angelina Jolie turns in a magnificent performance in Maleficent as the (now we are told) misunderstood villain of Sleeping Beauty. Jolie rules this film with a powerful acting grace accented by director Robert Stromberg’s film style that shifts from film noir to children’s comedy without a flinch. There’s just not enough fleshing out of the story

The Mountain Goats, “The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton,” from All Hail West Texas (2003) The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle took small-town life as a jumping-off point for this song, which kicks off his 2003 album whose cover advertises “Fourteen songs about seven people, two houses, a motorcycle, and a locked treatment facility for adolescent boys.” The “Denton” of “The Best Ever Death Metal Band” is less a real-life setting and more a kind of shorthand for the small-town mindsets that might oppose a pair of die-hard metalheads. In just over 2 1/2 minutes, Darnielle, with his strident vocals and a folksy but fiercely strummed acoustic guitar, sketches out the tale of two teenagers named Cyrus and Jeff, “friends since grade school,” who form a twopiece death metal band that never plays anywhere beyond Jeff’s bedroom. Like the wannabe drummer Nick on TV’s Freaks and Geeks, the teens’ sky-high dreams dwarf any actual shot at fame: “Jeff and Cyrus believed in their hearts they were headed/for stage lights and Lear jets, and fortune and fame.” But thanks to their “prominent use of a pentagram,” Cyrus gets shipped off to reform school. Darnielle hints vaguely at some form of revenge, but leaves the details for the listener to imagine. The song closes with a couple of rousing cries hailing Lucifer to end on a high note.

But ultimately, the song’s about the perseverance of the misfits, a common Mountain Goats theme: “When you punish a person for dreaming his dream/don’t expect him to thank or forgive you./The best ever death metal band out of Denton/will in time both outpace and outlive you.” In indie circles anyway, the song’s certainly outlived what one might expect for something recorded, fuzz and all, to cassette tape on a boombox. Darnielle has recorded and released hundreds of songs since the early 1990s, landing fans with his literary lyrics and wry, wise storytelling. All Hail West Texas, which was remastered and reissued last year on Merge Records, is the last of Darnielle’s solo home re-

Here, “You’ll find happy hearts and smiling faces/and tolerance for the ethnic races.” A TV studio’s worth of cheery townsfolk opine in unison: “Denton, Denton, you’ve got no pretension/You’re where the heart is, you’re OK.” Also, notably, the song manages to rhyme Denton with “10 out of 10,” “mention,” and “again and again.” Whether intentionally enough or not, the song’s relentlessly upbeat, pull-out-the-stops pop sound and its subject matter hearken back to the slightly less tongue-in-cheek Dynamic Denton: In Sound and Music, the 1967 one-

Brave Combo, “The Denton Polka,” from Polka’s Revenge (2007) For its sesquicentennial in 2007, the city commissioned some of its resident Grammy winners to pen an instrumental piece celebrating Denton. The result was the bright, brassy “Trippy Town (Denton Life),” and when the band debuted it live, band leader Carl Finch asked listeners to “imagine all the things you like best about living here.” But the band wrote a com-

panion piece that’s outlasted the original commission. “The Denton Polka” starts off in a minor key — “Troubling times don’t get us down in Denton town” — but the tone is one of bounding, resourceful energy. It alludes to the made-up motto of Shock Treatment’s Denton, too: “Life is best in the home of happiness/Peaceful rest in the home of happiness.” The lyrics command listeners to “dance, dance, dance,” and this polka with a klezmer-punk accent can get an audience bouncing on its feet. With his full band in Brooklyn, .357 Lover, this is a spangly, glammed-up version studded with bright keyboards and Queen-worthy “oooohs” cooing in the background. Shiny Around the Edges, Denton’s Dreaming (2010) Fishboy, Little D (2005) Teenage Cool Kids, Days of Denton (2011) Denton gets its propers in the titles of three releases from local bands over the past decade, although lyrically there’s not a lot to directly link any one song to any one place. Shiny Around the Edges, for instance, name-checks the Idiot’s Hill neighborhood with the track “Robinwood Must Burn” on Denton’s Dreaming. Steadfast band members Jenny and Michael Seman, who wield guitars, voices and more than their rightful share of effects pedals and feedback, chase after glimpses of hushed beauty in the grit. Instead, Denton emerges in the feel of the albums’ songs — the commonality is a kind of restlessness that comes from living in a college town with a population that turns over every semester.

The Bandcamp page for Fishboy’s Little D notes that the collection of hookfilled songs were meant to evoke the “highs and lows” of living in Denton: “crowded and hyperactive one moment, sparse and calm the next.” There’s a definite interplay between songwriter Eric “Fishboy” Michener’s quieter guitar-andvoice moments and the full band sound, heavy on pop hooks and plumped up by Adam “Sweatpants” Avramescu’s keyboards and horns and a list of guest artists. Worth mentioning is Fishboy’s 2005 album release show that crowded the Rubber Gloves stage with people dressed as local landmarks: Interstate 35, the Corn-Kits sign, the Popo y Lupe sign, the football mascot from Necessary Roughness. Lyrically, though, there’s a brief, oddball mention (“Girl, you look so pretty/I want to ask you if/You were a city/ Would you be Denton, Texas?” in “Our Escape”) and a song title, “Start Again (The Story of Two Feuding Denton, TX Neighbors)” — although the latter’s story of the narrator’s head exploding and growing back could’ve taken place anywhere.
