‘Divas’ belt out best for ‘Encore’ D
enton Community Theatre has its own version of Dreamgirls for the company’s only official fundraiser. Encore 3: The Divas isn’t about a trio of vocally endowed upstarts. It’s a tribute to the women who have pitched in over the last 40 seasons. And boy, is there some belting. Mike Barrow, the company’s managing director, makes his directorial debut with the stripped-down summer revue. “We sent out invitations to women we were interested in having on stage, and we asked them to tell us which two songs they’d like to sing,” Barrow said. “The idea was that the first act would be songs that have been done before by the company in the past. Then, for the second act, it was: ‘buckle up ladies, these are the songs that

you’d sing on stage if you had the chance.’ Not all of them are Broadway songs. A lot of them are, because we’re talking about theater people here.” The show has some real standouts: Suzanne Lewis (Emma Goldman in Ragtime) making the rafters buzz with a soulful version of “Little Girls,” from Annie; Cassandra Berry (Crowns), raising goose bumps with a triumphant crack at “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” and Leigh Anne Stadt performing a smoky rendition of “The Impossible Dream.” Dena Bruton-Claus (Annie in Annie Get Your Gun) and her daughter, Maddy, made a trip from North Carolina to appear in the revue. Maria Harris (Mother Superior in The Sound of Music) returns to the stage to showcase vocals that always seem ready for the opera.

Audiences expecting the show to riff on the popular meme of the diva as a spoiled, temperamental singer will be disappointed. The Divas is a homage to the grande dames — and the up-and-comers — of the Denton stage who have helped establish Denton as a recognized player in the state’s nonprofit theater field. Performances are Friday and Saturday at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. A gala dinner will precede the Friday night performance at DATCU, 225 W. erewolf Therewolf bills itself as a Dallas-Fort Worth band, but the quintet is a Denton metal outfit that lays typical vomit-voice vocals over surprisingly crisp, tight guitar and drum flak. Werewolf Therewolf plays the Boiler Room today. Even with the metal affectations, though, the vocals are confident and tuneful, which is harder to achieve than it sounds. OPENING FRIDAY The Good, the Bad, the Weird (###1/2) Visually inventive and highly energetic Western from Korean director Ji-woon Kim, set in the Manchurian desert circa 1930, about various groups of thieves, bandits and bounty hunters all in search of the same elusive map. What follows is a series of stylish shootouts and comically violent showdowns that offers a worthy tribute to the genre. It’s uneven, but also a wild ride that consistently appeals to the eyes and ears if not always the brain. Not rated, 130 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Grown Ups Childhood pals (Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and David Spade) reunite as adults. With Salma Hayek and Maria Bello. — The Associated Press I Am Love (###) Ambitious and visually inventive melodrama from Italy. Oscar winner Tilda Swinton stars as the Russian wife of a Milan businessman who begins a passionate affair with a young chef that threatens to unravel her affluent family in early 20th century Milan. The film has visual style to spare, and the drama picks up in the second half. It’s a passionate and suspenseful movie that too often lets technical trickery get in the way of narrative momentum. Rated R, 120 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. John Rabe (###1/2) Ulrich Tukur gives a powerful performance in the title role of this straightforward biopic about a Nazi industrialist stationed in Nanking who turns into an unlikely rescuer for more than 200,000 Chinese workers during the Japanese invasion of 1937. German filmmaker Florian Gallenberger offers a fresh take on a familiar story. Although the script has a mechanical structure and tweaks historical details for dramatic effort, it boldly portrays a Nazi as a complex hero. Not rated, 134 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Micmacs (###) Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie), the French master of whimsy, renders this fast-moving pastiche about a man (Dany Boon) accidentally shot and then left with a bullet in his head. He becomes homeless and befriends a group of other similar downtrodden yet colorful eccentrics. Together, they ingeniously plot the

Knight and Day
‘Knight and Day,’ you are not the one for moviegoers
Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. Now in theaters.
Knight and Day is the quintessential summer movie: It stars two beautiful people; is fast, furious and loud; and it is totally ridiculous. A pre-screening removal of your brain will be required before viewing Knight and Day because anyone who stops and thinks for a second about what is on screen will suffer dizziness and an occasional blackout. The screenplay by Patrick O’Neill only encourages the directorial excesses of James Mangold, who never confronts a scene that he cannot make
more outrageous. Once beyond this swelled emptiness, if possible, Knight and Day stays consistently entertaining, with its endless car chases, airplane crashes, bombing attacks and various other forms of cinematic mayhem aided by excessive computer-generated effects. In addition, the Knight of the title, Tom Cruise, wipes out a series of bad guys, whether in an airplane, train, across the roofs of Vienna, or just about anywhere else on the globe Mangold can thrust him. Cruise may garner most of the action sequences, but it is his co-star, Cameron Diaz, who ingratiates herself with viewers as June Havens, a befuddled woman who is whisked off an airplane by Roy Miller (Cruise),
né Knight, after he has killed everyone on board. June then suffers through a series of ups and downs as Roy tells her he’s the good guy, while constantly claiming that everyone shooting at them — including the CIA and the FBI — are the bad guys. Supposedly, Roy Miller holds the Zephyr, the film’s MacGuffin wanted by everyone. It’s an energy source the size of a battery, invented by an eccentric young scientist (Paul Dano). During the chases, Miller and Havens develop a delicate balance of sexual tension, but not enough to detract from the senseless action. Both during these nearromantic episodes and the action sequences, Diaz sparkles, showing her engaging
bringing down of two arms manufacturers. It may sound heavy and ominous, but it is filled with typically Jeunet-esque inventions, characters and playfulness. Rated R, 105 minutes. At the Magnolia and Angelika Plano. — Boo Allen Winter’s Bone (####) Deep in the Ozarks of southern Missouri, 17year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer
Lawrence), goes looking for her father, a convicted meth cook and dealer who put their homestead up for bond. If he does not surface within the week, Ree and her extended family will be evicted. Writer-director Debra Granik adapts this brilliant, beautiful, yet chilling tale of discovery from Daniel Woodrell’s novel, creating consistent, white-knuckle sus-
pense throughout the film. Rated R, 100 minutes. At the Magnolia and the Angelika Plano. — B.A.

knack for comedy while retaining her allure. Cruise acquits himself almost equally as well, jumping naturally into his action persona. Miller performs impossible, high-flying acts everywhere, barely being scraped before jumping up to face his next adversary. Mangold uses these slim plot points to orchestrate the series of showdowns. They become repetitious, but even from the start, they are outrageously unbelievable. BOO ALLEN is an awardwinning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

The lyrics on the first of two volumes of Alphabet Girls are by turns droll, absurd and achingly funny. Slavens will perform at his album release party Saturday night at Dan’s Silverleaf.
J.
Exhibit A: “Abigail”
The first track on the album is a vignette of a cad who cycles through women with the ease of a playboy. Then he meets Abigail, the first sweet thing we meet. “I think of the song as this pompous guy who could probably have any girl he wants, but he’s met Abigail and he actually likes her. So he’s doing all these things to try to get her interested and, finally, he finds out that she doesn’t want to go to the movies or go on a date. She pretty much just wants to skip all of that and go someplace and just make out. He’s pretty happy about it.” The song is a short dialogue. Take me on a moonlight walk, maybe in the park We could find a quiet place and suck face … in the dark Abigail, Abigail, are you sayin’ that you’d like to kissy-poo? Abigail, Abigail, I had no idea that’s what you wanted to do That’s one helluva suggestion. Kissin’ should never be out of the question. See SLAVENS on 10

Slavens Exhibit C: “Clara” The third track on the album sounds as if Slavens’ has been writing it for years. “It’s like a guy who’s thinking about a woman he hasn’t talked to in a while. He’s at that point where you figure there’s no sense in having any regrets, but he’s had a dream that they were together and he’s wondering what might have been. It’s the song that comes closest to being maudlin to me,” he said. Clara, oh Clara, you’re scarred on my heart Right where I carved your name in Clara, oh Clara, where would we be now if I had been a stronger or a weaker man But what’s the use? What’s done is done And there’s no guarantee that we wouldn’t have just have hurt each other more When Slavens was making regular appearances at Dan’s, challenging patrons to suggest song titles or themes, fans got used to the rare clarity and biting humor the artist could come up with just shooting off the cuff. The album serves up 14 tracks about women — women with old-fashioned names, including Daisy, Naomi and Freda. Alphabet Girls came about by serendipity. Slavens, who takes on the moniker Pslavens on this project, said the album has its roots in the era that birthed jazz — think ragtime. “Where a lot of the album is coming from is that Tin Pan Alley, early 20th century,” he said. “I was trying to learn stride piano, you know? That’s where your left hand is just going crazy. It’s really hard. When I was doing this, I wrote these exercises. I think of it like Thelonious Monk, on his recording Alone, he’s playing these different Tin Pan Alley songs, but he’s turning them into high art. I did what the other guys did. I supplied the tunes that guys like Thelonious Monk turned into art.” Slavens said he wrote “Bernice” 10 years ago with the band he’s probably best known
“You’re trying to inject humor without silliness. ... You have to be really careful with humor. You run the risk of turning people off. Humor is really subjective. What will make one guy roll around on the ground will make another guy pull out a gun.” — J. Paul Slavens

for, Ten Hands. The piece was on one of the band’s albums. He wrote “Clara” and “Daisy” around that time and “Abigail” came years later. “That’s when I realized I had A, B, C and D,” he said. “That’s when I thought I could do a song using a woman’s name that starts with each letter of the alphabet. I wrote ‘Naomi’ in the studio.” Alphabet Girls, Volume 1 ends with a hidden track, “Naomi,” and Slavens plans to record the second half of the alphabet, Volume 2, in the future. Slavens grew up as the only boy among sisters. Alphabet Girls reflects bits of the show tunes and classical music that surrounded him.
With lyrics that charm, surprise and induce snickers, Slavens’ music also surprises. “Irene” put Slavens’ keyboards playing the melody line along with Denton saxophonist Jeffrey Barnes’ as the double bass trips, skips and whips the principles around for good measure. In “Hazel,” a gem of a tune about two barflies falling in love, and all over themselves, Slavens’ accompaniment is the stuff of musical theater. It recreates a scene in which the music develops the characters while moving them along to a terminal spot in the story. And then there’s “Janice,” a number that’s more Gershwin, with lots of poppy hooks and a cello that almost surely stares at a full moon. Slavens said he’s a fan of Cole Porter and his habit of hiding darkness within light. “You’re trying to inject humor without silliness. You want it to have sentimentality without being maudlin,” Slavens said. “You have to be really careful with humor. You run the risk of turning people off. Humor is really subjective. What will make one guy roll around on the ground will make another guy pull out a gun. And unfortunately, the
first track on the album is probably the most humorous on the album.” Then there’s his voice, which isn’t the same from song to song. Sometimes, he’s reminiscent of Dr. John or Jimmy Durante-cum-Louie Armstrong. Other times, he has a boyish sound. Before the album is finished, he’s crooned a measure or two. “Yeah, my voice. Yeah. It’s something that happened — probably to my detriment,” he said. “For some reason — I don’t know why — I never determined my voice, you know? It’s this question: What does my voice — my voice — sound like?” Alphabet Girls doesn’t drop an anchor on a particular theme. Slavens is singing stories about women — loved and lost, bad and good. There’s no secret thesis about these women, or women in general. The cover art is sort of a collage of historical photos of women, and the album itself is like a scrapbook soundtrack. “I’m assuming that I’ll sell better online,” Slavens said. “It’s like everything else I do. It’s all over the place. If I’d pick one thing and just do it, it’d be great. But I’m all over the place, and that’s hard to sell.” Now that Slavens has 14 plums from his dalliance with Tin Pan Alley tunes, has he mastered the stride piano? “No. I would call myself a competent beginner,” he said. Slavens insists he has the rest of his Alphabet Girls waiting for their turn on a record. When he’ll take them for a date in the studio is the question. “Oh, I’ve got the other half. I don’t know when I’ll do it. It took me, what, 15 to 20 years to do the first one. But the others are there. This is an idea I can see through.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. MOVIES Continued from Page 8 a duplicitous CIA agent. Joe Carnahan directs in his usual chaotic style. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — B.A. Get Him to the Greek (##) Spinoff of sorts from Forgetting Sarah Marshall has Russell Brand reprising his role as Aldous Snow, a washedup British rock star living a life dominated by sex, drugs and tabloids. When an ambitious music executive (Jonah Hill) tries to escort the impetuous Snow to Los Angeles for a comeback show, it leads to a wild adventure. The film generates plenty of vulgar laughs, mostly from random one-liners and a slew of great cameos. Yet the reliance on uninspired drug gags and lack of realworld plausibility take over. Rated R, 109 minutes. — T.J. Iron Man 2 (##1/2) Robert Downey Jr. returns as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man, and he again faces off against those who doubt his love of country and his ability to defend it. A few new villains appear, mainly Mickey Rourke as a mad Russian scientist and Sam Rockwell as a scheming competitor. Jon Favreau again directs, and it looks like more of the same, with few additional effects or breakthrough surprises. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A. Jonah Hex A disfigured bounty hunter (Josh Brolin) battles a villain aiming to unleash hell on Earth. With Megan Fox and John Malkovich. Rated PG-13, 81 minutes. — AP The Karate Kid (###) A remake of the 1984 film might seem unnecessary, but at least this version changes some of the details, following a 12-year-old from Detroit (Jaden Smith) who moves to Beijing with his mother (Taraji P. Henson), where he gets beaten up by a bigger kid at his school, so he seeks advice from a wise but reclusive handyman (Jackie Chan). While the direction needs more discipline, the backdrops are scenic, and Smith and Chan generate a convincing student-teacher chemistry. Rated PG, 140 minutes. — T.J. Marmaduke (#1/2) Ill-conceived liveaction adaptation of the comic strip about a slobbering Great Dane (voiced by Owen Wilson) moving with his human family from Kansas to Orange County, where he encounters a host of insecurities when trying to fit in with fellow canines at the local dog park. It essentially turns into The O.C. with dogs, and what that has to do with the comic strip, I don’t know. But the humor is of the lowbrow and slapstick variety. Rated PG, 87 minutes. — T.J. Toy Story 3 (####) Eleven years after the first sequel to Toy Story, this 3-D installment is a hilarious and exciting mix of fresh and familiar aimed at fans of the first two films. The clever story follows Woody, Buzz and the gang of resourceful toys as they must escape from a day care center to return to their rightful owner Andy, now a teenager headed off to college. It’s a visual and narrative treat that again allows the Pixar team (and an all-star voice cast) to let its imagination run wild. Rated G, 102 minutes. — T.J.
