DENTON Trails of Cross Timbers Park

Regarded as the historic college town of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Denton is a local hotspot for music, art, and a unique atmosphere. This charming reputation sometimes overshadows the city’s appeal for outdoor recreation, and area residents may be surprised to also discover Denton as a scenic getaway. In addition to its neighborhood parks and playgrounds, Denton offers major trails and special-interest parks.

On the north end of Denton, visitors can enjoy open scenery while visiting Denton’s water park or free, fully equipped skate park. Water Works Park features giant slides and a continuousflowing river, but the park’s amount of green space is not so typical. Along with the fact that coolers and outside food are allowed, guests often take advantage of the park’s calm, grassy areas by setting up for the day and picnicking. Area residents may also take pleasure in Denton’s more unique facilities. Located in Lake Forest Park, Wiggly Field Dog Park provides dog stations, both human and pet drinking fountains, and fenced areas to separate large and small dogs. Across town, hobbyists and athletes can advantage from a variety of facilities such as a batting range, a golf practice center, a disc golf course, and a radio-control aircraft runway.

Online users can discover Denton’s parks and trails by visiting the “Parks and Trails” page on the City of Denton Parks and Recreation website, www.dentonparks.com. The site gives the option to explore with an interactive map or browse through the parks and trails listing. Each park page features photos, directions, and a list of the park’s amenities.

Interactive map at www.dentonparks.com

The Denton Parks and Recreation Department also utilizes the city’s extensive facilities by offering “enriching” programs, including annual fun runs, free movies in the park, and a community fishing program. Through the department’s outdoor recreational program, area residents can even explore Denton’s creeks and trails with skilled staff and knowledgeable volunteers. The program allows participants to kayak, canoe, hike, and geocache without having previous experience or their own equipment. Additional information on activities and programs is also available at the department’s website.

Denton County Transportation Authority

A-train service is here and ready to ride It’s here! The long awaited Atrain debuts from downtown Denton south into Dallas and back to offer an alternative way to get from home to work and back or to enjoy an outing, visit friends, attend an event and more. In the works for almost 10 years when the vision started forming under the guidance of Charles Emery and, soon, the Denton County Transportation Authority, the A-train is now a reality some eight years after receiving voter approval in September 2003. Riding the A-train serves as an alternative to interstate travel in a corridor packed as more people move into the region. Travel from downtown Denton to Trinity Mills will be 37 min-

you can ride the A-train to and from Denton and Lewisville. For $10 per day or $50 per week, a regional pass provides complete access to bus and rail service on DCTA, DART, TRE and The T (except paratransit services). Debuting with former Trinity Express cars, the A-train soon will have its own look with the Stadler vehicles are finished, complete with places to store bicycles for those who choose not to park and ride at any of the five DCTA stations — two in Denton and three in Lewisville. elcome to the future. Sure there aren’t any flying cars, teleporters and TV signals beamed directly into the brain, but there is the A-train. The A-train is the Denton County Transportation Authority’s answer to I-35E, a travel necessity and yet frequent annoyance to drivers, passengers, residents, businesses and everyone else with an interest in I-35E in Denton County. There’s something in the air. No, not just the sound of the train horn as the mighty DCTA rail fleet starts rolling on the tracks, it’s excitement at this new travel option. Don’t think I am just some hired hand here to write a happy note about the train without experiencing it for myself. Where you are, right now, reading this magazine, is where I was several weeks ago. I was finding out firsthand how the train experience will be.

A Train

The car you will be riding in on the outset of rail service are rail diesel cars manufactured Bj Lewis by Budd in the 1960s. They belonged to DART for a while but DCTA is using them until they get the new cars from Switzerland which are still under construction. The first of those will be delivered in late July, bringing several upgrades to the already great rail experience. The new fleet will feature level boarding where passengers can walk right on as opposed to having to step up in the current cars. Passengers will have an easier time maneuvering bikes, wheel chairs and strollers into the cars. There will be bike racks on those vehicles and greater See SPIN on Page 9

Spin people capacity. The cars will operate at a higher rate of speed, offering greater frequency between trips, more fuel efficiency and operate quieter through the neighborhoods. After taking a seat in one of the cars, and deciding to face forward, I prepared to take it all in. The seats were cushy, with plenty of distance between the rows to stretch my feet out under the seat in front of me. Mind you, I am a short guy, but rest assured you leggy people will have room to do the same. With a scream of the horn, the train set off in motion. There was a shiver to the car as it pulled off. The operator chimed in over the PA system welcoming riders to the train and giving out some warnings and sound safety advice when riding the rail. The cars sway a bit from left to right as it winds along the curves and straights from one station to the next. But honestly, side to side is better than forward and backward as you meander through bumper-to-

A Train

Make your home bumper traffic on I-35E. Riding the train, you get a good view of I-35 as well. Serves as a good reminder to you for making a better travel decision doesn’t it? And for those in traffic, they can look over and see the train and wonder why they didn’t hop on. Before you know it you’re at the next station, outfitted with trashcans, benches and placeholders for maps of the system and other pertinent information. After a brief stop, doors close, the operator chimes in about the next stop and off you go. It’s simple, carefree and here to help you help the North Texas region. That’s been the goal of DCTA, which formed in 2002 with the idea of making a dent in all that traffic congestion, enhance air quality and just life in general for Denton County residents. With a toot of the horn and chugalug of the mighty DCTA fleet up and down the rail corridor, we are well on our way. -Bj Lewis

A-train: Bikes part of plan By Rachel Mehlhaff Staff Writer

Denton Record-Chronicle/Barron Ludlum

Will Warrington says he is looking forward to new A-train.

Will Warrington decided to park his pickup and purchase an electric bicycle in February, using his tax refund. The only trouble with riding a bike while looking for a job is it limits your parameters. Warrington, who until recently was on the job hunt, was putting a lot of hope in the opening of the A-train—it would allow him to widen his search. Warrington recently landed a job at United Commercial Cast Stone in Denton, making his need for the A-train less crucial but he still plans to use it. “I’m sure the A-train will be handy in the future whether I’m looking for a job or going to a concert,” he said. During his job hunt,

Warrington was finding that many of the jobs he was qualified for were in Dallas but he was limited by his bike. He said his pickup still runs but it’s not very reliable—not to mention the rising cost of gas prices. Now the A-train will give him the opportunity to visit the Dallas Arboretum or take in a show or a concert in Dallas. His hope is that he will be able to take his bike, along with its 30-pound battery, on the train and ride it around in Dallas. The battery makes his bike weigh in at 85 pounds, he said. And Denton County Transportation Authority plans for the A-train to be bike friendSee BIKES on Page 14

Denton County Transportation Authority

New A-trains now in production The Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) and Stadler Bussnag AG, a Swiss company, have reached an agreement for the purchase of eleven GTW 2-6 Diesel Multiple Units (DMU) for use as the next generation rail fleet for DCTA’s 21-mile corridor from Denton to Carrollton. Vehicle construction will commence in September 2010 and the first vehicle is schedule to arrive in Lewisville in August 2011. The final vehicle is scheduled for delivery in April 2012. Testing will continue through August 2012 with “fleet transition” scheduled for September of 2012. Each GTW 2/6 can seat 96 passengers and has a total

capacity of 200. Luggage racks, bike racks and space for wheelchairs are provided. The vehicle is 70 percent low floor, meaning level boarding is provided. Though up to three vehicles may be run as a unit, DCTA plans to run two coupled vehicles. This is Stadler’s third contract in the United States and the largest in North America. The New Jersey Riverline and Austin’s Capital Metro also operate these vehicles. Stadler is known throughout the world as a provider of DMUs and other rail equipment. Founded in 1942, Stadler expanded to produce commuter rail vehicles, streetcars, rack railways, passenger coaches, locomotives and other rail related products.

The new Stadler units, as they are referred to by DCTA officials, are now in production with the first to arrive soon. The fleet will feature luggage and bike racks and easier boarding.

Bikes ly. There will be bike hooks available for people interested in taking their bikes on the train. When it comes to electric bicycles like Warrington’s or motorized bicycles, DCTA will allow it as long as it doesn’t take up addition room or slow down the boarding process, said Dee Leggett, vice president of communications and planning at DCTA. “It’s really about the

amount of space the bicycle would take up,” she said. DCTA wants to be as bike friendly as it can without impacting operation, she said. “Some of those things we would have to address on a case by case basis,” Leggett said.

Commuter Express in May and Connect in Lewisville in November. These actions fulfilled the bus components of the Authority’s Service Plan. In 2006, DCTA also began a fleet modernization effort which has included the addition of 17 low-floor Gilligs, 12 cutaways and several support vehicles. Another five Gilligs are currently on order with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the agency is purchasing six additional cutaways. Most recently, the agency restructured and expanded local fixed routes to better serve transit-supportive land uses, consolidated paratransit service areas and launched a pilot demandresponse program in Highland Village. The agency has also worked with the University of North Texas to create a nineroute university system that carries up to 15,000 passengers a day. DCTA has quickly established a physical presence in our communities with park and ride facilities, passenger amenities and the construction of a locally funded rail project and the Downtown Denton Transit Center. The Authority’s five-year capital plan also includes a Bus Operations & Maintenance Facility to accommodate anticipated growth in the transit services. The Authority’s aggressive approach to service implementation has resulted in an increase in transit ridership by over 60% since taking over city services in 2005. The agency’s ridership gains were recognized in 2008 by the Federal Transit Administration with the

DCTA is a Coordinated County Transportation Authority as defined in Chapter 460 of the Texas Transportation Code. Following a successful county-wide authorization election, DCTA was granted power to plan, develop, acquire, construct, own, operate, and maintain a public transportation system in Denton County. The powers and duties exercised by DCTA and the Board of Directors are impacted by numerous federal and state laws and regulations and are guided by the Authority’s vision, mission and core values. The legislation authorizing DCTA’s creation required that a Service Plan be developed by the Authority. The Service Plan was submitted to the voters of eight cities in Denton County on September 13, 2003, for consideration and approval of a onehalf percent sales and use tax. The election was successful in the cities of Denton, Highland and Lewisville. Village, Imposition of the sales and use tax, dedicated to the Authority for implementation of the Service Plan, began January 1, 2004. This Service Plan included a rail component and three layers of bus service, including interim regional commuter bus service, local fixed route bus service, and demand response service. In 2004, DCTA began work to fulfill the promises of the Service Plan by funding the existing bus operations which led to the acquisition of those operations in 2005. Also in 2005, DCTA launched a Bus and Paratransit Study which served as a tool in determining the level of bus and paratransit service needed in our service areas. In 2006, DCTA began two new services –

Denton offers several houses of history Sometimes the word “history” conjures up a yawn for people not naturally drawn to things of the past. Youngsters, especially, often harbor yearnings that history would stay in the classroom. They think dusty. Old. Boring. Wrong! Not so in Denton! The vibrancy of Denton’s downtown is tangible. The pulsing, creative life of almost 50,000 students between the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University keeps the area hopping 24/7. The Center for Visual Arts, the Hickory Street Arts Corridor, galleries, more than 20 live music venues, coffee houses, plus local fare to fit any palette beckon from original architecture. Entertainment, antiques,

eclectic shopping mix with upscale, urban living. And the whole energetic vibe winds among Denton County’s houses of history. The Courthouse-on-theSquare Museum sits in the heart of Denton, literally, as the crown in the middle of the square in the middle of the city. Built in 1896, the Courthouse has served Denton County continuously for more than 105 years. In fact, the County Commissioners Court still meets out justice from the ornate, second floor courtroom. But the entire first floor is dedicated to Denton County history. The museum offers exhibits, special collections, and historical documents providing visitors an overview of the commu-

Houses ways, imagining the heroes and leaders and, yes, even outlaws that have walked those same floors in the past. The Courthouse lawn is the living room of Denton, a gathering place throughout the year for families, couples, students, musicians – often everyone at once when the lawn plays host to festivals like Arts, Antiques & Autos in September and the Holiday Lighting Festival in December. Her clock tower beckons at night atop thousands of tiny white lights sparkling in stately pecan trees that, by day, offer shade and respite. The Denton County Courthouse is one of the most photographed courthouses in Texas. One visit and you’ll see why.

The Historical Park of Denton County, two blocks south of the Courthouse-on-theSquare, is an authentically historic Denton experience. Comprised now of the BaylessSelby House Museum, Denton County African American Museum, Elm Ridge Church, and a welcome center, the park will soon add a windmill, the Old No. 14 Fire House, and a 4hole outhouse (Seriously? Aren’t we glad someone invented bathroom stalls?). The Bayless-Selby House Museum takes visitors back in time to turn of the 20th century Denton, depicting Victorian era life for the well-to-do family in Denton County. The gorgeous home looks and feels as though its inhabitants just went out for a walk. The African American Museum, next door to the Bayless Selby House, tells a dif-

It showcases fascinating memorabilia from the 1800’s all the way to the present, including an old hose cart pulled by hand, items from a 1935 ladder truck, and antique gear. Photos and news stories of some of Denton’s most notable fires and the heroes that fought them line the walls above display cases full of accoutrements from breathing apparatus to fireman’s hats and helmets, to boots, jackets and protective gear. The Firefighters Museum and the Historical Park, separated by just a few walker-friendly blocks, will be indelibly linked once the Old No. 14 Fire House is added to the Park’s collection of Denton history. Visitors will see in person one of the trucks pictured in action at the Firefighters’ Museum. Denton Convention & Visitors Bureau

Artifacts in this museum allow visitors to experience daily life of Quakertown residents, their turmoil during a time of segregation, and the positive impacts of integration. The museum is housed in a restored home from historic Quakertown. Adding to the ambience of the Historical Park throughout the summer growing season is the Denton County Farmers Market. From the back of pickups and flatbed trailers lining Carroll Boulevard in front of the Historical Park, local farmers ply their homegrown produce every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 7 a.m. until everything is gone. Downtown Denton: A happening place In Denton, It’s Hip to be Square The Denton Convention & Visitors Bureau’s all new Hip-2B-Square brochure hit the streets in May with lots of exciting new content – content driven by new businesses clambering to be in the heart of Denton’s hip downtown district. Denton is special. The CVB team members know this perhaps better than anyone else, working as they do year-round to promote Denton, often rivaling for tourism business against cities similar to Denton in size and demographics. “The Denton product always outshines competitors when the contest comes down to “sense of place,” says Kim Phillips, CVB Vice President. “When clients

pit our Square against other Texas town squares, we win most of the time.” A testimony to this fact, Denton will host the Texas Main Street Managers Preservation Conference in June 2011, all of their conference activity centered downtown – the crowning triumphant edge that secured Denton as their host. Denton’s appeal is the fact that it’s real. No faux downtown copying Anywhere, USA. What Denton has is uniquely Denton’s – buildings and ambience. The result is a personality, a vibe that even casual observers pick up on quickly. The vibe is vibrant, a pulsing energy all day that doesn’t stop at night. After hours entertainment has become one of the biggest economic growth

Place nesses have been a magnet for diners and nightlife seekers for several years. Their pull is all the stronger now with the added action of their cross street: the daily-evolving Hickory Street development that includes loft-style living, cool restaurants like Weinberger’s Deli, Raman Republic, the newly opened Love Shack, and soon-to-open Mellow Mushroom. New pubs like the smoke-free Hickory Street Lounge and Cellar 22 add texture to the already-burstingwith-color fabric along Hickory Street and around the Square: Abbey Inn, Beth Marie’s, Loophole, Ruby’s Diner, J&J’s Pizza, Abbey Underground, Andy’s Bar, Hooligan’s, Vigne, The Labb, Banter, and on and

on and on. And the entire hip experience is anchored by our beautiful courthouse – one of the most photographed courthouses in all of Texas and keeper of our story in the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum. Yes, Denton’s downtown life is rich fabric indeed. And visitors are drawn to it, becoming just as enamored as do the locals. We have the real deal downtown which is why everyone is discovering that in Denton, it just is “Hip-2-BSquare. Hip-2-B-Square is available at the Denton Chamber of Commerce/Convention & Visitors Bureau lobby at 414 Parkway and is available for download at www.discoverden- Denton CVB ton.com.

Transit center in Denton The City of Denton and the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) broke ground in March on the Downtown Denton Transit Center and adjacent DCTA Downtown Station of the Atrain rail line through Denton County. During fiscal year 2004-05, Denton received $3.1 million in congressional funding from a priority project request it made to its congressional delegation. The request was for a Federal Transit Administration Grant that would allow for the development of a bus multimodal transit facility in Downtown Denton, now known as the Downtown Denton Transit Center. The project required a 20 percent match in local funds, which was be provided by

DCTA through an interlocal agreement with the City. The Transit Center at 604 E. Hickory St. consists of the adaptive reuse of an existing City of Denton facility that provides approximately 8,800 square feet of air-conditioned office and public meeting space. The eastern half of the facility will include general office space for DCTA bus operations staff and a joint use training and public meeting room. The remainder of the facility includes a public waiting area for transit passengers, a ticket office, ticket kiosk, restrooms and retail space to be finished out in the future by the private sector. The A-train will serve the Downtown Denton Transit See TRANSIT on Page 36

Transit Center with the rail platform just to the west of the facility. The 450-foot platform canopies, amenities and station icon were designed to complement the transit center and reflect the architectural features unique to Downtown Denton. The DCTA A-train passenger rail system will connect Denton County with the DART system and the rest of the North Texas region, creating an economic development mechanism for Denton County and the region as a whole. The A-train project, a central element of DCTA’s service plan, includes 21 miles of regional rail, five rail stations, an adjacent bicycle/pedestrian trail, and a regional rail operations and maintenance facility. Existing parking lot of the

Transit Center and A-train Station allows for approximately 60 parking spaces for transit patrons, DCTA employees, a passenger drop off area, and bike storage. The bus lane, bus shelters and the terminus of the Rail Trail Hike and Bike Corridor will be located along the western side of the parking lot and Transit Center. Additionally, the project includes a 45-foot clock tower and landscaped public plaza area at the intersection of Hickory Street and Railroad Avenue. The tower serves as a focal point for the transit center and was designed to serve as an outdoor performance venue for local musicians and artists, and to compliment the DCTA rail - City of Denton platform.
