University of North Texas students in a summer course created a colorful mural in the Art Building, with a tree showing the school as a place of growth, a footbridge illustrating students’ journey to the future, and swimming fish and half of a girl’s face.

Undergrads make murals in UNT summer course

ndergraduate art students at the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts & Design experimented with scale, texture and form in a summer school course in mural painting. UNT alumni Blayre Stiller and Giovanni Valderas taught

the course, which prepares students to meet the surging demand for public art — and private art that makes use of both the scale and impact normally associated with public art. The students painted two indoor murals, each one 37 feet

long and 10 feet tall. Murals have a history in guerrilla street art, in municipal art and in political propaganda art. The course teaches students how murals impact communities, and how communities influence art. For instance,

Denton saw a number of murals added to its landscape during this year’s 35 Denton music festival, with projects on East Hickory Street, the downtown arts corridor and near the UNT campus. “It’s like eye candy,” Valderas said of murals. “But it brings

attention to certain things and raises social awareness.” The murals are in the Lightwell Gallery on the first floor of the Art Building, one block west of Mulberry and Welch streets.

enton’s Voltrevolt makes a somewhat rare appearance in the lineup Friday night at Dan’s Silverleaf.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

The experimental indiefolk outfit shares the stage with Tony Ferraro’s project, Satans of Soft Rock, Michael Judge and Houston’s Mando Saenz. Voltrevolt released a 12track demo two years ago, showing off the band’s love of polemical and personal lyrics and its fondness for songwriting. Lead singer Matthew Long’s bleating vocals are carried along by Brit-rock-y, twanging guitars, spry drumming and tentative bass lines. “About the World” uses a campfire sing-along posture to pose grim questions about present-day humanity. A ukulele trails off from a swell of drum crashes and even a trumpet blast that gets all Gabriel-like, kind of warning us that the end is terribly freaking nigh. “The Limelight” features

older and youths 18 and younger. For reservations, call 972-221-7469. Visit www.glct.org.

Voltrevolt has a gig at Dan’s Silverleaf on Friday night. shoegaze/noise-rock guitar reverb behind anthemic vocals about releasing fears and facing demons before spinning off into an Iggy Pop-like tempo, bringing the whole thing to a hopeful end. “Icarus” is a more ambient affair, matching a marching beat to wavering guitar lines that would be just as at home on a concept album as a demo. Which brings us to the point. Voltrevolt had played maybe 10 shows when it boarded itself into the studio to make a record that is coherent and dynamic.

OPENING FRIDAY Neil Young Journeys (##1/2) Appreciation for this documentary from director Jonathan Demme may depend entirely on the viewer’s individual appreciation for the music of Neil Young. The director follows Young as he travels around his hometown of Omemee, Ontario, and then on into the big city of Toronto, where he gives a concert. Throughout the film are abundant clips of Young performing. Rated PG, 87 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen

NOW PLAYING The Amazing Spider-Man (###1/2) It's impossible to avoid the comparisons, so we may as well just get them out of the way early so we can move on. This reboot is pretty much different in every way from the staggeringly successful Marvel Comics-inspired trilogy that preceded it. Much of that has to do with the central performance from Andrew Garfield, who plays Peter Parker as a misunderstood outsider, a rebel with a chip on his shoulder. That slightly arrogant attitude gives the whole movie a restless, reckless energy. Emma Stone is bright as ever as Peter's love interest, Gwen Stacy, with Rhys Ifans nicely underplaying his role as Spider-Man's nemesis. Directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). Rated PG-13, 138 minutes. — The Associated Press Brave Disney and Pixar teamed up to create the Little Princess Who Wouldn’t — wouldn’t consider marriage her destiny, that is. Meet Princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), an expert archer known for her defiance and her explosion of screaming red curls. Neither pleases her father, King Fergus (voiced by the incomparable Billy Connolly), or her mum, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). While the queen is looking to land a good young man for her daughter, Merida is looking for a spell that will change her destiny. Rated PG, 93 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding Ice Age: Continental Drift (##1/2) There’s considerably less drift in the latest in a long line of lucrative cartoons from Blue Sky Studios and their friends at Fox. It’s all sight gags and action beats, which tends to cover the shortcomings these assembly-line farces are infamous for. Manny the mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano), Diego the sabertoothed tiger (Denis Leary), Sid the

sloth (John Leguizamo, always funny) and Sid’s Granny (Wanda Sykes) are adrift on an iceberg. That’s when they meet the pirates. Rated PG, 94 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune News Service Katy Perry: Part of Me (###) This is not a concert film (although there is ample performance footage). It is not a chronicle of this Candy Land Gaga’s life (although you do learn a great deal about her pre-fame years). Part of Me is pop star Katy Perry’s visually spectacular testimonial to her own indomitable determination to follow her dreams. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — Philadelphia Inquirer Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (##) Halfway into the third animated tale about New York City zoo animals on their overseas adventures, Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller) tells some circus friends they were “just going through the motions out there.” So, too, for Madagascar 3. The result: A cute story about zoo animals running off to join the circus becomes overwhelmed by a blur of color and animated acrobatics. Rated PG, 92 minutes. — AP Madea’s Witness Protection After being set up as the fall guy for a mob-backed Ponzi scheme, a mildmannered investment banker enters the federal witness protection program with his family and heads to the South. With Eugene Levy, Doris Roberts, Tom Arnold and Tyler Perry. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Magic Mike (###1/2) Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Ocean’s 11) makes movies about sexy subjects, then strips away the sexiness about them. Now he’s directed Magic Mike, about the cheesy world of male stripping in the cheesy setting of Tampa, Fla. Alex Pettyfer’s character, Adam, serves as our guide once the more established Mike (Channing Tatum) recruits him to be a dancer at the Club Xquisite male revue. With Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello. Rated R, 110 minutes. — AP Moonrise Kingdom (##) In the latest piece of whimsy from director Wes Anderson, two children become lost on an isolated island in 1965. The scout master (Edward Norton) and sheriff (Bruce Willis) join parents (Francis McDormand and Bill Murray) in the search. Children talk like adults, and adults talk in arch passages. Overly contrived characters and situations wear thin. Rated PG13, 94 minutes. — B.A. Safety Not Guaranteed (###1/2) With a low-budget intimacy, Colin Trevorrow’s feature directing debut begins life as an oddball road-trip comedy, then turns unexpectedly romantic before becoming a genuinely paranoid sci-fi thriller. The clever premise finds Seattle magazine intern Darius (Aubrey Plaza) and two of her co-workers (Jake Johnson and Karan Soni) traveling to find the person who placed an intriguing classified ad. “Wanted: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke,” it reads in part. They track down a loner grocery store clerk (Mark Duplass), then try to infiltrate his life and get to the bot-

Local Trekkies can suit up as their favorite characters for the tom of his bizarre story. Rated R, 85 minutes. — AP Savages (###1/2) Oliver Stone’s latest is a lurid, pulpy film noir with a sexy, sometimes dreamlike California beach vibe. Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson co-star as best friends and business partners Chon and Ben, who got rich quick growing a particularly strong strain of pot. Everything’s going great until the leader of a Mexican cartel (Salma Hayek) tries to expand her territory. With Blake Lively, John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro and Emile Hirsch. Rated R, 129 minutes. — AP Ted (###1/2) A teddy bear who smokes pot, parties with hookers, beds pop stars and spews profanity in a New England accent as thick as chowdah? Such a creature could only come from the blissfully twisted mind of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. That’s when Fathom joins CBS television to screen episodes 106 and 114 — “Where No One Has Gone Before” and “Datalore.” The episodes are among the most popular in the story of galactic travelers under the command of Capt. The event coincides with the Tuesday release of the series’ first season on Blu-ray. The episodes will be introduced by Star Trek experts and restoration consultants Mike and Denise Okuda. Fans who attend will be among the first to get a sneak peek of the new special features. Tickets for the event are available online at http:// bit.ly/MHJ7Ah. Warner Bros. Pictures

Christian Bale reprises his role as Batman in The Dark Knight Rises. Christopher Nolan directs this entry in the highly regarded franchise, but the script tries to cram in too much.

Failure to launch By Boo Allen Film Critic

By this time of summer, many of the big budget blockbusters start to look the same. And The Dark Knight Rises is no exception. This Dark Knight does not actually rise, but it also never completely falters either. It hovers in mediocre middle ground, never catching fire and actually becoming fun to watch. This slackness, noticeable in a movie nearing three hours, would previously seem impossible for a highly regarded franchise overseen by respected director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Batman

The Dark Knight Rises Rated PG-13, 164 minutes. Opens Friday.

Begins). In trying to narrow down what throws this latest Batman saga off course, a good place to begin would be with the main villain, Bane (insert political joke here), a nearly anonymous figure despite the retrofitted goalie mask he wears throughout. Unfortunately, this facial

adornment makes almost everything he says unintelligible, a disservice to Tom Hardy, the otherwise fine actor stuck behind the mask. The other main objection comes in the overwritten, overplotted script by Nolan and his brother Jonathan. They simply cram in too much, obscuring plot lines along with motivations, explanations and various character stories. Among several options, the plot itself centers mainly around a nuclear device that Bane and his seemingly massive army steal and then threaten to use to blow up New York — uh, Gotham. And of course this propels

This ‘Dark Knight’ has a lot in its favor, but it never manages to take off Batman (Christian Bale) to come out of his self-imposed funk and save the day in a succession of face-offs and battle sequences. Other crises faced by Batman and Police Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) focus on a device that wipes out identities, as well as a financial collapse triggered by Bane’s attack on Wall Street. In addition, some odd sort of Occupy movement’s activity seems to be taking place in the midst of the chaos. Marion Cotillard and Anne Hathaway inject some needed flavor by taking the gratuitous good and bad female roles, although which is which is left

open. As the unnamed Catwoman figure, Hathaway delivers some of the film’s few attempts at humor. The Dark Knight Rises takes a gritty approach, looking rougher and hazier than its glossy predecessor, even though both were photographed by Wally Pfister. Hans Zimmer supplies the non-stop pulsating musical score that threatens to drown out every scene. But the cast ranks as possibly the year’s best, with even the many minor roles taken by quality talent. Yet despite the expected overall high production values, the film never takes off.

Eisley content to settle down, finding space to create in East Texas and spot on smaller label By Rachel Watts For the Denton Record-Chronicle

I

t’s been years since Eisley played a show in Denton, so the close-knit indie-rock band from Tyler decided to tack on a gig here at the last minute. The band is finishing up a short, 12-date summer tour with a stop tonight at Rockin’ Rodeo — Eisley’s only Texas show of the summer tour. Singer and guitarist Sherri DuPree-Bemis says audiences can

expect to hear new material that band members — three sisters, their brother and a cousin — have been writing for their upcoming album, which they’re self-producing and recording for the first time in their hometown. “This record and the lyrics are a lot more like old-school Eisley, like the lyrics that we would have on Room Noises,” she said, referring to Eisley’s 2005 full-length debut. “Once again, that was before any producers were able to get a hold

“We can write songs from our hearts and not have to worry if this song is catchy enough or if it’s exactly three minutes long, and stuff like that.” — Sherri DuPree-Bemis, singer-guitarist of us, so it’s been cool just having the freedom to be more whimsical with the lyrics again and not be so straightforward.” After the band’s split with

Warner Bros. Records in 2010, the band’s members say they’re much happier having the creative freedom that is often suppressed with a major label.

Eisley is now signed to Equal Vision Records, an indie music label that trusts the band to do its own writing, producing and recording, DuPree-Bemis said. For the group, she said, it has been a long-awaited undertaking. “With our last few records, there was a lot of pressure from the big labels wanting songs that were going to be good for radio,” she said. “Not having that pressure has been really relaxing. We can write songs from our hearts and not have

to worry if this song is catchy enough or if it’s exactly three minutes long, and stuff like that.” She noted that the band’s previous label wanted them to go on tour with Hillary Duff — an offer they immediately declined. “We were clearly not a musical match. It’s just because we’re all girls,” DuPree-Bemis said. With a new label, a new way of recording and a revamped sense of direction, Eisley will release its new album in early 2013, although

an official release date will be difficult to determine — in part because two of the three sisters in Eisley are expecting babies. “It’s going to be a really busy end of this year and beginning of next year, but it’ll be OK,” DuPreeBemis said. “As soon as the babies are sturdy enough to put on the bandwagon, we’ll be back on the road again.” Although the band played Homegrown Music and Arts Festival in Dallas in late May, mem-

bers say they haven’t performed in Denton in years. They say they’re excited to end their tour tonight in the only Texas show on their route. “Anywhere in Texas feels like

we’re playing at home,” DuPreeBemis said. “Our whole family will be there [in Denton], so it will feel like being back home again.”
