hris Finley is the kind of guy who hears music where most of us don’t. Incidental sounds — the white noise of computer chimes, gaming music, and the clanks and braps of urban life — feed Finley’s menu of noise. When Finley performs as Kashioboy, those sounds are spooled together to make surprisingly tuneful stuff.

ON THE COVER INDEPENDENCE DAY

Chris Finley uses an arsenal of electronics to make his chiptune music. Catch the one-man act — on stage as Kashioboy — on Saturday night at Hailey’s Club.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

Kashioboy joins Name Droppers, Florene and Fur for “InDentonDance Day” Saturday at Hailey’s Club. Kashioboy makes chiptunes. For the uninitiated, that’s music composed and formatted to be synthesized in the moment by a computer or a video game console sound chip. Think of the classic, happy blurping Pac-Man music that serenaded you at the arcade — fuzzy, spunky notes that either cheer the gamer along or droop in wavy notes after a loss. It’s nostalgic and lightweight if you consider it on a note-bynote basis. When Kashioboy is at the head of the gear table, though, the chiptunes turn symphonic, and it doesn’t hurt that simple vocals carry emotional weight. Tuneful melodies are spliced together, pulled like taffy through an Auto-Tune-like program. We wonder: Is Kashioboy unsigned because he’s a plucky contrarian who likes to play with his gear and his collection of white noise without any meddling? Or maybe he’s waiting for some kind of break? Sounds like: the Servant will a digital handheld habit; a

can find much to love in Lovesick Mary’s tunes — which lean to the minor key side, or sound like they want to. The most radio-friendly of the bunch, “The Ooh Ooh Ooh Song,” keeps the tempo up and the chorus singable. Things shift more toward ballad territory with “Insomnia.” Lutz’s vocals are front and center over Jeter and Heffernan’s guitar and bass work, with Cummings’ drums on the driving side. Sounds like: the Motels’ Martha Davis left New Wave for a tryst with a classic rock disciple; a high school senior getting ready to junk her parttime gig and go road-tripping. OPENING FRIDAY Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky (##1/2) Igor Stravinsky (Mads Mikkelsen) meets Coco Chanel (Anna Mouglalis) in 1913 at the uproarious Paris debut of his shocking Le Sacre du Printemps. A few years later, when he suffers financial problems, the now successful businesswoman invites him and his family to stay at her mansion. They begin an affair that threatens both. But director Jan Kounen avoids the introspection and instead concentrates on the sexual. Two cold, selfish people defy being brought to life, thereby making the film somewhat disengaging. Rated R, 115 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Angelika Plano. — Boo Allen Cyrus (###) Slight but amusing character-driven romantic comedy about John (John C. Reilly), a divorcee who meets the impetuous Molly (Marisa Tomei) at a party. Then John meets Molly’s grown son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill), a musician with some jealousy issues, whose rivalry with John creates some priceless comic moments. But the cast, along with filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass (Baghead), add enough poignancy to smooth over the rough spots in the script. Rated R, 91 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Todd Jorgenson

NOW PLAYING The A-Team (##1/2) The 1980s TV series gets a loud, expensive, big screen adaptation with Liam Neeson heading a group accused of military malfeasance who break out of jail and seek revenge on those who put them there. Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson comprise the remaining team, with Jessica Biel as an officious army officer and Patrick Wilson a duplicitous C.I.A. agent. Joe Carnahan directs in his usual chaotic style. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — B.A. Grown Ups Childhood pals (Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and David Spade) reunite as adults. With Salma Hayek and Maria Bello. — The Associated Press Iron Man 2 (##1/2) Robert Downey Jr. returns as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man, and he again faces off against those who doubt

Noah Ringer plays Aang in the adventure film The Last Airbender, a disappointing remake of a popular animated series that aired on Nickelodeon.

‘Last’ gimmicks of Shyamalan Director abandons old tropes, takes up new ones t least M. Night Shyamalan is trying something new with The Last Airbender. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker, who has spent the past decade toying with supernatural gimmickry and twist endings to middling effect, has turned a page in his career. He’s now spearheading a children’s fantasy-adventure franchise. You can hardly blame the guy. He can see the dollar signs generated by Harry Potter, XMen and The Chronicles of Narnia, and he just wants a

piece of the pie. Shyamalan’s choice is a liveaction adaptation of the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, with a dazzling array of special effects lending some style to a muddled screenplay that certainly lacks substance. The film takes place in a world in which its four nomadic tribes (named after the elements of earth, fire, air and water) have been at conflict since a powerful, peacekeeping

avatar disappeared 100 years ago. When the avatar reemerges as a young boy named Aang (Noah Ringer), the Fire Nation is attempting to take over the world. It’s up to Aang and his two teenage sidekicks from the Water Nation to summon the courage to avenge the extinction of Aang’s kingdom and bring peace to the world. The Last Airbender puts its big budget on the screen with a visually imaginative combination of special effects and exotic landscapes, beautifully captured by Lord of the Rings cinematographer Andrew Lesnie. However, as with many of his previous films, the director lets himself down with a script that is too densely plotted for its target audience. A few characters come and go without explanation, and Shyamalan seems to

his love of country and his ability to defend it. A few new villains appear, mainly Mickey Rourke as a mad Russian scientist and Sam Rockwell as a scheming competitor. Jon Favreau again directs, and it looks like more of the same, with few additional effects or breakthrough sur-

prises. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A. The Karate Kid (###) A remake of the 1984 film might seem unnecessary, but at least this version changes some of the details, following a 12-year-old from Detroit (Jaden Smith) who moves to Beijing with his mother (Taraji P. Henson), where

he gets beaten up by a bigger kid at his school, so he seeks advice from a wise but reclusive handyman (Jackie Chan). It all leads up to a climactic kung fu tournament, of course. While the direction needs more discipline, the backdrops are scenic, and Smith and Chan generate a con-

take the subject matter too seriously when a lighter approach would be more appropriate. The screenplay gets sidetracked with tedious mumbojumbo about mythical creatures, powerful spirits and mysterious scrolls. Instead, the film could have used more excitement, especially given the potential of the element-bending fight sequences that are showcased only sporadically. Perhaps that is Shyamalan’s latest bait-and-switch: teasing his audience with an actionmovie setup then subtracting most of the real action. There’s always the sequel, or so he hopes.

eam Edward or Team Jacob? For anyone who has a ready answer to that question, the arrival of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is as welcome as a northwestern breeze in the middle of a heat wave. And they will most likely feel well rewarded by this respectful, unfussy installment of their beloved Twilight series, in which 17-year-old heroine Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) inches ever closer to becoming a vampire and joining her forbidden love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) forever. Of course, there are complications, not least among them Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), her childhood friend — oh, and part-time werewolf — who has a knack for showing up at inopportune moments. “Doesn’t he own a shirt?” Edward asks mockingly at one point. In Eclipse, Bella is also being pursued by the flame-haired Victoria (played by Bryce Dallas Howard), who is busy amassing an army of “newborn” vampires to wreak vengeance on Bella and the whole Cullen clan. But anyone interested in seeing Eclipse knows this already because, like the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films, the Twilight movies are designed not as movies that work as cinematic objects themselves, but rather as illustrations of books whose fans approach them with the

exegetical seriousness of sacred texts. As such, Eclipse succeeds with honor, if not

panache, moving the story along with economy and focused momentum. As Catherine Hardwicke did in the first Twilight, director David Slade pays close attention to mood and atmosphere, a sensitivity that last year’s New Moon grievously lacked. Still, for characters with such provocative complications, Bella and Edward are extraordinarily bland, especially chan-

neled by way of Stewart and Pattinson’s slurry, reticent delivery and resistance to making eye contact. Barely recognizable beneath pale makeup and brown contacts that give her a dilated, doll-like stare, Stewart registers emotion mostly by looking as if she’s just eaten a bad sandwich. Filmed mostly as a series of close-ups of people talking, with occasional flashbacks and

blurry, nearly incoherent action scenes, Eclipse will look fine on an iPhone, which for its teenage audience is probably all to the good. If Slade doesn’t necessarily advance the medium with this installment, he nonetheless advances the franchise, with enough lucidity and skill that he’s persuaded at least one erstwhile agnostic to take a stand. Team Jacob, all the way. Shirts are overrated.
