Summer’s rhythms
Penned amid Texas heat, Centro-matic’s ‘Candidate Waltz’ heavy on driving beats
Denton Time
W
ill Johnson said he doesn’t have a fun story behind the title of Centro-matic’s justreleased Candidate Waltz. “The title was a working title a little while,” the singerguitarist said. “I made a note, it was local election time and there was a whole ton of mudslinging going on. I remember rolling my eyes and thinking that, ‘Oh god, it’s time to do the candidate waltz.’ I didn’t actually mean for the title to necessarily end up being Candidate Waltz. But, yeah, it stuck. I wish I had a better story to go along with it.” Johnson said the Dentonbased band approached this album — the band’s 14th recording in 15 years — from a different starting point. In sum total, the recording hits you first as a mellow album, worthy of Sunday afternoons and road trips. Multiple sittings with Candidate Waltz reveal an intensity that smolders before it catches fire. Johnson said the record’s sonic duality was intentional. “We talked about those themes and approaches to the record,” he said. “We talked about some different overtones than we normally do. We put some new wrinkles in our brains. The idea of focusing more on groove, more on rhythm, and less layered overdubs was something we decided to explore. We wanted it to have more immediacy than our other records.” While the album and song titles might coach astute listeners to expect polemics, the record skips soapboxing for soul searching. “I guess, in ways, I suppose there are some lyrics that definitely have a certain sound or tone of indictment to them,” Johnson said. “There are some that have that little bit of inventory, and a not-alwaysglowing inventory at that, between some of the characters on the record. Inevitably, listeners will get something personal out of it that maybe I wasn’t intending, but that’s OK. That doesn’t bother me a

TURN IT UP
“They really germinated from a rhythmic standpoint. I knew almost from the beginning that the melodies would come later.”
Best bets for music this weekend
bit.” Every song on the album was written in a span of 15 days when Johnson was alone in Bastrop. If anything, Johnson said he hears “the heavy, heavy heat of that summer” in the record. He forced himself to write the songs using just a bass guitar. The songs were written out of rhythm, he said. There isn’t a stinker among the nine tracks. If you’re hoping for an album that wrings out your heart with three good songs and reliable filler, skip Candidate Waltz. Johnson and company manage to turn those rhythms into a richly textured album. “Shadow, Follow Me” evokes the feelings you might find on an early Juice Newton album (not one of her singles, either) or a late Johnny Cash record. There’s twang, but it isn’t manufactured. It’s the one song on the album that seems to relate most directly to Johnson’s solitude in Bastrop. The twang,
— Will Johnson, Centro-matic
though, fades in and out on the record. “Estimate x 3” could be a workshop in how to make an indelible hook, but then there’s that Centro-matic ethos again — this band just wants to give it to us straight, served up on authentic indie-folk. “Only in My Double Mind” shakes off any overly earnest posing Centro-matic could snag itself on. A sober beat and burning guitar phrases drive into a song about the delicious bite of ambivalence. “Calculate the troubled lines/only in my double mind/Foresee the history and then, follow through,” Johnson sings. “Quarantine
your demons, friend/Respectability, respect what is you/iron out your troubled lines/only in your double mind/Respect the history and love what is you.” You can nearly taste the regret and yearning of the long, drawn-out “oooohs.” It’s four minutes of steadily building bliss. The kind that hurts so good. “Solid State” eases up on the heart a bit, but still convicts. “They really germinated from a rhythmic standpoint,” Johnson said of the songs. “I knew almost from the beginning that the melodies would come later. There’s something primitive about just a note, hitting that note and just adding a voice. It pushes you in a new direction. It pushes you to that edge where things are uncer-
tain. That’s where all the good stuff happens, you know? Where you just don’t know what’s going to happen next.” Centro-matic performs to a sold-out crowd today at Dan’s Silverleaf. Sarah Jaffe opens. Where to get it: Candidate Waltz is available on iTunes and at www.centro-matic.com. Sounds like: A hot summer afternoon, or a night made for heart-to-hearts and catching lightning bugs. They’re with the band: Will Johnson, guitar and lead vocals; Matt Pence, drums, recording engineer and coordinator; Mark Hedman, bass and guitar; Scott Danbom, keyboards, bass, violin and vocals. — Lucinda Breeding

Texas is the reason Proof of state’s poetry in artist’s landscape pastels
F
rank Reaugh earned a brainy title after a life spent putting the ambling Texas landscape onto paper and canvas. Being known as “the dean of Texas artists” reeks of academic esteem, which was earned honestly by Reaugh. That a local exhibit of the artist’s work is a partnership between the University of North Texas and the Texas State Historical Association just carves another notch in the artist’s belt of intellectual cachet. What the honorary title doesn’t do is explain the artist’s torrid emotional affair with the state’s landscape. We who live here understand that Texas extracts a price from her residents: sweat, endurance and a certain appreciation for all that is seared by a punishing climate. A collection of Reaugh’s work opens at UNT on the Square today. Reaugh’s pastels — a gentle medium for such an exacting plot of earth — are visual sonnets to the state’s sun-dried dirt and indomitable dessert plateaus. With chalk and honesty, Reaugh recorded the swamp-bound trees of Texas, and the kaleidoscope of a sky. Tilt the sun this way, and Reaugh found a pattern of purpled clouds. Turn the sun another way, and an impossibly

OPENING FRIDAY Horrible Bosses (##1/2) An amusing premise doesn’t have much of a payoff in this low-brow comedy about three hard-working buddies who each hate their jobs because of their, you know, see title. So they devise a clumsy scheme to deliver a harsh comeuppance. There are a few big laughs, even if the script isn’t edgy enough and lacks any connection to reality. It coasts on the appeal of its stars (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day), as well as a slew of cameo appearances. Rated R, 97 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Turtle: The Incredible Journey (##) Incredible? Yes. Exciting? Not really. This 3-D documentary tracks the life of a female loggerhead turtle, from its birth beneath the sands of a Florida beach to its perilous transAtlantic journey that consumes decades, to its return as an adult to lay eggs. It’s insightful but generally dull, with some attempts by the filmmakers to heighten the drama between the turtle and its potential predators. Kids might find it slow, but at least there’s a conservation message. Rated G, 81 minutes. — T.J. The Ward (##) Horror pioneer John Carpenter returns after a 10-year hiatus with this low-budget ghost story, set in the 1960s, about four young women who are held against their will by an evil warden in a haunted psychiatric ward. Carpenter brings some gritty visual flair to some mediocre material, with a screenplay (which he did not write) that concentrates more on cheap thrills than genuine frights, especially in the predictable final act. Stars Amber Heard, Mamie Gummer and Jared Harris. Rated R, 88 minutes. — T.J.
NOW PLAYING Bad Teacher A foul-mouthed teacher (Cameron Diaz) ill-suited to her job begins plotting to secure her meal ticket. With Justin Timberlake, Lucy Punch and Jason Segel. Written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (Year One). Rated R, 89 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Bridesmaids (###) Broad but amusing Judd Apatow comedy from director Paul Feig (Unaccompanied Minors) about an impending wedding in which a neurotic maid of honor (Kristen Wiig) threatens her
Kevin James and Jackie Sandler share a scene with a talking gorilla in Zookeeper. Columbia Pictures/Sony
King of the jungle
James lets his inner animal loose as silly ‘Zookeeper’
By Boo Allen
James goes along with almost all recommendations, resulting in absurd scenes in which he falls down about a dozen times, knocks others down, mugs incessantly and shows a general willingness to do anything for a laugh. With such acquiescence, Coraci lets James loose at a wedding party, a car dealership, a fancy restaurant and other suitable locations for humiliation. The wildest, most farcical scene comes when Keyes takes Bernie the gorilla (Nick Nolte) out for a night on the town. The consistently broad humor should engage young ones, while making their parents smile between cringes.
Lasseter’s film is shiny, colorful and pretty, which should keep the young ones happy. Rated G, 106 minutes. — The Associated Press Green Lantern A cocky test pilot (Ryan Reynolds) imbued with super
he most alarming thing about the broad new comedy Zookeeper is not that Kevin James, the title protector, talks to the animals. No, that has been done so many times before in movies that Disney Studios should get royalties every time a critter opens its mouth. Instead, Zookeeper breaks new ground, sort of, when Griffin Keyes (James) seeks and finds advice about his love life from the animals. Then, more disarmingly, he goes out and does what they tell him. Reality must be a fleeting concept in any film with talking animals. But director Frank Coraci (The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy) takes the lossof-reality seriously and asks his
obviously willing star to abandon himself. Which he does. Working from a script from five male writers — conjuring up visions of a writing room that must have seemed zoo-like — Coraci integrates James’ comedic talents with those of an excellent voice cast so as to make everything seem almost plausible. In the hilarious opening scene, Keyes, resident zookeeper at Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo, is dumped by Stephanie (Leslie Bibb), his pretentious
girlfriend. Five years later, he goes about his daily chores with those he loves — the zoo animals. He also enjoys the company of fellow zoo employees Kate (Rosario Dawson) and snake-loving Venom (Ken Jeong). When Stephanie re-enters Keyes’ life with a seeming desire to reconnect, the animals break their code of silence and confront Keyes to offer advice about how best to win her back. The bears (Jon Favreau and Faizon Love) suggest growling and pawing the ground, the wolf (Bas Rutten) goes for territorymarking, the lions (Sylvester Stallone and Cher) can’t agree on a course, and, of course, the monkey (Adam Sandler) opts for throwing poop.
friendship with the bride (Maya Rudolph) because she can’t get along with her fellow bridesmaids. It’s too obnoxious and overlong at times, yet Wiig provides some big laughs in a breakthrough performance that headlines an appealing ensemble cast. Rated R, 125 minutes. — T.J.
Cars 2 (##) What has set the Pixar’s films apart from all the other animated fare is story: It’s paramount. Cars 2 tries to encompass many kinds of stories at once, none of which is terribly clever or compelling. There’s an international grand prix for Lightning McQueen (voiced
by Owen Wilson) to compete in, a spy spoof and a message about the importance of alternative fuel sources. And one of the biggest mistakes of all was placing Mater, the rusty, aw-shucks tow truck voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, front and center. Still, Pixar mastermind John

eld by zip ties, white bed sheets hang from bamboo poles. Every form of art from photographs to paintings hangs from the sheets by way of wire and clothespins. A stage made of wooden pallets and plywood, with a backdrop of red velvet cloth and Christmas lights, sits in a corner of the backyard. Although the heat of the Texas summer is beating down on the small yard, guests are happy — happy to be surrounded by friends, art and music. Welcome to the Bolivar Arts & Music Collective. The local collective gives Denton artists and musicians a chance to share their talents in a relaxed backyard atmosphere. But don’t let that discount the seriousness of the collective. “We try to promote our artists and
musicians to give them as much recognition as possible,” said collective cofounder Tony Letts. “We want to try and help to get their talents out there.”
Keep it simple The Bolivar Arts & Music Collective began in March when a group of friends built a backyard fort made of sheets and bamboo. “I wanted something that would bring artists together — something that was fun that we could do often that would give people a creative outlet,” said Trey Wright, another co-founder. “It’s gotten so much bigger than I ever imagined.” The group has presented a show each month, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Letts and Wright formed the collective with Jordon Jenson and Jamie
McGuiness. The monthly shows are simple, but require the organizers to plan and recruit talent. “We are looking into different venues and booking larger music acts,” Letts said about the project’s growth. “The artists are really getting involved and creating new work constantly to stay involved. “We just want this all to be a good time, and however it evolves, we will be happy to continue.”
Keep it affordable Artists who show work at the minifestivals pay a $10 fee at each show. Artists or vendors who hope to sell their work pay a $15 fee. The fee covers See BOLIVAR on 10

Bolivar drinks as well as any setup supplies. Guests who are of age can donate $6 for admission — the original cover charge started at $4 — in exchange for all-youcan-drink beer. At the end of the night, any profit that is made is given back to those who helped cover setup costs along the way. “It really doesn’t matter if you’re the best artist or not. If you want to show your work, or for your band to play, you can,” Jenson said. “I just want people to come out and see the collective for themselves. If you don’t, you’re really missing out.” The fourth collective show took place on June 4 at Wright and Letts’ home, with more than 20 artists and eight music acts. Art was on display throughout the day, while music started playing in the early afternoon hours. From the folk sounds of the Dandy Lions and Arielle LaGuette, to DJs, to punk rock played by Teasley Lane, there was music meant to satisfy most every taste.
“Bolivar is more down-to-earth and has a much more relaxed atmosphere than many of the other art shows I’ve been to …” — Greg Moran, Denton resident
Easy exposure “I think it’s safe to say that the collective is one of a kind,” LaGuette said. “I love playing shows in different bars and coffee shops around town, but they typically don’t draw a crowd as receptive as that of Bolivar’s. It’s an incredible experience to perform to an audience who shares your appreciation for the arts. The sense of camaraderie is definitely what sets it apart from any normal gig.” The people and the variety of music and art have helped the Bolivar Arts & Music Collective gain attention. “I enjoy Bolivar because of the atmosphere,” said Greg Moran, a Denton resident who
has attended all four of the collective’s events thus far. “Bolivar is more down-to-earth and has a much more relaxed atmosphere than many of the other art shows I’ve been to, which often come off as stuffy and highbrow.” Alex Scott, a Denton-area photographer who has displayed work at three of the events, commends the shows for bringing together a diverse group of people with many different talents. “I really think it’s a combination of things that make it,” Scott said. “The fact that people can pool their talents together and make something special for all to enjoy, that is something pretty rare.” Organizers hope that the next gathering will be the biggest and best yet. “We have received such a great response from so many people that are just excited that something like this is happening in their community,” McGuiness said. “We have had so many friends and strangers alike come up to us and offer their help in any way possible, so we can only hope that it will get bigger and better with each show.”

powers by a magical ring battles an intergalactic enemy. With Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong and Angela Bassett. Directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale). In 3-D. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — LAT The Hangover Part II (##) Much of the freshness and mischievous charm that made the original film successful is now lacking in this follow-up to the 2009 box office hit. The characters have been transported from Las Vegas to Bangkok for the wedding of dentist Stu (Ed Helms), who would rather steer clear of the bachelor-party shenanigans that got them into trouble in the first film. But once party buddy Phil (Bradley Cooper) and obnoxious loner Allen (Zach Galifianakis) enter the mix, an innocent night on the beach leads to the trio waking up with a host of disgusting problems and no memory of the previous night. With Mason Lee and Ken Jeong. Directed by Todd Phillips. Rated R, 102 minutes. — T.J. Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer (#) Too obnoxious even for kids with short attention spans, this

adaptation of the book series by Megan McDonald chronicles the adventures of an 8-year-old tomboy (Jordana Beatty) whose friends head to summer camp, leaving her with impetuous Aunt Opal (Heather Graham) as the final hope for an exciting vacation. The film’s frantic pace induces more headaches than laughs, and the character of Judy is off-putting for anyone over the target age. Rated PG, 91 minutes. — T.J. Kung Fu Panda 2 (###) Amusing 3-D sequel to the 2008 animated hit takes a smart approach by taking the characters from the original yet distancing itself with a separate story and tone. In this adventure, Po (voiced by Jack Black) and his kungfu friends are forced to confront a peacock (Gary Oldman) who is stealing metal to build an all-powerful weapon. The snappy animation and dazzling action sequences compensate for a script that might be too dark and introspective for kids. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — T.J. Larry Crowne (##) The considerable talent and charm of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts make their sentimental misfire all the more disappointing. Hanks directed and cowrote this cutesy romantic comedy about a man who looks to reinvent
his life after being laid off. He heads back to college, where he falls for a teacher trying to escape an empty marriage. It's all breezy and pleasant, and a mild relief amid a summer of retreads, but the characters lack chemistry and conviction. Rated PG13, 98 minutes. — T.J. Monte Carlo (##) Pop star Selena Gomez takes her turn in a mistakenidentity travelogue comedy aimed at teens, as she sees a chance to rescue her disastrous French vacation with friends after being confused by paparazzi for a spoiled heiress, allowing her to jet to Monte Carlo for a week of mischief and rich-girl pampering. Gomez’s fans will enjoy seeing her in a dual role, and the film itself has some mild laughs and pleasant scenery. It’s just so familiar and predictable from the get-go. Rated PG, 108 minutes. — T.J. Mr. Popper’s Penguins (##) Jim Carrey’s 20-year career comes full circle with this slapstick comedy: He’s back playing with the animals. Popper (Carrey) is a workaholic executive who’s forced to deal with a penguin that arrives as a gift from his late father, who was an explorer, while juggling his family and fledgling career. Driven by a complete lack of common sense in its main charac-
ter, the film creates an instant and irreparable disconnect with reality, yet still tries to convey a sappy message about spending time with family. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — T.J. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (##) Johnny Depp returns as Jack Sparrow in the fourth installment of the popular Pirates franchise. Penelope Cruz plays a former Sparrow love who joins him and her father, Bluebeard (Ian McShane), in a quest for the Fountain of Youth. Rob Marshall (Chicago) directed the pedestrian script but fails to add energy or find much of new interest. Rated PG-13, 141 minutes. — Boo Allen Super 8 (####) A group of six young filmmakers in a small town in 1979 accidentally film a trainwreck that unleashes an unexplained force. Director J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Lost) pays homage to his sci-fi predecessors, with E.T. the most obvious. Involving story, with warmth, humor and excellent special effects. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — B.A. Thor (##1/2) In this Marvel comic adaptation, Anthony Hopkins plays Odin, leader of other-worldly Asgard. He exiles his son Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to Earth, where he becomes the requisite fish-out-of-

A team of scientists (Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgard, Kat Dennings) helps him him return home. Big, brassy and loud rendering by director Kenneth Branagh. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — B.A. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (##1/2) Director Michael Bay delivers more of the same in the ongoing saga of the battle between the good Autobots and the bad Decepticons. Shia LaBeouf again plays save-theday Sam Witwicky, and newby Rosie Huntington-Whiteley plays the obligatory arm candy. Ehren Kruger’s script allows for multiple battles and face-offs, all while rewriting history with a smile. Rated PG-13, 154 minutes. — B.A. X-Men: First Class (###) According to this X-Men prequel that begins in the 1940s and continues up to the 1960s, the Cuban Missile Crisis was simply a battle between two warring mutant factions. Director Matthew Vaughn complements the story’s silliness with some clever special effects and outsized production values. The excellent top-to-bottom cast helps smooth over rough patches, including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and as the bad guy, Kevin Bacon. Rated PG13, 132 minutes. — B.A.
