ustin-based guitar god Monte Montgomery will perform tonight with his full band at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Montgomery — hailed as one of the top 50 all-time greatest guitar players by Guitar Player magazine — stretches beyond his instrumental prowess to write soulful music, sung with equal passion. Remarkably, his virtuoso acoustic-electric guitar playing is only secondary to the music itself, but when he takes off on a riff, he leaves mere mortals in jaw-dropping amazement. Montgomery crosses the fine lines between Americana, blues, rock, roots, jazz and pop to create what is arguably some of the best music to come out of the state. This is North Texas fans’ chance to hear Montgomery still smoking from his appearance at the Montreal Jazz Festival in Canada four days ago. Tickets are $15 at the door. The show starts at 9 p.m.

Reckless rambling through Denton Roots-rock band Reckless Kelly is performing tonight at Rockin’ Rodeo, 1009 Ave. C. The Austin-based band is on the road around Texas and its neighboring states, promoting its latest release, Somewhere in Time. The album is an homage to Idaho songwriter Pinto Bennett, mentor and family friend to frontman Willy Braun (on vocals and acoustic and electric guitars) and Cody Braun (on vocals, fiddle, mandolin and harmonica). The brothers are joined by lead guitarist David Abeyta, drummer Jay Nazz and bass player Chris Schelske. Reckless Kelly’s 2008 re-

enton teacher Randy L. Schmidt turned a few decades of fandom into a biography in Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter. The Pecan Creek Elementary School teacher had previously published a collection of essays, interviews, articles and reviews about the 1970s duo, but for this book, he delved deeply into the singer’s life. Schmidt will sign copies of his book, which came out a week ago, on Saturday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Denton. Karen Carpenter was one

OPENING FRIDAY Despicable Me (###) Crisply animated CGI comedy about an insecure supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell) who wants to be renowned for his evil deeds, yet discovers it’s easier to walk the straight and narrow when his heart is melted by three little girls he adopts as part of a sinister plan to steal the moon and upstage an evil rival. The hip voice cast and quirky periphery characters are a plus, and while the film takes a while to find its footing, there are plenty of solid laughs to be had as long as you don’t walk in expecting the next Pixar extravaganza. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Predators (#1/2) Adrien Brody continues his unfortunate string of post-Oscar career choices with this reworking of the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi thriller about a group of mercenaries who are dropped into a remote jungle, where they are left to fight for survival against vicious alien beasts. As with the 1987 original, it sounds like a better concept for a video game than a film, but this is like watching someone else play. Shot in Austin with subpar visual effects, the result is more tedious than suspenseful. Directed by Nimrod Antal (Vacancy). With Topher Grace. Rated R, 107 minutes. — T.J. Women Without Men (###) Visually striking but narratively flat adaptation of a novel by Shahrnush Parsipur that intertwines the stories of four Iranian women in 1953, against the backdrop of political turmoil that included a military overthrow of the government. Writerdirector Shirin Neshat creates some stunning imagery on a limited budget, and the performances help add weight to a film that would have been more provocative if its script wasn’t so mechanical and the dialogue so stilted. ‘Fire’ crackles with suspense Swedish thriller defined by tiny but fierce heroine About halfway through The Girl Who Played With Fire, the second film based on novelist Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millennium trilogy, a Stockholm detective questions why Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) is so hard to find. Lisbeth’s friend and accomplice from the first film — and novel — of the trilogy, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), replies that finding Lisbeth is difficult “because she is a very private person.” This Grand Canyon-size understatement defines the title character, a fiercely independent young woman, tiny yet

strong, and now harboring grudges against a lineup of fascinating new villains. In this sequel, Lisbeth reveals enough of her past to explain her rage and why she possesses a fierce sense of survival. When Larsson died suddenly in 2004, before his novels were published, he had no idea he had created in Lisbeth such a compelling female character. She burns up the screen, making every scene tense and filled with peril. When The Girl Who Played With Fire begins, Lisbeth resides anonymously yet in luxury from the bounty she harvested in the previous film. She has not contacted or seen Blomkvist in over a year, although he has reached out to her. She quietly returns to Stockholm only to find herself framed for several murders. At the same time, Blomkvist and his journalistic cohorts put

the finishing touches on an exposé about human trafficking in Eastern Europe. When two involved young people are killed and Lisbeth framed, Blomkvist begins his investigation. Also, Lisbeth begins her quest for exoneration and, inevitably, the two pursuits cross. From there, director Daniel Alfredson, from Jonas Frykberg’s screenplay, follows separate paths for his two protagonists, who never share a scene until late in the film. This separation robs the film of the engaging friction generated by two dissimilar types who must rely on one another. But the contrived fissure does not rob the film of its tension, suspense or effectiveness, as Lisbeth and Blomkvist separately encounter gripping confrontations that end bloodily and violently. At one point, Lisbeth meets a

brute about four times her size. She shocks him with a stun gun, shoots him in the foot with his own weapon, and then steals his motorcycle. Lisbeth has not gone soft since The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and neither has this gritty franchise. She suffers some things so horrid that it becomes questionable as to whether she might be able to return for the trilogy’s climax, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, which opens nationwide in October.

changes some of the details, following a 12-year-old from Detroit (Jaden Smith) who moves to Beijing with his mother (Taraji P. Henson), where he gets beaten up by a bigger kid at his school, so he seeks advice from a wise but reclusive handyman (Jackie Chan). It all leads up to a climactic kung fu tournament, of course. Rated PG, 140 minutes. — T.J. Knight and Day (##1/2) Tom Cruise

and Cameron Diaz star as a pair of would-be, thrown-together lovers who spend the movie fleeing from a bunch of either good guys or bad guys. Director James Mangold keeps the action rapidly moving along, almost fast enough to overlook the film’s total unbelievability. Rated PG13, 102 minutes. — B.A. The Last Airbender (##) Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has

adapted a popular children’s anime series with a dazzling array of special effects. It’s up to a boy named Aang (Noah Ringer) and his two sidekicks to avenge the extinction of his kingdom and bring peace to the world. As with many of his previous films, Shyamalan seems to take his subject matter too seriously, and the screenplay gets sidetracked with tedious mumbo-jumbo. Rated PG, 103 min-

utes. — T.J. Toy Story 3 (####) Eleven years after the first sequel to Toy Story, this 3-D installment is a hilarious and exciting mix of fresh and familiar aimed at fans of the first two films. The clever story follows Woody, Buzz and the gang of resourceful toys as they must escape from a day care center to return to their rightful owner. Rated G, 102 minutes. — T.J.

Cookie monster TWU students, Girl Scouts hope to inspire voracious hunger for reading By Rachel Mehlhaff Staff Writer

rimary colors along with oversized props, including crayons, a milk carton and a powder box, fill the Redbud Theater stage at Texas Woman’s University. The stage is set for the upcoming play adaptation of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, a children’s book by Laura Joffe Numeroff. But this summer, it is about more than simply offering a production. The TWU drama department, Girl Scout Troop 1032 and the Denton Barnes & Noble Booksellers are partnering to promote literacy. On Saturday, TWU will be showcas-

ing its upcoming production, and the local Girl Scout troop will be hosting an activity to promote literacy and earn badges. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is a story about the chaos that ensues after a little

boy gives a cookie to a mouse, who then requires a glass of milk and asks for a place to sleep, all the while wearing the boy out. TWU is staging the play as part of a new class called “Summer Stock,” in which the students work on a summer outreach program targeting children, said Cristin Thomas, the show’s director. Earlier in the summer, the students performed The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Before Mouse opens on the Redbud Theatre stage, the TWU students will present it in the mall commons of Golden Triangle Mall outside Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 2201 S. I-35E, as part of the bookstore’s story time.

Mallory Bryant-Gawne plays as Max and Cassie Henderson stars as the mouse in Texas Woman’s University’s summer production of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. The play opens on campus next week, but families can get a free taste of the play on Saturday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. Afterwards, the Girl Scouts will decorate donated cookies as an activity to go along with the showcase. Troop 1032, a group of Girl Scout Juniors and Cadets in fifth through eighth grade, is working on earning their Bronze Awards and Leadership Cadet Awards by conducting story times at Barnes & Noble. “This is their [leadership] project, reading and promoting literacy,” said Kirsty Robertson, a co-leader of the troop. Reading thought it would be a good partnership. He noted that each group is acting as role models for a younger group. Robertson said she was excited about the opportunity for the Girl Scouts to see women leading and volunteering. Thomas had worked with Anderson before and decided to approach him after TWU developed the new summer program aimed at reaching out to children and promoting literacy. “It’s a learning experience not only for the college itself but for the community, because it’s new,” Thomas said, pointing out that Denton doesn’t have a children’s theater where adults perform for children. The university is promoting literacy by choosing plays adapted from books. While not all the students in the TWU class will be performing, they are all involved in the

production in some sort of way, through such jobs as costume design or set construction. Thomas calls it a “service learning project.” One student, theater education major Mallory BryantGawne, is organizing activities to engage children before the performance.

“I think it is an excellent idea because it opens up children to the art of theater,” said BryantGawne, who plays the boy in Mouse. She said she received positive feedback from parents after The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, for which she also developed activities. “When we can involve children in any aspect of what we are doing, there is something positive being done,” Thomas said.
