TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

The 7-inch record features the latest batch of punk from Denton’s the Wee-Beasties, with a B-side by none other than Brave Combo. Each side holds two songs from each band.

If you’re scratching your head, wondering how the local punk rock provocateurs fronted by the audacious Richard Haskins made it onto the same slab of vinyl as the twotime Grammy-winning Denton polka band, founding Combo member Carl Finch can clear it up.

“A lot of people either don’t know it or don’t remember that when Brave Combo started out, we were a punk band,” Finch said.

The Combo-Beasties relationship started some years ago, when Haskins got out of the military and started the now-defunct Black Bottle Recording studio on Locust Street. The space he rented had a wall in common with Brave Combo’s office.

The talented misfits found one another, and soon enough, Haskins was recording Brave Combo’s 2008 release, The Exotic Rocking Life.

“That was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of my life,” Haskins said in a recent interview. “Carl Finch is an amazing musician and every member of the band is amazing.”

Haskins was worried he’d mess up the project. But he was amazed by Finch, whom he called “a task master.”

“I remember recording this one song and [former bass player] Ann Marie Harrop was playing,” Haskins said.

“Carl stopped her and said we needed to do it over, because she was something like a tenth

Don’t Shred on Me stocks its A-side with chest-thumping numbers that back Haskins’ trademark holler with precise brass blasts, wild drumming and guitar riffs that sweat

testosterone. Lyrically, Haskins muses his failed carnal pursuits, his unapologetic male gaze and energy you can slam a tequila shot to. The Beasties get bragging rights for nabbing former Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn to play on “Lauren in a Bathing Suit.”

The B-side is a menu of Brave Combo’s runaway polka.

“What Do You Want” is a plea for a return to consciousness, a racing request for people to wake up to the world around them. Forget the clarion combo call to “Do Something Different.” This song means to shake people into giving a rat’s proverbial rump about something, anything other than themselves. The Combo shuffles a bit in “Zombiefied,” another critique on the zonedout but hungry consumer.

Details: Brave Combo and the Wee-Beasties will have a record release party Saturday night at Hailey’s Club, 122 W. Mulberry St. Denton hip-hop outfit Fab Deuce opens, and local DJ Compatix will emcee.

The headliners perform late.

Doors open at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Cover costs $6 for ages 21 and older, $8 for anyone younger than 18.

efore Disney softened the intended blow of the stories of the Brothers Grimm, the tales were often dark, sometimes bloody and nearly always about danger.

Sundown Collaborative Theatre’s Cody Lucas takes a trip to the Grimm brothers’ world, when fairy tales were cautionary and characters aren’t always obviously good or bad.

In Lucas’ latest play this weekend, the Denton performer and artistic director of the theater group riffs on the neat little bow used to tie up the loose ends of life in fairy tales: Happily Ever After.

In the play, Jack (Lucas) is

trapped in a dream in which Jacob (Travis Stuebing) and Wilheim Grimm (Zane Harris) are psychotic ringleaders of a circus.

The company will perform the play at the New York City Fringe Festival next month. Its show makes use of music, dance and mime to create the dangerously tilted world of Jack’s dream. The story includes some famous storybook characters: Rapunzel (Tashina Richardson), Rumpel (Robert Linder), Prince (Nick Ross), Beauty (Olivia Emile) and Hansel (Aaron Sanchez).

Iceage cometh

he Danish lads of Iceage hit their notes and rhythms with a closed fist, musically speaking. The Copenhagen band make music that’s a mash-up of punk, Goth and post-punk (read: Patti Smith, the Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees). Made up of 18- and 19-year-olds, Iceage is already stumping an album, New Brigade. In songs like “White Rune,” Iceage makes ample use of metallic-sounding distortion and the bass drum’s tribal heft. It’s music ready-made for the mosh pit.

usician Andrew Justice had an itch to put a string quartet together just to play in public venues for the summer.

Justice, a violist and coordinator of the Denton Bach Players, said he got to know some musicians in his work at University of North Texas: violinists Veronika Vassileva and Reynaldo Patiño and cellist Eric Smith.

The quartet will perform the music of Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf and Louis Spohr, neither generally well-known as quartet composers.

“Both were famous virtuoso violinists in their time — Spohr perhaps more so — but they have become rather lost in today’s classic triptych of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven,” Justice said.

The two pieces are written so that the music for the first violin is more like a solo, even if the other instruments aren’t

relegated to accompaniment.

Justice said that when the composers are considered alongside Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, Spohr and von Dittersdorf carve out new harmonies and melodies — as well as bend the conventions a little.

“Basically, they are pleasantly surprising to us as performers, so we hope that the audience feels the same,” he said.

Donations will be accepted during the quartet’s set.

The characters have been transported from Las Vegas to Bangkok for the wedding of dentist Stu (Ed Helms), who would rather steer clear of the bachelor-party shenanigans that got them into trouble in the first film. But once party buddy Phil (Bradley Cooper) and obnoxious loner Allen (Zach Galifianakis) enter the mix, an innocent night on the beach leads to the trio waking up with a host of disgusting problems and no memory of the previous night. Horrible Bosses (##1/2) An amusing premise doesn’t have much of a payoff in this low-brow comedy about three hard-working buddies who each hate their jobs because of their, you know, see title. So they devise a clumsy scheme to deliver a harsh comeuppance. There are a few big laughs, even if the script isn’t edgy enough and lacks any connection to reality. It coasts on the appeal of its stars (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day), as well as a slew of cameo appearances. Rated R, 97 minutes. — T.J. Larry Crowne (##) The considerable talent and charm of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts makes their sentimental misfire all the more disappointing. Hanks directed and cowrote this cutesy romantic comedy about a man who looks to reinvent his life after being laid off. He heads back to college, where he falls for a teacher trying to escape an empty marriage. It’s all breezy and pleasant, and a mild relief amid a summer of retreads, but the characters lack chemistry and conviction. Rated PG13, 98 minutes. — T.J. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (##1/2) Director Michael Bay delivers more of the same in the ongoing saga of the battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Ehren Kruger’s script allows for multiple battles and face-offs, all while rewriting history with a smile.

Rated PG-13, 154 minutes. — B.A. Turtle: The Incredible Journey (##) Incredible? Yes. Exciting? Not really. This 3-D documentary tracks the life of a female loggerhead turtle, from its birth beneath the sands of a Florida beach to its perilous trans-Atlantic journey that consumes decades, to its return as an adult to lay eggs. It’s insightful but generally dull, with some attempts by the filmmakers to heighten the drama between the turtle and its potential predators.

arry Potter feels like a phenomenon. Some of the children who watched the first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, in 2001 are college graduates today. The blockbuster book series by English author and former welfare mum J.K. Rowling spawned one of the most popular movie franchises of all time. At midnight, Harry Potter fans experience the end of the series with the eighth installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

University of North Texas film professor Harry Benshoff had these thoughts to soothe the grief of the masses: Harry Potter won’t walk off into the British mist with his brood and Ginny Weasley. He’ll have more adventures, and maybe more movies.

“Like Frankenstein and Dracula, I don’t think it’ll stay dead,” Benshoff said. “And with the author getting ready to unveil this immersive experience [Pottermore.com], it shows no signs of ending with this movie.”

Benshoff said the Potter franchise feels like a hippogriff of a different color because of its immediacy and its sheer heft. Sure, Hollywood has built a theme park before, but Harry Potter has its own world on the Universal fairgrounds. Benshoff said filmmakers have been courting cult followings for about 80 years.

It started with film serials in the 1930s and 1940s.

Potter “This goes way back to the classical era in the ’30s,” Benshoff said. “When you talk about serial films, you’re usually referring to these short little chapter plays like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, where you’d go and watch these little 20-minute episodes.

They’d take 3.5 or 4 hours if you watched them all at once, but they were shown at the cinema every week.”

Filmmakers played on the audience’s investment in both characters and plot to get people into the movie house each week.

The filmmaking business shifted in the 1960s and ’70s, Benshoff said, with television shows like Planet of the Apes and Dark Shadows and beloved characters like James Bond and Captain Kirk — all predecessors to the kind of storytelling and character development Harry Potter employs.

“When you talk about James Bond, Harry Potter and Star Trek, you’re talking about a franchise,” Benshoff said. “It’s subject matter that crosses formats. The industry has books, movies, costumes, games and theme parks. It’s something that happens because of the structure of the industry. We call it horizontal integration.

The studios all have their movie and television divisions, their book divisions. It’s happening this way because of the way the industry structured itself.”

Benshoff said that Dark Shadows, a horror-style soap

opera that aired from 1966 to 1971, set the stage for the typical, hyper-merchandized film franchise of today.

“It was a TV show that had games, comic books and [action figures], and it was that show that really set the stage for this kind of franchising that’s been so popular since the 1990s.”

Benshoff said the horizontal integration model mushroomed with the success of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which saw lukewarm response as a movie in 1992 but met with greater success as a television series in 1997. When Buffy became a hit, studios saw a chance to drive moviegoers from the cinema to the video and gaming aisles, then to the costume shops, then to websites that invited fans to write their own adventures for their favorite characters.

When Harry Potter was born to readers in 1998, the game was afoot and there were galleons to be made.

Benshoff said the film series had some of the required ingredients for holding the attention of the movie going public.

“The James Bond movies aren’t building on the Bond universe anymore. They’re just another Bond film. They can stand on their own at this point,” Benshoff said. “In the Harry Potter series, each new movie expands the Harry Potter universe and furthers the mythology. With each new movie, you build on the back story, you learn new things about the characters.”

Then there are the relationships, he said, citing the assertions in Matt Hills’ book Fan Cultures.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 begins where the first part ended: at the crude graveside of Dobby the house elf, just one of many allies to Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) that have died in service of the young wizard.
