‘Mouse’ shows the way the cookie crumbles Consequences come into play in TWU kids’ series Young audiences can learn a thing or two about cause and effect at the Texas Woman’s University Redbud Theatre this weekend. In the final project of the TWU Children’s Theatre Summer Series, parents and children can see Laura Numeroff’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie come to life in a stage adaptation. The short play follows The

Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, staged earlier this summer by TWU’s summer series. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie follows a young boy as he puts his curiosity to the test and feeds a mouse a cookie. The gesture starts a chain reaction of everincreasing demands. The action takes place on a colorful, oversized set designed in conjunction with North Central Texas College. Graduate student Jennie Patton is the producer for the Children’s Theater Summer series. Cristin Thomas directs.

Performances are this weekend and July 23-24, with Friday performances at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and Saturday performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Redbud Theater Complex is on the northwest side of Hubbard Hall on TWU’s campus. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and children. Reservations are recommended. fter Sundown Collaborative Theatre cast a call for submissions for its second short-play festival on Craig’s List, scripts rolled in from Ohio, Virginia and even Australia. “We All Have Issues: A Mixtape” is the result. Sundown presents eight plays, ranging from five minutes to 20 minutes, at three alternative Denton spaces today through Saturday. Short-play festivals have become popular in Denton in the last several years. Texas Woman’s University has made an event of its Potluck Playfest, producing enthusiastic performers and technicians who like the idea of packing a story into the running time of your average commercial break. Cody Lucas, a founding director of Sundown Collaborative Theatre, directs a piece in “We All Have Issues.” The festival fits neatly into the company’s mission — to give untried material a chance and to bring theater technicians and actors into a laboratory where all have a hand in making a play. “We did it last year as a fundraiser,” Lucas said. “We had a lot of short original works, and we felt like they deserved to be seen. We also felt like they could be done cheaply.” Lucas said the festival sets performers and directors for a challenge: Ensembles get to use three portable blocks for their set, and can use only what they can find in the company’s costume and prop inventory. Lucas said short plays have something to offer audiences and players. For audiences, short plays get to the point fast. “It can tell a lot simpler story,” Lucas said. “What I really like about this festival is that everything can be stripped down and we can do eight shows in one night. People can see a lot of different plays in

one place, without having to drive to the theater.” For the player, a short-play festival is a creative buffet. “As an actor, having this opportunity to play all of these different roles doesn’t come around often,” Lucas said. “They’re getting a buckshot of different roles. It’s cool to get this many opportunities to do this many roles. As a director, it’s interesting to do this kind of work — a lot of these are broad comedies — where you get to strip away all of the superfluous theater you have in a regular show. It challenges you to decide what the play is all about and go with it. “It’s actually nice to have the restrictions, because you have to get creative.” Each play deals with personal struggles that make relationships a mixed bag of motives and conflicting agendas. Inner demons manifest themselves when they’re least welcome, often to funny results. — Lucinda Breeding

Evolving styles O so Closo fans hit Twitter and the Internet with plenty of grief when the band split with lead singer Adrian Hulet. The rest of the Denton group — Chris McQueen, Andy Rogers, Danny Garcia and Ryan Jacobi — reinvented themselves as Foe Destroyer just in time for the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival last spring.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

The musicians are fronting as a rock-freestyle-new wave band at the moment. The group isn’t streaming music on its MySpace page just yet, but the group is gigging, crafting a sound that is more urgent than the atmospheric rock they made as Oso Closo. Three of the guys are sharing lead vocals, too. Details: Foe Destroyer joins Denton acts Bronze Whaler and the Gypsy Bravado and Austin’s Opposite Day on Friday night at Hailey’s Club, 122 W. Mulberry St. Doors open at 9 p.m. Cover is $6 for ages 21 and older, $8 for those younger than 21. I Fans of the Asylum Street Spankers should turn their antennae toward a Denton act that has just as much stylistic pluck and confidence with tools that aren’t of the American Idol set. The Boxcar Bandits spin bluegrass and folk with spoons, the kazoo, a slide whistle and — we swear — a washboard, should the moment call for it. (And unlike the Spankers, the Bandits aren’t trying to race through the intricacies of an American folk form.) Here’s the thing: There’s something really fresh and, at turns, virtuosic about the Bandits. The group — which is made up of Rex Emerson, Ryan Williams, Grady Don Sandlin, Austin Smith and Hillary Early — lures you in with the bait of sheer novelty, and then keeps you around

ABOVE: The Boxcar Bandits play a hometown gig Monday at Dan’s Silverleaf. The group mixes indie attitude with free-wheeling bluegrass. Sometimes it’s sung tongue firmly in cheek, but the Bandits aren’t a novelty act. RIGHT: Foe Destroyer rose from the ashes of the popular Denton act Oso Closo. In the band’s new skin, the music is more urgent. Courtesy photos

The Heelers make music that plays comfortably on your rock playlist or at an altcountry music festival. with a certain authentic feeling. The Boxcar Bandits aren’t making fun of bluegrass. They’re having fun while honoring its charm and sport. Details: The band plays at 10 p.m. Monday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Cover is free. Ages 18 and older welcome. Sounds like: The cast of Hee Haw went to college and sneaked a snort or two from a hip flask during music theory class. I

Still holding a torch for the twang? The Heelers can pick, grin and drawl without getting a legal separation from rock. Eric Eisemann, Cody Garcia, Brad Steiger and Isaac Hoskins play at a laid-back pace, somewhere between a stroll and a slow hustle. Guitar lines jangle in a whine that gives off a whiff of the Smithereens, but the vocals are more in Chris Robinson’s neighborhood. Lyrically, the Heelers go from confessional to con-

frontational. In “That Easy,” things get personal: “There’s an inquest running in the back of my head/And I can’t play this game no more./After all the damn nasty things that you said/you’ve got nerve to walk through that door.” The Heelers can hold their own in a pub or at the rodeo. There’s enough rock and enough boot leather to keep the band in the good graces of indie enthusiasts and stockyard ramblers. Details: The Heelers play Saturday night at the Boiler Room. They open for the Mother Truckers with Austin’s the Jungle Rockers. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance. Cover is $12 for ages 21 and older, $15 for those younger than 21. Sounds like: The Black Crowes had a meeting of the minds with Lyle Lovett. — Lucinda Breeding

hey’re not afraid to get down and dirty, with no apologies and no holds barred. That’s the Mother Truckers, the blues-country-rock band from Austin that features the strong songwriting duo of powerhouse singer Teal Collins and blazing electric guitarist Josh Zee, with Danny G on bass and Pete “the Beat” Langhans on drums. They are promoting Van Tour, their new CD, released a month ago. The band’s Denton CD release party is this Saturday at the Boiler Room, 101 W. Hickory St. Also performing that night are Denton’s own blue-collar rock ’n’ roll band, the Heelers, and the Jungle Rockers, a garage rock-roots band from Austin. Advance tickets are $10. Tickets on the day of the show are $12 for ages 21 and older, and $15 for those ages 18 to 20. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 10 p.m. To buy tickets online, visit www.theboilerroomdenton.com/ tickets.htm.

Get ready to feel goose bumps. The multimedia event Dark Side of Oz starts at 10 p.m. today at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. A live band will perform the music of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, in sync with the classic movie The Wizard of Oz. Supposedly the music, while not entirely seamless, sequences closely with the film’s scenes. According to bar coowner Dan Mojica, the music starts when the MGM lion roars for the third time. Tickets are $5 at the door. — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

his year, the “125-Mile Visual Arts Exhibition” belongs to painters. The annual summer exhibit by the Visual Arts Society of Texas opened a week ago, with a wealth of work that is heavy on figurative paintings.

T

FROM LEFT: Andrea Albright painted a still life in Sunnyside Up, a look at a radiant bunch of sunflowers in watercolor. This piece, along with the others shown, is part of the Visual Art Society’s 125-Mile Exhibition at the TWU East and West galleries. Plano painter Donna Watson used acrylic on canvas in Blue Illusion. Her approach makes the piece look like a work of fiber art.

Muhkta, an oil pastel work by Diana Hampton, uses a sleek, dark dog as almost an architectural study. Flower Mound painter Diane Walker-Gladney piled up the intensity — and the red pigment — in Spill in the Shape of Florida. Walker-Gladney used acrylic paint, acetate and graphite to form the work. Juror Carol Carter, a respected St. Louis watercolor painter, said she felt a pull toward the paintings she selected for the show because she’s a figurative painter herself. Like most jurors, Carter looks for technical skills when choosing art that will make the exhibit. She also looks for what she calls “creative fearlessness.” “I think if it looks like a painting or work of art got into trouble — instead of throwing it away or starting over, the artist uses that as a starting point. That kind of fearlessness. If it looks like they just went ahead with a mistake, and they learned more from the painting because they conquered that that misstep, that’s what I notice, a fearless moving on from that.” The exhibit gets its name from the show’s eligibility rules. If an artist lives within 125 miles of Denton, he or she can submit work to the show. “The regional show that we had before it got so big, we changed it into a national show. But we thought a regional show was really important,” said photographer Lynne Cagle Cox, executive director of the arts society. “I think it gives artists in the Southwest another opportunity to compete,” Cox said. “Our national show draws about 800 entries. When you enter a show of that size, the chances of getting in are slim. This gives them another shot at getting into the gallery.” Carter chose the show from about 60 artists, with 40 artists making it

into the Texas Woman’s University East and West galleries. The exhibit does honor traditional painting techniques and subjects — a radiant bunch of sunflowers by Little Elm artist Andrea Albright evokes the classic lines and gaze of the still-life painter, but nudges the viewer with a fresh use of geometric perspective to give the piece a more contemporary feel. The exhibit also shows that the artists who made the cut aren’t tied too closely to conventions. Take Dallas artist LeeDon Moore, for example. In the sharply vertical piece The Music of the Wheel is Balm to the Soul, a photographic pigment print leans on the unforgiving precision of the lens to catch a body in flight (or, perhaps floating). Moore uses a decidedly lyrical viewpoint to make the photograph move and feel like a painting. Moore’s piece has a pleasing ambiguity to it. The figure is alone, but the movement looks like joy. Carter said she didn’t find any regional theme in the two-gallery exhibit. One thing she did notice: Artists in the Southwest are using “a hotter palette” color-wise than artists in the Midwest. Carter is lauded as a watercolor painter who takes risks, especially when it comes to the color in her figurative work. When it came down to decision time, Carter said, it was both technical skill and emotional impact that got her approval. The work that made the

exhibit challenged the mind and flexed the heart. “It makes you feel something emotionally, and pulls in closer to look at how it was made,” Carter said. “The best of show, it makes you have a second look. It makes you go: ‘Wow, how did they accomplish that?’ The other standard for me is if I had this feeling in my heart that I wish I had painted that piece, you know they did a really good piece. You covet it, even if you don’t work that way.” The exhibition runs through the first week of August. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.

OPENING FRIDAY The Killer Inside Me (##1/2) In this lurid and often melodramatic film based on the pulp fiction of novelist Jim Thompson, versatile director Michael Winterbottom examines the creeping psychosis that overtakes a small-town Texas sheriff’s deputy (Casey Affleck) in the mid-1950s as he murders a man for long-sought revenge, only to murder more and more when he finds he might be discovered. Some odd casting includes a passable Jessica Alba and a misplaced Kate Hudson. Rated R, 108 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen The Kids Are All Right (###1/2) Strong performances carry this incisive contemporary comedy about teenage siblings who track down their biological father (Mark Ruffalo), whose increased presence in their lives puts a strain on their lesbian mothers (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore). Writer-director Lisa Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon) creates characters and dialogue that ring true, along with scenarios that sidestep cliches and contrivances. It’s funny and poignant. Rated R, 106 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (##) There’s a familiar feeling to this frenetic but silly fantasy adventure, which supposedly draws its inspiration from the classic Disney cartoon. Nicolas Cage tones down his edgy weirdo act to kid-friendly levels as a sorcerer who employs a nerdy college student (Jay Baruchel) in an effort to save the future of Manhattan from his archrival. Despite a barrage of impressive visual-effects sequences, Jon Turteltaub’s film is empty at its core. Rated PG, 109 minutes. — T.J.

NOW PLAYING Despicable Me (###) Crisply animated CGI comedy about an insecure supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell) who wants to be renowned for his evil deeds, yet discovers it’s easier to walk the straight and narrow when his heart is melted by three little girls he adopts as part of a sinister plan to steal the moon and upstage an evil rival. The hip voice cast and quirky periphery characters are a plus, and while the film takes a while to find its footing, there are

What dreams may come hristopher Nolan is a visionary filmmaker. He must be in order to successfully navigate the complex relationship between dreams and reality in Inception, his latest mind-bending thriller. It’s a film that starts fast and remains taut as it weaves together a labyrinth of dreamlike mysteries that challenges the brains of its viewers and transports its characters to a completely original world — or, more accurately, state of mind. The plot revolves around Dom (Leonardo DiCaprio), a

man who specializes in the illegal practice of extraction, or stealing secrets from a person’s mind while the victim is dreaming. He is renowned for his skills yet racked with internal guilt over the death of his wife (Marion Cotillard), whose presence haunts his own dreams. His latest job, which he hopes will be his last, involves implanting an idea in the dream of the heir to a corporation (Cillian Murphy) rather than extracting it, which is a

convoluted and potentially dangerous operation for Dom and his sidekicks, including a college student (Ellen Page) and an expert tactician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Nolan’s screenplay straddles a fine line between gimmicky and fascinating, and fortunately leans toward the latter. Nolan (The Dark Knight) seems to understand that dealing with concepts such as dreams and fantasy allows the storyteller to make up the rules as he goes along, yet also requires careful construction so as not to cut corners when it comes to logical explanation. The film is a technical marvel, sharply edited and filled with powerful imagery in its dream sequences. DiCaprio offers a superb portrayal of a man who is passion-

plenty of solid laughs to be had as long as you don’t walk in expecting the next Pixar extravaganza. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Grown Ups Childhood pals (Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and David Spade) reunite

as adults. With Salma Hayek and Maria Bello. — The Associated Press The Karate Kid (###) A remake of the 1984 film might seem unnecessary, but at least this version changes some of the details, following a 12-year-old from Detroit (Jaden

Smith) who moves to Beijing with his mother (Taraji P. Henson), where he gets beaten up by a bigger kid at his school, so he seeks advice from a wise but reclusive handyman (Jackie Chan). It all leads up to a climactic kung fu tournament, of course.

Inception Rated PG-13, 148 minutes. Opens Friday.

ate yet deeply conflicted. And the supporting cast is terrific, even down to the small rolls filled by Michael Caine, Tom Berenger and Pete Postlethwaite. By the time it juggles no fewer than four levels of dreams simultaneously, Inception threatens to collapse under the weight of its own ambition. It demands constant attention and might require multiple viewings to piece together all of its twists and intricacies. Still, in a summer overflowing with sequels and retreads, the level of inspiration alone is praiseworthy. Inception is quite a trip.

While the direction needs more discipline, the backdrops are scenic, and Smith and Chan generate a convincing student-teacher chemistry. Rated PG, 140 minutes. — T.J.

inutes into the often harrowing new documentary Restrepo, the men of the 2nd Platoon, Battle Company, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade come under fire in the Korengal Valley of eastern Afghanistan. In this incident, no one dies. But from 2007 to 2009, when U.S. troops withdrew from the area, 50 Americans died there. Filmmakers Tim Hethering-

As a result, Restrepo is unparalleled in conveying both the mental and physical perils of this unorthodox warfare. So, it is understandable that when talking about the sniper

Knight and Day (## 1/2) Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz star as a pair of would-be, thrown-together lovers who spend the movie fleeing from a bunch of either good guys or bad guys. Director James Mangold keeps the action rapidly moving along, almost fast enough to overlook the film’s total unbelievability. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. — B.A. The Last Airbender (##) Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has adapted a popular children’s anime series with a dazzling array of special effects. It’s up to a boy named Aang (Noah Ringer) and his two sidekicks to avenge the extinction of his kingdom and bring peace to the world. As with many of his previous films, Shyamalan seems to take his subject matter too seriously, and the screenplay gets sidetracked with tedious mumbojumbo. Rated PG, 103 minutes. — T.J. Predators (# 1/2) Adrien Brody continues his unfortunate string of post-Oscar career choices with this reworking of the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi thriller about a group of mercenaries who are dropped into a remote jungle, where they are left to fight for survival against vicious alien beasts. Toy Story 3 (####) Eleven years after the first sequel to Toy Story, this 3-D installment is a hilarious and exciting mix of fresh and familiar aimed at fans of the first two films. The clever story follows Woody, Buzz and the gang of
