IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK
A bite at the apple C
o-director M’Lisa Hansen hopes the young cast and crew of Little Snow White: A Grimm Musical finish the production with confidence in their work ethic and skills. “The first thing I want them to learn is that age is no excuse,” said Hansen, who shares the leadership of the Denton Community Theatre Theatre School show with Karen Gossett. “The second thing is that I want them to experience something besides mediocrity.” Like Gossett, Hansen has spent her professional life in the Denton school district, urging students to adopt excellence as a basic standard in the arts. “People sometimes expect children to not work as hard, or not perform as well, as adults. We don’t hold to that,” she said. The school offers a summer theater camp each year that teaches students — from elementary to high school — how to produce a musical. The ensemble performing Little Snow White has been working three and a half weeks. Gossett approached another Denton theater teacher, the now-retired John Evarts, to turn his original play into a musical. Evarts wrote a version of the fairy tale about 15 years ago for his McMath Middle School students.
“Originally, it had one song — the prologue,” Evarts said. “I wrote 23 numbers for this musical version.” Evarts returned the story to its origins in the Grimms’ fairy tale, when the story was considerably darker. “The story was published in 1812. It was revised in 1850, and it was changed from it being about Snow White’s mother to a stepmother,” Evarts said. A cast of 30 tells the story about a gorgeous queen who gets increasingly panicked as her daughter grows more beautiful with the years. Fourteen-year-old Julia Durbin of Denton said the queen is a complicated woman. She said she hoped to win the role when she auditioned for the show. “The Queen has a pretty broad range, and there is some alto in there, which I think makes a more powerful sound,” she said. Playing the Queen has been fun.
“As a person, I’m not that mean, and it’s always fun to play someone who’s not very much like you,” Durbin said. Hansen said the show will satisfy the musicians in the audience, and the story itself is magical enough for the very young and meaty enough for the adults. Gloom and doom don’t have their way, as the fairy tale goes. Little Snow White is suitable for all ages. The seven dwarfs cut a comedic picture, scuttling around on their knees. Jokes and sight gags lighten the mood, too.

Trammell Group takes on high tech, old age in benefit
The Trammell Group is back together, and this time, the beneficiary of the fundraising ensemble is the newest venue of the Denton Community Theatre. Nearly a year ago, the nonprofit company opened a new black box theater in downtown Denton. The space is a rehearsal and educational space and an additional performance venue for local groups. To raise funds next weekend, the Trammell Group presents
That’s Life, a parody by Donna Trammell. The 90-minute musical spotlights and spoofs the real facts of life — everything from oil spills, inflation, political correctness and Facebook to a medley of “Old Folks Songs” lamenting nose hair, memory loss, acid reflux and assorted dysfunctions. It’s billed as a celebration of the Trammell Group’s 25-year history with Denton Community Theatre and local audiences. Performances will be at 7:30

What happens when Slavens, Gray meet
W
hen Denton artist Matthew Gray fronted a band called Writer at North by 35 Conferette in 2010, we simply called the result “pretty.” When local piano man, radio host and arranger Paul Gray Slavens released Alphabet Girls, Volume 1, we pronounced the album theatrical. Slavens and Gray, who is best known for his band Matthew and the Arrogant Sea, have been making noise together in a duo they’ve named Fiances. Denton gets its first chance to hear what the two men have accomplished at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Saturday night. The artists have said the music is dramatic, a bit overblown but basically pop. The ’70s have been an influence, with the two dipping their pens in a number of influences: electronic music of the era, Motown and some jazz. Overall, Fiances make poppy, easy-on-theears music about love, lust and every shade in between. Sounds like: Leonard

Ellis island Artist tries hand at country record — not the radio kind
R
obert Ellis says he can’t identify too much with the music on country radio these days. When he writes a song, the Houston musician said, he drinks from the well of Willie Nelson, George Jones and Randy Newman. “When I say country music, I mean classic country, said Ellis by phone from Chicago. Ellis will play Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton on Saturday, just after playing several dates with the Old 97’s. “I love the songwriting in country music. It’s very simple and to the point. I like that challenge in songwriting. Ellis, no stranger to Denton, is touring in support of Photographs, a country album that he made according to an indie formula. Ellis wrote an A-side and a B-side, with the intent of releasing the record on vinyl first. You can buy the album on iTunes, he said, but he never conceived Photographs as a group of singles. “The whole thing with making singles, it’s just not how I listen to music and it’s not how I make music, he said. “I come from the place where you listen to an album. You listen to the whole thing. So I definitely made this for vinyl. Using an acoustic guitar and no-frills lyrics, Ellis keeps close to the ethos he loves about country music. He says what he means: “I sold those guns and bottle cart/Don’t have anyplace

to shoot ’em no more ‌ Ain’t it funny how memories can feel/ Ain’t it strange what time can steal?â€? His picking is mostly melody line. In “Cemetery,â€? strings bleed into the song, grieving for what’s been lost. It’s not just the nostalgia that sounds sweet on Photographs, it’s the conviction in his easy croon on tongue-in-cheek numbers like “What’s in It for Me?â€? Ellis has one of those voices that can take the baritone line in a gospel hymn, and just as easy knock around in the tenor range. His songs feel as if they’re made to savor. “All the songs are true stories about things that happened to me. Some of the songs like ‘No Fun’ were obviously a joke about cheating in a relationship,â€? he said. “Obviously, I’d never do those things to my wife. Exploring part of myself is what makes me a better songwriter — the country songs that are a little less personal. Whether I reasonably agree with them, it’s good for me to explore them this way.â€? Photographs lives in its two halves: one side possibly too country for indie-folk fans, the other a touch too earnest for George Jones fans. Sounds like: Don McLean spent a songwriting retreat in Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch studio. Or something artist Josh Pearson might listen to alone. — Lucinda Breeding

Red, white & true
‘Captain America’ is old-fashioned, solid, patriotic
By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic
L
et Tony Stark make the wisecracks and Nick Fury give the intimidating commands. As Steve Rogers, Chris Evans brings an earnest dignity and intelligence to Captain America: The First Avenger, the final Marvel Comics setup for next summer’s all-star blockbuster The Avengers. There’s little humor here outside a few moments in which this superhero discovers the full breadth of his powers and the presence of Tommy Lee Jones, who shows up and does that bemused, condescending thing he can do in his sleep. Director Joe Johnston’s film feels weighty and substantial, even in the dreaded and needless 3-D, and it has a beautiful, sepia-toned, art-deco look about it. The lighting, production design, costumes, even the perfect shade of red lipstick on retro-chic Hayley Atwell all look just right. Plenty of action awaits, but it’s not empty or glossy. You are not in for a giddy, winking, high-flying summer fling. And that’s OK — there’s something appealing about such an old-fashioned approach. Evans, who previously played a Marvel comic-book hero as the smart-alecky Human Torch in both Fantastic Four movies, takes a very different tone here as the World War II fighting hero. Rogers is a scrawny kid from Brooklyn with dreams of military glory who keeps getting rejected each time he tries to sign up for service. (In a creepy but seamless special effect, Evans’ head is placed on a skinny body; that deep, serious voice of his gives the character gravitas and heart.) Scientist Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) sees something special in him, though, and enlists him for a daring experiment. Through some high-tech injections, Steve is transformed into a super soldier known as Captain America.
Paramount Pictures
Chris Evans plays scrawny kid turned buff hero in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Captain America: The First Avenger Rated PG-13, 126 minutes. Opens Friday.
But Rogers isn’t the only one who’s been juicing: Hugo Weav-
ing plays the former Nazi leader Johann Schmidt, who will reveal himself to be the villainous Red Skull. He’s formed his own splinter group, Hydra, and insists that his minions greet him with a Hitler-style salute. The rest of the abundant supporting cast includes Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, who’s skeptical of the kid’s abilities; Dominic Cooper as the clever and charming inventor Howard Stark; and Atwell as
British agent Peggy Carter. Atwell’s character is better developed than you might imagine; she’s no damsel in distress, waiting for Captain America to save her, but rather a trained fighter who’s very much his equal. But Captain America is far more engaging when it’s about a scrappy underdog overcoming the odds than it is about generic shoot-outs and exploding tanks.

Styx wields a rock-till-you-drop attitude that’s done them good for four decades

icky Phillips did not wake up this morning with a hot cup of coffee named after his band. The bassist confirms the existence of Styx Special Brew, an Italian roast Minneapolis label Coffee
Fool sells as “a unique energy that’ll keep your buds sufficiently confused, but ... begging for more.” That’s something a semi-retired rock star might do. Phillips, 57, is very much not retired. Like any rock star might be, he’s in a hotel lobby coffee bar trying to remember what city he’s in today.

He settles on Milwaukee, where his six-piece progressive rock fleet took the main indoor stage at Milwaukee Summerfest with Def Leppard last night. This morning is one of 200 he’ll spend on the road with his bandmates this year. Styx will be within an easy drive of Denton on Friday when the group plays at WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla. “Tommy [Shaw] said to me, when they offered me the position, ‘Listen — one of the things I want you to consider: We wanna do this till we drop. So unless you
want that, please don’t say yes to this,’” Phillips said. The Bad English alumnus joined Styx in 2001, just after vocalist Shaw and guitarist James Young organized Volunteers for America. Styx played both installments of the two-show benefit held as tribute to the victims of 9/11: one in Georgia and one in Dallas at Smirnoff Music Center the next night.
The band’s standard operating procedure since 1999 has been to play more often — the band brags about hacking more live performances since that year than any of its previous 30 years combined — and with more meaning. That intention manifested itself in “The Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight” theater tour from last year, which saw Styx performing those breakout records from ’77 and ’78 in their entirety (“Come Sail Away” See STYX on 10

came from the first, a tripleplatinum record) with stories of each song projected on a screen behind the band. Or, as Phillips reiterates often, making a difference can look like living — and aging — better. “We’re as dedicated to our instruments as just being good people,” he said. “OK. Early 20s, it was basically about doing the gig, finding out where the girls were hanging out, and how to get the girls back to your hotel room,” he said. “The people who have learned that isn’t the recipe for success are the people who are still around. You have to be healthy to dive off drum risers.” Former Styx road buddies Journey, REO Speedwagon and current tourmates Yes are groups Phillips counts in that fit number. The bassist gushes about his crew, his witty band-
mates — “there are two guys in my band that could be on SNL” — and the opportunities this summer tour affords to play golf. But mostly, slipping prog’s higher math into power ballads for thousands of people every night and challenging himself as a composer is what Phillips said keeps him in the game. It’s something the Beatles taught him, and it’s what makes Styx so epic and memorable for their fans. “It’s something we thrive on, like an addiction,” Phillips says.
