Angelina Jolie exceeds an implausible story — as well as her previous action roles — as Evelyn Salt in Salt.

OPENING FRIDAY Agora (###) This intellectually ambitious period piece from Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar (The Sea Inside) is set in Roman Egypt and stars Rachel Weisz as the famous philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria, whose atheistic teachings run counter to the beliefs of a peasant (Max Minghella) who falls in love with her. Amenabar throws a lot of high-minded ideas on the screen, showing how religion helped shape a moment in history. Although the drama becomes unfocused, Weisz gives a commanding and provocative lead performance. Not rated, 127 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson The Nature of Existence (##) Documentary filmmaker Roger Nygard (Trekkies) circles the globe trying to figure out the meaning of life in this travelogue that might be of interest to others who share Nygard’s curiosity about life’s most profound mysteries, but is tedious for the rest of us. As he talks to folks from all walks of life, Nygard is goodnatured and some of his subjects are amusing. But while the film has a positive message about embracing rather than condemning our differences, by the end it feels like a journey that’s gone nowhere. Not rated, 94 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Ramona and Beezus Based on the bestselling book by Beverly Cleary, Ramona Quimby (Joey King) is a plucky youngster with an irrepressible sense of fun and mischief — a fact that keeps her big sister, Beezus (Selena Gomez), on her toes. Ramona’s vivid imagination and boundless energy serve her well when she and Beezus must help save their family’s home. Rated G, 104 minutes.

NOW PLAYING Despicable Me (###) Crisply animated CGI comedy about an insecure supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell) who wants to be renowned for his evil deeds, yet discovers it’s easier to walk the straight and narrow when his heart is melted by three little girls he adopts as part of a sinister plan to steal the moon and upstage an evil rival. Salt exceeds her story Jolie’s heroine unrestrained by nonsensical script Who is Salt? That’s the tagline for the high-octane espionage thriller starring Angelina Jolie in the title role, and it certainly is the key question for both characters and audiences throughout the film. It does showcase one of the physically toughest heroines we’ve seen in quite some time, one capable of mastering all the martial arts, high-tech weaponry and strategic cunning usually reserved for the most macho of

action stars. As the film opens, Evelyn Salt is a CIA officer whose loyalty is brought into question during the simple interrogation of a Russian defector who accuses her of being a spy in a Soviet mission that has spanned decades. One of her colleagues (Liev Schreiber) stands by Salt, while another (Chiwetel Ejiofor) insists she be brought in for questioning. Only Salt seems to know for

sure which side she’s on as she becomes a fugitive, with brief flashbacks providing vague clues. Eventually, the global game of cat-and-mouse takes on high stakes, with a political assassination and related fallout putting the world on the brink of nuclear war. But is Salt the instigator or the potential savior? Jolie portrays Salt as a character that is resourceful and resilient, chameleonic and crafty, as she maintains her wits while facing one life-threatening situation after another. It trumps Jolie’s previous physical roles in terms of ambition and conviction. As directed by Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games), the film is taut and stylish, and hardly pauses

are a plus, and while the film takes a while to find its footing, there are plenty of solid laughs to be had as long as you don’t walk in expecting the next Pixar extravaganza. With Salma Hayek and Maria Bello. — The Associated Press

Inception (###1/2) The latest mindbending thriller from visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) is about Dom (Leonardo DiCaprio), a man who specializes in the illegal practice of extraction, or stealing secrets from a person’s mind while the victim is dreaming. In what he hopes will be his last job, Dom must implant an idea in the dream of the heir to a corporation (Cillian

Murphy) rather than extract it. At times, Inception threatens to collapse under the weight of its own ambition, but it showcases some real imagination and visual flair. Terrific supporting cast includes Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph GordonLevitt, Michael Caine and Tom Berenger. Rated PG-13, 148 minutes. — T.J. Knight and Day (##1/2) Tom Cruise

to take a breath. And the script by Kurt Wimmer (Law Abiding Citizen) isn’t meant to be taken seriously. It throws logic out the window in favor of a series of nonstop fights, chases and stunt sequences, and takes viewers along for an exciting ride. There are a few red herrings and clever twists amid the nonsense, but Salt the character remains more compelling than Salt the movie. Still, it’s a more attractive option for mindless summer fun than most of the sequels and retreads currently hoarding space in the average multiplex.

That doesn’t mean its easy to sing the songs that map out the inevitable romance between Troy Bolton, the

golden boy of the high school basketball team, and the studious Gabriella Montez. “Yeah, the music is hard,” said Jackson Strecher, 15, who shares the role of Troy with Michael Hanson, 14. “The songs are pretty high, and I’m not even a tenor.” “We were taken to a room where we worked in the music,” Michael said. “When we were in there, I was like: ‘I’m going to lose my voice.’” Elizabeth Jolly, 14, shares the role of Gabriella with Rachel David, 16. Elizabeth said the music for the girls isn’t as tough as it is for the role of Troy. It was still a challenge, though. “I carried around a bag of cough drops the first week of rehearsals,” Elizabeth said.

Jackson Strecher, left, has to get on the ball if he wants to keep his title as the king of the court in High School Musical Jr. The theater school is staging a special edition of the show, High School Musical Jr., said director Michael Thompson. The musical is shortened to a long one-act piece, with musical

remind adult viewers of Grease, another musical about high school hallway politics. High School Musical is a sanitized version of the story, stripping the naughtiness and raunch away to reveal the heart of both stories: Will the leading teens drop their masks and compromise with one another? “I knew we were going to have a shift change with our staff this summer,” Thompson said. “Because of that, I knew we needed to do something familiar. The staff has shared the work on a lot of the aspects of the show. Several of us have worked on the choreography, and several have worked on the music. So everyone has gotten familiar with it.” Thompson said this year’s camp includes about 50 returning campers and 50 new ones. His directorial team and camp staff is made up of area theater teachers, and he’s got a lot of former students from his middle school teaching days. Thompson now teaches theater at Ryan High School. “We deliberately used both the Ryan High and Denton High colors in the set,”

Thompson said. “We used Ryan’s colors on the costumes and the lockers. The hallway is purple. And we used the Wildcats mascot from Guyer High School. They’re all represented.” Thompson double-cast the lead roles to give more campers a chance to discover the demands of a plum role. He fleshed out the cast with basketball players, drama students, music nerds and at least one teacher with designs on a feminist revision of Shakespeare. The leading performers said there are pros and cons to sharing their roles. “Whenever someone needs you to do something [rehearsing songs, dances or working scenes] you can go and do it and the rehearsal on stage can go on,” Elizabeth said. “That can be a con, too,” Jackson said. “Having to leave rehearsal to go talk to someone can be a bad thing.” Michael Hanson said the double cast means more players get to experience the responsibility of starring in a show, and all the perks. Elizabeth said the performers have made the characters their own instead of copying the performances of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

“We’ve tried to make them really independent, even though they’re really dependent on each other in the movie. It’s even like that in the play, too,” she said. The leads have learned from watching each other. “I find Jackson is a fast learner,” Michael Hanson said. “He went out and learned all his lines, and looked at all his songs and was on the ball.” “I think Mike made Troy a cool, confident guy,” Jackson said. “I made him a little less confident because, you know, that’s me. But I like how Mike made him confident.” Cody Vann, 15, and Summer Sanchez, 12, play the delicious, hateable duo of Sharpay and Ryan Evans. The two are ruthless operators who’d rather annihilate Troy and Gabby than yield the spotlight to them. Cody and Summer are scene stealers, and made no bones about loving their villains. “Ms. [Jeannene] Abney has told me through the rehearsals that I am under no circumstances allowed to act like this at [Ryan High] school in theater, because she’ll break me down to size,” Cody said. “Ryan and Sharpay are the roles to be in this show.”

WHAT HAPPENS IN HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL Gabriella Montez is new to East High. She’s a shy, studious girl who likes to sing. As she tries to figure out her new school, Gabriella discovers that Troy, who she met at a party over karaoke, is the school’s most prized athlete. She learns something else about Troy. He’s kept his love of music to himself, so he won’t lose the respect of his dad or his teammates. Troy gets to know Gabriella and when they are thrown together in auditions for the East High musical, they learn that there’s something even worse than the divide between social circles. They discover that drama queen Sharpay Evans and her brother Ryan will stop at nothing to win the spotlight.

Decked out in sequins, feathers and all manor of super-fly clothes, Cody and Summer mug, strut and work off each other in their two numbers. Summer said Sharpay couldn’t work her comical black magic without Ryan. And she couldn’t be the shining star. “I think in both ways, they need each other,” Sanchez said. “If she didn’t have Ryan and Ryan didn’t have her, not only could she not be the star, but she couldn’t be who she is. And neither could he.” The score is written in a style

Continued from Page 8 The Last Airbender (##) Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has adapted a popular children’s anime series with a dazzling array of special effects. It’s up to a boy named Aang (Noah Ringer) and his two sidekicks to avenge the extinction of his kingdom and bring peace to the world. As with many of his previous films, Shyamalan seems to take his subject matter too seriously, and the screenplay gets sidetracked with tedious mumbojumbo. Rated PG, 103 minutes. — T.J. Predators (#1/2) Adrien Brody continues his unfortunate string of postOscar career choices with this reworking of the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi thriller about a group of mercenaries who are dropped into a remote jungle, where they are left to fight for survival against vicious alien beasts. As with the 1987 original, it sounds like a better concept for a video game than a film, but this is like watching someone else play. Shot in Austin with subpar visual effects, the result is more tedious than suspenseful. Directed by Nimrod Antal (Vacancy). With Topher Grace. Rated R, 107 minutes. — T.J. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (##) There’s a familiar feeling to this fre-

that straddles contemporary pop music with a hint of R&B. The rhythms are tricky and the choruses big, but the campers haven’t backed down. The musical makes much of the chasm between jocks and nerds, between cheerleaders and band geeks. But in the end, the students learn they can bridge the distance. The singing and dancing, they say, is the icing on the cake. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Her e-mail address is cbreeding@dentonrc.com.
