dancer who has taught and performed in Denton will return briefly to present a hip-hop master class. After the class for ages 10 and older on Saturday, dancer and instructor Chris Koehl will travel back to Los Angeles to complete the taping of the Fox reality television show So You Think You Can Dance. Koehl made it into the top 14 dancers in the series’ current season. At Denton Dance Conservatory, he has

taught hip-hop dance — a form of dance founded on urban streets performed with rap, hip-hop and urban music. He is also a member of FTroop, a competition hip-hop dance crew with the Revelation Dance Studio in Dallas. Several years ago, he choreographed and performed a solo in the Denton City Contemporary Ballet’s A Gift for Emma. The class starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Denton Dance Conservatory, 4103

Mesa Drive. The class costs $20 per person. Koehl is the second hiphop teacher from the local conservatory to make it onto the Fox TV series. Comfort Fedoke taught hip-hop dance at the studio before the series led her to appear in music videos, go on R&B tours and head into the recording studio. For more information about the class, call 940-3832623. — Lucinda Breeding

n his Facebook page, Denton’s Bone Doggie spells it right out: “Don’t wanna be famous … just local.” So the long-haired, hatwearing roots rocker toils away in Denton venues with nary a shred of self-promotion. At 4 p.m. Sept. 11, Boone will

share stories about his life and career and perform a few of his hit songs in “An Evening With Pat Boone.” The evening will feature video clips and blooper reels from his television appearances. Billed as a “multimedia, autobiographical pop culture journey,” “An Evening With Pat Boone” will take place in the Murchison Performing Arts Center, located on the north side of Interstate 35E at North Texas Boulevard. That’s how Cardo’s Vegetable Festival was born. Austin said that as soon as they floated the idea of the event among their volunteers, friends and peers in the sustainable food movement, the offers to plan came rolling in. Chris Oller, founder of Peace Kitchen, agreed to whip up some food using crops from the Cardo’s plots. Additional food and drinks will be served by Denton Juice Co., The Chestnut Tree and others. At least one vendor will serve kabusecha, a mellow Japanese green tea. Sellers from the Denton Community Market will participate, and the owners of the sustainable Krum dairy MoonRyvRanch plan to be there, too. Denton’s Gutterth Productions has put together a concert featuring a local lineup: Burnt Sienna Trio, Dust Congress and Glen Farris. The festival, along with a Kickstarter.com

Their eggs are laid by chickens that have the run of a comfortable pen, with ample shade and sunlight. “We want to be an educational model for sustainable agriculture,” Austin said. “This is a movement that is growing. There are community-supported farms across the country, and people are interested in knowing where their food comes from.” Moon and Austin met in New York last year. Austin had just graduated from the University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree in drawing and painting, and moved to New York for an internship. Moon, who studied agriculture, said Austin kept mentioning the Ponder farm. “I’d always had this land on my mind,” Austin said. “I believed it was valuable. I came back to Denton from New York in November. When Dan came through town, I told him he had to come out and check out the farm. It evolved, you know? Cardo [landowner Rick Orndoff ] needed a caretaker for the animals and delivery for the sprouts.” Austin got the caretaking job, and Moon soon followed. As they started to work the land and tend the chickens, ducks, guinea hens and two Jersey cows, Austin said they started dreaming about the farm’s future. “We have so many ideas,” Austin said. “Each week, we’d be talking and it would be: ‘We could do this, or we could do this.’ There’s almost no end

THE EVOLUTION OF A FARM Cardo’s Farm Project grew out of Cardo’s Sprout Farm, a modest expanse of acreage in Ponder where Rick “Cardo” Orndoff has grown and sold wheatgrass to the Cupboard Natural Foods and Cafe and Jupiter House and Jupiter House Europa coffee shops for years, taking back thousands of pounds of discarded coffee grounds to compost. The sprout farm is no longer. The farm is there and still cultivating sprouts, eggs and vegetables, but farm managers Amanda Austin and Dan Moon are working to expand it, grow more food and become an official member of the community-supported agriculture (CSA) movement in Denton. That means area residents would invest in a “share” of the farm, and in return pick up a weekly supply of fresh produce. Cardo’s Farm Project has launched a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter.com. Just search for “Cardo’s.”

to what we could do.” They have crops planted in several plots, and sprout seedlings growing in modified shipping containers. Austin and Moon have planted a new orchard — peaches, plums, pears, persimmons and apricot trees — and have tilled a new field that is ready for planting.

The farm could serve a host of needs. Cardo’s already offers affordable classes and workshops for adults and children, though Austin hopes the children’s garden flourishes. From growing to canning and cooking, Cardo’s could be just the ticket for Denton-area residents who want to join the local food movement but aren’t sure how to start. “Hopefully, this place will be a resource for space and for information,” Austin said. The most important role for the farm will always be outreach. The New York farm where the managers worked had a partnership with Cornell University. High school students near the farm earned a paycheck from Cornell for picking up produce and then distributing it in low-income areas. “It’s not just about growing a vegetable today, it’s also about food security and building more resilient infrastructure for our food supply,”

Denton Record-Chronicle/Al Key

Amanda Austin arranges seedlings that have just germinated in the hothouse at Cardo’s Farm Project in Ponder. Moon said. The vegetable festival is a celebration of those ideas, big and small, that invite local residents to help grow and harvest a local, organic food source. They can already sample some of the crops at restaurants such as Hannah’s off the Square or the Cupboard, or drink a shot of wheatgrass juice at Jupiter House. During the festival, vendors will have their booths

between the farming plots, and the musicians will play on a stage between the living quarters and the greenhouse. “We just want people to come out and have food, drinks and just enjoy themselves,” Austin said. “We just want everyone to have fun.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. OPENING FRIDAY Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest This documentary tells the story of the influential hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest. With Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Mohammed and Jarobi White. Written and directed by Michael Rapaport. Rated R, 98 minutes. At the Angelika Plano. — Los Angeles Times Crazy Stupid Love (##1/2) Steve Carell stars as Cal, a nebbishy 40something whose high school sweetheart, Emily (Julianne Moore), announces that she’s slept with someone else and wants a divorce. Cal finds an unlikely mentor in Jacob (Ryan Gosling), an expensively dressed womanizer who gives him a makeover. Gosling has a great, flirty chemistry with Emma Stone as the one woman who sees through his game. But for a movie that intends to be rooted in a recognizable and insightful reality, this features an awful lot of moments that clang in a contrived, feel-good manner. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — The Associated Press Life, Above All In South Africa, a 12year-old girl fights against prejudice and superstition while trying to bring her mother home and keep her family together. With Khomotso Manyaka, Keaobaka Makanyane and Harriet Manamela. In Pedi with English subtitles. Rated PG-13, 106 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — LAT Sarah’s Key Decades after a woman’s harrowing childhood experiences during the Nazi occupation of France, her story intertwines with an American journalist researching the past. Harry Gregson Williams provides a musical score that, when it can be heard over the roaring din, ably complements the constant action. Craig makes a convincing cowboy, while Ford seems to enjoy chewing vast amounts of sagebrush scenery. But the grand supporting cast of Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, Keith Carradine, Clancy Brown, Abigail Spencer and others goes almost unnoticed, which seems natural in a film with so many other distractions. he best thing about the new Cowboys and Aliens is that, despite its mirthprovoking title, it takes itself seriously. It never winks or smirks at the fact that it uses two vastly different movie genres and treats them, if not with respect, at least sincerely. Director Jon Favreau, who has somehow segued from eccentric character actor to the go-to director for big-budget action movies (Iron Man, Iron Man 2), again succeeds in tackling a project that could easily have gone awry. He uses the screenplay from a quintet of writers to fashion an enjoyable, almost believable, mixture — that is, as believable as a movie can be that deals with intergalactic warfare.

Cowboys and Aliens Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. Opens Friday.

The title more or less reveals all in its story of intense cowboy Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) who wakes up somewhere on the 1873 Arizona range not knowing who he is or where he is. And he wears a strange metallic bracelet he cannot remove. From there, Cowboys and Aliens seems to follow Western formula, however briefly, as Lonergan wanders into town, has several scuffles and is thrown into jail. He only leaves when the town’s attacked by a

squadron of flying machines that discharges explosives while also roping townspeople and whisking them away. Lonergan joins forces with crusty local land baron Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford), as the two embark on a John Ford-worthy odyssey. They link with an Apache tribe and then with Lonergan’s former outlaw gang. And of course, a beautiful woman (Olivia Wilde) with her own mysteries figures in. The film unfortunately falters when the disparate group grapples with monsters that look like many other science-fiction movie creations — sort of an Alien/Starship Troopers blend. But even these familiar beasts can deliver frights and scares when they pop up unexpectedly or are thrown in our faces. Favreau lets cinematograph-
