usty vistas and men on horseback are burned into the American imagination when it visualizes the West. Local artists return to the well-worn muse in the upcoming Oxide Gallery exhibition “Wild, Wild West.” Cowboys make an appearance, as do the crusty, red peaks of Colorado, Wyoming and Utah. But “Wild, Wild West” isn’t strictly a love letter to the frontier — it’s a mix of American Indian, Western and Southwestern themes dreamed and depicted by artists who live and work mostly in the city — or the rural-light neighborhoods a short drive away from it. Artist Paul Keithley reminds the viewer of the eternal preeminence of nature in Approaching Storm, a photograph that catches a timeless image — a bird watching a hair’s-width bolt of lightning splitting the far off slate sky while perching on the side of a deteriorating wagon bed. Keithley’s lens is contemporary — ringing with clarity and precision — but what we’re watching is as old as the defiant North Texas soil. Photographer Monte Borders returns to the gallery with another of his intriguing photographs. An old storefront sits all

Pink to grace Hailey’s stage on Monday Seeing Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti in person is reason enough to go to Hailey’s on Monday night. Most of the prolific, freakyfolk frontman’s cult following is a result of recordings of the self-made basement variety. The 32-year-old Los Angeles native’s lo-fi mash-up of ’80s influences wasn’t made for live performance, so previous live shows were panned. But his latest album, Before Today (which follows a long list of ultra-limited-edition cassette, CD-R and LP releases), was produced by the big-time label 4AD, and so this one has higher, slicker production values — perhaps a sign he’s ready to build a serious fan base. Along with the new release comes a nationwide tour with Tim Koh on bass and vocals, Kenny Gilmore on guitar and vocals, and Aaron Sperske on drums and vocals — an effort that took six purportedly painful months to put together. This time the result should be, at the very least, interesting. Ariel Pink’s a pioneer of a genre called chillwave — heavy on the processed electronics and danceable with electro-pop hooks. His tunes are catchy, and sharp ears can’t miss the unmistakable references to

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti With Puro Instinct and Magic Kids. 9 p.m. Monday at Hailey’s Club, 122 W. Mulberry St. Tickets are $10 for those older than 21, $12 for those younger than 21. Visit www.haileysclub.com.

musical styles from days not so long ago, but it’s not a smooth sail. Instead, it’s threaded with a somewhat unnerving underlying tension and lyrics that might raise an eyebrow or two. If you’re lucky, you might be able to nab the last copy of the 12-inch EP entitled Ariel Pink with Added Pizzazz, the result of a collaboration with the Dallas-based avant-garde jazz group. If you miss out, no worries: The first cut on Before Today, “Hot Body Rub,” was recorded with the Gonzalez father-and-sons trio. Be on the lookout for the possibility of a guest appearance (wink, wink). Live, you can count on Pink to be his limp-haired, prettyboy-girl-boy self, delivering lyrics in flat, non-emotive intensity while adding in his signature mouth-made drum sounds. His shtick is definitely out there, which has made more than a few wonder: Is Ariel Pink crazy or genius? Believers believe so. — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

P

eopleodian has a busy weekend, and it starts today at We Denton Do It: No Bummer Summer, a showcase at Dan’s Silverleaf. Then the band plays the Boiler Room on Friday night.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

Peopleodian is James Washington on electronics, Chris Bryan on drums and Ally Hoffmann on vocals. With house show experience under its belt, the trio makes the most of Hoffmann’s soft, easy soprano and Washington’s clean sounds. Their music affects a dreamy, otherworldly posture. There’s a lot of ascending, descending and plodding on Washington’s end of the stage. Occasionally, it sounds like he’s recorded “The Bells of St. Mary” played on champagne flutes, fed into his computer and reconstituted it as an alien world’s lullaby. Sounds like: Bjork lent her soft, girlish sighs to Hoffmann without the weird-for-weirdness’-sake. Or P.J. Harvey decided to lighten up, both in mood and voice. Details: Peopleodian joins Slow Animal, Stunts and Sex Tape at Dan’s. Music starts at 9:30 p.m. Cover is $5. The trio joins Babar, EPDAGR and Dear Human at the Boiler Room, 101 W. Hickory St., Friday. Doors open at 7 p.m.; music starts at 10 p.m. Cover is $7 for ages 21 and older, $10 for 20 and younger. All-ages show. I Dear Human, a Denton outfit represented by Gutterth Records, doesn’t need no stinking lyrics. That’s not to say the group spends all its energy adding guitar ornaments to its set, but there is something more than the usual ambient buzz of instrumental upstarts. Dear Human begins with pretty lines that can suddenly bang off in different directions, only to reunite before the last notes. Nalley sometimes plays the leader, nudging his band mates to leave a sophisticated solo for some noisier fair. That said, Minshew and Gillespie will have their say, creating a trilling bridge in the song, where a vocalist would typically pull in the reins. Dear Human held court during the North by 35 Music Conferette during its set at the Boiler Room, and the boys appeared confident that they younger than 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Free. p.m. Friday, at the Boiler Room, 101 W. Hickory St. Music starts at 10 p.m. Cover is $7 for ages 21 and older, $10 for 20 and younger. All-ages show. I Denton’s Curvette bills itself as a post-punk, classic rock outfit — both labels that conjure caterwauling guitars and shrieked vocals that dabble in scatology or Sticking It to the Man. Neither category aptly describes the three-piece, really. Between Mike West, Dave Anderson and Alex Maples, there is rasping and wailing. The guitar and drums are rough and scratchy. Song titles tug at the imagination — “Nicaraguan Crab Sandwich” reads like a dope-laced double entendre and “Meat Curds & Whey” elicits images of a greasy spoon entree gone way, way wrong. Musically, though, the unsigned trio makes music that goes for a mood — sometimes mellow, other times irritable. The men on the strings do an intricate, mirror image sort of tangle that plays with the notion of counterpoint. Then, on a dime, the guys start in on a jazz combo number that merges with the funky rambles of a jam session. Sounds like: Shellac took a year off to dabble in jazz and improvisation; Denton’s guitar virtuoso Ryan Thomas Becker couch surfed in the band’s rehearsal studio and some of his genes mutated and went airborne. Details: Curvette plays Hailey’s Club Aug. 7 with Monkeytown and Count Dracula’s Weed-Smuggling Jam Engine. Doors open 9 p.m. Cover is $6 for ages 21 and older, $7 for 20 and younger. All-ages show. ranian indie rock band Hypernova is playing tonight at Rubber Gloves, 411 E. Sycamore St. The band formed in Tehran, where there is a ban of all Western music on state-run airwaves, and playing rock music is considered illegal. They rocked out in their basements, taking their chances of being caught, which could’ve led to fines, arrest or flogging. In 2007 they took a bigger chance: They were accepted to perform at South by Southwest, but didn’t receive their visas in time, so they grabbed the opportunity and left for the U.S. anyway. Now based in New York, Hypernova is on a U.S. tour promoting its debut album, Through the Chaos, released in April on the Narnack Records label. Members of the band are Raam as lead vocalist, Kodi as lead guitarist, Kami as drummer and Jam on bass. The band has been featured on National Public Radio, CNN, Time and CBS News. Hypernova isn’t just a rock band from Iran. It’s a solid group of musicians with something to say. The show is open to all ages and admission is $7. The doors open at 8 p.m. — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

OPENING FRIDAY

9500 Liberty (###) Documentary filmmakers Eric Byler and Annabel Park stumbled into the middle of a heated immigration debate, and an interesting subject for their film, when they reached Prince William County, Va. A repressive, Arizona-like immigration law had been proposed, setting two sides of the community against each other — immigrants, mostly Latino, on one side, and the longtenured residents on the other. Byler and Park stay until the final votes are cast, documenting a fractious playing out of the political process. Not rated, 85 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore Cats and dogs unite to take on a nutty feline bent on global domination. With James Marsden, Nick Nolte and Christina Applegate. Rated PG, 82 minutes. — The Associated Press Dinner for Schmucks A young exec (Paul Rudd) finds the perfect buffoon (Steve Carell) for his boss’ monthly “dinner for idiots.” Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — AP The Dry Land (##1/2) It’s an important if frequently told side of the Iraq war, that of veterans returning home and struggling to rebuild their lives again. In this case, James (Ryan O’Nan) has the support of his wife (America Ferrera) and mother (Melissa Leo) in small-town Texas, but few seem to understand his emotional turmoil. The cast is strong, and the script by director Ryan Piers Williams generates some powerful moments even if its themes feel familiar. Rated R, 92 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Kisses (###) Very slight but appealing working-class drama from Ireland focuses on preteen neighbors Kylie (Kelly O’Neill) and Dylan (Shane Curry), feeling the pressures of parents who range from overbearing to abusive, who decide together to run away for one night in search of Dylan’s missing older brother. Helped by his two precocious newcomers in the lead roles, director Lance Daly crafts a fresh and gritty coming-of-age story that’s uneven but charming. Not rated, 76 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Rec 2 (##1/2) Blair Witch Project

Zac Efron and Charlie Tahan play brothers in the sappy Charlie St. Cloud.

Stuck in the surf Efron’s buoyant acting waterlogged by sudsy script By Todd Jorgenson Film Critic

A

Charlie St. Cloud Rated PG-13, 99 minutes. Opens Friday.

mong the ensemble from the High School Musical franchise, Zac Efron has always been the actor poised to break through into mainstream stardom. Besides his leading-man looks and charm, Efron has proven his depth and versatility in films such as 17 Again and Me and Orson Welles. So give Efron credit for again trying something a little different with the title role in Charlie St. Cloud, even if he can’t rescue this waterlogged melodrama. As the film opens, Efron plays an ace sailboat racer who shares a mutual admiration with his younger brother (Charlie Tahan). But when tragedy strikes their family, it hits Charlie especially hard,

causing him to give up his promising sailing career and college scholarship and retreat to the life of a recluse. Five years later, he’s working as a caretaker at the local cemetery, still haunted by guilt and grief, when a rival from his past winds up becoming the unlikely catalyst for Charlie moving on with his own life. Despite some promising technical credits, the film is let down by its sappy and predictable screenplay, which is based on a novel by Ben Sherwood. As an examination of the grieving process, it’s trite and trivial. And the story’s main twist is telegraphed well in advance.

meets Paranormal Activity in this frantic, creepy Spanish-language horror film. A group of SWAT team members invades a building where hostages are allegedly held. One member thoughtfully brings his

handheld camera, which documents the violence and the otherworldly goings-on. Effective if ultimately redundant. Excellent midnight fare. Rated R, 85 minutes. At the Inwood. — B.A.

Still, Charlie St. Cloud is directed with confidence by Burr Steers (17 Again), who combines with cinematographer Enrique Chediak (28 Weeks Later) on some visuals that both showcase the Pacific Northwest locales and make for some exciting sailboat sequences. Likewise, the acting is solid, with Efron balancing strength and vulnerability in a part that could have resorted to mere brooding. The supporting cast includes Kim Basinger, Ray Liotta and Donal Logue. That makes it all the more disappointing that the script is preoccupied with manipulating audience emotion and squeezing every last bit of sentimentality out of its threadbare premise. A little more subtlety might have allowed Charlie St. Cloud to stay afloat. TODD JORGENSON can be reached at 940-566-6871. His e-mail address is tjorgenson@ dentonrc.com.

NOW PLAYING Despicable Me (###) Crisply animated CGI comedy about an insecure supervillain (voiced by Steve

Carell) who wants to be renowned for his evil deeds, yet discovers it’s easier to walk the straight and narrow when his heart is melted by three little girls he adopts as part of a sinister plan to steal the moon and upstage an evil rival. The hip voice cast and quirky periphery characters are a plus, and while the film takes a while to find its footing, there are plenty of solid laughs to be had as long as you don’t walk in expecting the next Pixar extravaganza. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Grown Ups Childhood pals (Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and David Spade) reunite as adults. With Salma Hayek and Maria Bello. — The Associated Press Inception (###1/2) The latest mindbending thriller from visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) is about Dom (Leonardo DiCaprio), a man who specializes in the illegal practice of extraction, or stealing secrets from a person’s mind while the victim is dreaming. In what he hopes will be his last job, Dom must implant an idea in the dream of the heir to a corporation (Cillian Murphy) rather than extract it. At times, Inception threatens to collapse under the weight of its own ambition, but in a summer of sequels and retreads, the level of inspiration alone is praiseworthy. Terrific supporting cast includes Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph GordonLeavitt, Michael Caine and Tom Berenger. Rated PG-13, 148 minutes. — T.J. The Last Airbender (##) Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has adapted a popular children’s anime series with a dazzling array of special effects. It’s up to a boy named Aang (Noah Ringer) and his two sidekicks to avenge the extinction of his kingdom and bring peace to the world. As with many of his previous films, Shyamalan seems to take his subject matter too seriously, and the screenplay gets sidetracked with tedious mumbo-jumbo. Rated PG, 103 minutes. — T.J. Ramona and Beezus Based on the bestselling book by Beverly Cleary, Ramona Quimby (Joey King) is a plucky youngster with an irrepressible sense of fun and mischief — a fact that keeps her big sister, Beezus (Selena Gomez), on her toes. Ramona’s vivid imagination and boundless energy serve her well when she and Beezus must help save their family’s home. Rated G, 104 minutes. Salt (###) High-octane espionage thriller showcasing one of the physically toughest heroines we’ve seen in quite some time. Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is a CIA officer whose loyalty is brought into question during the simple interrogation of a Russian defector who accuses her of being a spy. One of her colleagues (Liev Schreiber) stands by Salt, while another (Chiwetel Ejiofor) insists she be brought in for questioning. Red herrings and clever twists can be found amid the

Nicolas Cage tones down his edgy weirdo act to kid-friendly levels as a sorcerer who employs a nerdy college student (Jay Baruchel) in an effort to save the future of Manhattan from his archrival.
