Arts mixer features music, color irst Friday Denton has music and art on tap for its monthly arts mixer. A Creative Art Studio will have its festivities from 7 to 10 p.m. The music starts with E.T. and the Dreamcatchers — Angie Holliday, Robert Chapman and Erin Thelen, all University of North Texas alumni — will present cover tunes and mashups at 7 p.m. Afterward, the Fleurettes will perform. The Denton duo features bluesy singer Alexandra Tayara and local punk musician Richard Haskins. The studio’s featured artist is mixed-media printmaker Crystal Nelson, who uses strong graphic images and expressive color. She teaches in Lewisville and shows her work in the studio. A Creative Art Studio continues the tradition of the First Friday community art project with chalk art on the sidewalk outside the studio, 227 W. Oak St. Banter Bistro will present

Lukens’ musical foray pays off in fresh, not-so-folk album

alker Lukens’ latest record, the warmly received Devoted, was born from the Austin artist’s utter exhaustion with his ride on the indie-folk train. “I got tired of the same scenario,” Lukens said as he zoomed through Grand Junction, Colorado, on tour. “I realized I’m just playing before this room full of drunk — or buzzed — people while I do this autobiographical music. You’re trying to make yourself heard and I was just kind of rolling my eyes at myself.” Lukens said he moved toward pop, well aware that it was a move that might make purists and music snobs wince. “No musician wants to play pop-rock,” he said. “You see musicians trying to avoid the whole ‘pop’ deal when they talk about their music. They’ll go, ‘I play psych rock,’ or talk about how they’re doing post-punk. I’m like, ‘Dude, you play pop-rock.’” Devoted embraces the easy musicality of pop. “Dear, Dear Someone” harkens back to Roy Orbison’s smart melodies — the whole song is singable in the best way. Sweet, swingy verses build into the kind of guitar bridge that Buddy Holly might have written for a doo-wop outfit. “Lover” shines, thanks to Lukens’ keen sense of editing. Using a vocal loop recorder, Lukens is his own percussion section with breathy, rolling R’s and a punch of exhalation. He layers a solid blues melody line over harmonies he created by singing all the harmonies in “ohs” before trailing off with a primal, wolfish wail.

Austin musician Walker Lukens returns to Denton for a show tonight at Dan’s Silverleaf. Lukens’ latest release, “Devoted,” dropped his folk style for pop music melodies and upbeat harmonies.
“Drunk Logic” is Lukens taking a page from Mick Jagger’s big book of blues-rock. He sits with the ghosts of the Delta, all while asking a wished-for lover to come to his side. Instead of imitating, Lukens just commits his white-boy pipes to the music and sings from the heart. “Kindle Your Fire (Oprah Voice)” sounds nearly African, with the
jubilant percussion and chorusstyle harmonies. Lukens said he had a different collection of music ready before he left New York (his digs before returning to Texas) touring with another band. When he finished the tour, Lukens said he scrapped that batch and turned his attention to some chords he’d been putting together. “I didn’t want to do anything that could be called folk,” he said. “I went to my part-time teaching job and wrote and recorded every day. I found an engineer that wasn’t afraid to record in an
apartment. It didn’t exactly work — you can still hear some folk elements. But I did some basic pop stuff. I wanted to have a new experience.” Lukens said he was surprised that Devoted emerged with blues and R&B elements. The vocal loop recorder — a technology that has surged in popularity — opened Lukens’ eyes to songwriting away from the guitar. He was especially delighted to discover how “human sounds” he normally didn’t think of as being musical could be turned into tones and beats. If he hadn’t
tired of the folk conventions, he might not have broached songwriting with just his voice. “I had no idea what kind of music I’d be playing,” he said. “I’ve been kind of making music on my own. It’s really exciting to me to record with a band. You can really flesh things out more with a band. You can listen to something and if you’re like, ‘Why not add strings?’ you can add them. There’s now a much more firm kind of base.”

OPENING FRIDAY Get On Up (★★★★) Chadwick Boseman, who was impressive as the dignified Jackie Robinson in 42, is electrifying as James Brown in Tate Taylor’s new biopic. And just as Brown, in life, upstaged pretty much everyone — including his bandmates, the Famous Flames — Boseman does that here. Tate and talented screenwriters Jez Butterworth and JohnHenry Butterworth jump around in time, ditching chronology for a thematic approach. It can get confusing, but it keeps us on our toes. In the end, we have a portrait that is not uniformly positive — Brown was too complicated for that — yet falls mostly on the kinder side. With Dan Akyroyd, Viola Davis and Nelsan Ellis. Rated PG-13, 138 minutes. — The Associated Press Guardians of the Galaxy (★★1⁄2) This 3-D space opera is Marvel’s most irreverent film yet, and has a welcome, slightly self-mocking tone. The problem with Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn (Super), is the weakness of the comedy it wears so proudly. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a Han Solo-like scavenger who stumbles across a silver orb also sought by some evil forces: Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and his boss, Thanos (Josh Brolin). The resulting scrum for the orb introduces several more seekers: the green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), the hulking Drax (Dave Bautista), a bitterly sardonic raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and his sidekick, a talking tree called Groot (Vin Diesel). The warm spirit of Guardians owes much to Pratt, the guileless, formerly doughy Parks and Recreation star; his casting in inspired. But the film is terribly overstuffed and many of the jokes get drowned out by the special effects. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — AP

Hailee Stanfield plays Dan’s daughter and Catherine Keener his ex-wife, while Adam Levine appears as Greta’s erratic boyfriend. — Boo Allen Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (★★★1⁄2) Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) delivers a thematically and textually dark follow-up to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Outside a bleak and barely recognizable San Francisco, apes thrive, led by Caesar (Andy Serkis). Humans (including Jason Clarke and Keri Russell) encroach, setting off the inevitable conflict. Good mix of effects, imaging and atmospherics. Rated PG-13, 130 minutes. — B.A. Hercules The mythical Greek hero Hercules leads a band of mercenaries to help end a bloody civil war in the land of Thrace and return the rightful king to his throne. When Hiccup and his girlfriend Astrid (America Ferrera) discover a vicious villain (Djimon Hounsou) who’s building a dragon army, Hiccup resolves to stop him. Rated PG, 102 minutes. — AP
Lucy (★★1⁄2) Lucy, a student of some sort living in Taiwan, and a few other unfortunates are forced to become drug mules, doomed to fly to Europe with packages implanted in their stomachs. Roughed up by thugs, Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) suffers blows to the abdomen, and the drug starts leaking into her system — enhancing her brain capacity and leaving her with only 24 hours to live. She heads to Paris to meet Professor Norman,
an expert on cerebral capacity (Morgan Freeman), and simultaneously, she’s trying to recover all the drug packets, with the help of a police detective (Amr Waked). And this is where it gets really weird. At a certain point, the best strategy may be to just sit back, listen to the pounding music, admire those bright colors, and just shut that brain down

But the dialogue often sounds hammy and clunky. — AP Maleficent (★★★) It takes talent to walk around in a black leather-horned cap and not look silly. Angelina Jolie turns in a magnificent performance in Maleficent as the (now we are told) misunderstood villain of Sleeping Beauty. Jolie rules this film with a powerful acting grace accented by director Robert Stromberg’s film style that shifts from film noir to children’s comedy without a flinch. There’s just not enough fleshing out of the story to support these elements. As is, the film is fun but not memorable. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — The Fresno Bee A Most Wanted Man (★★★1⁄2) In one of his last film appearances, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a German intelligence official out to trap a possible terrorist. Anton Corbijn directs, from Andrew Bovell’s script of a John Le Carre novel, slowly building a portrait of a dedicated and determined man at work. Rachel McAdams plays a dedicated human rights lawyer, and Willem Dafoe appears as a corrupt banker. — B.A. Planes: Fire & Rescue In this animated movie set in a world of anthropomorphic aircraft, a famous air racer learns that his engine is damaged and shifts gears into the world of aerial firefighting. Rated PG, 83 minutes. — LAT The Purge: Anarchy A new group of individuals fights to survive the annual night on which all crime is legal for 12 hours in this sequel to the 2013 film The Purge. Rated R, 103 minutes. — LAT Sex Tape To spice up their love life, a couple of 10 years makes a marathon sex tape and then scrambles to erase it from existence after they accidentally send it to friends and family members. e need our illusions to live, or so says the main character in Magic in the Moonlight, Woody Allen’s clever new release. The romantic comedy is set in the south of France in 1928, and, although it is beguiling, charming, thoughtful and even challenging, it is neither overtly romantic nor terribly funny. Magic works on several levels, and it is obvious Allen wants it that way. On its surface, it may be the story of magician Stanley (Colin Firth) setting out to debunk the claims of a young psychic, Sophie (Emma Stone). Underneath, Allen examines many of the themes that have forever perplexed him. Stanley is the ultimate skep-

tic. He has been fooling his audiences long enough to know it’s all gimmickry, easily performed because audiences want to be fooled. He reads Nietzsche and believes in science but does not believe in a higher power, an afterlife, souls or spirits, and likes to ridicule anyone who does. He answers the call of a friend, Howard (Simon McBurney), who has encountered the allegedly clairvoyant Sophie. Howard believes her powers may be genuine. When the caustic Stanley meets Sophie, the source of the film’s eventual small amount of romance quickly becomes apparent despite the 28-year age difference between Firth and Stone. Before reaching that anticlimax, however, Allen traffics in his own misdirection, encouraging his audience to believe in

Sophie’s powers while Stanley becomes so enchanted with her that he admits he hopes her powers prove genuine because he has never been so happy. Contentment can only be found when deluded, however that form may come. If true, both for Stanley and for Woody Allen, the world becomes a different, maybe even better place. Or, as one character puts it, “The world may be without purpose, but it is not without magic.” Through Stanley, Allen ac-
knowledges his well-known skepticism, but he might also be saying that those with stronger beliefs and a security in those beliefs might be better off. Ace cinematographer Darius Khondji supplies the film’s soft palette, which takes advantage of the Riviera’s lush landscapes. For his background scores, Allen supplements his usual menu of vintage jazz with a smattering of classical numbers. And as usual, he has assembled a strong supporting cast with competent performances from Eileen Atkins as Stanley’s aunt, Hamish Linklater as Sophie’s amorous conquest, and Marcia Gay Harden as Sophie’s mom. Father and daughter divvy up directing duties for pair of plays

elanie Welch grew up in the Campus Theatre. As a tot, she played the title role in the company’s production of The Littlest Angel. Her mother, Kyla Welch, has performed in Denton Community Theatre shows and works in the Campus Theatre box office. Her dad, Dennis, has been in dozens of shows for a handful of North Texas theater companies and has directed for the local community theater.

Melanie Welch is making her Denton Community Theatre directorial debut this weekend, joining her father in the company’s staging of Twice Around the Park. Dennis Welch said he pitched the play to the company for its season in the PointBank Black Box Theatre as a two-director project. His pitch was that he and and another director would each direct one of the two one-act comedies in Twice Around the Park — a pair of one-act plays by Murray Schisgal. “I admired the playwright when I was back in college,” Dennis Welch said of
Schisgal, who wrote A Need for Brussels Sprouts for the late Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson. “He’s not very well known, even though he’s had a few big Broadway shows. He wrote Luv for Alan Arkin and Eli Wallach. He wrote Jimmy Shine for Dustin Hoffman. I want more people to know this playwright.” Dennis Welch said it occurred to him to invite Melanie to consider the play. “I asked her to read the script,” he said. “I thought it would be interesting to see See TWICE on 10

Twice what she’d think about it, and I thought it would be a good way for her to get experience directing for DCT, in the event she might want to direct again.” Melanie Welch didn’t need to think twice about the offer to direct for the company. She directed a cutting of The Laramie Project for her senior project at Texas Woman’s University, and directed the short play she wrote, Shades of Gray (“Not to be confused with Fifty Shades of Gray, please,” she says) with Fight Boy Theatre. “It’s fairly natural for me,” Melanie Welch said. “I’ve grown up around this. I’ve worked lights, I’ve been stage manager — I’ve never worked sound. I’m a very visual person. I like to draw. I like to be in control. And I love the casting process. the one-act she wanted to direct. She chose A Need for Brussels Sprouts. Brussels Sprouts is about an out-of-work actor, Leon Rose, who tends to disturb his upstairs neighbor, Margaret Heinz, with loud opera music he’s studying for an audition. What Leon doesn’t know is that Margaret is a New York City police officer. She means to silence his music
by legal summons, as her rapping on the floor hasn’t worked. But when the two start talking, they realize their have some of the same things in common — stressful jobs, a growing list of demands and a touch of real loneliness. Affections arise. Dennis Welch said he gladly took on A Need for Less Expertise. The play finds New York City couple Edie and Gus Frazier adrift after two decades of marriage. Edie insists the couple follow the absurd instructions of Dr. Oliovsky, the voice behind an audio program teaching couples about Tantric sex. Edie’s endless quest for professional relationship help collides with Gus’ doit-yourself attitude. Both directors said the project benefits from the actors. David Johnson returns to the Denton stage as Leon, and Melanie Welch said he was just the ticket. “As soon as he read, I was like: That’s Leon,” she said. Ash Robbins had previously told Melanie she was interested in playing Margaret. When the
actresses who auditioned didn’t fit the bill, the director said she called Robbins to recruit her. Real-life Denton couple Julie Brinker and Damon Wadyko play Edie and Gus in Less Expertise. Brinker is a theater professor and community outreach director for Denton Community Theatre. Wadyko is a familiar face on the Denton stage and host of Beyond the Fourth Wall on DentonRadio.com The Welches said they both find negotiating with performers harder than creating pictures on the stage. “It’s definitely harder for me to communicate with the actors. I’m such a visual person that sometimes, it’s hard for me to put what I want into words,” Melanie Welch said. “Ash and David have been really patient with me.” “I know what she’s talking about,” Dennis Welch said. “I’m a performer first. I’m not a great director. I have to work at it. But if you have a good cast, the right people, that’s 70 percent of your
job right there.” The father-daughter team haven’t seen much of each other’s work in Twice Around the Park. It’s for the best, each said. They don’t want to influence one another, Dennis Welch said, and he doesn’t want his daughter to feel like she’d have to act on any of his advice. Melanie said she opted to direct Brussels Sprouts because she related to Leon and Margaret. “When I read A Need for Less Expertise, it seemed depressing,” she said. Under Dennis’ direction, and in Brinker and Wadyko’s intuitive, experienced hands, Less Expertise is plenty funny — sometimes stingingly so.
