13 How to make solar energy work for you (hint, hint – it’s easier and cheaper than ever)

expectancy of qualified solar water heating systems averages 20 years, longer than gas or electric storage water heaters.
As summer temperatures sizzle, many seek relief from the sun. Few homeowners, however, put the sun to work for them, making for cooler homes and lower electrical bills. From passive solar design to more recent innovations, incorporating solar energy in the home is easier than ever. Extended tax breaks have made these upgrades more affordable and have helped spur a burgeoning “green” job market. “Solar energy has become a small business and jobs engine,” says Monique Hanis, director of communications for the Washington, D.C.based Solar Energy Industries Association. “The industry grew 37 percent last year. For the consumer, the benefit is more competition.” Other benefits are tax credits. “The federal government offers a 30-percent tax credit to taxpayers who install residential solar panels or water heaters, extended to 2016, with no cap,” Hanis says. You can also find information on your state’s solar incentives from www.dsireusa.org, the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency. And, of course, there’s the environmental impact. “Solar energy is clean, renewable – unlike gas, oil and coal – and does not contribute to climate change, acid rain or smog,” says Anca Novacovici, president of Eco Coach, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based consulting company. “It does not pollute our air by releasing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide or mercury into the atmosphere like many traditional forms of electrical generation do.” SOLAR PANELS Roof-mounted solar panels, or photovoltaic systems,

The systems are more compact, efficient and aesthetically pleasing than they once were. “Some are elegant all-black panels designed to blend into architecture, not stand out from it,” Novacovici says. “There are many types of installations. Trellis-mounted systems are a popular choice, providing additional shade to patios or other living spaces while remaining less visible than some other mounting options.” New tracking technology enables solar panels to collect more sunlight, which translates to smaller electricity bills. “A kilowatt tracking system, which is a solar array that follows the sun throughout the day, is 35 percent more efficient than an identical stationary system,”
Novacovici says. How much of a system do you need to power your home? A 2.5 kilowatt system mounted on the roof is usually enough for a family, she says. Solar electricity costs about $10 to $12 per watt installed, depending on the contractor and company used and any incentives. The amount of energy a homeowner can save by installing solar panels varies, depending on location, size of system and household use of energy. “That said, one can say that typical residential PV systems offset 25 percent to 50 percent of electricity use,” Harris says SOLAR WATER HEATERS According to the U.S. Department of Energy, an Energy Star-qualified solar water heating system can cut
a household’s annual hot water cost in half. Solar combined with a backup gas-storage water heater can save $190 in electricity bills; the savings go up to $250 annually with an electric tank water heater back-up. Savings are even more for large families with greater hot water needs. The average cost of a solar hot water system for a typical home ranges from $4,000 to $11,000, Hanis says, depending on the type of system. Thanks to federal tax credits, a solar system can take less than 10 years to pay for itself. It also pays off for the environment. An Energy Star-qualified solar water heater will prevent 4,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year, which is equivalent to not driving a car for four months. The life
PASSIVE SOLAR Passive solar systems include orientation of the house to take the best advantage of the sun, says Sheri Koones, the Greenwich, Conn.-based author of “Prefabulous + Sustainable: Building and Customizing an Affordable, Energy Efficient Home” (Abrams, 2010). Koones says this includes the “use of overhangs to deflect the sun in the warm months and allow the sun into the house in the colder months, the placement of windows and the use of concrete flooring to absorb or emit heat and cool air as needed.” Passive solar is best implemented with the help of an architect or other residential building expert, who may also suggest adding daylighting techniques, such as Solatubes, skylights and clerestory windows to a home. SOLAR LIGHTING Smaller scale solar lighting has come into – or rather, outside – the home. Many home decorating retailers, garden shops and even hardware stores now sell the popular outdoor solar walkway lights for as little as $3 each, capturing the sun’s light and converting it to electricity. A solar powered porch light typically costs less than $50, Novacovici says, and a garden path light ranges from $30 to $100. “Solar LED lights are becoming more prevalent and less expensive,” she says. “This Old House” veteran Richard Trethewey knows a great outdoor shower when he sees one. And the plumbing and heating expert has no qualms about borrowing an inspired design – consider it sharing inspiration. “I borrowed the design for an outdoor shower on my home from one I saw in Buck’s Harbor, Maine,” he says. “The construction of the shower in Maine came just high enough to cover the necessary body parts but left the head exposed so you could see the ocean and the sun rise or set, depending on time of day. It was spectacular.” With the economy as it is, homeowners might be thinking that this kind of inspiration could be hard to come by, but out-of-the-home shower experiences are just hitting their stride. “Historically, the outdoor shower consisted of two pipes that connected to one spout, and you were lucky enough to get a decent temperature as the water trickled out,” Trethewey explains. But as technology improves indoors, perks to bathing al fresco arrive on the scene. While Trethewey notes progressive plumbing upgrades, the look and designs of outdoor showers also get a modern makeover. “Since 2007, the aspiration of the McMansion has been replaced with making use of current, existing homes by integrating interiors with the outdoors,” says Diana Schrage, senior interior designer at Kohler, Wis.based Kohler.
Some clients install outdoor showers to accompany a pool, explains Alan W. Zielinski, the 2010 vice president of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. “However, we are seeing a lot of outdoor showers that are integrated into the master bedroom suite with a private Zen-like garden. The shower heads for outdoor showers have a much finer spray that creates a softer effect. When designing an outdoor shower, it’s important to chose materials that complement warmth and serenity for a natural and relaxing experience that takes you away from the stresses of everyday life.” Topping off the feel of the flow, Kohler has a partnership with Baltimore-based Polk Audio to create SoundTiles. “The significance of the shower has expanded for consumers and this musical feature makes bathing phenomenal,” Schrage says. “Today’s technology can produce a low flow body spray that is absolutely velvety while using substantially less water.” Think beyond body bathing and make sure you have an exit path for excess water. Avoid a slippery mess by building a base for bathers to stand on that allows water to drain. Install handrails to make the shower userfriendly for all ages. Opt for lever handles to add a degree of ease to the operation. And go green by looking for the Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense logo to ensure eco-friendly plumbing. © CTW Features
