Wes Cantrell, center, stars as Conrad Birdie, the distinctly Elvis-like entertainer at the center of Bye Bye Birdie. Denton Community Theatre’s production of the rock ’n’ roll musical opens Friday night at the Campus Theatre.

Hello to a simpler age Small town aflutter over teen pop idol in ‘Bye Bye Birdie’

T

his weekend, Denton Community Theatre revives Bye Bye Birdie, a 1960 musical comedy that offers a taste of a different time. It’s 1958, and teen idol Conrad Birdie (Wes Cantrell) is about to be drafted into the Army, and a huge publicity campaign has been planned for him to give “one last kiss” to a lucky girl on The Ed Sullivan Show before shipping out.

EVENTS THURSDAY 9 a.m. — Crafters’ Corner at Emily Fowler Central Library, 502 Oakland St. Work on projects and learn new

Agent and songwriter Albert (Michael Pricer), his girlfriend/secretary (Jennifer Ehrhart) and an overbearing mother help turn a small Ohio town upside down in this comical story. The lucky teenage girl, Kim McAfee (Hannah Lane) of Sweet Apple, Ohio, has a jealous boyfriend and a father who’s not happy about a public kiss — unless, of course, the whole family can get on the show. Inspired by the phenomenon of Elvis Presley and the publicity generated by his draft notice, the show includes

favorite numbers such as “Put on a Happy Face,” “One Last Kiss” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do.” And for some, the 1963 movie featuring Dick Van Dyke, Ann-Margret and Janet Leigh may ring a few familiar notes. Denton Community Theatre’s production is directed by Sharon Veselic, with music direction by Ray Staniszewski and choreography by Eddie Floresca. Bye Bye Birdie opens on Friday night and runs for three weekends.

isitors to First Friday Denton at A Creative Art Studio will see something new and different this month. Adding a twist to its artistic offerings, the studio is offering the young artists in its summer children’s classes an opportunity to showcase their creations, which include mosaics, watercolors and clay works. The evening, which runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the studio, will feature the music of Rachel Yeatts, a local singersongwriter who teaches writing and literature at the University of North Texas. Yeatts describes her work as starting the seeds of artistic expression. And, back by popular demand, the studio’s community art project this Friday will focus on weaving. Patrons can participate in a hands-on weaving project and see the ease of setting up a loom using recycled items. Local artists will showcase techniques from their upcoming classes and workshops. Crystal Nelson, an art teacher in the Lewisville school district, will demonstrate techniques that she’ll cover in her new workshop, “Printmaking Without a Press.” In addition, Linka Behn will demonstrate some of her favorite mediums from her three upcoming classes at the studio, and Kerry Boutell will teach watercolor batik techniques. rooklyn duo Cinema, Cinema keeps listeners guessing. Ev Gold and Paul Claro’s wild guitars and primal drums and lyrics tend toward the experimental. Leading off their EP Shoot the Freak, the abrasive “Lady Abortion” is apparently designed to rile — the sole lyrics address the title character, asking “Why you look so good?/Why can’t I have you on a plate?/Just to hold and to love and all the rest of that stuff.” Then there’s “Pleased to Meet You, Anesthesia,” an ode to numbness awash in psychedelic guitar work. Riverboat Gamblers to invade and conquer in support of punk ‘Smash/Grab’ By Megan Radke | For the Denton Record-Chronicle

ith their new EP Smash/Grab under their belts, Austin’s Riverboat Gamblers have taken to the road for a nationwide tour that kicked off in San Diego and will close in Las Vegas in early September.

Recorded in Dallas with the help of producer Stuart Sikes, who’s previously worked with acts such as Cat Power and the White Stripes, the Gamblers say that Smash/Grab was put together quickly, but is being very well received.

“We spent a lot more time doing preproduction stuff,” guitarist Ian MacDougall said. “We recorded it in a weekend, which was a lot of fun.”

MacDougall said that the fast-paced recording of Smash/Grab kept band members from overthinking their new material. The four-song CD on the label Paper + Plastick is the band’s first release since 2008’s Underneath the Owl on Volcom. See GAMBLERS on 10

Dragging its knuckles

Effects fail to impress in clumsy, silly ‘Apes’ reboot

By Boo Allen Film Critic

R

ise of the Planet of the Apes proves the theory of evolution, but in reverse. Instead of gradually progressing over time, say, since 1968 and the original Planet of the Apes, Hollywood has grown progressively dumber, still depending on Pierre Boulle’s original French novel for some sort of inspiration for yet another schlocky, effects-riddled slice of late summer silliness. In this seventh variation of an Apes film (not including the TV series and kids’ cartoon show), Rise naturally updates the science. The script from Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa features failed genetic experiments in an attempt to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. But then heavyhanded director Rupert Wyatt takes the thin material and turns it into a plodding, often morose, faux morality tale. A wide-mouthed, perpetually perplexed James Franco plays Will Rodman, who works in a San Francisco research facility searching for an Alzheimer’s cure — hoping, in particular, to help his afflicted father (John Lithgow). When a promising experiment with chimps goes bad, Will takes home a baby chimp to save it from being destroyed. The chimp, named Caesar,

Gamblers Vocalist Mike Wiebe, a Denton native, said that the band played with different ideas on Smash/Grab. Those ideas and the new songs have helped the band develop a diverse set list that keeps both the crowd and the performers engaged. “Everyone has been super positive,” Wiebe said. “We often stick to same set list every night, but sometimes we’ll have a few rotating slots, change up a few things, just to keep us on

our toes.” Despite calling Austin home, the band can’t deny its roots in Denton and North Texas. The Gamblers, known for their raucous live shows, will soon make their way back home, playing

mischievous, lively and intelligent. Will recognizes the effects of his drugs and gives his father the same treatment, miraculously bringing pop back from dementia, much the same way Robin Williams did for Robert DeNiro in Awakenings. And, like in that film, conditions eventually reverse, sending poppa Rodman, and Caesar, into dark places. Caesar, played by Andy Serkis in a performance-capture suit, lands in a grim animal sanctu-

ary. There, he orchestrates the chaotic third-act rebellion that drives the film from some sort of cautionary tale to a humanape showdown complemented by a barrage of special effects ranging from cheesy to impressive. Despite the advances of performance-capture technology, the chimps never look real but simply creepy. They scurry along the ground not like chimps, but like animated versions of chimps. Director Wyatt

clumsily handles several apesonly scenes, as they look unintentionally comical rather than the intended menacing or introspective. Still, despite the film’s wild variations, Rise does provide captivating vistas of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco area. And, for her part as Will Rodman’s girlfriend, Freida Pinto superlatively performs her acting assignment of standing around and looking pretty.

Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Aug. 28. “I love playing Denton,” Wiebe said. “We played our first show ever at Rubber Gloves. “When we used to play around town, we would know everyone at the show,” he said. “Now, we get a different crowd. It’s always awesome coming back.” Jennifer Hensel, a former Denton resident, has seen Riverboat Gamblers live many times and says that their shows always make for a good time. “Their shows are so much fun,” Hensel said. “The crowd is so into it; you can just tell how

loyal their fans are. They all have so much energy. “The band and the crowd just seem to feed off one another.” When asked about the growth of Denton, as well as its music scene, Wiebe said he’s noticed how the city’s changing for the better. “I love what’s happening on the Square now,” he said. “I was kind of worried with the whole destroying Fry Street thing, but it seems like adaptation is happening.” Wiebe said that growing up in Denton influenced the band greatly. Playing house shows

with other local bands such as the Marked Men, and meeting bands from out of town, is what led the Gamblers to begin entertaining the idea of touring. Since then, the band has toured the United States many times and taken its brand of punk rock to Europe and Australia. McDougall said that the band hopes to play shows throughout Japan in the future. The first leg of the current Riverboat Gamblers tour with Off With Their Heads wrapped up in Cleveland on July 30, before the tour picks up again in Houston on Aug. 26.

OPENING FRIDAY

Another Earth (##) In this tepid science-fiction film with limited special effects, a second planet Earth is headed this way — and it is the duplicate of everything here. A young woman (future star Brit Marling, who also co-scripted) leaves prison after serving time for accidentally killing someone in an auto accident. Her strange, and unbelievable, efforts to make amends to a bereaved man (William Mapother) serve somehow as the eventual hokey connection between the two worlds. Slow and uninvolving. Rated PG-13, 92 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — Boo Allen The Change-Up (##1/2) Best friends Dave (Jason Bateman), a successful Atlanta lawyer who’s married with three kids, and Mitch (Ryan Reynolds), a defiantly single womanizer, each insists the other guy has the better life. After too many drinks one night, they wake up the next morning and poof! they’ve switched bodies, which leads to some predictable but amusingly executed fishout-of-water scenarios. This overlong film from director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) is all over the place in tone, veering awkwardly from some daring comic moments to feel-good sappiness and back again in hopes of redeeming some semblance of edginess. Rated R, 112 minutes. — The Associated Press The Devil’s Double In 1987, an Iraqi army lieutenant (Dominic Cooper) summoned to Baghdad is plunged into danger and extravagance when he serves as Uday Hussein’s (also Cooper) body double. With Ludivine Sagnier. Written by Michael Thomas and Latif Yahia. Directed by Lee Tamahori. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. Rated R, 108 minutes. — Los Angeles Times General Orders No. 9 Hovering somewhere between a documentary and an avant garde art installation, this film festival darling tells the story of the toil wrought by progress in the American South. Not rated, 72 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. Viva Riva Congolese writer and director Djo Tunda Wa Munga opens the film in Kinshasa amid the bedlam of a fuel shortage, with the story swirling around Riva (Patsha Bay Mukuna), a thief newly arrived from Angola with a truckload of hijacked gas. Riva’s criminal and sexual proclivities get him noticed — and targeted — by a local crime lord and his former boss, an Angolan gangster.

Universal Pictures

Jason Bateman, left, and Ryan Reynolds co-star as two guys whose drunken wish results in them switching bodies in The Change-Up.

Fox Searchlight

Brit Marling plays Rhoda Williams, a woman trying to make amends after she’s released from jail, in Another Earth. Rated R, 96 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas.

NOW PLAYING Bad Teacher A foul-mouthed teacher (Cameron Diaz) ill-suited to her job begins plotting to secure her meal ticket. With Justin Timberlake, Lucy Punch and Jason Segel. Written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (Year One). Rated R, 89 minutes. — LAT Bridesmaids (###) Broad but amusing Judd Apatow comedy from director Paul Feig (Unaccompanied Minors) about an impending wedding in which a neurotic maid of honor (Kristen Wiig) threatens her friendship with the bride (Maya Rudolph) because she can’t get along with her fellow bridesmaids. It’s too obnoxious and overlong at times, yet Wiig provides some big laughs in a breakthrough performance that headlines an appealing ensemble cast. Rated R, 125 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Captain America: The First Avenger (###) The last Marvel Comics setup for next summer’s all-star blockbuster The Avengers

finds Chris Evans starring as the World War II fighting hero. Evans brings an earnest dignity and intelligence to the role of Steve Rogers, a scrawny kid from Brooklyn with dreams of military glory. But scientist Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) sees something special in him and enlists him for a daring experiment. Hugo Weaving plays the former Nazi leader Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. Red Skull, who’s formed his own splinter group and built some intimidating weapons. Director Joe Johnston’s film feels weighty and substantial, even in 3D, and it has a beautiful, sepiatoned, art-deco look about it. Rated PG-13, 126 minutes. — AP Cowboys and Aliens (###1/2) Daniel Craig stars as a disoriented cowboy in the Old West who joins forces with a local honcho (Harrison Ford) to fight off an attack of aliens. Director Jon Favreau takes his job seriously and, except for small doses of black humor, does his best to mix the two genres. With Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde and Paul Dano. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — B.A.

Crazy Stupid Love (##1/2) Steve Carell stars as Cal, a nebbishy 40something whose high school sweetheart, Emily (Julianne Moore), announces that she’s slept with someone else and wants a divorce. Cal finds an unlikely mentor in Jacob (Ryan Gosling), an expensively dressed womanizer who gives him a makeover. Gosling has a great, flirty chemistry with Emma Stone as the one woman who sees through his game. But for a movie that intends to be rooted in a recognizable and insightful reality, this features an awful lot of moments that clang in a contrived, feel-good manner. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — AP Friends With Benefits Two platonic friends (Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis) find that sex complicates their relationship. With Patricia Clarkson and Jenna Elfman. Written by Keith Merryman, David A. Newman and Will Gluck. Directed by Will Gluck (Easy A). Rated R, 104 minutes. — LAT Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (####) Director David Yates propels Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) through the task of finding the last three horcruxes, magical objects containing the final pieces of Lord Voldemort’s soul. The Boy Who Lived has a final stand-off with He Who Must Not Be Named, and the magical world hangs in the balance. With Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon. Rated PG-13, 180 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding Horrible Bosses (##1/2) An amusing premise doesn’t have much of a payoff in this low-brow comedy about three hard-working buddies who each hate their jobs because of their, you know, see title. So they devise a clumsy scheme to deliver a harsh comeuppance. There are a few big laughs, even if the script isn’t edgy enough and lacks any connection to reality. It coasts on the appeal of its stars (Jason

Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day), as well as a slew of cameo appearances. Rated R, 97 minutes. — T.J. Larry Crowne (##) The considerable talent and charm of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts makes their sentimental misfire all the more disappointing. Hanks directed and cowrote this cutesy romantic comedy about man who looks to reinvent his life after being laid off. He heads back to college, where he falls for a teacher trying to escape an empty marriage. It’s all breezy and pleasant, and a mild relief amid a summer of retreads, but the characters lack chemistry and conviction. Rated PG13, 98 minutes. — T.J. Midnight in Paris (####) In his 41st feature, the 75-year-old Woody Allen shows a still playful imagination with his story of a blocked writer (Owen Wilson) and his fiancee (Rachel McAdams) on a visit to Paris. Several times, when he strolls alone after midnight, he enters a strange time warp, sending him back to Paris of the 1920s, thereby enabling him to mingle with Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and his mistress (Marion Cotillard), and even receives help from Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates) on his novel. Whimsical and funny, with plenty to say, particularly that life is short but art is immortal. Rated PG13, 100 minutes. — B.A. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (##1/2) Director Michael Bay delivers more of the same in the ongoing saga of the battle between the good Autobots and the bad Decepticons. Shia LaBeouf again plays save-theday Sam Witwicky and newby Rosie Huntington-Whiteley plays the obligatory arm candy. Ehren Kruger’s script allows for multiple battles and faceoffs, all while rewriting history with a smile. Rated PG-13, 154 minutes. — B.A. Winnie the Pooh (####) This film is the ideal alternative to all those big, shiny, effects-laden spectacles that tend to dominate during the summer — animated or otherwise. It’s 68 minutes of pure, hunnycovered satisfaction. Given the source material — A.A. Milne’s enduring writing for children — Winnie the Pooh is naturally geared toward the little ones, with its cuddly characters and pleasingly soft watercolor strokes, but not at the expense of adults’ enjoyment. Quite the contrary: Grown-ups may find themselves even more engaged by it and perhaps even moved to tears. Rated G, 68 minutes. — AP The Smurfs The tiny blue creatures are chased by the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) into New York City and must return home. With Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays and the voices of Anton Yelchin and Katy Perry. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — LAT Zookeeper (##1/2) Kevin James plays the title character, a Boston zookeeper who talks to animals, and, more disconcerting, receives relationship advice from them. Director Frank Coraci (The Wedding Singer) uses his star’s willingness to try anything for a laugh and does. Broad, silly comedy should at least please youngsters. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — B.A.
