The return of the King Free concert features pretender to the throne of rock ’n’ roll

lvis returns to Denton’s downtown Square on Saturday complete with a motorcade for an annual event benefiting the Denton Kiwanis Children’s Clinic.

In a free Elvis Presley tribute concert, Joe Fritz brings back the jazzy blues tunes of a bygone era, like “Love Me Tender” and “Hound Dog,” and rock ’n’ roll numbers. Thad Bonduris and the Fun Addix will perform at 7:30 p.m. in front of the Courthouse on the Square, with Fritz in full Elvis

regalia at 8:30 p.m. Donations for the children’s clinic will be accepted.

Fritz, who owns an insurance agency in Denton, says he remembers singing along to Elvis tunes as a youngster while listening to his mother’s records.

Later, he sang at fraternity gatherings and decided several years ago to use that skill to help benefit local charities.

Major sponsors of Saturday’s event include Farmers Insurance, the Denton RecordChronicle, Kiwanis Interna-

tional, Denton South Rotary Club, Bill Utter Ford, Street Art Signs and Caliber Collision Centers.

A $30 progressive dinner will begin at 5 p.m. at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. The dinner includes a stop at Dan’s Silverleaf with Fritz and Rivers West performing an acoustic set in the style of Presley’s 1968 comeback special.

The musical by Michael Stewart, Charles Strouse and Lee Adams is both a light-hearted tribute to teen idols — with Conrad Birdie (Wes Cantrell) awarding “one last kiss” to a female fan, Kim (Hannah Lane), before heading off into the service — and a look at more mature romance as Birdie’s manager, Albert (Michael Pricer), considers committing to his fiancee, Rosie (Jennifer Ehrhart). A fling with darkness Trebuchet brings anger, heat to Dan’s on Friday

o what if Denton’s Trebuchet has a flair for the dramatic? The local five-piece can carry off the anger-stained rock it deals in — both because the musicians write and perform with conviction, and because the band blends smart sounds with compelling lyrics.

Trebuchet plays Dan’s Silverleaf on Friday night with Dallas’ Descender and Magnet School. Warm up those neck muscles; some head-banging is entirely possible, though not with the force or verve of Angus

Trebuchet is known for its prog-metal sound, but the band doesn’t shy away from creating a variation on a more classical theme, as in “Left in E Flat,” when the band lets things get a little softer around the edges.

Moody percussion and guitar play a game of chase in songs like “Waffles and Pancakes” (from 2009’s double CD Bear and the Moon) and then saunter across a steaming asphalt street in the twangy blues number “Clocktower Blues.” The guitar work in “Single File” evokes the percussive notes of Tom Morello’s style, circa

eryl Dodd was starting to comb through songs for a greatest hits record. The country singer-songwriter, who’s been making his

own albums since 1995, had a bucketful of anthems he could have anthologized, made for Sony and Columbia during the height of his career: “Pearl Snaps,” “Movin’ Out to the Country,” “That’s How I Got to Memphis.”

But then Joy died, and he changed his mind.

“Joy and her husband and her family would come to all my shows,” Dodd said. “The spirit heart in me — I’m a spiritual person — just connected with her.”

When the Dallas native found out Joy had been diagnosed with cancer, he knew he could offer his steadfast fan something richer than sympathy. He privately recorded a song called “I Can Do This” with just raw vocals and guitar and sent it to Joy and her family.

“This album was harder to make than any one I’ve ever done,” Dodd said. “Back when I was growing up, all the records I bought, it was who those artists were. You didn’t have videos, the way you knew about them was from that album.

They were defined by being undefined.”

“I Can Do This” was a ballad Dodd had never laid down in the studio, one he wrote when his central nervous system was being ravaged by viral encephalitis. Dodd said he doesn’t like or have to know everything about the musicians he loves, but many of his fans know about his health struggles — he was benched in the Nashville game after he put out two records for Columbia.

So this exchange with Joy was a mutual boost, Dodd said.

He admitted he often isn’t sure if music is still his calling. But he knew he was in the right place when, as her condition worsened, Joy told the MakeA-Wish Foundation she hoped to see Dodd and his band perform.

“On the way out there she almost canceled, this whole band of 25 people get in this limo to turn around. We met them in a parking lot, all her friends, and I walked over and sat with her. She was real frail,” he said. “Her friends were being funny and they were filming us.”

Do This” in that parking lot off of Interstate 35W. Dodd got an e-mail from Joy’s husband saying that they stayed up all night watching the films, laughing together. The next day, Joy didn’t wake up.

So Dodd decided some of the songs he hadn’t released were ones he did want to offer fans, even if they didn’t fit together in any traditional way. Random sees the formulaic honky-tonk single “Baby, Where’s My Bottle?” up against Tom Pettyinspired instrumentals on songs like “Fallin’.” Make no mistake, John Deere is namechecked and there’s no shortage of literal Texas country narrative. But for Dodd’s fans — and maybe, most importantly, for Dodd — some contradictions are just fine.

“I have a lot of faith,” he said.

“I know who’s in control. I’m just a peon vessel; I want to be used.”

But for a movie that intends to be rooted in a recognizable and insightful reality, this features an awful lot of moments that clang in a contrived, feel-good manner. Good ‘Help’ hard to find Too many subplots weigh down strong cast, rich story he Help has good intentions. In fact, it has too many of them.

It’s easy to see that the main theme of the movie is the pernicious effect of racism in general, and, specifically in early 1960s Jackson, Miss. Taking aim at the racism found in that time and place would seem an easy target. And it is.

The film is written and directed by Tate Taylor from Kathryn Stockett’s novel.

Taylor hits all the obvious racist touchstones in painting his portrait of how cruelly the local white people treated black men and women in the Jim

Crow-era South. Every white person in town (except one, and then two) is violent, casually throws around racial epithets, belittles all black people to their face, and generally behaves abominably. It’s easy to find someone to dislike in The Help.

Taylor struggles to concentrate his story. He begins with Aibileen (Viola Davis), a maid who silently resents her life of raising white children while neglecting her own. Taylor then focuses on Skeeter (Emma Stone), a recent college graduate who eventually convinces

many of the maids to tell their stories of abuse, which end up as The Help, a best-selling tellall that scandalizes the town.

But before reaching that point, Taylor attempts to weave his surplus of subplots, mostly involving the town’s Southern belle clique that sees no irony in having a fundraiser to help African children while abusing their own black employees.

These women of society, headed by the ludicrous Hilly (Bryce Dallas Howard), would be uniformly despicable if they were not painted in such broad strokes.

Even conceding the obvious 1960s Mississippi white-racist stereotypes, these women are still awful people. But sadly, it’s probably an honest portrayal and just seems overdrawn to today’s eyes.

Taylor captures the surface trappings with flair, including

raised by Franco and his father before things go wrong and the chimps attack humans and run wild

through San Francisco. Silly re-do of the same old Apes-stuff is just more monkey business. Rated PG-13, 105

But he struggles to juggle the overflowing plotlines: Skeeter’s love life, the revenge of Minny (Octavia Spencer), lost and found jewelry, a mother’s cancer, Medgar Evers’ murder, and the pathetic attempts of an overeager young woman (Jessica Chastain) to break into Jackson’s upper-crust society.

Taylor benefits from an excellent, mostly female cast, with supporting roles filled with such top talent as Allison Janney, Mary Steenburgen, Sissy Spacek, Aunjanue Ellis and others.
