Bach players plan ‘Coffee Cantata’ at downtown cafe
H
eidi Klein and Andrew Justice agree that the Denton Bach Society settled on producing Bach’s “The Coffee Cantata” through an unusual route. “Facebook,” Klein and Justice said at the same time. “This thing was born of Facebook banter. This all happened because of Facebook,” said Klein, a soprano who will sing the role of Lieschen. “Yes. It’s all because of Facebook,” Justice said. “I’d had a good cup of coffee at Green Mountain on campus for a change, and then I think I posted the first line of it — ‘Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht’ — on my Facebook page, and that was it.” Justice plays baroque violin for the Denton Bach Players, the core instrumental group that accompanies the Denton Bach Choir during performances. The players also recruit baroque musicians to join the society for performances with a larger orchestra. Klein is a professional baroque soprano. Justice and Klein said the society has decided to suspend its annual Oktoberfest event, a

fall fundraiser that hasn’t earned enough in the past few years to justify the event for 2010. “We’d been looking for something else to do to raise money,” Klein said. When Justice jotted the opening line of Bach’s lightest work, it all came together. Bach penned “The Coffee Cantata” in a coffeehouse, a

The Denton Bach Players include Janelle West, left, soprano Heidi Klein, Eric Smith (cello de gambe), Andrew Justice (violin), Jennifer Carpenter and Lenora McCroskey. Carpenter will not play during “The Coffee Cantata.” favored spot of the composer’s. Though the piece was written between 1732 and 1734, it speaks to the heart of any 21st century Starbucks junkie — or in Denton, the soul who drifts between Big Mike’s Coffee Shop, Jupiter House and the Hydrant Cafe. The cantata libretto was written by Christian Friedrich Henrici, and speaks frankly of jonesing for a cup of joe: “If I can’t drink my bowl of coffee three times daily, then in my torment, I will shrivel up like a piece of roast goat.” Klein said the players have coordinated a casual staging of the piece upstairs at the Hydrant. Baritone David Grogan sings the role of Schlendrian (which translates to “stick in the mud”), the grumpy father of the java-smacked Lieschen. Derek Chester, tenor, sings the role of the narrator.
Justice said the cantata is a rare chance to see Bach injecting his music with levity. “The music is still really good. I mean, the violin part is really hard to play, but it is lighter than Bach’s more recognized work.” The players approached coffee house owner Glen Haas to lend the Hydrant as a venue, and said the businessman immediately agreed. “This is really a perfect setting,” Klein said. “It’s intimate, and with the small ensemble, it should be a good performance.” Justice, Tess Isaac, Lenora McCroskey, Stephanie Raby, Eric Smith and Janelle West accompany the singers. The Hydrant is a small venue, and the society is expecting full performances. If interest exceeds the space, the society might add a performance.

Martinez makes clever use of both his own wit and spot-on observations of the quirks of Americans clinging to the edge of a fast-paced 21st-century life. Divine Misfortune finds a suburban couple floundering to be more upwardly mobile. Their answer? Keep up with the Joneses by signing a contract with a god of their choice. Their decision opens the door to a god who comes in the form of a talking raccoon who wants to crash on their couch.

Paleo — a.k.a. David Andrew Strackany — will pull into Dan’s Silverleaf for a show on Monday night.
On the road again
P
aleo — the one-person band of David Andrew Strackany — is first and foremost an artist whose medium happens to be music. It’s just him, following the beat of his own small guitar, putting his insights to words and song. Paleo performs on Monday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Strackany is a true wanderer, and there aren’t many of those around, at least not who take the stage. The folk singer-songwriter has spent the last five years on the road, living out of his car, booking his own clubs, and writing and recording a song
a day for a year. That body of work — known as his Song Diary, which Strackany posted daily on his website — was recorded between April 2006 and April 2007. He recently signed to Partisan Records with the album, A View of the Sky, which will be available in September. Those who come out on Monday will have the opportunity to hear a young man on a deeply personal musical journey. Roy Robertson and Claire Morales open for Paleo, who goes onstage at 9 p.m. The cover charge is $5 for those 18 and older. — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

cAllen shoegazeindie band Dignan will play at Dan’s Silverleaf on Wednesday night, performing songs from its two EPs, The Tangled Woods and The Guest, as well as its latest release, Cheaters & Thieves. The group originated with two high school friends — vocalist and guitarist Andy Pena and bassist Devin Garcia — who stayed up until the wee hours and wrote songs in a church sanctuary. Eventually they added drummer Trey
Perez, vocalist and keyboardist Heidi Plueger and singer Davy Palomino, who also plays many instruments, including accordion, keyboard, percussion and trumpet. Theirs is a mellow mix of soft vocals with gentle accompaniment. Dignan is as of yet unsigned, but is building a following through cross-country road tours and performances at some impressive festivals, including CMJ in New York, Dfest in Tulsa, Next Big in Nashville, Cornerstone Festival

Denton band gaining national acclaim with tour, upcoming album By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

hiny Around the Edges wouldn’t have made its album in any other town but Denton. This summer has been good to the Denton three-piece — which is Michael and Jenny Seman and Kerm Rivas. Not only did the local outfit complete Denton’s Dreaming, to be released Sept. 14 on vinyl, but the band played at the
Dallas Observer Music Awards ceremony last month. The group also managed to join a reportedly raucous house show that is destined to end up in a feature-length documentary now in production, 40 Nights of Rock & Roll. Deep summer, though, has belonged to the road for both Shiny and its tourmate, Dust Congress. The bands have spent two weeks on do-it-yourself con-
certs in St. Louis, Chicago and New York City. Wednesday night, members of the band and Dust Congress mingled in a Philadelphia brownstone before heading out to play a gig. “This album is more a collection of songs. Holy Roller was much more thematic,” Michael Seman said. “We’re a three-piece, and this album was much more about us coalescing as a band.” And coalesce they have. Shiny

Shiny Around the Edges — Michael Seman, left, Kerm Rivas and Jenny Seman — has had a busy summer, which will culminate in the Sept. 14 release of the band’s latest album, Denton’s Dreaming. Around the Edges is a tight ensemble. That’s not to be confused with tight in terms of sleek, produced songs. The album doesn’t patch over rough edges with software. When you hear piano on the album, it evokes the mellow, boxy sound that only an upright can produce. Rivas and Michael Seman twist guitar and bass lines together without clipping off any rusty barbs. The result is that Denton’s Dreaming has an immediate, uncensored feel. See SHINY on 11

OPENING FRIDAY
Eat Pray Love (#1/2) We can all breathe easier now because Julia Roberts has found eternal happiness, true bliss and bodily harmony in Eat Pray Love, the new mind-bogglingly insipid film from director Ryan Murphy, based on Elizabeth Gilbert's autobiography. In only her second starring role of the last six years, America’s Sweetheart plays author Gilbert, as she travels to Italy, India and Bali to find herself after a failed marriage to one man (Billy Crudup) and subsequent relationship with another (James Franco). Mindnumbingly simplistic, but with plenty of pretty scenery. Rated PG-13, 135 minutes. — Boo Allen The Expendables (#1/2) Brawn dominates brains in this formulaic testosterone fest noteworthy for its ensemble of erstwhile action-hero types including Sylvester Stallone (who also co-wrote and directed), Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and others, including a couple of surprise cameos. The plot involves a group of assassins on a secret yet dangerous CIA mission in South America, but story takes a clear backseat to shootouts and explosions that grow tiresome. Rated R, 103 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Get Low (####) Low-key character piece elevated by a superb lead performance from Robert Duvall, playing a hermit who emerges from a life in the Tennessee woods with a wish to arrange a living funeral so he can exorcise demons from his past. The script (remarkably based on a true story) is thin on its own, but director Aaron Schneider smartly lets his actors — including Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black — take command. The result is deliberately paced but ultimately poignant. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Farewell (###1/2) Intriguing political thriller from French director Christian Carion (Joyeux Noel) about a KGB officer (Emir Kusturica) who becomes disenfranchised with Soviet ideals and turns into a Cold War spy by passing secret documents through a French intelligence agent (Guillaume Canet). It offers a compelling look at history and is filled with strong performances, even though the uneven screenplay stumbles in its effort to build consis-

t least give Scott Pilgrim vs. the World points for trying. This outrageously high-energy comedy, based on the series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, has a visual style that’s fearless if nothing else. British director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) swings for the fences, even if he whiffs. Wright seems to have the intention of creating a featurelength music video that keeps intact the visual spirit of the source material. His use of rapid-fire editing and technical gimmicks is both imaginative and exhausting. He throws everything at the tent suspense. Also stars Willem Dafoe and Fred Ward. Not rated, 113 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Love Ranch (##) Ill-conceived period piece from Oscar nominee Taylor Hackford (Ray) tells the true story of a Nevada brothel in the 1970s operated by Grace (Helen Mirren) and Charlie (Joe Pesci), a mismatched couple whose marriage is thrown into disarray by the arrival of a boxer who is supposed to be

screen, from spelled-out sound effects to split screens to various varieties of flashbacks and fantasy sequences, presumably to distract viewers from a basic plot that doesn’t deserve all the effort. The story boils down to something pretty basic and familiar, with Scott (Michael Cera) as a quirky musician trying to get over a bad breakup Charlie’s new protege. The setup is fine, but the film seems to lose focus by turning into a generic love triangle that’s neither sexy nor convincing. It’s a depressing waste of a standout cast. Rated R, 117 minutes. Visual style can’t defeat weak plot of ‘Scott Pilgrim’
when he meets a new girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) carrying some baggage of her own. Scott begins having commitment issues inside his own head at the same time that his indie-rock band is poised for a breakthrough. To win the girl’s heart and satisfy his own insecurities, he devises a plan defeat her seven ex-boyfriends in a series of video game showdowns. Cera is appealing enough, even if he plays yet another variation of the hip yet nerdy, charming yet awkward neurotic that he’s portrayed in his past few films. Many of the best lines, however, belong to Kieran Culkin as his very sarcastic gay roommate.
Still, it’s clear from the beginning that the actors hang around basically to supplement all the frenetic camerawork and stylistic trickery. Wright is the star here, and he’s a talent who has earned the right to misfire with something as ambitious as this. Scott Pilgrim might be a love-it-or-hate-it proposition. The film tries extremely hard to be edgy and cool, and its builtin audience of fanboys and comic geeks will probably tell you that you don’t get it if you don’t agree.
Game follows Tim (Paul Rudd), a financial executive on the verge of a big promotion who must find an idiot to invite to his boss’s dinner for oddballs. Enter Barry (Steve Carell), an eccentric taxidermist who isn’t in on the joke, then winds up ruining Tim’s life. There are a few big laughs from a solid cast, and it is an improvement on its dismal source material, but the film turns flat when it tries to be heartfelt. Rated PG-13, 114 minutes. — T.J. Inception (###1/2) The latest mind-
bending thriller from visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) is about Dom (Leonardo DiCaprio), a man who specializes in the illegal practice of extraction, or stealing secrets from a person’s mind while the victim is dreaming. At times, Inception threatens to collapse under the weight of its own ambition, but in a summer of sequels and retreads, the level of inspiration alone is praiseworthy. Rated PG-13, 148 minutes. — T.J.

Shiny The band started recording the album last summer, almost immediately after getting Holy Roller in the can with Matthew J. Barnhart. The holdup was the question of how to release the record. The trio eventually settled on vinyl. They made the album at the Echo Lab just outside Denton, and finished some tracks at the studio of Paperstain Records, an in-house setup at Justin Lemons’ residence. Michael Seman said the tour includes several shows organized by Denton expatriates. “I wouldn’t say that touring informs the creative process for us,” Michael Seman said. “That comes for us when we have time to sit down and think. A LITTLE LOVE FOR ‘DENTON’S DREAMING’ Shiny Around the Edges brings us a sound that benefits from experience, and the kind of musical seasoning that hits the ear like wine hits the palate. That first taste? The tang of Michael Seman’s guitar is all mood and meat from the black gumbo of the North Texas soil. The next note is a lighter bouquet of Jenny Seman’s voice — a mezzo-contralto that can go from dewy to deluxe in the same song. Before long, we have the primal throb of Kerm Rivas’ bass work. If Shiny does nothing else, it deals in a kind of musical heft. The three-piece makes music you can sink your teeth into. In “Barcelona,” Rivas and the Semans play with a traditional sort of pop structure. One track later, in “Secrets of the Double Blind,” the group reaches back to a bluesy tradition that weights the song with Rivas’ sludgy bass and the lyrics that remind us “Jesus is coming/for the second time” before Jenny Seman lets a floor tom have it. Denton’s Dreaming fulfills the promise of Shiny’s 2009 release, Holy Roller. In this latest album, the band’s blues gains dimension from gospel, folk and rock forebears. And yet there is a little something else in the album, too. The trio has a flash of showmanship in its songwriting — we can see macabre performance artist Diamanda Galas covering “Robinwood Must Burn,” not in her typical hellhound fashion, but as a sweet, ragtime serenade to the Grim Reaper. It’s hard to listen to Denton’s Dreaming without feeling that there’s something sinister out there in the spiky, yellow Denton grass. It’s just as hard to finish the album without the feeling that Shiny is all about that eclipse in the middle of things — where none of that shine touches. Take for instance, Michael Seman’s confession in “Trust Me”: “I broke my nose just to see the blood/I can breathe better now.” It’s deeper in the dark, and Shiny’s light only falls so far. — Lucinda Breeding
izing. And that’s important. It’s a relationship-building thing for us. But the creative part doesn’t happen on the road, really. It doesn’t seem to work that way for us.” Denton is both the setting
and a character in the album. Michael Seman said Denton’s music revival has made the here and now an important moment for musicians who mean to explore and produce without packing up and head-
ing to a bigger city. “Denton’s a college town. That’s one thing it’s got going for it,” he said. “You have this ongoing new energy in the city from the school, but you also have an established communi-
