Lane, a high school dropout from Greenville, S.C., recently signed with IAMSOUND Records, a Los Angeles indie label, and released her fourtrack disc, Gone, Gone, Gone, last month. Lane’s full-length record, Walk of Shame, drops on Sept. 27. After deserting her Southern roots and leaving home in a beaten-up trailer, Lane worked her way to L.A. with no particular plan or ambition — besides getting away from her Southern-bred restlessness. After dabbling in odd jobs around the city and a short stint in fashion design that led her all the way to New York City, Lane found her niche in songwriting, crafting heartwrenching ballads and funfilled country anthems. Since then, Lane has transformed herself into a stagesavvy, country-rooted performer with a rock ’n’ roll twist. She shares Tuesday’s bill with Glass Mountain Orchestra and Mando Saenz. The show is open to all ages. — Katie Burks

OPENING FRIDAY
Attack the Block When alien monsters invade South London, a gang of local teenagers fights back to defend their turf. With John Boyega, Jodie Whittaker and Alex Esmail. Written and directed by Joe Cornish. Rated R, 90 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Fright Night In this remake of the 1985 film, a popular student (Anton Yelchin) trying to enjoy his senior year in high school discovers that his new neighbor (Colin Farrell) is a vampire and must find a way to vanquish him. With Christopher MintzPlasse and Toni Collette. Written by Marti Noxon. Rated R, 112 minutes. — LAT The Future (#) In a country of more than 300 million people, surely someone will find charming the selfindulgent posturings of writer-director Miranda July, who also co-stars with Hamish Linklater, as a pair of suddenly adrift 35-year-olds with little future. Meanwhile, a potentially adoptive cat comments on the action, or inaction. Deadly dull, pointless, cloying and artificially whimsical. Rated R, 91 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen One Day (##1/2) Director Lone Scherfig (An Education) directs from David Nicholls’ novel and screenplay about the quarter-century relationship of a couple (Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess). They appear in different stages, as they are chronicled on the same day over the years. The gimmick works for a while but never saves the routine-materialwith-a-twist formula. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World A retired secret agent (Jessica Alba) who has her hands full with a new baby and twin step-kids is called back into action to battle a supervillain and gets help from her family. With Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook and Joel McHale. Written and directed by Robert Rodriguez. In 3-D. Rated PG, 88 minutes. — LAT
NOW PLAYING 30 Minutes or Less A pizza delivery guy (Jesse Eisenberg) is kidnapped by two wannabe criminals (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) and forced to rob a bank. With Aziz Ansari. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). Rated R, 83 minutes.
In Conan the Barbarian, Jason Momoa takes over a role originated by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1982. Lionsgate
Pretty but brainless By Christy Lemire o one ever turns into a giant snake in the new Conan the Barbarian. That, in a nutshell, is what’s wrong with this remake: The knowing sense of big, ridiculous fun that marked the 1982 original is gone, and in its place we get a self-serious series of generic sword battles and expository conversations. Fight, talk, fight, talk, fight, talk, then an enormous throwdown followed by a denouement that dangles the possibility of a sequel (dear God, no) — that’s the basic structure here. And yet, despite seeming so simplistic, director Marcus Nispel’s film is mind-numbingly convoluted. The fact that it’s been converted to a murky, smudgy, barely-used 3-D does-
n’t help matters. At one point, I scrawled in my notes: “Incomprehensible underwater serpent attack.” There you have it. The script is credited to three writers, based on Robert E. Howard’s Conan character, but everyone involved would probably prefer that you not think of this as a remake. While the original Conan — the movie that signaled the arrival of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a bona fide movie star — looks extremely dated nearly
30 years later, it still functions just fine as both an epic adventure tale and an admitted guilty pleasure. There’s very little that’s pleasurable in this new Conan, aside from allowing us to ogle the muscular, 6-foot-5 physique of up-and-coming action star Jason Momoa. If you’re into that kind of thing, that is — he is a spectacle to behold, albeit in a romance-novel covermodel kind of way. Once again, the Cimmerian warrior is on a mission to avenge the deaths of his father (Ron Perlman, who’s in no way being put to his best use) and the rest of his village. He’s after the evil warlord Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang), who’s after the Mask of Acheron, which resembles a dried-up octopus. But it can spring to life and provide
— LAT Captain America: The First Avenger (###) The last Marvel Comics setup for next summer’s allstar blockbuster The Avengers finds Chris Evans starring as the World War II fighting hero. Evans brings an earnest dignity and intelligence to the role of Steve Rogers, a scrawny kid from Brooklyn with dreams of military glory. But scientist Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) sees some-
thing special in him and enlists him for a daring experiment. Hugo Weaving plays the former Nazi leader Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. Red Skull, who’s formed his own splinter group and built some intimidating weapons. Director Joe Johnston’s film feels weighty and substantial, even in 3-D, and it has a beautiful, sepia-toned, art-deco look about it. Rated PG-13, 126 minutes. — The Associated Press
Cowboys and Aliens (###1/2) Daniel Craig stars as a disoriented cowboy in the Old West who joins forces with a local honcho (Harrison Ford) to fight off an attack of aliens. Director Jon Favreau takes his job seriously and, except for small doses of black humor, does his best to mix the two genres. With Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde and Paul Dano. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — B.A. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

unlimited power to the wearer with the help of some drops of pure blood — which Tamara has. Hence, she’s in demand. Khalar Zym is aided in his quest by his half-witch daughter Marique, played by an overthe-top Rose McGowan in the kind of daring, skin-baring outfits she used to wear on the red carpet when she was still dating Marilyn Manson. Marique tries out her burgeoning supernatural powers in a battle with Conan himself, but when it comes time to fight Tamara as part of the film’s climax, it’s all mano-a-mano. Why? Because it’s sexier for them to be writhing around on the ground with each other. If only the rest of the movie had such an unabashed sense of camp, we might have been onto something. (##) James Franco stars as a scientist working in a laboratory experiment with chimps on an Alzheimer’s cure that he eventually tries on his father (John Lithgow). One chimp is raised by Franco and his father before things go wrong and the chimps attack humans and run wild through San Francisco. Silly re-do of the same old Apes-stuff is just more monkey business. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — B.A.

Justin McBride’s cowboy songs come from life on the ranch, and the back of a bull

“It’s something I’ve been doing for as long as I’ve been alive, pretty much. It’s work. It’s not like the movies. Well, some of it is. But the cowboy has been romanticized.”

efore Justin McBride submitted himself to the rigors of the road as a musician, he rode bulls. He donned a glove, settled on the back of a snorting, stomping animal weighing a hair less than a ton, and then let it try to toss him onto the dirt and end him.

country: the likes of Hank Williams Sr., Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. Now that he’s making music — including recording a live record at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth, a benchmark for a rising country star — the voices of the past matter even more. “I mean, I love really traditional country music,” he said. “I really like it much more than I like country music of today. I love a lot of that kind of music. There are certain songs I do that are more like a ballad, like ‘Tumbleweed Town.’ I really like up-tempo songs. I’m not much of a sappy love song kind of guy.” Indeed, his songs do have a pace a bullriding man would keep. Even “Beer Drinking Songs” is purposeful, and “Love Me If You Can” is a ballad with forward motion. “That Was Us” is a memory wrapped up in a chase song. Though he’s got an audience, a fan base and plenty of “street cred” from his years on the backs of bucking bulls, McBride said his songwriting hasn’t yet come into its own. “I’m not that really experienced just yet,” he said. “I’m comfortable writing with a few guys right now. When I’m working on a song, it’ll come from an idea and then we’ll work it out. I’ve got a lot of work to do to really and truly be a songwriter.” The concert circuit means McBride is back on the road, playing venues, rodeos and even some big houses. “You know what? It’s not so much
being on the road that I like so much, it’s what you do when you get there,” he said. “I wish I could just bring everybody to my place every weekend, really. It is fun to get to see all the different people you’re seeing when you’re out making music or riding bulls, all the different types of people that you get to meet.” When he was bull riding, McBride did 32 events a year. When he stopped riding and went to work for the bull riding company, he spent five or six years doing public relations work — radio promotions, press and then working the shows themselves. Music is demanding, but not scarier than riding a bull, he said. When reminded that public speaking and performing is one of the most widespread human fears, McBride clucked his tongue. “Yeah, that’s just because most people have never been trampled by a bull.”

Music is a much easier trip, the Oklahoma country artist said. McBride performs at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, which opens Friday. He’ll play on the last day of the fair on the Bud Lite stage. Being a bull rider and working cowboy makes McBride different than most wellknown country musicians. He still runs cattle on his Oklahoma ranch. When he sings about bull-riding, he’s hearing the thick bovine breath and smelling the musk. He’s not assuming a persona or acting. He’s had the blisters and the bruises. “It’s something I’ve been doing for as long as I’ve been alive, pretty much,” he said. “It’s work. It’s not like the movies. Well, some of it is. But the cowboy has been romanticized. When they were still making fun movies, it was almost kids’ stuff, with Gene Autry and John Wayne. And then later, when they remade Rooster Cogburn, even when they made John Wayne a dark character, it was still a Walt Disney movie.” With actress Gwyneth Paltrow recording a country album for Atlantic Records, and with country artist Tim McGraw making movies, a working cowboy might LEFT: Justin McBride rides in the Professional Bull Riding Dickies American Worker of the Year Invitational in Dallas in June 2008. Justin McBride used to hit the rodeo circuit as a bull rider. He comes to Denton for the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo as a country musician. He’ll play on the fair’s final day, Aug. 27. seem like a relic in the music business. In McBride’s anthem “God’s in Oklahoma” from his 2009 album, Don’t Let Go, the singer belts about feeling sorry for “folks in Austin, Birmingham and Boston/ Chicago, St. Louis and LA/I know they keepin’ busy/in all them big old cities/but God’s in Oklahoma today.” In a way, it’s a defense of the rural soil that birthed country music, before Hollywood got hold of it for flicks like Country Strong. “Yeah, I think so. It is, a little,” McBride
said. “It’s cool because that’s one thing country music has done a good job of. It’s not always about the real cowboy, but it turns their eye that way. It’s not always an accurate portrayal. But it’s not all wrong, either.” McBride rode the rodeo circuit first as a two-time world champion bull rider, and eventually as a marketing man for Professional Bull Riders Inc. Songwriting came later. McBride grew up in Nebraska. His childhood was documented in part by what he calls classic
