aleb Ian Campbell is the wunderkind Denton is starting to recognize. The 20-something singer, songwriter and band member has the chops that musicians like Andrew Tinker have — a keen understanding of the keyboard and the guitar, and a mind for music both analytical and inspirational.

White Drugs’ Gold Magic is a record-only release.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

There’s one big difference between Campbell and the likes of Tinker. He’s not classically trained. Campbell held court to great effect during appearances at this year’s North by 35 Music Conferette. As the frontman of the Polycorns, Campbell performed at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern in the local band’s final show. A day later, he stripped his set bare for a solo act at Andy’s Bar. Campbell headlines Friday night at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. The gig will be a teaser of Campbell’s unreleased album and a chance to hear what’s roosting in the musician’s brain for a hoped-for second record. His debut record has been in the can for maybe two months, Campbell said. The project was a chance to work with another local musician, Robert Gomez. “It was kind of a random thing,” Campbell said. “I’ve been a fan of Robert’s for a while now. I’d go to his shows and walk up to him to shake his hand afterward. I told him I had a demo. A few months later, he contacted me and told him he liked what he heard.” What Gomez heard was atmospheric, haunting music written with both care and a taste of risk. Campbell weaves a boyish tenor through music that is plaintive but passionate, heady but heartfelt. One can see why Gomez would produce Campbell’s record. In his guitar work — which seems to hint at the harp at some moments and the

White Drugs releases its latest album, Gold Magic, at Rubber Gloves tonight. piano at others — Campbell experiments with counterpoint and space, similar to what Gomez does in his last album, Pine Sticks and Phosphorous. “Robert is right along my tastes,” Campbell said. “We look at things the same way.” Campbell isn’t signed, but said the album is being shopped to labels this fall. “I would say it’s kind of like a personal album,” he said. “A lot of the songs revert back to the feelings of being a child, and being able to play with toys — I was thinking about

that a lot when I was working on it. I used a lot of instrumentation that really followed that feeling. For instance, I used a toy piano in a part of a song. It’s interesting to find the sophisticated sound in a toy instrument.” The tracks are suspended between play and discovery. The songs are spacious. In “FortifyTheMessageIn,” Campbell does a duet with Denton songwriter Sarah Jaffe. Dreamy and spacious, the song catches a youthful spirit and an old soul in dialogue.

“It has a lot of haunting melodies that are kind of laidback,” Campbell said of the record. “There are some pieces that are upbeat and poppy, but it still had that spacey kind of feeling.” Sounds like: Jeff Buckley on a day when his demons were simmering. Or the ghost of guitarist Andres Segovia nesting in a 19-year-old boy who prefers meditation to football. Are those the finicky angles of Mexican composer Manuel Maria Ponce we hear in “Notebook Owner”? Could it be those rebellious time signatures? Listen for yourself at www.myspace.com/calebian campbell. Details: Peopleodian, Savage and the Big Beat open the show at 10 p.m. Friday. Ages 18 and older. Cover is $5. I For some forceful chutzpah and ear-piercing vocals, check out Denton’s White Drugs during their record release show at 9 p.m. today at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 411 E. Sycamore St. White Drugs doesn’t bother with safe stuff. Lyrically, the band reflects on illicit substances and putting a girlfriend up for sale. Fuzzy guitars, wham-boom-pow drums and throat-shredding vocals make the band a sure thing for an evening of testosteronedrenched music. And yet White Drugs, which unveils its latest release, the vinyl-only Gold Magic, isn’t a mere noise factory. Melody is important to the local quartet. Sounds like: Black Francis and the Stooges becoming blood brothers in a small Texas town. Details: White Drugs headlines after sets by Puffy Areolas and Kaboom. oors open at 8 p.m. Monday at Rubber Gloves for Junius, the Boston-based band that Rolling Stone called “spellbinding and heartbreaking, gripping from the first note to the last. A hard rock dream come true.” Junius is on the road, promoting its debut full-length album that took three years to complete: The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist, referring to the controversial psychoanalystscientist Immanuel Velikovsky. Boston band Junius’ debut album recounts the life of controversial psychoanalyst-scientist Immanuel Velikovsky. poohed Velikovsky’s catastrophic claims, but Einstein supported him in his research. The controversy is referred to as “The Velikovsky Affair.” Martyrdom chronicles Velikovsky’s life from birth to death, beginning with “Birth

Rites by Torchlite,” whose introduction includes these words from Velikovsky: “The belief that we are living in a orderly universe, that nothing happened to this Earth and other planets since the beginning, that nothing will happen

till the end, is a wishful thinking that fills the textbooks … and your textbooks are still of Victorian vintage.” From there, the song launches into a musical tribute that lasts through 10 songs interspersed with portions of Velikovsky’s writings and lectures, ending with the swirling “The Mourning Elegy.” Junius’ postrock music has been called “cinematic.” In a word, it’s powerful. Showgoers can plan on hearing parts of Martyrdom mixed with recorded Velikovsky snippets as well as some of the band’s older gems. Sharing the bill is Orbs, which has been touring with Junius and is promoting its debut, Asleep Next to Science, released earlier this week. The cover charge for the evening is $8. The band members of Oregon’s Archeology all come from deeply religious backgrounds, which show in their music.

Beliefs laid bare A

rcheology’s name references how two of the indie-folk band’s members met, but the name was also chosen for its more scientific meaning — evoking images of unearthing relics of previous cultures in an attempt to better understand one’s own. The Portland, Ore., band’s nucleus is two friends, Daniel Walker (lead vocals, bass, guitar) and Jason Davis (vocals, guitar), who met at an archaeological research site and discovered they had much in common. In addition to their love of music, they both grew up in churches and had ministers for fathers. They were later joined by

drummer Benjamin Haysom and singer-guitarist-keyboardist Zach Dilday, who also came from deeply religious backgrounds. Archeology’s music explores spiritual beliefs, particularly with its latest release, Memorial, which examines modern religion. The title track begins, “When we walk, we walk with darkness/And our hearts they love the lawless ‌ I said I’d go where he would lead me/Down a path of grace and mercy/But I stumbled/Now I’m standing at the crossroads/no sign of heaven.â€? The chorus asks, “And when my body breaks, will your words heal my wounds?â€?

Archeology explores roots

These former church boys probably sang their share of hymns on Sunday mornings and those harmonies weren’t lost on them. Neither was their time spent listening to sermons and pondering their messages. Archeology, through deep digging and soul-searching, is now found. Archeology will be performing Friday night at Hailey’s, 122 W. Mulberry St., along with Analog Rebellion, Land Mammals and Young and Brave. Doors open at 9 p.m., and the show is open to all ages. The cover charge is $6 for those 21 and older, $7 for those younger than 21. — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

FORTYFEST: RESONATE! 2010

Staff Writer

rian “Head” Welch may not do drugs anymore, but “I still do crazy music,” said the guitarist, a former member of Korn. During his time with the nu-metal band, he was addicted to drugs and lived what he calls a “tormented” existence. Drugs controlled his life for a number of years, to the point that he was neglecting his responsibilities as a father to his now-12-year-old daughter, Jennea, who played a big part in his decision to change. She had already lost her mother to a drug addiction, and he didn’t want her to lose her father. That’s when he turned to God.

B

And although he had kept his addiction hidden from the public, he has since been very bold in sharing his faith and the struggle that brought him to it, which he shares in an “I Am Second” video at www.iamsecond.com. Welch and his band will be one of 12 groups performing Saturday at a Christian rock music festival called “FortyFest: Resonate! 2010” at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. The festival, which is in its first year, was originally scheduled for March 20, but snow forced its cancellation. The organizers decided to reschedule the event for this year instead of waiting until next March to try again, said Blaine Siske, one of the organizers. “[The bands] were anxious to really help us out,” he said, adding that the performers agreed to come back as their tours allowed. Welch was glad for the delay because he believes his touring band now has a tighter sound. “It’s going to be that much better,” he said. Welch said he isn’t “all weird and out there” like some people would expect, but that he ties his old life in well with his new life. In the time since he turned to faith in Jesus, Welch said he is in a better place. “I think people are going to be surprised,” he said of his upcoming performance. He will be performing Saturday night before the headliner Red, which he is happy about because he doesn’t like headlining. “Even in Korn I didn’t like it,” Welch said. He will also be touring with Red later this year while promoting his 40-day devotional to be

released in December, titled Stronger: Forty Days of Rock, Jesus and Salvation. While his music has a Christian message, Welch doesn’t classify it as Christian music and he wouldn’t call himself a Christian musician. “Christians don’t know what to do with me, and my old life doesn’t know what to do with me,” Welch said. He said he is a musician who happens be a Christian. He follows it up with an explanation from a member of the band P.O.D., who asks: If a plumber is a Christian, does that make him a Christian plumber? During his shows, Welch still plays some of the songs from his

Korn days — but not the more controversial tracks — as well as music from his first solo album, Save Me From Myself, and the music he is currently working on. “The crowd seems to get pretty electrified,” he said. Welch gives God the credit for his ability to write lyrics. He didn’t write lyrics for Korn, but on his solo album he wrote the lyrics and the music. “I didn’t have anything to write about before,” he said. He approaches each performance based on the crowd and the venue, usually sharing his testimony. “A lot of times I like to tell my story about really having a rock-

He said he talks about how he got to the end of himself and turned his focus to God. “I attract a lot of people who are going through turmoil in their life,” he said. His fans are as mixed as his music: some old, some new. Welch said a lot of Korn fans hated him when he left the band because they had been turned off by “religion.” But he said after

they read his book Save Me From Myself — which shares its name with his solo album — some of those fans understood how lost he was. Since Welch initially “dove into” his faith, he has had his struggles. But he said the difference is “now I carry this peace and joy.” Welch said he feels he is at a crossroads with his faith; he could either get lazy or get on fire. He is hoping to take it to the next level. Welch said he wants to “keep on and never give up.” He describes the way God touched his life in his book as a feeling like “someone poured liquid love into my body.” The feeling was a high that drugs had never given him, and it is what ultimately halted his addiction. Now, Welch feels he gives more in every performance and pushes himself harder than before. “I believe it’s for God first, people second and me last,” he said. OPENING FRIDAY Cairo Time (##1/2) Fans of Patricia Clarkson and anyone who wants a tour of the chaotic yet picturesque city of Cairo might appreciate this deliberately measured film from writer/director Ruba Nadda. Clarkson plays Juliette, who, while waiting for her husband, finds herself being accompanied throughout the city by Tareq (Alexander Siddig), a retired cop. Their affection grows during the tour, combining light romance with travelogue. Rated PG, 90 minutes. At the Magnolia and Angelika Plano. — Boo Allen Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child (###1/2) Compelling documentary about the eccentric painter whose life was cut tragically short just after he became an underground celebrity in the New York art scene during the 1980s. An affectionate tribute to the artist from director and friend Tamra Davis, the film might not appeal to outsiders, but Davis capably places the artist’s career into context. Although it could use more depth in spots, the images are powerful. Not rated, 88 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Lottery Ticket Kevin Carson (Bow Wow) is just an ordinary guy living in the projects, until the day he wins a $370 million lottery prize. Unfortu-

nately for Kevin, the lottery claim office is closed for a long holiday weekend, and he must keep his good fortune a secret. Of course, the news spreads like wildfire, and poor Kevin must figure out how to survive three days among all the friends, family and neighbors who want a piece of his good fortune. Rated PG-13, 95 minutes. Piranha 3D Spring break turns gory when an underground tremor releases hundreds of prehistoric, carnivorous fish into Lake Victoria, a popular waterside resort. Rated R, 89 minutes. The Switch Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) is single woman who, despite her neurotic best friend Wally’s (Jason Bateman) objections, decides it’s time to have a baby with a little help from a charming sperm donor (Patrick Wilson). Unbeknownst to her, Wally switches the preferred sample for his own. Rated PG-13, 101 minutes. Vampires Suck (#) And so does this movie. That was an easy one, but this latest spoof from the directors of Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans is shockingly uninspired. This time the primary target is the Twilight series and other vampire movies, along with pokes at contemporary teenage television shows. But the sight gags and one-liners are hopelessly flat and stale, perhaps a product of YouTube and other such innovations rendering films of this sort obsolete. Rated PG-13, 77 minutes. — T.J. Winnebago Man (##1/2) Entertaining but ultimately aimless documentary about the phenomenon of Jack Rebney, also known as the “Winnebago Man.” Rebney gained unwanted notoriety with his hilarious curse-spewing outtakes from a 1989 Winnebago commercial. They eventually went viral, gaining him new fame on the Internet and YouTube. Austin filmmaker Ben Steinbauer tracks Rebney down in Northern California to find the man unmellowed by age. Not rated, 86 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.

She’s kid-tested, mother-approved ‘Nanny McPhee’ back in theaters, warts and all By Boo Allen Film Critic

Nanny McPhee — the person, not the movie — follows a formula. When you don’t want her but need her, she will appear. When you no longer need her, but still want her, she must go. Nanny McPhee Returns follows a less restrictive formula. In Nanny McPhee Returns, the snaggle-toothed, warty, unibrowed matron from the surprise 2005 hit makes her second appearance. This time, it is all about the kids. The original Nanny McPhee was also a kid-pleaser based on novelist Christianna Brand’s books. But this latest incarnation, with frighteningly talented Emma Thompson again supplying the screenplay and the lead role, aims solely at drawing laughs from kids. That’s fine, too, but it might leave adults yearning for some of the cleverness and

Nanny McPhee Returns Rated PG, 108 minutes. Opens Friday.

more mature humor of the original. This Nanny finds Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal) struggling to raise her three rebellious children on a rural English farm while her husband is serving in World War II. Her smarmy, combative young niece and nephew arrive from bomb-threatened London just as it looks like the family homestead might be lost to financial problems. Enter Nanny McPhee, “small C, capital P,” as she loves to remind. She whips the children into shape and gradually goes about solving the problems of an absent father and fleeting funds. But director Susanna White only uses these main spots from Thompson’s script

as a jumping-off point. White flips among various pursuits, highlighting poop gags, pratfalls, broad humor and cloying, Babe-like animatronics. The uneven results include synchronized swimming pigs, belching crows, and elephants wandering in and out with little explanation. White seems to grab for whatever might be on hand to wring out humor that would appeal to children. On the plus side, Nanny McPhee Returns mimics its predecessor in sporting excellent production values. The computer effects usually look realistic enough, however absurd. Mike Eley’s cinematography and Simon Elliott’s production designs accentuate the Greens’ colorful and evocative farm life. Distinguished luminaries such as Ralph Fiennes and Maggie Smith take supporting roles, giving distinct personalities to characters that might otherwise have been overlooked. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.
