Fair goes out with a bang
I
f you haven’t been out to the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, there’s still time as the 83rd annual event continues to roll out musical talent, rodeos, livestock shows, carnival rides and a smorgasbord of midway-style eats. This weekend, fair officials lined up the likes of the Josh Abbott Band and the Joey Green Band tonight, and the Randy Rogers Band and Granger Smith on Friday. Abbott formed his first band with fraternity brothers from his days at Texas Tech University, recording his first 13-song debut, Scapegoat, in 2009. The Randy Rogers Band likes a bit of rowdiness with its music, which kicks in a ballad or two. On Saturday, Tracy Lawrence takes the main stage. Lawrence has a list of platinum and gold records as well as three No. 1 hits from his first album, Sticks and Stones. Also performing Saturday are Mark McGuinn and Justin McBride. — Staff report

enton’s Doug Burr — shown at a Dallas show in June with violinist Becki Howard — will play a free show in St. Andrew Presbyterian Church on Friday night. Burr will play selections from his Americana recordings, most of which are touched by the singer-songwriter’s musings on the sacred. Burr’s most recent album, O Ye Devastator, came out in 2010 to critical raves. He recorded a sanctuary-worthy list of musical settings of the Psalms in The Shawl in 2008. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the downtown church, at 300 W. Oak St. Learn and hear more at www.dougburr.com. — Lucinda Breeding

Greezy does it Early Austin scene’s unofficial house band takes a spin into Denton By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

reezy Wheels has been around long enough to wear three different music brands — all without straying too far from the band’s roots. The Austin outfit was Armadillo rock, then progressive country and now Americana. Co-founding member Cleve Hattersley said it’s all just as well, as long as you don’t call Greezy Wheels country. “People tried immediately to call us progressive country, because nobody could figure out what we were up to,” Hattersley said. “I’d been hanging out with people like Jimi Hendrix, and with my sister, Lissa, who’s been a great jazzer since whenever. We’ve never done straight country, truly. We’ve just done what we do.” Greezy Wheels was the unofficial house band of the Austin music hot house, the Armadillo World Headquarters, during the 1970s. Hattersley said the late 1960s through the ’70s was when Austin because the hippie

capital of Texas. “I look at it like this: Austin had to be that place, you know? It’s the state capital, and that means people who live 1,800 miles away from each other had to come to this one place and get along with each other. People would come from the Panhandle, from East Texas and from down south, and they all had to get along with each other.” With a legacy of close-encounter differ-
ence, Austin and the Armadillo were musical way stations between the coasts: The West Coast had its psychedelic rock, and the East Coast had its jazz. Hattersley said it’s the music of the Gulf Coast that “makes him crazy.” With delight, he means. “When I think of our music, I think about the music in Louisiana and Arkansas,” he said. “It’s incredibly inviting, musically, Louisiana and Arkansas. Those places make me crazy. You got the French in there. You’ve got the black music, the white music. You’ve even got the Indian stuff in there. You’ve got Spanish — Louisiana and Arkansas were part of the Spanish territory before they became part of the States. There’s so much going on. “When we started recording, we were very much about the music of the 1930s era, when radio was first born.” Greezy Wheels plays Denton on Saturday night at Dan’s Silverleaf, kicking up some antique dust and playing songs from Gone Greezy, the 13-track record the band released in May. Hattersley came to Texas from New York City when Roky Erickson invited him to join the 13th Floor Elevators. Hattersley took the bait, but not without a few misgivings. “[It] was really weird if you think about it,” he said. “I was coming to the place that killed

Kennedy, for God’s sake. But it didn’t take me long to realize that Austin was a special place.” The Armadillo turned into the Lone Star State’s answer to Hollywood’s the Troubador, attracting a redhead upstart named Willie Nelson, then Waylon Jennings and Jimi Hendrix. Later, it brought in Bonnie Raitt, Brave Combo, Eric Clapton and Hall & Oates. Hattersley said Greezy Wheels absorbed the scene like a mad, sonic sponge. “We put that to the test at the Lone Star Cafe,” he said. “It was the only place in New York where you could hear Jerry Jeff Walker; George Strait played there. It was the one place in New York where you could hear Texas music, or even really country music.” Greezy Wheels went on hiatus for 25 years, years that Hattersley devoted to family and steadier work. He married Austin fiddler “Sweet Mary,” who has been part of Greezy Wheels since its inception. Lissa Hattersley, Cleve’s sister, is another founding member who still kicks around with the band. For the
last 11 years or so, journalist and bassist John Jordan (the Vangards, Chris Duarte Project) has played with them, as has drummer John Bush (Edie Brickell & New Bohemians) and vocalist Penny Jo Pullus. Together, they throw their sensibilities into a gumbo of song, and come up with Gone Greezy, a record that can evoke two-stepping and solitary soul-searching. Some of the record winks at the collective angst of a First World band of malcontents (“My Planets Are in Retrograde), just as much of it takes things seriously (“Come the Wake”). Lyrically, Cleve Hattersley tries to sustain an allergy to pretension — something he said he got to practice by writing “The Idiot & the Odyssey,” a column in Oui magazine, which competed with the likes of Playboy. “It’s a story I’m trying to tell, stripping it all down to the bare bones. It’s the most honest way I can express myself. When we write music, for every lyric, there’s a corresponding note,” he said.
THEY’RE WITH THE BAND Greezy Wheels is: John Bush — drums John Jordan — bass Lissa Hattersley — lead singer Penny Jo Pullus — backup singer “Sweet Mary” Hattersley — fiddle Cleve Hattersley — guitar and vocals
When it comes to performing live, Hattersley said the band goes where the spirit leads. And the spirit is a cocktail of energy from the audience, the alchemy between musicians and that unnamed, unknowable thing that makes live music exhilarating and a little magical. “I’ve written a set list for every show for 30 years. We’ve never followed a set list. Not once,” he said. “We’re still hungry. In fact, we’ve got a song we’re working on called ‘We’re Still Hungry.’ We are. It’s the most honest way of expressing myself. I’ll say it until my dying breath: ‘Screw you, society. Change still needs to be made.’” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877. A TASTE OF THE TRACKS “COMES THE WAKE” This song, the sleeper and highlight of Gone Greezy, introduces keening, Irish traditional fiddle phrases with Mississippi Delta, asphalt-scorching blues. The vocals are delightfully shaky — but this is a track in which the Wheels confront the certainty of death: “All we are is a thin trickle/trickle o’ blood in the sea of life/ha-ha-ha/Comes the wake/The drums and the whistles/the bells and the brass and they’re playin’ your song/ha-ha-ha …” “DON’T COME HOME WHEN YOU’RE MAD AT ME” The opening track is the first ever of Greezy Wheels’ to hit the Americana charts. Taken alone, the track backs the band into the country and Western category. It also shows off songwriter Cleve Hattersley’s lyrical chops. At first blush, the song is a humorous wink at sweet love soured. At second, it’s a sadder but wiser love letter to a scoundrel who can still make a besotted soul feel bad. Really bad. “HOLLER UP THE MOUNTAIN” This behind-the-beat jig sounds like an Irish pub breaking out in a ceili dance. “I holler up the mountain and howl at the moon/Tryin’ to make peace with a devil in the woods/The end times come and I haven’t made good/Gotta pass it on to the people in the ’hood/I preach and I pray/I preach and I pray/and I holler up the mountain.” — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY Colombiana (###) A brawny Baction picture with a gorgeous, graceful woman wreaking havoc at its center: Yup, this is a Luc Besson movie. The director of La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element serves as co-writer and producer here. Colombiana feels more hammy and muscular, though — but knowingly so, and that's what makes it solid, late-summer escapist fun. Zoe Saldana stars as Cataleya, who saw her parents killed in front of her in the slums of Bogota. Fifteen years later, she’s transformed herself into a highly efficient professional assassin in the U.S., but she still seeks revenge against her parents' killers. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. — The Associated Press Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) wrote and produced this big-screen remake of a 1973 British TV movie, about a little girl (Bailee Madison) whose parents (Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes) don’t believe her when she tells them there all sorts of nasty creatures hiding in the basement of their new home. — McClatchy Newspapers Senna (##1/2) Standard documentary about 1980s and early 1990s Formula 1 race car driver Ayrton Senna. Newsreels, archival material and home movies mix with some captivating dashboard-camera footage for a surface-only look at the handsome Brazilian's life. Interviews are conducted with various friends, family members and racing experts. It will appeal most to his fans and to racing fans. Rated PG-13, 106 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen
NOW PLAYING Captain America: The First Avenger (###) The last Marvel Comics setup for next summer’s allstar blockbuster The Avengers finds Chris Evans starring as the World War II fighting hero. Evans brings an earnest dignity and intelligence to the role of Steve Rogers, a scrawny kid from Brooklyn with dreams of military glory. But scientist Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) sees something special in him and enlists him

Aromatherapy for idiots: Paul Rudd is Ned, a guileless good guy and loser in Our Idiot Brother.
Guiltless and guile-free ‘Idiot Brother’ is hardly a charmer
Our Idiot Brother
By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic
Paul Rudd hops from one sofa to another to another as the title character in Our Idiot Brother, and that’s sort of what the film itself does, too. Rudd stars as an amiable, ambling dude named Ned who has no real goals in life; what he does have is a guilelessness that consistently gets him into trouble, both with his family and with the law. (At the film’s start, he sells pot to a uniformed police officer, which earns him some brief time behind bars.) He has a knack for always saying or doing the wrong thing, even though he always means well. Director Jesse Peretz, working from a script written by his sister, Evgenia Peretz, and her husband, David Schisgall, follows Ned as he bumbles his

way from one situation to the next with no great momentum or sense of character evolution. Ned grows increasingly irritating to his hippie farmer exgirlfriend (Kathryn Hahn), the three sisters he mooches off of (Emily Mortimer, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel) and to us. But then supposedly once they’ve all shunned him for causing so much inadvertent damage, they take him back because they realize what a positive influence he is in their lives. It makes no sense — there’s a gap of logic and emotion that’s hard to overcome. Still, the usually likable Rudd is totally committed to playing
this annoying, goofy schlub: a Capraesque character in cargo shorts and shaggy facial hair. You don’t blame the sisters for ostracizing him — but then they’re all drawn in such an unlikable, two-dimensional way, you won’t want to be on their side, either. Director Peretz says they’re all meant to represent specific New York types, but they never feel like fully realized people. First, Ned stays with Mortimer’s Liz, the smug, hovering, ultra-P.C. Brooklyn mom; her kids are named River and Echo. She’s married to a skeevy and disdainful documentary filmmaker played by a surprisingly unfunny Steve Coogan. They are obsessed with getting their son into the right private school. When he wears out his welcome there, he moves in with Banks’ Miranda, an impatient and ambitious writer for Vanity Fair (where Peretz the screenwriter is a contributing editor in real life). She’ll do whatever she
must to get good play for her piece on a British royal, even if it means using Ned to obtain secondhand information. She also bosses around her neighbor (Adam Scott); he has a crush on her for reasons that are difficult to comprehend. (Again, it’s really hard to make Elizabeth Banks unlikable; Our Idiot Brother has achieved that dubious feat.) Finally he joins Deschanel’s Natalie, a bisexual, bohemian artsy type who lives in an already crowded loft. She’s dating a lawyer named Cindy (Rashida Jones), poses nude for painters and tries out awkward new material at poorly attended open mike nights. Unlike the other sisters, she’s not uptight; instead, she’s selfish and flighty to a fault. Whether Ned tears them all apart, brings them back together or finally finds a permanent home, it’s hard to care, because the film doesn’t seem to care, either.

for a daring experiment. Hugo Weaving plays the former Nazi leader Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. Red Skull, who’s formed his own splinter group and built some intimidating weapons. Director Joe Johnston’s film feels weighty and substantial, even in 3-D, and it has a beautiful, sepiatoned, art-deco look about it. Rated PG-13, 126 minutes. — AP Conan the Barbarian (#1/2) The knowing sense of big, ridiculous fun that marked the 1982 original is gone, and in its place we get a selfserious series of generic sword battles and expository conversations. There's very little that's pleasurable in this new Conan, aside from allowing us to ogle the muscular, 6-foot-5 physique of up-and-coming action star Jason Momoa. Once again, the Cimmerian warrior is on a mission to avenge the deaths of his father (Ron Perlman, not being put to his best use) and the rest of his village. He's after the evil warlord Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang. Rated R, 102 minutes. — AP Cowboys and Aliens (###1/2) Daniel Craig stars as a disoriented cowboy in the Old West who joins forces with a local honcho (Harrison Ford) to fight off an attack of aliens. Director Jon Favreau takes his job seriously and, except for small doses of black humor, does his best to mix the two genres. With Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde and Paul Dano. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — B.A. Crazy Stupid Love (##1/2) Steve Carell stars as Cal, a nebbishy fortysomething whose high school sweetheart, Emily (Julianne Moore), announces that she’s slept with someone else and wants a divorce. Cal finds an unlikely mentor in Jacob (Ryan Gosling), an expensively dressed womanizer who gives him a makeover. Gosling has a great, flirty chemistry with Emma Stone as the one woman who sees through his game. But for a movie that intends to be rooted in a recognizable and insightful reality, this features an awful lot of moments that clang in a contrived, feel-good manner. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — AP Final Destination 5 Survivors of a disastrous bridge collapse try to continue to cheat death. With Emma Bell, Nicholas D’Agosto, Miles Fisher and Arlen Escarpeta. In 3-D. Before Denzel Washington brayed “King Kong ain’t got nothin’ on me!” in Training Day, Al Pacino breathed fire — and Cuban cocaine — in Scarface.
Theater gets a hit at ‘Scarface’ Scarface fans, take note. Fathom Events will show the cult classic at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cinemark Denton, 2825 Wind River Lane. Scarface is the 1983 film starring Al Pacino as Tony
Montana, Michele Pfeiffer as the ice cold Elvira Hancock and Steven Bauer as Manny Ribera. The blood-drenched film chronicles the rise of Cuban immigrant Montana and his rise to American drug
lord status. Fathom Events puts limited-run and recorded events into cinemas, often in high definition, for one or a few screenings. — Lucinda Breeding
North Central Texas College will screen the film Objects and Memory with producer-director Jonathan Fein at 7 p.m. Sept. 8. Objects and Memory is a documentary film that tells the stories of people driven to collect and preserve meaningful objects in the wake of momentous events. The film testifies to the cultural and personal importance of preservation, and it asks viewers to think about the ways in which ordinary things can become anchors and symbols. The film traces the experiences of those driven to collect and preserve transformed objects after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and the Vietnam War. With narration by Frank Langella and music by Philip Glass, Objects and Memory was PBS’ special presentation for the seventh anniversary of Sept. 11. The screening, hosted by the NCTC Foundation in observance of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, will take place in the First State Bank Center for the Performing Arts on NCTC’s Gainesville campus. Admission is $15, and proceeds will help fund scholarships for NCTC students. For more information, call 940-668-3355. — Staff report
soul. The Boy Who Lived has a final stand-off with He Who Must Not Be Named, and the magical world hangs in the balance. With Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon. Rated PG-13, 180 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding The Help (##1/2) Tate Taylor directs from Kathyrn Stockett’s best-selling novel about life in early 1960s Jackson, Miss. All the young white women except one (Emma Stone) treat the African-American help atrociously, particularly Aibileen (Viola Davis). The excess of subplots may mar the film’s rhythm, but they provide for an able supporting cast of Allison Janney, Mary Steenburgen, Sissy Spacek, Aunjanue Ellis and others. Rated PG-13, 137 minutes. — B.A. Horrible Bosses (##1/2) An amusing premise doesn’t have much of a payoff in this low-brow comedy about three hard-working buddies
who each hate their jobs because of their, you know, see title. So they devise a clumsy scheme to deliver a harsh comeuppance. There are a few big laughs, even if the script isn’t edgy enough and lacks any connection to reality. It coasts on the appeal of its stars (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day), as well as a slew of cameo appearances. Rated R, 97 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Midnight in Paris A family travels to Paris on business; among them are an engaged couple who have lifechanging experiences. With Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Kathy Bates and Michael Sheen. Written and directed by Woody Allen. Rated PG-13, 94 minutes. — LAT One Day (##1/2) Director Lone Scherif (An Education) directs from David Nicholls’ novel and screenplay
about the quarter-century or so relationship of a couple (Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess). They appear in different stages, as they are chronicled on the same day over the years. The gimmick works for a while but never disguises routine-materialwith-a-twist. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. — B.A. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (##) James Franco stars as a scientist working in a laboratory experiment with chimps on an Alzheimer’s cure that he eventually tries on his father (John Lithgow). One chimp is raised by Franco and his father before things go wrong and the chimps attack humans and run wild through San Francisco. Silly re-do of the same old Apes-stuff is just more monkey business. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — B.A. Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World A retired secret agent (Jessica
Alba) who has her hands full with a new baby and twin step-kids is called back into action to battle a supervillain and gets help from her family. With Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook and Joel McHale.
