he Greater Denton Arts Council celebrates a month of installation today and Friday with “Enough Room,” an arts showcase at the Center for the Visual Arts. Artists from Denton, Dallas and Fort Worth have been building installations — some abstract, some cheeky and funny — in the Meadows Gallery at the arts center. All of the installations play with the idea of the rooms we live, work and have fun in. Some rooms are more intimate, others are communal. Artists built their installa-

O

ut of the gate, Denton’s Trebuchet seems like a progressive rock outfit that capitalizes on heavyhanded guitar work and jack hammer-strength drums.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

But then the quintet adds the sounds of woodwinds and spacey percussion into the mix, upsetting expectations a bit. Frontman Justin Hawkins belts out a hard rock tenor, but turns on the kind of scream that would do a Jesus Christ Superstar-era Ted Neeley proud. Trebuchet has been gigging in Denton for a long while, but held off on recording until it had two discs’ worth of music for its 2009 debut, Bear and the Moon. The album title seems tailor-made for a Midlake side project, but the tracks are deep, dark and steely. The lyrics are more psychological than introspective. In all, the album feels artistically fleshed out by a group of musicians who give details their due. The band plays at Denton’s hard rock headquarters, the Boiler Room, on Friday night. Trebuchet is: Bobby Lotfipour on drums; John Yett on bass; Justin Hawkins on vocals and guitars; Dustin Fleming on guitars and keyboards; and Keith Naylor on guitars and vocals. Sounds like: the love child of Robert Plant and the Toadies’ Todd Lewis went on a

but Spune honors Denton by giving it a chunk of the lineup, which includes Spooky Folk, Final Club, Old Snack, Baruch the Scribe, Goldilocks and the Rock, and Land Mammals. To hear a definitive Denton act in that hefty lineup, be there in time for Baruch the Scribe. The local quartet has shrugged off its folksy history and is in the here and now. If

ever there was a band that exemplified the ambient music of Denton, Baruch the Scribe is it. Concocting spacious, meandering tunes out of guitar, bass, chimes and percussion, to name a few instruments, the band merges simple sounds with rich, textured intent. The band has been noted for collecting “found sounds,” environmental and coincidental sounds that are pulled like

taffy through software programs that give them new context. A drop of water takes on the depth of a timpani drum, or footfalls on gravel become a shimmer of sound off a distorted guitar. Something else to appreciate about the crew: The group has been open about the soulful depths it reaches for in its music, without wringing its audience out for a religious conversion. Baruch the Scribe is: Judson Valdez, Kristen Bryant, Travis Oliver and Chance Maggard. Sounds like: some sinners met up in a neglected cathedral to invent their own steps to recovery. Details: Bring your own ice cream. For more information, visit www.haileysclub.com. — Lucinda Breeding

Voxhaul motors L.A. rock-soul band ventures into town Rock-soul band Voxhaul Broadcast is headed this way from the West Coast on a summer tour that includes two stops in Texas: Austin and Denton. The fuzzy-guitar band from Los Angeles will play at the Boiler Room this Sunday. Voxhaul is getting revved up for its first full-length release, Timing Is Everything, coming out in October. The band is made up of four childhood friends: David Dennis on guitar and lead vocals, Anthony Aguiar on guitar, organ and backing vocals, Phillip Munsey

II on bass and Kurt Allen on drums. They jammed together as kids, but they’ve only been a full-fledged band in the last few years. It didn’t take them long to make an impression, however. The band was named one of L.A.’s best indie bands in the Los Angeles Times Magazine in June, won Best Indie Band at Milwaukee’s Summerfest, and was showcased at South by Southwest in March. The show starts at 10 p.m. with Gringo Star and Our Heroes End. Doors open at 7 p.m. Cover is $5 for those 21 and older and $7 for those younger than 21. — Ellen Ritscher Sackett

OPENING FRIDAY Animal Kingdom (###1/2) Tense, atmospheric Australian gangster film about the Codys and their twisted extended family. Psychotic uncles and brothers plot heists and various mayhem but never seem too successful at anything but causing trouble. Teen Joshua “J” Cody (James Frecheville) finds himself caught up in forces and schemes beyond his control. Jacki Weaver turns in a powerful performance as the clan’s vicious matriarch. Rated R, 112 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — Boo Allen Centurion (##) Old-fashioned medieval battle epic from British director Neil Marshall (The Descent) is reliant on battle sequences and swordplay but lacking in sufficient narrative context. Set during a second-century war between Roman soldiers and a small but resourceful tribe in Britain, it follows the attempted rescue of a Roman general and the tested loyalties of a centurion (Michael Fassbender). The film delivers a heavy dose of brute violence, but the thinly sketched characters give viewers little rooting interest. Rated R, 99 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Mao’s Last Dancer (##1/2) Earnest, crowd-pleasing melodrama, based on a true story, follows Li Cunxin (Chi Cao), who fell in love with ballet as a child in China, then later defected to the United States to marry an American woman, eventually becoming a standout with the Houston Ballet. It’s a well-meaning story of rags to riches that could have used a more subtle approach in its tear-jerking efforts. Still, there are some poignant moments, and veteran director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy) captures some powerful dance sequences. Rated PG, 117 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Mesrine: Killer Instinct — Part 1 (###1/2) This top-notch two-part French gangster film rolls rapidly along, with Vincent Cassel turning in an electric performance as the title character. Charismatic and outgoing Jacques Mesrine learns his trade as a soldier in France’s Algerian conflict, bringing home skills needed to torture, kill, beat up and threaten people. And he robs banks. Part two, Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1, opens next week. Rated R, 113 minutes. At the Magnolia and Angelika Plano. —

behavior and unexplained phenomena that challenge his own beliefs. The film benefits from a cast of unknowns and a straightforward style (using hand-held cameras within a documentary framework) that is nothing new these days but still generates an appropriately creepy mood. Director Daniel Stamm achieves a clever balance between mocking formulas about demonic possession and religious fundamentalism while still delivering some of the cheap thrills that audiences will expect. In other words, it has mainstream appeal without sacrificing its edge. Of course, it’s worth pointing out that the script indulges broad Cajun stereotypes and doesn’t make a lick of sense

when you stop to think about it. The priest and the filmmaker lack simple common sense (why don’t they just leave?) and the girl’s erratic behavior is random at best. But the film’s strength lies in its protagonist, well-played by veteran character actor Fabian. He’s a charlatan who doesn’t believe what he’s preaching and is perfectly open to admitting that, not that his customers would care anyway. In turning some of those preconceived notions on their collective head, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously and becomes more effective as a result.

on’t roll your eyes. The Last Exorcism is more than the latest lowbudget horror flick to roll off the assembly line. A refreshing change of pace that combines elements of genre pioneers such as Rosemary’s Baby and The Blair Witch Project, it’s a shrewd and suspenseful effort that isn’t derailed by an almost complete lack of narrative logic. Using a mock-documentary style, the film is centered on Cotton (Patrick Fabian), a charismatic Texas priest who has made a career out of performing exorcisms without believing in them. In other words, he puts on a show, spouts some religious teachings

and persuades the patient that the demons no longer exist. Then he collects the money. Before he retires, he agrees to take on the case of a Louisiana man convinced that his teenage daughter (Ashley Bell) is possessed without having any direct evidence. Cotton agrees to let a film crew tag along for posterity, thinking it will be an easy job. But once he meets the girl, he becomes entangled in a threatening mess of oddball

film maintains a breathless pace, with some impressive stunts and chase sequences along the way. But the screenplay is no Ocean’s Eleven in its slick attempt to capture camaraderie among thieves. The cast includes Idris Elba, Paul Walker and Chris Brown. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — T.J.

“It’s been a long run, you know, and I’m real thankful for that,” the Beaumont native said, referring to a career that took off after the 1990 release of Too Cold at Home, the first album that brought him acclaim. Chesnutt grew up playing classic country in honky-tonks as a teenager before he made it to Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. Now he has 14 studio albums to his credit, with four platinum records and five certified gold. From those albums, he’s had 14 No. 1 singles and 23 top-10 singles. Without question, the man’s had enough chart-toppers to fill an evening and then some. On his latest album, Outlaw, Chesnutt covered songs made famous by the original outlaws from the 1970s — including Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker, David Allan Coe and Johnny Cash. “They were having hit records … doing music that was against the laws of the Nashville establishment, you know? They were going in and singing the songs they wanted to sing and not what they were told to sing, and they were using their own musicians and doing it their way. And that’s what made them outlaws, ’cause they pissed everybody off in Nashville,” Chesnutt said. “I don’t think See CHESNUTT on 10

I’ve done enough to be aligned with those guys, but it’s flattering when I’m compared.” There are some striking similarities. “I’ve had kind of a tough time, you know, with Nashville in the last 10 years or so,” Chesnutt said last week by telephone from Beaumont. “The business changed, and all of a sudden it seemed like it didn’t matter that I had several platinum albums and a bunch of No. 1s — that didn’t matter at all. All of a sudden, I had to prove myself all over again once the business changed, because when I came in, it was country, you know — the more country you were the better. Then it turned into a pop kind of thing, and everybody wanted to be rock stars, flying around on the stage. … Next thing you know, I feel like I’m kind of lost in the pile. They wanted me to do all that, and I didn’t do it. “I stuck to my guns and I did what I wanted to do, and I still do that. I guess you could say that sometimes I make people mad because I won’t give in and do things their way, but I’ve always been this way. “In the music business, there’s always experts,” Chesnutt said. “You get signed to a major label deal, and the first thing they want to do after you have a lot of success is change you. They all of a sudden [say], ‘So and so just had a triple-platinum album with this kind of music, so this is what we want you to do now.’ That’s exactly

how it works,” he said with a laugh. “I say, ‘Why do I have to do that?’ I’m having success with ‘Bubba Shot the Jukebox’ and ‘Too Cold at Home’ and things like that. And the next thing you know, they wanted me to record pop songs. I got the same old spiel: ‘Ah, well you know, business is changing, radio is changing, the demographics are changing,’ and,” he pauses, “I didn’t agree. I guess I’ll probably never have another chance in Nashville like I had before, and I hate that. “That’s where the music business is, country music anyway. Once you get out of your teens or your 20s, it gets a little harder on us guys.” Outlaw, which hit the stores in June, was recorded in Burbank, Calif., rather than Nashville or Texas, at the home studio of Pete Anderson, who played all of the guitar and bass parts. “When I got there back in December, I was just there to do track vocals, which is not what you keep, you know; it’s just to help build the rest of the tracks,” Chesnutt said. “But we

got in the groove, things started sounding good, and so we kept all of the track vocals, and he

built the rest of the tracks around my vocals. And it came out good.”

ingly simplistic, but with plenty of pretty scenery. Rated PG-13, 135 minutes. — B.A. The Expendables (#1/2) Brawn dominates brains in this formulaic testosterone fest noteworthy for its ensemble of erstwhile action-hero types including Sylvester Stallone (who also co-wrote and directed), Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and others, including a couple of surprise cameos. The plot involves a group of assassins on a secret yet dangerous CIA mission in South America, but the story takes a clear backseat to shootouts and explosions that grow tiresome. Rated R, 103 minutes. — T.J. Get Low (####) Low-key character piece elevated by a superb lead performance from Robert Duvall, playing a hermit who emerges from a life in the Tennessee woods with a

wish to arrange a living funeral so he can exorcise demons from his past. The script (remarkably based on a true story) is thin on its own, but director Aaron Schneider smartly lets his actors — including Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black — take command. The result is deliberately paced but ultimately poignant. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. — T.J. Nanny McPhee Returns (###) Emma Thompson returns in the title role, and supplies the screenplay, for this sequel to the 2005 original based on Christianna Brand’s characters. A mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal) in World War II tends to her three children and a visiting niece and nephew while the father is at war. Enter Nanny McPhee, who makes everything right. Director Susanna White aims directly at kids with broad humor and plenty of cuddly animatronic animals. Rated PG, 108 min-

utes. — B.A. The Other Guys A detective more interested in paperwork (Will Ferrell) and a street-tough cop (Mark Wahlberg) are partnered up. With Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — The Associated Press Piranha 3D Spring break turns gory when an underground tremor releases hundreds of prehistoric, carnivorous fish into Lake Victoria, a popular waterside resort. With Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames and Jerry O’Connell. Rated R, 89 minutes. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (##) This outrageously high-energy comedy, based on the series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, has a visual style that’s fearless if nothing else. British director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) swings for the fences, even if he whiffs. Scott (Michael Cera) is a quirky musician

trying to get over a bad breakup when he meets a new girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), whom he must win over by defeating her seven exboyfriends in a series of video game showdowns. The story and actors seem an afterthought to the frenetic camerawork and stylistic trickery. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — T.J. Step Up 3D Street dancers and a college freshman square off in a competition against world-class hiphop dancers. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — AP The Switch Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) is a single woman who, despite her neurotic best friend Wally’s (Jason Bateman) objections, decides it’s time to have a baby with a little help from a charming sperm donor (Patrick Wilson). Unbeknownst to her, Wally switches the preferred sample for his own. Rated PG-13, 101 minutes.
