U
NT on the Square resumes Thursday night jazz concerts today. The University of North Texas Institute for the Advancement of the Arts started a free concert series last semester, using the downtown gallery and venue for weekly jazz ensembles. Today, the concert features UNT jazz studies chairman
John Murphy on saxophone, and UNT jazz students Sean Giddings on piano, Daniel Parr on bass and Justin Heaverin on drums. Herbert Holl, executive director of the institute, said the series drew audiences to the gallery and venue — sometimes packing the small house — last spring. The series puts jazz faculty
and students, and occasional guests, in performance from 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday through October. Not all dates are scheduled, but updates will be posted at http://jazz.unt.edu/thursday nightmusic. UNT on the Square is at 109 N. Elm St.

Stone, iron and dreams Galleries touch on culture exchange, metal’s versatility
D
enton’s galleries are in “welcome back” mode, with painting, fiber and sculpture occupying the fall visual arts calendar. The University of North Texas continues its exhibition “Piedra y Espejo/The Stone and the Mirror” through Friday. The show features work by five students at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico as part of a cultural exchange between UNT and the Mexican university.
Artists Ana Daniela García Lugo, Sara Martínez Ayala, Laura Contreras Martínez, Taide Itzel Martínez and Adrián Ortega Ramírez have work in the show, which is curated by José Luis Vera. The black-and-white lithographs are a study of the way the artists make sense of the ways urban life encroach on the natural world and yet are influenced by it. A hazy puff of dust rises out of a boot in Sara Martínez Ayala’s Modelo No. 4, and distant power lines crisscross a sky behind a fish in Adrián Ortega Ramírez’s Origenes. A dome and steeple are hidden in the foreground of the work.
The Denton and Mexican universities have been cultivating a cultural and artistic exchange since 2002. The show is in the Cora Stafford Gallery at UNT’s Oak Street Hall, 1120 W. Oak St. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and Friday. I At Texas Woman’s University, the School of Arts presents an exhibition of work by the artists of the Texas Atomic Iron Commission, which is in both the East and West galleries through Sept. 22. What does an iron commission with the word “atomic” have to do with art? It has to do with cast iron
sculpture. Sculptors most often use bronze or aluminum when they work in metal. Those who work in cast iron often have to make a special appliance called a cupola or cupolette to make their art. Picture a cauldron tipped to pour blazing red, molten iron in a mold. The commission connects students, universities, artists and industry to exchange ideas about iron and its uses from the industrial to the artistic. In “Exposed: Recent Work by the Texas Atomic Iron Commission,” artists Dan Askew, Robbie Barber, Kirsten Bloomer, Geoff Broderick, Erin Cunningham, Kurt Dyrhaug, Amy Gerhauser, Jack Gron, Meredith Jack, Gregory Reuter, Fred Spaulding, Tanya Synar and Ed Wilson demonstrate the many ways cast iron can speak.
The East and West galleries are located on the first floor of TWU’s Fine Arts Building, at the corner of Texas and Oakland streets. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and by appointment only on the weekends. I In downtown Denton, Oxide Gallery hosts its monthly gallery night at 6 p.m. Tuesday at 501 W. Hickory St. In addition to the new exhibition, the gallery features a featured group show, “The American Dream.” The featured show highlights work that considers national pride. The show will run through Sept. 28. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. — Lucinda Breeding

enton brings on the noise this weekend, with Hailey’s Club rolling out the hipster shag carpet for a Saturday bill that makes room for local music. Dentoneer, the local music and culture website, is presenting the free Saturday night back-to-school bash, and promised more acts than listed. Denton music offerings on the marquee include Baruch the Scribe, with its atmospheric shoegaze melodies and the ability to fill up a room with gentle sound (think the Cure on a gray day). The Hope Trust, a local Americana ensemble, makes the most of a tight group of musicians and

Kelly Upshaw’s poetic soul. And Young and Brave churns out indie folk with a pleasingly Texas twang and a bit of Southern gospel. Stick around for Peopleodian, a local ensemble that tempers its brainy idiosyncratic tendencies with a flair for theater and the kind of imagination that kept Ed Wood awake at night. There’s a bit of Austin on the side for this show: Mother Falcon, a group that seems to travel with almost as much personnel as the Polyphonic Spree. The abridged string orches-
tra puts the pit behind popworthy vocals. On numbers like “Marigold,” the sweet boygirl vocals sound like the soundtrack from Juno borrowed the London Festival Orchestra. “Still Life” sounds like David Byrne fell in love and needed a string section to get it all out. Trumpet, bassoon and sax make an appearance, too. More acts were to be announced by press time. Details: Doors open at 7 p.m. Saturday. No cover for ages 21 and up. Those who aren’t of drinking age pay $5. Hailey’s is located at 122 W. Mulberry St. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY Apollo 18 On a top-secret moon mission in 1973, two astronauts uncover a deadly secret that explains why NASA never went back. Rated PG-13, 88 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Crime After Crime (###1/2) Compelling documentary from Yoav Potash about, in general, the inequalities of domestic abuse laws, and, specifically, about the case of Debbie Peagler, a woman unfairly imprisoned in California for more than 20 years. Two seemingly unsuited lawyers take up her case and, over a period of years, fight for her acquittal, but not before some unexpected twists. Not rated, 95 minutes, At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen The Debt (###) Three Israeli Mossad agents (Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas and Sam Worthington) in the 1960s must track down and capture, and kill if necessary, a Nazi war criminal hiding in East Germany. Decades later, in 1997, the three agents (now Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson and Ciaran Hinds) have a grievous mistake from their former mission come back to haunt them. Passable political thriller from director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love). Rated R, 114 minutes. Now playing at regional theaters. — B.A. 5 Days of War When combat breaks out between Russia and the Republic of Georgia in 2008, two American journalists and a Georgian teacher caught in the crossfire try to flee to safety while documenting the violence all around them. With Rupert Friend, Richard Coyle, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Val Kilmer. Rated R, 112 minutes. At the Inwood in Dallas. — LAT A Good Old Fashioned Orgy (##1/2) There’s something old-fashioned about this film, but it’s not the orgy. Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck’s R-rated comedy feels more like a Meatballs-era summer romp, the kind we’re generally either too cynical for now or we’ve simply outgrown. Eric (Jason Sudeikis) would like to eradicate inhibition in a generation weaned on psychobabble, Blackberries and Radiohead. When his father decides to sell his East Hampton summer house, Eric and his early-30s friends (Tyler Labine, Martin Starr, Lake Bell, among them), decide to have a last-hurrah orgy.

beatings, unexpected doublecrosses, car chases, and an overriding sense of paranoia. When Kathryn becomes better informed on the situation, she naturally turns indignant, thinking that everything is so obvious it will be a simple matter of cleaning it up. And that’s when she discovers the deep involvement of people from various government agencies around the world, the United Nations, nongovernmental organizations and a still-notorious private contractor. Kondracki weaves these elements into a gripping narrative, albeit by translating some traumatic events into cinematic shorthand. She crams not only all the egregious activities, but
also the clandestine conferences Kathryn has with her few trusted superiors (Vanessa Redgrave and David Strathairn) into a short time frame. She looks over her shoulder constantly, losing faith in those she trusted, just as some of the unfortunate young women were tricked into the sex trade by people they trusted. Kondracki may resort to the too-obvious cliches of this shadowy genre but she successfully conveys the fear. For her part, Weisz carries the film admirably, convincingly registering a wide variety of needed emotions.
Chris Evans starring as the World War II fighting hero. Evans brings an earnest dignity and intelligence to the role of Steve Rogers, a scrawny kid from Brooklyn with dreams of military glory. Red Skull, who’s formed his own splinter group
and built some intimidating weapons. Director Joe Johnston’s film feels weighty and substantial, even in 3-D, and it has a beautiful, sepia-toned, art-deco look about it. The intense new film The Whistleblower asks us to imagine how much worse recovery from such horrors might be if those entrusted with helping instead became more dangerous than the enemy. REAUGH’S
WAY By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor
T
wo things are striking about the art of Frank Reaugh on display at UNT on the Square. The first is how evocative the “dean of Texas painters” was when he put pastel to paper to capture the vastness of the Texas outdoors. The second is how often Reaugh (pronounced “Ray”) worked on a diminutive scale. “Frank Reaugh: Master of Pastel and the Texas Plains” borrows the painter’s work from seven lenders, then puts the work of several of Reaugh students’ onto the wall. Reaugh’s work won the affection of Texas businessmen, students and collectors. He was an Illinois transplant who came to Dallas as a teenager. He won Texans over mostly with his eye, a sharp observer of the landscape’s character. For Reaugh, Texas could be lush in one moment — bathed by an unforgiving sun, but in a glare blunted by an endless canopy of sky — and arid in the next. Longhorn cattle gathered before Reaugh, surviving in spite of water-sapping heat. He also painted Colorado’s Garden of the Gods, with its hulking red rocks and bright blue sky. Herbert Holl, the executive director of the University of North Texas Institute for the Advancement of the Arts, said the Reaugh exhibit is the result of an offer. “Actually, we were approached last year by the Texas State Historical Association [housed at UNT] about doing an exhibition of items from the Torch Energy collection located in Houston,” Holl said. “The owner of that collection, J.P. is on the [association] board. He offered his Frank Reaugh holdings and we accepted.” The historical association is associated with the College of Arts and Sciences, which makes the college a prominent co-sponsor of the exhibition. Holl traveled to look at Reaugh pieces, and selected those he found the most interesting and unique. There are more than 120 pieces by Reaugh in the exhibit, on loan from the National Ranching Heritage Center at Texas Tech University, the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum at West Texas A&M University, the Dallas Historical Society, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Public Library and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Holl said Reaugh’s legacy is seen in “the seriousness and devotion to the beauty he saw in the open expanses and free ranging longhorn cattle he memorialized with his masterful pastel painting.” Holl got to make some connections between the finished pieces and the land that inspired it. “I recently traveled through West Texas and New Mexico and have to admit that, having spent weeks in the presence of Reaugh’s work, I viewed the landscapes with a different eye,” Holl said. “‘Plains’ connotes sameness, flatness and monotony. And yet when you take time to really look at a uncultivated landscape, you discover infinite variety, nuance and even drama. I think Reaugh captured that.” Most of the pieces are in Reaugh’s signature pastel, which the artist could make look like both watercolor and oil. The exhibit also shows off some of the pastels that Reaugh used, developed and patented himself. The exhibit also includes photographs of the collapsible field easel Reaugh developed. Reaugh was as practical as he was inspired, and his teaching including a number of sketching trips. UNT on the Square scored a desk of Reaugh’s from the Torch collection. It’s a huge, bulky piece of furniture, with lots of

cubby spaces and drawers. “Frank Reaugh fashioned it from a square grand piano,” Holl said. The exhibit also includes work by three of his students: Olin Travis, Florence Elliott McClung and Lloyd Goff. Finally, there items related to Reaugh’s life and career, including his desk, personal mementos, letters and one of the folding easels invented and patented by the artist. While Texas has certainly born and bred a number of significant artists, Reaugh is one of the state’s most memorable. “There remains a knowledgeable and passionate following for the man and his work — even a Frank Reaugh Club. The president, Bonnie Rae, came to the show earlier this week. If you want convincing evidence of this, simply Google ‘Frank Reaugh,’” Holl said. Though a lot of the pieces are examples of the eye and hand that made the artist famous, Holl said one particular find — another small piece — has gotten a lot of attention. “There is a small pastel of a storm with a dramatic flash of lightning running through the canvas,” Holl said. “It was serendipity when I pulled it out of the shelf from among hundreds of pieces at Panhandle Plains. People are drawn to it, Texas storms being a shared experience and memory for many of us.” Serendipity and goodwill have made for a broad show celebrating an important artist, Holl said. “A good number of Frank Reaugh devotees from around the state have made their way to Denton, and more than one has commented to me that they have never before seen a Reaugh exhibition of such scope and magnitude,” Holl said. “Significant credit goes to Torch for making this exhibition so comprehensive and impressive.” The show runs through Oct. 1. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday; 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is at 109 N. Elm St. For more information, call 940-369-8257. Admission is free.
