Doing it his way Country artist sees dream realized on his own terms

B

randon Rhyder, singer and author of the hit song “Rock Angel,” will take the stage at Rockin’ Rodeo tonight to show what he’s learned in nine years as a Texas country musician. Growing up in Carthage, though, a music career was always in the back of his mind. “I always thought that it was something unattainable. It wasn’t a real dream to be able to think that I could do something like that,” he said during a recent phone interview. In places such as his father’s machine shop and his grandmother’s house,

Brandon Rhyder Show at 8 p.m. today at Rockin’ Rodeo, 1009 Ave. C. Cover varies. Call 940-565-6611 or visit www.rockinrodeodenton.com.

Rhyder heard the artists — like Conway Twitty and the Highwaymen — who are the foundation of his music. Still, he didn’t learn to play guitar until his last year in college, when he was ready to go to work as an industrial engineer. Producing six albums and two No. 1 singles on Texas radio hasn’t been easy, but it hasn’t really felt like work, either, he said. Rhyder left Nashville in

2009 to be closer to his family. “I wanted to get home. I want to write a record here. I want to record it here. And a lot of that was so that all the [band members’] families could be involved in what we’re doing, because a lot of times they don’t get to,” he said. For today’s aspiring musicians, Rhyder said, there is really only one thing you have to do to get noticed. “You have to be yourself. You have to write your own songs,” he said. “The biggest thing is just finding your own way.” — Tim Monzingo

O

n July 3, North Texas literally rained on the Lake Cities Independence Day Parade. The cities of Lake Dallas, Hickory Creek, Corinth and Shady Shores canceled the July event and have now rescheduled it for Labor Day weekend. The National Weather Service says all signs point to a sunny, clear morning for the event. Denton’s Bill Utter Ford is sponsoring $1,000 in cash prizes, including a $500 grand prize for the best overall entry, $200 for the runner-up and $100 for each division winner in the float, vehicle and walking/marching/horseback categories. Canceling the event also meant canceling the event’s entertainment, Eleven Hundred Springs. The country music band is rescheduled to perform at 3 p.m. Sept. 12 during WaterFest 2010 in Lake Dallas’ Willow Grove Park. The parade lineup will begin at 8 a.m. in the west parking lot of Lake Dallas Middle School,

Sunnybrook, a Denton band that combines melody with stream-of-consciousness lyrics, plays Rubber Gloves’ “free week” at Weekly Tape Deck’s showcase on Saturday night.

Bright lights, fierce appetites D

enton’s Sunnybrook is true to its name. Its experimental ambient pop music is an up-tempo rush of light-infused sound.

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

Sunnybrook is a four-piece that leans heavily on software and computer-manipulated sounds to produce its streamof-consciousness tunes. (Where else would the band get lyrics like “I really want to play some disco/and shoot you with a Super Soaker,” if not from the top of the head?) The result is a little bit of rock, a little bit of electronica and a lot of feel-good music that could be the perfect soundtrack for whipping up a buffet for your smart dinner party. Or you can let the deliberate, pulsing songs do their thing while reading Cormac McCarthy, or The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. (It wouldn’t be too weird to hear Sunnybrook bumping in the background at

The Virgin Wolves, a North Texas four-piece, like their rock shaken, not stirred. a Parisian discotheque, either). Sounds like: OMD grew up, befriended Jesus Jones and then went backpacking across Europe. Details: The band plays at 8 p.m. Saturday at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 411 E. Sycamore St. Sunnybrook shares the stage with Mind Spiders, Melting Seasons and Land Mammals. Saturday is the second-tolast day of Rubber Gloves’ “free week,” and the Saturday night

show is presented by music blog Weekly Tape Deck. Doors open at 9 p.m. Music starts shortly afterward. No cover. If the Virgin Wolves sound like 100 pounds of carnivore with sharp teeth and a major appetite, then the North Texas blues-rock outfit labeled itself well. And yet the wolves do more than blues-rock. Blues-rock is

the stuff of Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ Top and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. The Virgin Wolves play it more a little alt-punk. There’s the chip-on-the-shoulder attitude (take this lyric: “I’m a black sheep with a black eye”) and the open-throated howl of Janis Joplin or Susan Tedeschi. The Wolves are appropriate for those who have an affection for Eric Clapton, B.B. King and The Who. With the Virgin Wolves, soul and rock are on tap. Rock fiends will find enough reasons to lose their minds. Sounds like: Gossip got a little tipsy on Beale Street while paying tribute to the Rolling Stones. Or SleaterKinney added a pinch of pop to a Sex Pistols cover tune. Details: Catch the band Saturday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St., with the Eastern Sea, opening for Denton’s Young & Brave. Music starts at 10 p.m. Cover costs $5. Show is 18 and up. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY

Going the Distance (###) This surprisingly funny romantic comedy delivers some raunchy Hangoverstyle humor in a familiar package. A couple (Drew Barrymore and Justin Long) meet in New York and fall for each other. She must relocate to San Francisco, but they do their best to maintain a long-distance romance. The unexceptional narrative gives way to crackling, R-rated dialogue. With Christina Applegate. Rated R, 102 minutes. — Boo Allen Machete (###) Stylish if uneven action-comedy spoof from director Robert Rodriguez gives a star turn to Danny Trejo as an assassin who is presumed dead by a Mexican drug kingpin (Steven Seagal), only to become an unlikely hero during a fight for immigration rights during the re-election campaign of a conservative Texas senator (Robert De Niro). But Rodriguez never engages in much social commentary, preferring to take comedic jabs and stage creatively violent killings. The quirky cast helps the filmmaker offer several big laughs. Rated R, 105 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1 (###1/2) The second part of the Mesrine saga picks up where the first left off, as Jacques Mesrine returns in handcuffs from his exploits in Canada and proceeds to break out of a French jail — several times — and then go on to rob banks, kidnap and commit various other crimes. Nonstop action, dark humor and a knockout performance from Vincent Cassel in the title role make this highly entertaining fare. At the Magnolia and Angelika Plano. — B.A. Soul Kitchen (###) Modestly amusing German comedy is a delightful change of pace for Turkish filmmaker Fatih Akin (The Edge of Heaven). It follows the struggles of a Greek chef (Adam Bousdoukos) to keep his Hamburg restaurant afloat, from his hiring of an eccentric new chef to a former classmate trying to trick him into selling the property to a local band that draws in the crowds. There's nothing especially deep or profound here, but Akin shows his versatility with a breezy comedy that overcomes its familiarity with some fun characters. Not rated, 99 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. The Tillman Story (####1/2)

The American

By Boo Allen Film Critic

Judging by The American, it must be terrible to be a hit man. You’re constantly looking over your shoulder. You don’t trust anyone. And you’re constantly on the move. Not to mention, no dental benefits and a shaky retirement plan. Director Anton Corbijn successfully conveys this consistent state of paranoia in his stylish new film. But he does so at a loss of momentum that sucks the life from the movie. As a result, The American may marginally succeed, but it bogs Riveting, thought-provoking documentary about Pat Tillman, the NFL star who became a soldier and later was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan. Specifically, it follows Tillman's parents and their efforts to expose the U.S. Army for covering up the facts behind Tillman's death, then using his story as a patriotic propaganda tool. Filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev proves himself an adept

down in its unceasing effort to portray the main protagonist as a man of mystery agonizing over past grievances. Jack (George Clooney), the American, never says much and rarely changes expressions. He travels from Sweden in the opening sequence that sees him swiftly dispatching of some shadowy pursuers to Italy, where he travels among several small villages. Conveniently, in investigative journalist while at the same time allowing Tillman's true story to be told through his family. The result is intense and infuriating. Rated R, 94 minutes. these picturesque little haunts, he encounters a series of mysterious, beautiful women. He acts furtively, casting glances of suspicion at everyone he meets and barely engaging anyone in conversation. Eventually, he gathers the materials to create a high-powered, made-to-order rifle for one of his laconic beauties. Is Jack a hit man or a weapons manufacturer? When Jack (now calling himself Edward) becomes involved with a local prostitute, it looks like Corbijn, working from Rowan Joffe’s screenplay, might finally dish some juice on Jack’s background. But, alas, the back stories remain hazy and we can only

assume that grim-faced Jack is just one bad dude. Unfortunately, that character deficiency also means it is hard to care about Jack. Since The American concerns itself with a hit man, it obviously holds a few action scenes. But director Corbijn never caters to his audience or to mass tastes for explosions and car chases. He keeps the tone melancholy and the pace funereal. But he also delivers a somber character study devoid of artifice. Clooney suffices in the role because it never challenges.

Kitty Galore Cats and dogs unite to take on a nutty feline bent on global domination. With James Marsden, Nick Nolte and Christina Applegate. Rated PG, 82 minutes. — The Associated Press Despicable Me (###) Crisply animated CGI comedy about an insecure supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell) who wants to be renowned for his evil deeds, yet discovers it’s

easier to walk the straight and narrow when his heart is melted by three little girls he adopts as part of a sinister plan to steal the moon and upstage an evil rival. The hip voice cast and quirky periphery characters are a plus, and while the film takes a while to find its footing, there are plenty of solid laughs to be had as

COVER STORY hé Macy is a selfprofessed “thriftstore-aholic.” The advertising executive at the Denton Record-Chronicle had the ideal excuse to indulge in her addiction when she volunteered to fill her younger sister’s freshman dorm room with thrift and consignment store finds. It also gave her an opportunity to make good use of her interior design talent. So on a recent Saturday, Ché, her mom and her sister went on a shopping spree. “We hopped in the car and I had a list of thrift stores in the area, and [we] just went mad!” Ché Macy said. Why buy used?

“Price point, definitely,” she said. “You can find things of higher quality at a thrift store for much cheaper than you could, say, at a Walmart or a Target.” “I like whimsical things and the eclectic look,” Ché said. “I also find really unique things that I didn’t even know I wanted [and] I didn’t even know I was looking for.” Ché’s younger sister, Mandy Macy, a music performance freshman at the University of North Texas, was “super excited” to have the help. Ché helped decorate Mandy’s room at home a few years ago. “Everything she did just looked fantastic,” Mandy said. “I love the fashion sense my sister has.” “I wanted to get her fun stuff as far as colors are concerned because her room at home is a little girly, a little young,” Ché said. “I knew it was time for a change.” Decorating Mandy’s dorm room allowed Ché to be creative. “We couldn’t find prints that went with the color scheme of the room,” she said. “[So we] tore out pictures from magazines and stuck them in the frames,” Ché Macy said. Ché was disappointed that she couldn’t find suitable bedding, curtains and hardware during their shopping expedition and ended up purchasing them at Walmart and

She was also annoyed by long lines at the chain stores. “I just hate the crowds and the hustle and bustle of going to those big stores, especially right when school’s starting. It’s crazy,” Ché said. “All the thrift store employees were really helpful,” she said. “If we See THRIFT on 10

ingly simplistic, but with plenty of pretty scenery. Rated PG-13, 135 minutes. — B.A. The Expendables (#1/2) Brawn dominates brains in this formulaic testosterone fest noteworthy for its ensemble of erstwhile action-hero types including Sylvester Stallone (who also co-wrote and directed), Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and others, including a couple of surprise cameos. The plot involves a group of assassins on a secret yet dangerous CIA mission in South America, but story takes a clear backseat to shootouts and explosions that grow tiresome. Rated R, 103 minutes. — T.J. Get Low (####) Low-key character piece elevated by a superb lead performance from Robert Duvall, playing a hermit who emerges from a life in the Tennessee woods with a wish to arrange a living funeral so he can exorcise demons from his past. The script (remarkably based on a true story) is thin on its own, but director Aaron Schneider smartly lets his actors — including Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black — take command. The result is deliberately paced but ultimately poignant. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. — T.J. Inception (###1/2) The latest mindbending thriller from visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) is about Dom (Leonardo DiCaprio), a man who specializes in the illegal practice of extraction, or stealing secrets from a person’s mind

while the victim is dreaming. In what he hopes will be his last job, Dom must implant an idea in the dream of the heir to a corporation (Cillian Murphy) rather than extract it. At times, Inception threatens to collapse under the weight of its own ambition, but in a summer of sequels and retreads, the level of inspiration alone is praiseworthy. Terrific supporting cast includes Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph GordonLevitt, Michael Caine and Tom Berenger. Rated PG-13, 148 minutes. — T.J. The Last Exorcism (###) Shrewd, suspenseful but ultimately nonsensical horror flick that serves as refreshing change of pace, combining elements of genre pioneers such as Rosemary’s Baby and The Blair Witch Project. Cotton (Patrick Fabian), a charismatic Texas priest, has made a career out of performing exorcisms without believing in them. Before he retires, he agrees to take on the case of a Louisiana man convinced that his teenage daughter (Ashley Bell) is possessed without having any direct evidence. Director Daniel Stamm achieves a clever balance between mocking formulas about demonic possession and religious fundamentalism while still delivering some of the cheap thrills that audiences will expect. Rated PG13, 87 minutes. — T.J. Nanny McPhee Returns (###) Emma Thompson returns in the title role, and supplies the screenplay, for this sequel to the 2005 original

based on Christianna Brand's characters. A mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal) in World War II tends to her three children and a visiting niece and nephew while the father is at war. Enter Nanny McPhee, who makes everything right. Director Susanna White aims directly at kids with broad humor and plenty of cuddly animatronic animals. Rated PG, 108 minutes. — Boo Allen The Other Guys A detective more interested in paperwork (Will Ferrell) and a street-tough cop (Mark Wahlberg) are partnered up. With Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — The Associated Press Piranha 3D Spring break turns gory when an underground tremor releases hundreds of prehistoric, carnivorous fish into Lake Victoria, a popular resort destination. With Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames and Jerry O’Connell. Rated R, 89 minutes. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (##) This outrageously high-energy comedy, based on the series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, has a visual style that’s fearless if nothing else. British director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) swings for the fences, even if he whiffs. Scott (Michael Cera) is a quirky musician trying to get over a bad breakup when he meets a new girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), whom he must win over by defeating her seven exboyfriends in a series of video game showdowns. The story and actors

seem an afterthought to the frenetic camerawork and stylistic trickery. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — T.J. The Switch Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) is single woman who, despite her neurotic best friend Wally’s (Jason Bateman) objections, decides it’s time to have a baby with a little help from a charming sperm donor (Patrick Wilson). Rated PG-13, 101 minutes. Takers (##) Stylish but generic thriller starring hip-hop artist T.I. as an ex-con who rejoins his old gang of bank robbers for one last heist but has his motives questioned, and the hardened cop (Matt Dillon) who has been frustrated by the criminals' high-tech elusiveness for years. The film maintains a breathless pace, with some impressive stunts and chase sequences along the way. But the screenplay is no Ocean's Eleven in its slick attempt to capture camaraderie among thieves. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — T.J. Vampires Suck (#) And so does this movie. That was an easy one, but this latest spoof from the directors of Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans is shockingly uninspired. This time the primary target is the Twilight series and other vampire movies, along with pokes at contemporary teenage television shows. But the sight gags and one-liners are hopelessly flat and stale, perhaps a product of YouTube and other such innovations rendering films of this sort obsolete. Rated PG13, 77 minutes. — T.J.
