Alfred Hitchcock was a master of suspense, but his cheeky wit not only lent dimension to his films — it made his material ripe for a comic retelling. In The 39 Steps, a farce adapted from Hitchcock’s 1935 thriller, four actors play a legion of characters.

Fit for farce DCT translates Hitchcock’s ‘39 Steps’ for theater t’s Greater Tuna meets master filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. The 39 Steps fleshes out a story full of characters with just four actors. Denton Community Theatre opens its 2011-12 season with the popular adaptation of

Hitchcock’s 1935 movie — and it’s all reframed as a farce. Denton actor and director Sean Frith takes the helm of the Patrick Barlow play. Richard Hannay is thrust into a topsy-turvy world after a chance encounter with a beautiful spy. He runs from police, not to mention would-be assassins, while trying to uncover a plot to steal British military secrets. Local stage veterans Mike Strecher, Mark Jadrych and

Johnny Bryant join newcomer Klarice McCarron in playing all the characters in the farce. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday and Sept. 16-17, with matinees at 2 p.m. Sunday and Sept. 18. All shows are at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $18 for seniors age 62 and older, and $10 for children and students. To make reservations, call 940-382-1915.

lashy vintage cars and trucks will once again line the downtown Square this weekend. The gleaming chrome and curved heavy metal are perhaps the chief emblems of the Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza, the Denton Main Street Association’s fall celebration. Slip inside the Courthouse on the Square any time between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and you can pick up some tips on the treasures that could be at home in your closet, attic or a safety deposit box. Four lectures will cover everything from antique diamonds to vintage purses, from tips and tools for collectors to how to organize an estate sale. John Bennett, owner of John Bennett Estate Sales, will lead a workshop on coordinating and shopping estate sales. Estate sales are staged by surviving family members or estate executors after individuals have died. Living estate sales are staged by people and families who are “downsizing,” Bennett said, and who are moving into nursing homes or apartments. Bennett said these sales are often popular with antique dealers. Others, he said, like to shop estate A ’57 Chevy rolls around the Square during last year’s Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza. WORKSHOPS

Oldies sales in upscale neighborhoods. “A lot of people will shop in those areas because they’re looking for secondhand appliances,” he said. In his workshop, Bennett said he’ll give tips on how to stage a successful estate sale — the kind that sends a loved one’s worldly possessions off to new homes or antique stores. “People have estate sales for different reasons,” he said. “They can save the estate money, but sometimes, family members have houses full of stuff themselves, and have nowhere to put their loved one’s items.” Bennett will break down the basics — such as the best local areas to host a sale, and when to contact a professional to consult on your sale. Georgia Caraway, a local antiques specialist, will steer accessory hounds and Kate Spade acolytes through the word of vintage clutches, messenger bags and handbags. Expect beading and luxurious linings. Joe Amyx, co-owner of Amyx Fine Jewelry on the Square, will give a workshop on antique diamonds. Before you get grandmother’s wedding set out, the American jewelry market considers an antique diamond to be 100 years old or older. Those who attend the workshop will get some diamond history. He’ll bring enthusiasts from diamonds and their uses before they were cut by the human hand and changed for allure — shaved here and there

in tiny-but-perfect proportions designed to reflect light. Amyx will explain how European royals created the craving for what we now call “bling.” “With diamonds, everything up through the art deco period is considered antique,” Amyx said. “We’re talking about everything up through the 1930s.” The 1940s saw the beginning of World War II, a period when jewelry settings skewed toward rose gold and other lesser-used metals thanks to scarcity. That jewelry gets the label of “vintage” or “period.” Amyx said he’ll have photos of antique diamonds available in the store so that people can see examples up close. When it comes to assessing a stone’s value, new stones are rated according to “the four C’s” — color, cut, clarity and carat. Those things apply to weighing the worth of an antique stone — something Amyx will be on hand to do after the workshop should anyone have a family jewel they’d like to appraise. But there are different considerations. When he appraises an antique diamond for cut, he’s not considering the shape first and foremost — he’s looking for the skill of the jeweler. “We’re looking for the angle of the cuts, the proportion,” he said. The more precise, the higher the value might be. “Attic Treasures” information appraisals return, so visitors can bring antiques and collectibles, jewelry, clocks, china, silver, glass and more. Appraisers can’t give informa-

eligious organizations have a short list of complaints when they confront the film industry: The faithful are either ignored altogether, or when cameras turn their way, they’re mocked or ridiculed. In her first attempt at directing, Vera Farmiga errs — or sins if you prefer — not because she ignores or mocks. Instead, the Oscar-nominated actress falters in her directorial debut for another reason: Higher Ground is deadly boring. Farmiga bases her film on the memoir from Carolyn Briggs, who shares screenwriting credits. Farmiga wrestles with the story from the start,

clumsily chronicling the life of Corrine, played by Farmiga as an adult and by her sister (Taissa Farmiga) as the younger Corrine. Corrine experiences several traumas and disappointments over the years, until, finally, she and Ethan split despite the constant pressure from the church to stay together. As director, Farmiga plunges straight ahead, often picking up plotlines and dropping them without explanation or background. When she settles on a particular time frame, her scenes linger as if the actors are struggling to improvise. Because of this jerky approach, Higher Ground never flows but lurches along. It never gives us time to connect with the characters or with the thin story. Farmiga the director tepidly his family — meet in the ring at a big mixed-martial-arts tournament. The director of La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element serves as co-writer and producer here. Colombiana feels more hammy and muscular, though — but knowingly so, and that’s what makes it solid, late-summer escapist fun. Zoe Saldana stars as Cataleya, who saw her parents killed in front of her in the slums of Bogota. Fifteen years later, with the help of her Uncle Emilio (Cliff Curtis), she’s transformed herself into a highly efficient professional assassin in the U.S., but she still seeks revenge against her parents’ killers. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. — AP Conan the Barbarian (#1/2) The knowing sense of big, ridiculous fun that marked the 1982 original is gone, and in its place we get a selfserious series of generic sword battles and expository conversations. There’s very little that’s pleasurable in this new Conan, aside from allowing us to ogle the muscular, 6-foot-5 physique of up-and-coming action star Jason Momoa. Once again, the Cimmerian warrior is on a mission to avenge the deaths of his father (Ron Perlman, not being put to his best use) and the rest of his village. He’s after the evil warlord Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang). Rated R, 102 minutes. — AP Cowboys and Aliens (###1/2) Daniel Craig stars as a disoriented cowboy in the Old West who joins forces with a local honcho (Harrison Ford) to fight off an attack of aliens. Director Jon Favreau takes his job seriously and, except for small doses of black humor, does his best to mix the two genres. With Sam Rockwell, Olivia Wilde and Paul Dano. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — B.A. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) wrote and produced this big-screen remake of a 1973 British TV movie, about a little girl (Bailee Madison) whose parents (Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes) don’t believe her when she tells them there are all sorts of nasty creatures hiding in the basement of their new home. — McClatchy Newspapers Final Destination 5 Survivors of a disastrous bridge collapse try to continue to cheat death. With Emma Bell, Nicholas D’Agosto, Miles Fisher and Arlen Escarpeta. In 3-D. Rated R, 92 minutes. — LAT Fright Night In this remake of the 1985 film, a popular student trying to

Jennifer Ehle plays a scientist searching for a vaccine when a deadly virus sweeps the world, killing millions, in Contagion.

Going viral By Christy Lemire AP Movie Critic

T

he calm is what’s so startling in Contagion — the cool precision with which Steven Soderbergh depicts a deadly virus that spreads throughout the world, quickly claiming millions of victims. There’s no great panic in his tone, no hysteria. Characters become increasingly confused and frustrated, they struggle to survive and then die in a matter-offact way. Even the eventual instances of looting and rioting that crop up — as they are wont to do in these kinds of movies when societal rules have long since been abandoned — feel like blips of intensity, understandable reactions to an incomprehensible situation. Working from a script by Scott Z. Burns, who also wrote his 2009 comedy The Informant!, Soderbergh takes us from suburban living rooms to labs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to remote Asian villages with equally clear-eyed realism. The attention to detail — and to

enjoy his senior year in high school discovers that his new neighbor is a vampire and must find a way to vanquish him. With Anton Yelchin,

Contagion Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. Opens Friday.

the infinite ways germs can spread that we probably don’t want to think about — provide the sensation that this sort of outbreak really could happen right now. Contagion begins with Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, Beth, coughing as she reaches into a bowl of peanuts at an airport bar on her way home to Minneapolis from a business trip in Hong Kong. This is Day 2, we are told, and she will end up being Patient Zero. With the help of a low-key but propulsive electronic score, Soderbergh steadily focuses on the hands as he jumps from Chicago to Tokyo to London in these early scenes, fluidly revealing how we pass our credit card to a waitress or grasp a bus railing or press an elevator button. As Soderbergh did in the superior Traffic, he interChristopher Mintz-Plasse, Colin Farrell and Toni Collette. Written by Marti Noxon. Directed by Craig Gillespie. Rated R, 112 minutes. —

Calm, realism used to chilling effect in new film twines various story lines to give us a complete picture of the devastation. Matt Damon, as Paltrow’s stoic husband, Mitch, tries to stay strong and protect his teenage daughter as it becomes clear that they’re both immune. Jude Law, believably skeevy as an online journalist with questionable ethics, digs for the truth of the story — but government scientists are just as keen on stopping the spread of information as they are the disease itself. Despite all the big names crammed together, Jennifer Ehle might just steal this thing as Laurence Fishburne’s right-hand woman at the CDC, Dr. Ally Hextall, who’s racing to find a vaccine even as the number of dead skyrockets. Like the film itself, she’s got an irresistible cool about her. But she’s also so confident and radiates such no-nonsense intelligence, she commands the screen every time she shows up. Her performance represents one of many elements of Contagion that will make you stop and think. And then wash your hands. LAT A Good Old Fashioned Orgy (##) A group of friends who have known each other since high school and

have various crushes on each other decide to have a Labor Day orgy. The lame film depends on obvious jokes and even more obvious embarrassing situations for laughs. Jason Sudeikis plays the nominal ringleader who offers his house while also trying to keep the event secret from his potential new girlfriend (Leslie Bibb). With Lake Bell, Tyler Labine, Michelle Borth and others. Rated R, 95 minutes. — B.A. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (####) Director David Yates propels Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) through the task of finding the last three horcruxes, magical objects containing the final pieces of Lord Voldemort’s soul. The Boy Who Lived has a final standoff with He Who Must Not Be Named, and the magical world hangs in the balance. With Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon. Rated PG-13, 180 minutes. — Lucinda Breeding The Help (##1/2) Tate Taylor directs from Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel about life in early 1960s Jackson, Miss. All the young white women except one (Emma Stone) treat the African-American help atrociously, particularly Aibileen (Viola Davis). The excess of subplots may mar the film’s rhythm, but they provide for an able supporting cast of Allison Janney, Mary Steenburgen, Sissy Spacek, Aunjanue Ellis and others. Rated PG-13, 137 minutes. — B.A. One Day (##1/2) Director Lone Scherfig (An Education) directs from David Nicholls’ novel and screenplay about the quarter-century or so relationship of a couple (Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess). They appear in different stages as they are chronicled on the same day over the years. The gimmick works for a while but never disguises the fact that it’s routine material with a twist. Rated PG13, 108 minutes. — B.A. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (##) James Franco stars as a scientist working in a laboratory experiment with chimps on an Alzheimer’s cure that he eventually tries on his father (John Lithgow). One chimp is raised by Franco and his father before things go wrong and the chimps attack humans and run wild through San Francisco. Silly redo of the same old Apes-stuff is just more monkey business. Rated PG-13, 105 minutes. — B.A. Shark Night 3-D A group of college students expecting a weekend of fun at a Louisiana lake island cabin find themselves terrorized by sharks. With Sara Paxton, Dustin Milligan, Chris Carmack and Joel David Moore. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. — LAT Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World A retired secret agent (Jessica Alba) who has her hands full with a new baby and twin step-kids is called back into action to battle a supervillain and gets help from her family. With Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook and Joel McHale. Written and directed by Robert Rodriguez. In 3-D. Rated PG, 88 minutes. — LAT 30 Minutes or Less A pizza delivery guy (Jesse Eisenberg) is kidnapped by two wannabe criminals (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) and forced to rob a bank. With Aziz Ansari. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). Rated R, 83 minutes. — LAT
