veryone is invited to a birthday bash for distinguished composer Larry Austin, who turns 80 this Sunday. To celebrate, the University of North Texas College of Music is throwing not just a party for the retired professor, but a concert of his music. Apropos to the occasion, the free program will be presented by the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia in the Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theater. Not only was Austin a director of CEMI during his tenure at UNT, but he also helped establish the theater. Austin received two degrees from UNT and taught at the university from 1978 to 1996. His compositions span multiple

genres and styles, including avant-garde, improvisational, electronic and computer music, and his works have been performed by such noted orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony and National Symphony, and in Asia, Europe and the U.K. “Larry is interested in fixedmedia pieces — what we used to call tape music — where the music is recorded electronically and presented over loudspeakers,” said music professor Joseph Klein, chairman of UNT’s Division of Composition Studies. “This is first concert we’ve had exclusively of his music in a long time,” Klein said. Among the performers are College of Music dean James Scott on flute and piccolo;
Steven Harlos, UNT coordinator of piano and collaborative piano; and UNT alumnus Steve Duke, guest saxophonist. Veiled Resonance, a 2008 piece written by guest composer Elainie Lillios, a former student of Austin, is also on the program. Klein said Austin picked the pieces for his birthday concert. “He likes to be involved in the performance aspect,” Klein said. “He collaborates with the performers. He does the tech. He’ll probably be sitting at the mixing board. It would be really hard to put a program like this together without him being involved.” He said Austin has stayed busy in retirement. “He’s been as active, if not more so, in retirement than he was when he was teaching here,” Klein said. “He’s got performances happening constantly all over the world.” Of Sunday’s concert, Klein said: “There will be some surprises, mostly for Larry.”

UNT gallery takes note of grads, former faculty UNT on the Square
By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor
A little shine, a lot color and finely wrought texture are in the house at UNT on the Square, the snug University of North Texas gallery on Elm Street. The gallery has two exhibitions running. “Ceramics x 5” shows off the work of alumni from UNT College of Visual Arts and Design: Chris Gray, Bart Fetz, Karen D. Hamilton, Shannon Sullivan and Dave Zdrazil. “Carlos Merida: Carnival in Mexico and Mexican Costume” is a rare look at the printmaker’s gift for space and an eye that celebrated color. His exhibition runs in conjunction with Denton’s Fiesta-on-the-Square later this month. The ceramics exhibit isn’t exhaustive, but it does give a sampling of the range ceramists achieve. Chris Gray responds to the tradition of vessel-making with reliable skill and technical finesse. The pieces he lent to the show, though, betray his awareness of graphic design, and its ability to bring the playful clarity of semiotics — the art of communicating complicated ideas with simple, universal images — onto the same field with branding. Gray repeats the profile of a crow on his vessels and his pieces, a clever way

Merida taught at UNT in the 1940s. to claim good old tableware with his personal stamp. Sullivan takes the craft of ceramics and puts it up on the
wall. Are we seeing the suggestion of a cross-section of something? Say, a graft of flesh magnified under a microscope until
it becomes an abstract field of pods, follicles or bubbles? Sullivan glazes pockets of space with contrasting colors — all of them whispers of color rather than shouts — and pleases the viewer with smooth curves and easy dips. Topped with transparent glass or plastic, Sullivan’s work reels us in but won’t let us touch the pockets of ceramics. Zdrazil’s work seems to be the story of pottery. Ceramics are a mix of earth, water, air and fire. Zdrazil’s platters look as if aerial photos of lakes were carved out, glazed and thrust in a kiln. Green, deep blue and browns give a topographical touch to his series of pieces. Merida’s 15 prints were brought out of the Rare Book and Texana Collections. Merida, an important Guatemalan artist who taught at UNT during the 1940s, isn’t as known as Diego Rivera, but Merida collaborated with Rivera on murals. He moved away from figurative work before merging Mayan and indigenous ideas in his work. The exhibitions run through Oct. 1.

Take the funky bass lines from Incubus or the Red Hot Chili Peppers, stir in some high-speed, jazz/metal guitar fingerings and a splash of the music heard in a street market in New Delhi or Damascus, and you’d be close to the sounds produced by Consider the Source. On Saturday, the New York band will play the Boiler Room with its selfdescribed sci-fi Middle Eastern funk sound that’s sure to surprise listeners with a fluid, dynamic jam session that plays off the crowd’s vigor.

eff Allen will play the Mule Barn in Justin on Saturday, playing the type of songs that have driven the country scene for decades — songs about the common man, hard work and old-fashioned fun. At 15, Allen picked up an old guitar in his grandparents’ home, not knowing his story would be the stuff country songs are made of. “Through the summer, when I was working for my parents’ cabinet shop, I would go down there during my lunch breaks and play,” he said. “I would go down there for dinner and play

as long as I could, until eventually my grandfather saw that I had taken enough liking to it that he just gave me the guitar.” In typical Texas country fashion, Allen bucked the conventional ways of learning music. When he didn’t agree with the lessons of his guitar teacher, Allen moved beside the radio and taught himself by picking along to what he heard on the airwaves. Taking the stage wasn’t always easy for him. It took time, dedication and some good advice to get him in front of a crowd. “Somebody said to me one time, everything you want is right outside your comfort
zone, so I forced myself on Fridays and Saturdays, no matter what, to kind of overcome my fear,” he said. It was during a festival in his hometown when he decided music was his passion. At Oktoberfest in Canton, Allen sang “Jailhouse Rock” with an Elvis Presley cover band. After that, he said, he was hooked, and with the support of his family, he got serious as a musician. Allen said he started off trying to imitate other country artists, but he’s realizing that his own music is what people want. “The older that I’ve got, and only in the last four or five years, I’ve realized there’s already a Merle Haggard and there’s already a Dwight Yoakam, so I just need to do what I do,” he said.

Hard-core band Coliseum leaves the ring bloody Coliseum calls Louisville, Ky., home, but the trio could put its steel-toed boots on necks at CBGB, if the Manhattan club was still taking body slams from screaming punk upstarts. Vocalist and guitarist Ryan Patterson, bassist Mike Pascal and drummer Carter Wilson pour rage and white heat into a punishing barrage of punkmetal. Patterson’s vocals are half-lost in the grinding of his guitar. Wilson leaves the chute and plays at two speeds: Mach 2 or not at all.

The machismo is prime for a WWE wrestling commercial, but Coliseum has too much punk credibility to plaster its jams along a backdrop for muscle head drama. Critics have compared Coliseum to Pantera. For locals who are partial to Denton’s PVC Street Gang, well, Coliseum plays faster and just as heavy. The trio plays Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Tuesday. The band is touring in support of House With a Curse, its third full-length album. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY Bran Nue Dae (##) A soundtrack in search of a movie, this crowd-pleasing musical from Australia sees its toe-tapping production numbers compromised by a threadbare narrative and shabby construction. The coming-of-age story follows an Aboriginal teen (Rocky McKenzie) who escapes from his strict smalltown religious upbringing in 1969 in search of adventure and the girl of his dreams. It’s tedious whenever the music isn’t playing, although Geoffrey Rush has some amusing over-the-top moments as a punitive priest. Rated PG-13, 81 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Todd Jorgenson Flipped (##) Slight and shamelessly cute tale of young romance from director Rob Reiner follows eighthgraders Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) and Juli (Madeline Carroll), who are nextdoor neighbors with the ultimate love-hate relationship. It’s a simple story of childhood innocence with a gimmicky construction that sees each of its vignettes told from the perspectives of both children in a hesaid-she-said kind of way. The film has nostalgic charm to spare, but the construction becomes tiresome without more depth in its screenplay. Rated PG, 89 minutes. — T.J. Legendary (##) Wrestling substitutes for karate in this Karate Kid-like, formulaic family drama. A pickedupon Oklahoma high school student (Devon Graye) learns how to defend himself, and gains recognition when he goes out for the wrestling team and has success. He initially demurs because of the shadow hanging over him by his late father and older brother, both one-time local wrestling legends. Ordinary and predictable. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. At the Inwood. — Boo Allen Lebanon (###) This taut Israeli film stays mostly inside a tank with a group of Israeli soldiers as they advance into enemy territory at the start of the 1982 Lebanon war. Their succession of suspenseful encounters are all cleverly rendered by writer-director Samuel Maoz. He creates and maintains a constant feeling of terror and danger. Rated R, 93 minutes. At the Magnolia. — B.A.

Phoenix’s meteoric descent caught by Affleck in new film By Boo Allen Film Critic
Fans of car wrecks, train wrecks, earthquakes, tsunamis and other disasters will enjoy I’m Still Here, a new documentary from Casey Affleck. Better known as an actor, Affleck as documentarian turns his cameras on his brother-in-law, the unnatural disaster known as Joaquin Phoenix. The strange behavior of the Oscar-nominated actor began in late 2008 amid reports that he was giving up his acting career to pursue one in what some might call music. Hounding paparazzi joined with media outlets to convey images of Phoenix, by then sporting a definite Unabomber look. His strange appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, included in the film, reinforced the idea that Phoenix had gone over the edge. Affleck chronicles almost the entire initial period of when Phoenix seemed to be barreling out of control, which will naturally set Affleck up for charges of exploitation. Which he does, of course, and it adds to the film’s human-interest angle that Phoenix feels no hesitation, on camera, to frolic with naked ladies of the night, snort what looks like cocaine, smoke Roberts has found eternal happiness, true bliss and bodily harmony in Eat Pray Love, the new mind-bogglingly insipid film from director Ryan Murphy, based on Elizabeth Gilbert's autobiography. In only her second starring role of the last six years, America’s Sweetheart plays author Gilbert, as she travels to Italy, India and Bali to find herself after a failed marriage to one man (Billy Crudup) and subsequent relationship with another (James Franco). Mindnumbingly simplistic, but with plenty of pretty scenery. Rated PG-13, 135 minutes. — B.A. The Expendables (#1/2) Brawn dominates brains in this formulaic testosterone-fest noteworthy for its

what looks like marijuana and generally act like a creep. Phoenix has several sycophants who always seem nearby, ready to placate the obstreperous, hot-tempered actor. It seems his greatest pleasures come in smoking and in talking about himself, both of which he
does constantly. But when he truly seems to want to perform hip-hop, he becomes pathetic. Phoenix chases down Sean Combs, from New York to Miami to Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. When they finally meet, the reluctant Combs comes off as level-headed and honest — so honest that he eventually tells Phoenix what he does not want to hear: the truth about his marginal musical talent. Since Phoenix and Affleck travel in rarefied Hollywood circles, several well-known personalities appear, most of whom stand perplexed by this
new persona. But the most painful sequences come, first, when Phoenix confronts one of his flunkies about betraying him behind his back to the media, and, second, with a nightclub appearance in Miami that ends with Phoenix jumping into a crowd to attack a heckler, being pulled out by security and led to a bathroom, and then throwing up repeatedly. So, if interested in the unraveling of a porky, uneducated, mumbling, seemingly dense, marginally talented, chainsmoking, temperamental actor, I’m Still Here works.
ensemble of erstwhile action-hero types including Sylvester Stallone (who also co-wrote and directed), Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and others, including a couple of surprise cameos. The plot involves a group of assassins on a secret yet dangerous CIA mission in South America, but story takes a clear backseat to shootouts and explosions that grow tiresome. Rated R, 103 minutes. — T.J. Get Low (####) Low-key character piece elevated by a superb lead performance from Robert Duvall, playing a hermit who emerges from a life in the Tennessee woods with a wish to arrange a living funeral so he
can exorcise demons from his past. The script (remarkably based on a true story) is thin on its own, but director Aaron Schneider smartly lets his actors — including Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black — take command. The result is deliberately paced but ultimately poignant. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. — T.J. Going the Distance (###) This surprisingly funny romantic comedy delivers some raunchy Hangoverstyle humor in a familiar package. A couple (Drew Barrymore and Justin Long) meet in New York and fall for each other. She must relocate to San Francisco, but they do their best to maintain a long-distance romance. The unexceptional narrative gives
way to crackling, R-rated dialogue. With Christina Applegate. Rated R, 102 minutes. — Boo Allen Machete (###) Stylish if uneven action-comedy spoof from director Robert Rodriguez gives a star turn to Danny Trejo as an assassin who is presumed dead by a Mexican drug kingpin (Steven Seagal), only to become an unlikely hero during a fight for immigration rights during the re-election campaign of a conservative Texas senator (Robert De Niro). But Rodriguez never engages in much social commentary, preferring to take comedic jabs and stage creatively violent killings. The quirky cast helps the filmmaker offer several big laughs. Rated R, 105 minutes. — T.J.
I’m Still Here Rated R, 108 minutes. Opens Friday at the Angelika Dallas.
Vintage downtown Arts, Antiques & Autos celebrates what the Square is known for By Ellen Ritscher Sackett Staff Writer
O
rganizers are keeping their fingers crossed that the weather will be beautiful for this year’s Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza this Saturday on Denton’s downtown Square. “I am looking at the forecasts for the weekend, and it looks great,” said event coordinator Christine Gossett. “We are so glad.” “These last two years have been washed out by rain,” she said. “I think some of the rain and clouds this week might make people a little leery about making plans to come.” No worries. The free festival, sponsored by the Denton Main Street Association, will take place, rain or shine, as it has for the past 11 years. According to Gossett, it all began in 1999. “The History Channel Great Race came through Denton, and downtown was a pit stop on that route,” she said. “That day, more than a thousand people came out to see these fantastic antique cars make their stop in downtown, and a new idea for the former county seat Saturday festival was born.” In October 2000, the Denton Main Street Association changed up its traditional fall festival “to reflect more about what downtown was, and to an extent still is today,” Gossett said. “In the past, downtown was the retail business hub of Denton, as well as a crossroads for all vehicle traffic, before the highway was built diverting traffic about the central business district,” she said. “Today downtown is still a central hub of activity and a place where people come to find antique and collectible treasures in several stores around downtown, and the arts still abound in downtown in studios, retail stores and onstage. So, from this, the committee back in 2000 named it the Arts, Antiques & Autos Extravaganza.” Saturday’s opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. at the flagpole on the southwest corner of the Courthouse lawn with the presentation of the colors and

Texas singersongwriter Burton Tyler will take the stage on the east Courthouse lawn following the opening ceremonies, followed by Guitar George and his trio, who will play swing and jump blues from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The Allmost Brothers, an Allman Brothers tribute band, begin performing at 1:45 p.m. and will end just in time for the car show awards ceremony. She said, “I work with volunteers to coordinate and produce the event, and without volunteers working behind the scenes and the support of generous sponsors, these events in downtown would not be possible. I think it’s important for people to know, as we are always in need of volunteers and help each year to make things in downtown happen.” ELLEN RITSCHER SACKETT can be reached at 940-566-6845.
