Fagan’s choreography has a way of defying gravity
arth Fagan makes his living as a choreographer, but his life’s work culminated in helping Broadway and film director Julie Taymor turn the stage into the African savanna. It’s Fagan who lent movement to The Lion King’s chill-inducing puppetry, and Fagan who coached
dancers to imagine how they might move in an animal’s body. The man behind the Broadway magic still has a dance company, and Garth Fagan Dance will perform at 8 p.m. Sept. 22 at Margo Jones Performance Hall at Texas Woman’s University. The troupe is
brought to Denton by the University of North Texas Fine Arts Series. Fagan has kept his work relevant thanks to mixing the technical exactness of ballet with the imagination of modern dance. The Jamaican artist adds a this-and-that to his dances, bringing ingredients of
Harlem and the urban Caribbean into play. Tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for UNT faculty, staff, seniors and non-UNT students and free for UNT students. For reservations, call the UNT Union Information Center at 940-565-3805.

rmonia Celeste is Italian for “heavenly harmony.” Not an easy name to live up to, said founding member Dianna Grabowski, but the ensemble gives its early music repertoire its all — with all the drama and ornamentation that portends. “There are these crazy, acrobatic things to do with our voices. It’s very — how should I say this? — not restrained,” Grabowski said. The ensemble performs 7:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2200 N. Bell Ave. Tickets are $10 for adults and seniors and $7 for students. Armonia Celeste is a touring group with most of its roots in North Texas. Singers Grabowski and Rebecca Beasley earned graduate degrees from the University of North Texas College of Music, and Sarah Griffiths is a doctoral candidate at UNT. Lutenist and conductor

the contest, Grabowski said, they found a wealth of music from the Barberini court. “A cardinal who became the pope [Antonio] Baberini used his papacy to fund his family’s projects,” Grabowski said. The family had talent, and it’s from the secular music performed in the court that produced the program, “Udite Amanti — Lovers Beware!” “All of the music is about love — the trials of being in love, the danger of being in love,” Grabowski said. “We sort of try to ride the line in performance. It’s sort of performed in recital style. We’re not trying to create a scene or act, but we pay close attention to what’s happening in the music.” The music in the program is secular. Grabowski said it was written for the courts — essentially pop music for the well-heeled of 17th-century Italian nobility. Tickets for the Denton performance will be sold at the door. fights. The Real Drags and Bar Band made crafty use of “vs.” to riff on the ongoing rock ’n’ roll debate over who’s the best band ever: the lads from Liverpool or the working-class boys from London. Dwayne Ray has been a Beatles fan since childhood. “The Beatles’ Rock ’n’ Roll Music: Volume I was the first album I ever bought when I was like 10,” said Ray, who might be best known to local music buffs as a member of the now-defunct band Jackson 8. Ray calls it “a really important record,” compiling songs — mostly covers — that the Beatles played in their early rock ’n’ roll days. The same year he got the album, he met Brad Simpson, who’ll be playing bass guitar during Friday’s show. “That album really got both of us into doing what we do now,” Ray said. “When we were in eighth grade, we decided to get guitars. This is the first time I’ve played with Brad in something like 15 years.” It’s also only the third time in as many years that Ray will play live on a Denton stage. He’s the proud pop of a 2-yearold, and dad duty has put playing gigs on back-burner status. Ray said the Beatles cornered the market on rock ’n’ roll music thanks to clever songwriting and garden-variety gumption. “At the time that rock ’n’ roll came out, back in the early 1950s, people were listening to a different kind of music, more like easy-listening kind of stuff,” he said. “I’m thinking along the lines of Dion and Pat Boone. Now Gene Vincent [“Be-Bop-a-Lula”] was making harder music than the Beatles, but they are pretty much the band that made harder music and made it radio-friendly.”

“The British artists I’ve seen and met, they are never afraid to try to remake things. They don’t mind stealing things and telling you where they stole it from.” — Grady Don Sandlin, drummer Ray still owns the cassette tape of that fateful Beatles album. “It still plays. It’s yellow instead of white, but it still plays,” he said. Ray said it was a conversation with well-respected and versatile Denton drummer Grady Don Sandlin that led to two bands playing a show of music from Beatles and Rolling Stones albums. Under the name the Real Drags, Ray’s band won’t copy the Beatles so much as inhabit the music as a group of devotees. Sandlin said he’d already had satisfying results from
playing Bruce Springsteen’s Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. last year as a fundraiser for the Carter Albrecht Music Foundation. “Ryan [Becker] and Jeff [Gruber] and I have been playing music together for a long time under a few different bands, and we all recently found ourselves without a project,” Sandlin said. “We all wanted to play some classic rock, but not necessarily the same top 40 classic rock songs everyone plays.” The musicians — who will join under the name Bar Band for Friday’s show — are fans of the Rolling Stones. They decided to follow the model from last year’s Springsteen tribute. On Friday, Bar Band will play the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet in order, from start to finish. “I’m a big Stones fan and I think my favorite [album] is Exile on Main St.,” Sandlin said. “It’s kind of the last great album they did. Beggars to me is when the Stones were right in their prime. It was very stripped down and very simple. It’s really hard to describe. It’s not my favorite album, but it’s probably their most complete album, musically.”

Sandlin said he admires that English musicians wear their influences on their sleeves. Sure, the Rolling Stones were writing and living on a different continent when musicians in the racially segregated American South were perfecting a type of folk music called the blues, and where other musicians — like Elvis Presley — were busy putting gospel, country and rock ’n’ roll into a blender. But the Stones plunged into both the blues and rock ’n’ roll with a nearly pagan abandon. They surfaced with a legacy
and generations of fans. “They’re obviously enthusiasts of American blues and rock ’n’ roll music, and I think in the early 1960s, that wasn’t selling anymore,” Sandlin said. “Pop music had moved on to Phil Spector and doo-wop — I love that too, but the Rolling Stones kind of reintroduced that to the U.S. “Americans, to me, seem like we always want to do something new. The British artists I’ve seen and met, they are never afraid to try to remake things. They don’t mind stealing things and telling you where they stole it from.” Like the Real Drags, Bar Band plans to avoid mimicry. “I’m not that interested in that sort of thing,” Sandlin said. “What I think makes it sound good is the personality and how they come out — I think it’s the chemistry. I’m not interested in replicating it. Maybe translating it.” Details: Bar Band starts the evening at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. The Real Drags go on afterward. The show is all ages and non-smoking. Ages 10 and under get in free, and ages 18 and older get in for $7. — Lucinda Breeding

fter musician Mikal Cronin graduated from college, he went through a relationship split and a long-distance move. Writing music turned out to be therapeutic, which explains the chip-on-the-shoulder punk brashness that comes out in Cronin’s songs. Yet the California musician didn’t sacrifice melody on the altar of bitterness. Cronin spins a singable tune, with the sneaky pathos usually credited to the likes of Brian Wilson. (Seriously — listen to the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations.” The verses are all pain and longing, saved only by the sunshine of the chorus.) These days, Cronin’s touring in support of his self-titled LP, produced with longtime friend and collaborator Ty Segall. The Treelines will headline Little d After Dark’s “The Great Big Shindig” on Sept. 22.
Something for nothing New music mag plugs free show
M
ark your calendars for a combination of music, fun and the launch of a new local music publication. The Denton RecordChronicle is planning a free concert on Saturday, Sept. 22, to celebrate the launch of its new monthly music publication, Little d After Dark. Slated for 9 p.m. at Dan’s Silverleaf, Little d’s “The Great Big Shindig” will feature three local bands — the Treelines, Bad Design and the Killhawks. With a ’50s and ’60s vocal vibe, the Treelines’ Amanda Newton adds clarity and flair to lyrics like “It’s not me that you’re thinking of,” her voice holding its own against the accompanying guitars and
drums. Ryan Becker and Tony Ferrarro trade off on guitar and bass, with Grady Sandlin handling the drums. Bad Design, with its definitive post-hardcore rock sound, features JP Hossley, Clint Sawyer, Steve Altuna and John Gillespie. Known for its Southern rock sound, the Killhawks features Wes Pitzer and Greg Altuna, who started performing together in the ’90s. They later recruited Joe Rosenthal and Alex Maples to round out their current rock and country sound. Did we mention that this concert is free? And the publication? It’s free, too. (You had to know we’d have some plug in here for the local music magazine, which can be found at a cool location near you.) See you at the shindig. — Dawn Cobb

OPENING FRIDAY I Don’t Know How She Does It (##1/2) When you’re a wife and working mother, there’s this inescapable, self-imposed pressure to do everything right all the time. The idea of having it all — a great job and a loving family, a toned body and a sane mind — is as appealing as it is elusive. Director Douglas McGrath finds just the right tone in depicting this juggling act, but too often smothers those nuggets of insight with a jaunty, sitcommy tone, with gags that are telegraphed from a mile away and music that works awfully hard to cue our emotional responses. It doesn’t help that Sarah Jessica Parker chimes in early and often with voiceovers that sound exactly like the observations she used to make as Carrie on Sex and the City, the role with which she will be eternally, intrinsically tied. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. — The Associated Press The Lion King 3-D A 3-D version of the classic animated film about a young lion cub who must overcome his devious uncle to lead their kingdom. With the voices of Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg and James Earl Jones. Rated G, 87 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Straw Dogs When a Hollywood screenwriter (James Marsden) and his actress wife (Kate Bosworth) return to her small hometown in the South to prepare the family home for sale after her father’s death, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts with the locals re-emerge. With Alexander Skarsgard and Dominic Purcell. Rated R, 108 minutes. — LAT
MAYA INDIE FILM SERIES, Friday through Sept. 22 All She Can (###1/2) Compelling drama about Luz Garcia (Corina Calderon), a high school student in a Texas border town who juggles a menial job, her studies, a crowded home and her passion for powerlifting. She understands the only way to gain a scholarship to the University of Texas is to win her state championship in weight lifting. So she makes a disastrous decision to cut corners, one that leads to severe unintended consequences. Rated R, 91 minutes. At the Studio Movie Grill in Dallas. — Boo Allen

In Drive, Ryan Gosling plays a man who “just drives.” That’s all he does. Or so he says. You didn’t think Ryan Gosling could play one-dimensional, did you?
Grind it till you find it By Boo Allen Film Critic
The main character in Drive says that’s all he does. He drives. That’s all he does. That’s what he says. He just drives. Of course this tightly wound creature, played convincingly by Ryan Gosling, does much more than drive. But he accomplishes that extremely well as a movie stuntman. And, as seen in a tense, nearly dialogue-free opening sequence, he also ably drives a getaway car in a heist while being chased by Los Angeles’ finest. Nicolas Winding Refn directed this neo-noir caper film reminiscent of several past gems of the genre. Any Los Angeles caper conjures thoughts of Stanley
Stark shifts keep ‘Drive’ gripping as Gosling weaves through plot’s obstacles Drive Rated R, 100 minutes. Opens Friday.
Kubrick’s lean The Killing, and the aerial shots and the nighttime drives through the city bring Blade Runner to mind. It’s also hard to see the loner protagonist being highlighted by Newton Thomas Sigel’s glossy urban cinematography and not think of Michael Mann’s first feature, Thief. But, Refn, from Hossein Amini’s script based on James Sallis’ novel, has mixed various
elements into a engaging, violent story — filled with mysterious characters and pregnant pauses. Maybe some parts of the involving plot don’t add up under scrutiny, but as a whole, they create gripping action entertainment. Gosling plays a not entirely likable loner who works as a garage mechanic by day and does his stunt work by night. He seems to pick his more salacious activities judiciously, turning down heists that aren’t to his liking. Things change when his garage boss (Bryan Cranston) wants him to drive a race car sponsored by a sleazy connection, effectively played against
type by Albert Brooks. Along the way, the driver meets and then becomes marginally involved with his neighbor Irene, a thankless role taken by the talented Carey Mulligan. When Irene’s husband returns from prison, he and the driver become involved in an ill-fated heist of a pawnshop. This crisis sets off the film’s climactic showdown, in which the driver shows that he can do more than simply drive. We learn little of the mysterious driver outside of what we see, making it hard to care too much about him. He does lead an eventful life, however, and that seems to be the main point behind this action-centered morality tale. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle.

he weekend is expected to be clear and hot — though at a forecast 92 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday, it could end up feeling like a weekend tailored for the 13th annual Denton Blues Festival. The free two-day festival, a pet project of the Denton Black Chamber of Commerce, includes Denton bluesmen among a bill with some regional and heavy hitters. The festival keeps crowd favorites on the schedule — a talent show and plenty for children to do in addition to soaking up the blues. See BLUES on 10

Shemekia Copeland There’s a smidge of the ingenue in Harlem native Shemekia Copeland, but the blues singer can let loose and belt it to the church belfry, too. Copeland is the headlining act on the Saturday bill. “Dirty Water” is an anthem, a declaration that the singer has had her fill of foul offerings. With the diction of a choirtrained singer, Copeland carefully spells out that the future won’t find her scrabbling for crumbs anywhere. Conviction kicks in when her Joplin-esque rasp delivers the song’s final chorus. “Broken World” sounds like a Mavis Staples-inspired lament about a world gone wrong and a human condition corrupted. “Lighting candles / say my prayers,” Copeland sings, keeping her voice restrained, “yelling to heaven / can you hear me up there / wish I could fix a small part of this broken world.” Copeland has pedigree, too. Her father was a Texas blues guitarist of note, Johnny Clyde Copeland. Her first album, Turn the Heat Up!, was released in 1998 on Alligatro records. Her second release, Wicked (2000), earned her awards and accolades. In 2002, she joined New Orleans’ Dr. John, who produced Talking to Strangers. She signed with Telarc two years ago and released Never Going Back, an album with one foot in the blues and another in a mix of soul, funk and a dash of jazz. Copeland is the act to see for blues fans who like the vocal heft of blues and the sophistication of jazz and soul. Sounds like: Neo-soulman Maxwell went to Memphis and fell for a Delta blues dame.

Up-and-coming Denton blues artist Chris Watson plays the Denton Blues Festival on Saturday night. Sunday headliner Zac Harmon’s birthright is honest. The Mississippi-born guitarist and vocalist was weaned on Delta blues, a gritty gumbo of gospel, fiery riverbank folk and tavern-rattling rock. When he puts fingers to stringer, Harmon kicks open a portal to furious noise. In a split second, Harmon’s guitar has a voice-change — aping a fiddle gone on-fire-forGod in soprano. In “Mighty High,” Harmon evokes the swaying boogie of a gospel choir: “Calling all your sisters / all your brothers, too /
you gotta ride, ride, ride that Mighty High.” The song is about a train bound for the afterlife. Harmon’s voice is traditional black gospel fare, and his guitar? The guitar goes a little nuts, a jitterbug of funk and that baroque improvisation that sidesteps shrill and soars. In “Comfort of a Man,” Harmon borrows from B.B. King’s lovesick repertoire in a song about what a lonely woman is missing. Harmon isn’t bound fast by tradition, though, applying the easy drums of contemporary
rock and poppy vocals. George Michael could cover the song with authority — 5 o’clock shadow and all. While in high school and college, Harmon worked as a guitarist for Z.Z. Hill, Dorothy Moore and Sam Myers. The 1980s saw his move to Los Angeles, where his bread and butter was doing session work in the studio. Writing and producing — for the likes of the O’Jays, Whispers, Karyn White, Alexander O’Neal and Black Uhuru — followed. Sounds like: B.B King and Kenny Wayne Shepherd shared
Denton’s Chris Watson makes the kind of blues you might expect from a 20-something man — there are equal parts testosterone and libido in a short space of three minutes. In his 2010 debut Just for Show, the barroom prowler is blatant in “No Sympathy”: “I’ll be right here waiting for you / singing you a sad, sad song / Don’t pass me by / on your way to the bottom.” Like other young bluesmen — take Jonny Lang, for instance — Watson expresses himself most naturally through the guitar and borrows liberally from B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy. His guitar work can cry, talk and take off on its own. Watson isn’t a natural born singer, but he has the conviction to carry it off. (Seems we’re living in the shadow of blues baritones a la John Lee Hooker anymore.) Watson has shared a stage with top-shelf blues artists, and played the House of Blues in Dallas with Robert Cray on Tuesday night. Sounds like: Jonny Lang shape-shifted for a brief stint as Stevie Ray Vaughan, before the road and life bruised him too much. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. Simultaneously, he, now older and sicker, travels in Brazil, picking up a young prostitute (Cristina Lago), who then helps him search for some vague young woman. Eventually, director Jose Joffily neatly ties the two narratives together. Not rated, 111 minutes.
