bring world to Square The Denton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, in league with eight other organizations, will host the ninth annual Fiesta-on-the-Square from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 24, followed by the University of North Texas’ second World Fest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 25. Through music, food, dancing and exhibits, the festivals aim to raise awareness about and preserve the history and future of the different cultures of Denton’s people. The fiesta will focus on the area’s Hispanic heritage, which stretches back into the 1900s. The event attracts performers

from local universities, like Mariachi Aguilas from UNT and the International Dance Company from Texas Woman’s University. Inside Denton’s Courthouseon-the-Square Museum, an exhibit with photographs and artifacts from early Hispanic families in the area will give residents an opportunity to see the roots of the population. The Saturday event, World Fest on the Square, is intended to highlight cultures around the globe. Admission is free to both events.

OPENING FRIDAY Alpha and Omega (##) Moderately charming if generic animated feature about a pair of Canadian wolves, Kate (voice of Hayden Panettiere) and Humphrey (Justin Long), each with different personalities and roles in the pack, who must find their way home to settle a family conflict after being accidentally sent away. Small children might enjoy some of the 3D effects and the quirky talking animals, but the film as a whole feels like a collection of spare parts from superior predecessors. Rated PG, 88 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Easy A (###) There are some big laughs in this otherwise shallow high school satire, loosely based on The Scarlet Letter, about a teenager (Emma Stone) who starts a rumor about losing her virginity that she hopes will make her popular but instead gives her a different label, especially for her strait-laced rival (Amanda Bynes). The script has plenty of witty banter (especially among the supporting roles) and makes enough clever tweaks to the source material to overcome its predictability. Rated PG-13, 92 minutes. — T.J. The Extra Man (###) Excellent performances carry this offbeat comedy about a pompous and eccentric New Yorker (Kevin Kline) who makes a living out of escorting rich elderly widows. He takes in a new roommate (Paul Dano) who is an aspiring writer and also happens to like cross-dressing. The directors of American Splendor draw some inspired comic moments from such a pairing, even if the film’s smugness and forced whimsy start to wear thin about halfway through. Rated R, 107 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Devil Five strangers stranded together when their elevator gets stuck face the revelation of their secrets. Frightening events turn annoyance into terror as the strangers begin to realize that one of their number is Lucifer himself. Story by M. Night Shyamalan. Rated PG-13, 80 minutes. Boston native Ben Affleck knows the area well, as evidenced by The Town, his second directing effort and one that shows a pleasing maturity in his filmmaking. In Gone Baby Gone, Affleck followed the formula laid out in the novel by fellow Bostonian Dennis Lehane. Here, Affleck

works from Chuck Hogan’s novel Prince of Thieves, with a script from a trio of writers, including Affleck. But Affleck makes The Town his own, showing a confidence to experiment with sound, camera angles and more frenetic action sequences. He achieves this technical level while also turning in one of his best performances as an actor — a naturalistic, rough-hewn portrayal of a townie, a native-born son

destined to follow the path laid out for him by his ancestry as well as his environment. At its core, The Town qualifies as not much more than a heist film with a requisite romance thrown in. But it goes two better by including three robberies, all ratcheting up the tension so high you naturally question and then recognize the fatal determinism of anyone who would undertake such operations, much less three in succession. In the first heist, the gang of four nab bank manager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall) but then release her soon after. The gang, headed by Doug (Affleck) and Jem (Jeremy Renner), discover she lives nearby. Under the pretense of finding out whether she revealed anything important to the FBI, Doug initiates contact with her, which, before long, turns romantic. From there, Doug and Claire

ters with different actors. A paroled child-molester (Ciaran Hinds) secretly visits his family, now relocated to Florida from New Jersey. His ex-wife Trish (Allison Janney) and two sons have troubles of their own, as well as Trish’s two sisters (Ally Sheedy and

Shirley Henderson). Dumb, pretentious, artificial and filled with unlikeable characters. Rated R, 98 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop (###) The great Chinese director Zhang Yimou (Hero) based

this wry murder-action-thriller on the Coen brothers’ first film, Blood Simple. The setting reverts to rural China, where a woman and her lover both work for her cruel husband in the titular noodle shop. When hubbie learns of the infidelity, stuff hap-

become more involved, while he reluctantly engages in his extracurricular activities. Naturally, the gang has the FBI hot on its trail, specifically agent Adam Frawley (Jon Hamm). Various other subplots play out involving Doug’s past lives, such as with his child’s mother (Blake Lively), and with his incarcerated father (Chris Cooper), who, as he puts it, has to die five more times before he is paroled. Except for Claire, every character in The Town arrives tightly wound. And by the end, even she has succumbed to the enervating neighborhood atmosphere that seems to afflict the natives. But that’s not surprising, because Affleck has drawn a violent and perpetually entertaining, yet convincing, portrait. DR. Despicable Me (###) Crisply animated CGI comedy about an insecure supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell) who wants to be renowned for his evil deeds, yet discovers it’s easier to walk the straight and narrow when his heart is melted by three little girls he adopts as part of a sinister plan to steal the moon and upstage an evil rival. The hip voice cast and quirky periphery characters are a plus, and while the film takes a while to find its footing, there are plenty of solid laughs to be had as long as you don’t walk in expecting the next Pixar extravaganza. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — T.J. Eat Pray Love (#1/2) We can all breathe easier now because Julia Roberts has found eternal happiness, true bliss and bodily harmony in Eat Pray Love, the new mind-bogglingly insipid film from director Ryan Murphy, based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s autobiography. In only her second starring role of the last six years, America’s Sweetheart plays author Gilbert, as she travels to Italy, India and Bali to find herself after a failed marriage to one man (Billy Crudup) and subsequent relationship with another (James Franco). Mind-numbingly simplistic, but with plenty of pretty scenery. Rated PG-13, 135 minutes. — B.A. The Expendables (#1/2) Brawn dominates brains in this formulaic testosterone fest noteworthy for its ensemble of erstwhile action-hero types including Sylvester Stallone (who also co-wrote and directed), Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and others, including a couple of surprise cameos. The plot involves a group of assassins on a secret yet dangerous CIA mission in South America, but story takes a clear backseat to shootouts and explosions that grow tiresome. Rated R, 103 minutes. — T.J.

Get Low (####) Low-key character piece elevated by a superb lead performance from Robert Duvall, playing a hermit who emerges from a life in the Tennessee woods with a wish to arrange a living funeral so he can exorcise demons from his past. The script (remarkably based on a true story) is thin on its own, but director Aaron Schneider smartly lets his actors — including Bill Murray, Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black — take command. The result is deliberately paced but ultimately poignant. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes. — T.J. Going the Distance (###) This surprisingly funny romantic-comedy delivers some raunchy Hangoverstyle humor in a familiar package. A couple (Drew Barrymore and Justin Long) meet in New York and fall for each other. She must relocate to San Francisco, but they do their best to maintain a long-distance romance. The unexceptional narrative gives way to crackling, R-rated dialogue. With Christina Applegate. Rated R, 102 minutes. — B.A. Inception (###1/2) The latest mindbending thriller from visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) is about Dom (Leonardo DiCaprio), a man who specializes in the illegal practice of extraction, or stealing secrets from a person’s mind while the victim is dreaming. In what he hopes will be his last job, Dom must implant an idea in the dream of the heir to a corporation (Cillian Murphy) rather than extract it. At times, Inception threatens to collapse under the weight of its own ambition, but in a summer of sequels and retreads, the level of inspiration alone is praiseworthy. Terrific supporting cast includes Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph GordonLevitt, Michael Caine and Tom Berenger. Rated PG-13, 148 minutes. — T.J. The Last Exorcism (###) Shrewd, suspenseful, but ultimately nonsensical horror flick that serves as a refreshing change of pace, combining

elements of genre pioneers such as Rosemary’s Baby and The Blair Witch Project. Cotton (Patrick Fabian), a charismatic Texas priest, has made a career out of performing exorcisms without believing in them. Before he retires, he agrees to take on the case of a Louisiana man convinced that his teenage daughter (Ashley Bell) is possessed without having any direct evidence. Director Daniel Stamm achieves a clever balance between mocking formulas about demonic possession and religious fundamentalism while still delivering some of the cheap thrills that audiences will expect. Rated PG-13, 87 minutes. — T.J. Machete (###) Stylish if uneven action-comedy spoof from director Robert Rodriguez gives a star turn to Danny Trejo as an assassin who is presumed dead by a Mexican drug kingpin (Steven Seagal), only to become an unlikely hero during a fight for immigration rights during the re-election campaign of a conservative Texas senator (Robert De Niro). But Rodriguez never engages in much social commentary, preferring to take comedic jabs and stage creatively violent killings. The quirky cast helps the filmmaker offer several big laughs. Rated R, 105 minutes. — T.J. Nanny McPhee Returns (###) Emma Thompson returns in the title role, and supplies the screenplay, for this sequel to the 2005 original based on Christianna Brand’s characters. A mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal) in World War II tends to her three children and a visiting niece and nephew while the father is at war. Enter Nanny McPhee, who makes everything right. Director Susanna White aims directly at kids with broad humor and plenty of cuddly animatronic animals. Rated PG, 108 minutes. — B.A. The Other Guys A detective more interested in paperwork (Will Ferrell) and a street-tough cop (Mark Wahlberg) are partnered up. With Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne

Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — The Associated Press Piranha 3D Spring break turns gory when an underground tremor releases hundreds of prehistoric, carnivorous fish into Lake Victoria, a popular waterside resort. With Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames and Jerry O’Connell. Rated R, 89 minutes. Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D In a world overrun with the walking dead, Alice (Milla Jovovich) continues her battle against Umbrella Corp., rounding up survivors along the way. Joined by an old friend, Alice and her group set out for a rumored safe haven in Los Angeles. Instead of sanctuary, they find the city overrun with zombies, and a trap about to spring. Rated R, 96 minutes. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (##) This outrageously high-energy comedy, based on the series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, has a visual style that’s fearless if nothing else. British director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) swings for the fences, even if he whiffs. Scott (Michael Cera) is a quirky musician trying to get over a bad breakup

when he meets a new girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), whom he must win over by defeating her seven exboyfriends in a series of video game showdowns. The story and actors seem an afterthought to the frenetic camerawork and stylistic trickery. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — T.J. Step Up 3D Street dancers and a college freshman square off in a competition against world-class hiphop dancers. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — AP Takers (##) Stylish but generic thriller starring hip-hop artist T.I. as an ex-con who rejoins his old gang of bank robbers for one last heist, but has his motives questioned, and the hardened cop (Matt Dillon) who has been frustrated by the criminals’ high-tech elusiveness for years. The film maintains a breathless pace, with some impressive stunts and chase sequences along the way. But the screenplay is no Ocean’s Eleven in its slick attempt to capture camaraderie among thieves. The cast includes Idris Elba, Paul Walker and Chris Brown. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — T.J.

Blues written in performer’s DNA By Ellen Ritscher Sackett Staff Writer

hen William “Big Bill” Morganfield was in his mid-20s, his life took an unexpected turn. It was April 30, 1983. Morganfield was in Atlanta, teaching English to middle-schoolers. Muddy Waters, dubbed “the father of blues,” passed away. While the rest of the world mourned the loss of the great musician, Big Bill Morganfield mourned his dad.

“He had said on his dying bed, as he laid there, he was a little bit disappointed in that none of his kids had decided to do anything with blues and that music,” Morganfield said in a telephone interview. “Not just his kids, but he saw a whole generation of blacks moving away from the blues and really thumbing their nose up to it because it was considered devil music for a while by our people, by a lot of our people. So anyway, as the transfor-

09 DENTON BLUES FESTIVAL SCHEDULE The 12th annual Denton Blues Festival, presented by the Denton Black Chamber of Commerce, will be held Saturday and Sunday at Quakertown Park, 321 E. McKinney St. Gates open at noon. The event is free. For more information, call 940-391-1536 before 6 p.m. or visit www.dentonbluesfestival.org.

SATURDAY mation went from all-black audiences to all-white audiences, he saw that movement and he saw that nobody was picking it up. And even his own kids, no one was trying to pick it up and do anything with it.” Although he “tinkled” with the guitar and tried to play along with songs on the radio as a child, he had no formal training and didn’t take it seriously until the year following his father’s death. “I decided to dig into it and learn it,” said the self-taught guitarist who began by delving into his father’s musical roots. “Initially I said, this stuff is easy. It’s not hard. I would get there, and I would try to recreate a record sound, and I realized, wow, I don’t know what those guys are doing. I could hear those three chords, but they were doing a lot of subtle things in those chords to come out with that sound. So it became a passion to really try to learn it and get enough control of the music so that I could put out a tribute to my father. Initially that’s what I wanted to do. “I wasn’t looking for a

change,” Morganfield said. “I just wanted to honor my father with one blues record.” Eventually Morganfield reached that goal with his first independent album, Nineteen Years Old: A Tribute to Muddy Waters, recorded in Memphis in 1997. Rising Son, what he calls his debut album, earned him a W.C. Handy Award for Best New Artist in 2000. His 2001 release, Ramblin’ Mind, featured two songs with Taj Mahal on vocals, and Blues in the Blood came out in 2003. “I always tell people, you think my father’s life is interesting, and it is,” said Morganfield, who was raised by his grandmother and earned two college degrees. “I’ve got a quite interesting one, too. And it’s a tale.” “I have a song called ‘Child of Mercy.’ Bad luck and trouble follow me wherever I go. One of the lines goes, ‘I never knew my mother, my father was always on the road, too. My brothers and sisters, I knew I had them but I didn’t see them until I was [22].’… It’s the way it happened. It’s a life, and it’s the way it went down.” He said his culture has embraced blues as a way of life, and it shaped his life, too. “Being born into a situation where your daddy is Muddy Waters kind of helps,” Morganfield said. When his father died, Morganfield said, his love for his father helped develop his fondness for blues. The two go hand in hand, he said. “I had a chance to walk in his steps as any proud son would want to do,” he said. “Like anything, you learn it, and then you take it, and go with it and make it your own.” Morganfield’s father told his son there were two types of guitar players. For the first type, entertaining came naturally. “That was my dad; it came natural to him,” Morganfield said. “And he’d say, you’ve got these other kind of guys, that they [were] like, one nail. One at a time. Bang, bang, bang. … And that’s me. I’m like one nail at a time. It’s a really slow process.” He said he’s always working to improve

before you know it, you’re at a very high level,” he said. Last year, Morganfield released his fifth album, Born Lover, on his own label, Black Shuck Records, backed by Vizztone and distributed by Red Eye. “That’s my own thing. That’s my own money that went into the production of that record, so that’s my baby all the way,” he said. “I try to be a good entertainer. I always say that [it’s] the thing that differentiates me from the other guys out there,” he said. “You get on stage, you give people a show.” Morganfield said he’s looking “to work my magic” at the Denton Blues Festival, and “to let people see not just the son of Muddy Waters, but [to see] Big Bill Morganfield.” ELLEN RITSCHER SACKETT can be reached at 940-566-6845. Freebirds’ barrage on the senses has flavor By Ellen Ritscher Sackett Staff Writer

O

ver the last 20 years, Freebirds World Burrito’s Texas-focused chain has developed something of a cult following. Freebirds fanatics are those willing to drive for miles to get their fill of the restaurant’s burritos, tacos, nachos and the like. They hotly debate the merits of Freebirds over its national competitor, Chipotle, and describe in detail their favorite combinations from a choice of 3 trillion possibilities. They fill up “fanatic cards” with stamps, redeemable toward rewards based on accumulated purchases. Now, fortunately, local fanatics won’t have to fill up their gas tanks to get to the closest Freebirds. As of today, Denton has one of its own. Earlier this week, Freebirds Denton opened its doors in two days of mock trial runs, which doubled as benefits for its two local causes: the University of North Texas College of Music and the Denton State Sup-

ported Living Center. For a $5 donation, customers were invited to chow down on a custom-made meal and to experience the Freebirds culture. From its start as the joint venture between two college roommates to its more recent corporate expansion, Freebirds’ philanthropic, “change the world,” be-yourself attitude appeals largely to the college crowd and the ever-optimistic — a perfect fit for Denton. Until Monday, I was among the uninitiated. Peeking through the glass windows, I could see the Statue of “Libby” suspended from the ceiling, busting through the Berlin Wall on a Voodoo custom chopper. (Later I learned this representation of freedom is found in every Freebirds restaurant.) As soon as I walked through the door, I was hit with a barrage of rock ’n’ roll and greetings from more-thanhelpful employees. A young, nose-ringed gentleman loudly suggested over the music that I try the famous burrito. He led me to the cafe-

teria-style fresh food line where I was introduced to Miyaka, a friendly employee with a movie-star smile who made recommendations from the freebies, extras and sauces as we went along. Our completed collaboration was a foil-wrapped cylindrical creation stuffed inside a spinach tortilla, made with grilled chicken, black beans, rice, guacamole, lots of cilantro, red onion, roasted corn, salsa and who knows what else I agreed to. Common sense aside, I also agreed to chips and queso. Fortunately, I was starving. As I properly unpeeled the foil, I began a lengthy journey toward the other end of the burrito. I didn’t quite make it through the seismic Tex-Mex portion. (I did, however, in spite of my big eyes and stuffed stomach, find some room for the creamy white cheese

queso.) My husband went with the more manageable carnita tacos, slow roasted since morning and slightly spicy. He gave the Sweet Leaf Tea the thumbs up, and I washed down my meal with a soda (no Coke, Pepsi). Maybe next time we’d go for a beer or try a frozen margarita. At meal’s end, we opted to throw out our used foil rather than add to the restaurant’s decor, as suggested, with artistic expressions. The new restaurant was already dotted with odd-shaped animals and shiny aluminum-foil sculptures. The eager employees all wanted to know how we liked our first visit. We liked it. Was it, as one Facebook fanatic described, “the most bodaciously epic masticating flavorful adventure of the taste buds”? It might be a bit over the top, but that phrase would describe Freebirds perfectly. ELLEN RITSCHER SACKETT can be reached at 940-566-6845. Her e-mail address is esackett@dentonrc.com.
