inger-songwriter Kevin Welch performs Sunday at Denton Domino Hall, a local alternative venue that hosts house concerts. If he plays music that sounds like it’s coated in red dust, it’s because he was born in California but moved to Oklahoma as a kid. Welch has been steadily recording as a solo artist since 1992. His latest, A Patch of Blue Sky, rings with a spiritual longing that keeps his Americana honest and his gospel adventure true. Welch’s teenage attraction to music landed him in a bluegrass band and a steady life on the road. In the late 1970s, Welch had enough of the road and made a beeline for Nashville, Tenn., where he started writing for Tree International. He wrote for 10 years, made and earned a living, and then started making his own records. He and friends started a label, Dead Reckoning, that’s turned out more than 20 albums. A Patch of Blue Sky is a mellow record that is long on heart and short on sentimentality. Denton Domino Hall is located off the beaten path. For more information about the venue, visit www.denton dominohall.com. To make a reservation and for directions, e-mail denton dominohall@yahoo.com. Gates open at 4 p.m. Sunday, and the show starts at 5 p.m. Admission is a suggested donation of $15. — Lucinda Breeding

Jeff Sipe (who’s played with Aquarium Rescue Unit and Trey Anastasio) will join Coffin on drums,

Miami’s Jacuzzi Boys dip into Denton on Saturday night with a show at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios.

Hot tub time machine Jacuzzi Boys mine glam, garage and even surf sounds

“I

t’s a stupid name but they’ve got a good spirit,” Iggy Pop said recently of the Jacuzzi Boys in an interview with Urban Outfitters’ website. The trio manages to pull all the sonic potential from Miami’s cheesecake paradise image with tinny, glam-rock interpretations of classic garage hooks. The band’s home city is referenced heartily with song titles

Jacuzzi Boys With American Werewolf Academy and Deep Snapper. 9 p.m. Saturday at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, 411 E. Sycamore St. Cover is $6 for 21 and older, $8 for minors.

like “Island Ave” and “Coral Girls” on 2010’s Seahawks and Peacocks; on Glazin’, Jacuzzi Boys’ latest release, the surfinspired garage-pop says enough of the landscape. Bombastic, metallic production — a cousin of the passing bedroom-echo trend sustained until right about yesterday because of bands like Best Coast and Wavves — is what

sets the band apart from other punk revivalists. On the new album, the backto-basics aesthetes don’t stop short of referencing “Wipe Out,” with literal shouts of “Wipe out!” Jacuzzi Boys actually played with the Surfaris, the band responsible for the 1963 hit, in West Palm Beach this summer. Jacuzzi Boys’ appearance at Rubber Gloves on Saturday is served especially well with a supporting set by Deep Snapper, one of a chunk of West Coast punk disciple groups active in Denton. — Lyndsay Knecht IH

High style in wartime “Glamour in the Age of Austerity (1940-1947)” is the theme for a fashion exhibit now at Fashion on Main, 1901 Main St. in Dallas. The exhibit from the Texas Fashion Collection in the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design depicts the transition from World War II to the turning point in the mid- to late 40s, when the war was ending and constraints of fabric and supplies were lifted. That allowed fashion designers to move away from simplistic to

increasingly glamorous styles, says Marla Ross, a student assistant at the Texas Fashion Collection, who has a background as an MGM Hollywood costume designer. Among the pieces with patriotic inspirations, innovative details and elegant silhouettes is a Chantilly lace dress donated by Margaret Hunt Hill. The free exhibit is open from noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. Fashion at Main is an exhibition space in the Universities Center at Dallas.

As the reigning regent is

t’s hard to take seriously a movie that begins with a title reading “The world is in chaos.” The opening notes from Killer Elite also state that it is 1980, suggesting that, see, we’re no worse off now than we were 30 years ago, an idea particularly true when it comes to mindless action entertainment such as this. Even though it is allegedly based, obviously quite loosely, on true events, Killer Elite is a hodgepodge of cliches of the genre. A standard cat-andmouse game sets up, and then two warring factions spend the better part of two hours hunting down each other in routine, bloody fashion. Two of the few surprises to come out of Killer Elite are the assemblage and the displacement of talent. Notable actors Robert DeNiro and Clive Owen appear, going through the motions as if they were on their way to cash their checks, which they probably are. But both these fine actors support Jason Statham, and, in the end, turn Killer Elite into simply another mindless Jason Statham action film, such as Crank or The Transporter. Here, Statham plays Danny, who has a job go wrong in Mexico in the first scene. He tells his partner, Hunter (DeNiro), that he is through with the business, setting up the requisite “one last job” a

year later. Hunter falls captive to an Oman sheik who forces Danny to hunt down and kill three former British secret service agents in London. The trio killed the sheik’s three sons in some earlier obscure Middle East conflict. So, in a film devoid of good guys, a laughable attempt is made to give Danny an existential crisis, one making him ask himself whether he has turned immune to killing, becoming part of the Killer Elite who can kill with mental impunity. Eventually, director Gary McKendry, from a script based on Ranulph Fiennes’ novel, succumbs to the Statham machine. He dispatches with DeNiro and Owen, and lets Statham lead the way in several fights, a car chase and a pursuit across roofs, ending with his jumping from one to another — just like in any other Statham film. For fans of this genre, Killer Elite may pass for an end-ofsummer diversion, but it offers little to anyone else. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle. Arts council’s cook-off heats up competition at stadium before UNT game

eat lovers will be in hog, elk, buffalo, venison and alligator heaven this Saturday afternoon as local chefs prepare these and other exotic game dishes for this year’s Wild Beast Feast. This year’s event will take place at the University of North Texas’ new Apogee Stadium before the Mean Green faces the University of Indiana on the field. The tailgating party is one of three annual fundraisers for the Greater Denton Arts Council, which provides support to local arts groups. This year, 16 cooking teams will compete for the Best of the Beast 2011 title — using only food products that have been FDA/USDA approved. Winners receive bragging rights and an embossed belt buckle that reads “Best of the Beast” and features the feast’s cowboy armadillo mascot, Diller Dude. The 2010 defending champion is Team Livin’ the High Life, which includes Miller of Denton employees Ryann Sandmann and Len Yarborough and son Hayden. Sandmann calls it “a unique event”

that “gives you the opportunity to try different cuisine that you aren’t going to have anywhere else,” Sandmann said. This year, her team will serve grilled yellow-fin tuna on a bed of rice with a ginger-mustard sauce. Winners are determined by how

much money is stuffed into each team’s tip jar — all of which is donated back to the arts council. Money for the arts council is also generated from the proceeds from ticket sales and a silent and live auction. Adam Reese will serve as auctioneer, and Thad

Bonduris and the Fun-Addix will provide live music. Last year, according to the arts council’s executive director, Margaret Chalfant, the event raised approximately $14,000. See BEAST on 10

“I don’t care if we win. It’s a goodwill event,” said James King, who has teamed up to make buffalo sliders with his brother and insurance business partner, Jeff, his lawyer friends Greg Sawko and Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs, and Phil Jordan and Damon Ward from Business Air. James King, a City Council member, said the Wild Beast Feast gives them all a “legitimate excuse” to have “a great, fun time all being together.” He said the event “encourages creativity and hamming it up and a little bit of silliness.” “People are really going all out this year,” said Joey Hawkins, event co-chairman. He volunteered his wife, Amy — who calls herself the team’s “Super Leader” — to be a part of Team Jupiter House Space Gators, which also includes Sarah Vaughn, Erik Fossmo and Jeff Cox. “We wanted something to complement our coffee, but in keeping with the wild beast theme, we came up with alligator fritters,” Amy Hawkins said. The fritters will be topped with a little bit of raspberry jelly sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with a shot of iced coffee. “Like a beignet,” said Joey Hawkins. Brian Glenn and Michael Ventrca from the Denton firefighters team are preparing Javelina Jalapenos, which Glenn calls “a balanced meal on a toothpick” that includes “all five food groups.” The team recently won the people’s choice award at another fundraiser where they served the peppers stuffed with sausage, two kinds of cheese, sweet Texas onion and seasonings and topped with bacon. The team’s firehouse colleagues will help deseed the case of 400 peppers. “It’s a labor-intensive deal,” Glenn said. The Denton firefighters had hoped to bring a converted smoker fire truck to the Wild Beast Feast as they have in the past, but unfortunately this year, the firefighters who had planned to deliver it to Denton have been overextended from

fighting the Bastrop wildfires. Aaron Anderson of Meat Guns calls himself a “Wild Beast Feast rookie.” He and Isaac Hoskins, Ashley Bender and Jamie Marrs will serve up hog d’oeuvres: pork sausage topped with a habañeropineapple-cream cheese spread and crispy, crumbled bacon for the finishing touch — a combination of “spicy, sweet and salty,” Anderson said. “I love cook-offs in general because it’s always fun to compete for a year’s worth of bragging rights. But events like this are also a great opportunity to learn some new tricks from all the great cooks that will be there on Saturday,” said Anderson. “[It] should be a great day.” Caterer Gail Patterson and

her husband, Ricky, “the pit master,” are also newbies to the Wild Beast Feast. The former owners of Big Fatty’s On the Square in Valley View are preparing a beer-braised pecansmoked seared boar belly on hot chili cheese grits with a apple jicama slaw garnish. The dish features their “claim to fame” — the award-winning Mistress Carlita’s Spanking Rub, which is available for purchase at Central Market. “There’s going to be some heat on this pork,” Patterson said. ers to demonstrate “how easy and delicious cooking hearthealthy can be, whether you are cooking wild game or tailgating at a football game,” said Courtney Kennedy, Denton Regional’s community development manager. “Everyone who comes to sample the venison sliders will receive a Heart Healthy Tailgating guide,” she said. Team Little Guys Movers, which includes Eric Eisenmann, Jeff Barnard, Brad Steiger and event co-chairman Marcus Watson, is keeping its entry a secret. “We will be serving the juiciest, most tender, flavorful meaty morsels cooked in the year 2011 in the Western Hemisphere. I am not at liberty to divulge any more details at this point due to their proprietary nature,” Barnard said. The Little Guys team will also cook hot dogs that will be “free for the asking.” Randy Robinson and Don York represent Team Access 1st Capital Bank. They’ve participated in the Wild Beast Feast since its inception. “We’ll be serving pork spare ribs and pulled pork sliders,” Robinson said. “We served the same thing last year, and it was

a big hit.” “Besides providing support for a great local organization, the Beast Feast attracts a broad spectrum of the community. It has evolved into a great community event,” he said. He noted that he’s glad the fifth annual feast will take place at UNT’s new stadium, in conjunction with Saturday evening’s game. “Apogee Stadium is state-ofthe-art, and a great place to watch a college football game,” Robinson said. The Denton Rotary Club team, which includes Ernie McGee, Sonja Rogers, Phil Tammell and Ken Ingram, will be preparing its beef brisket in a Big Green Egg, a ceramic smoker that uses hardwood charcoal. “Since this is my first event, I’m looking [forward] to experiencing what the Beast Feast is all about,” said McGee. “Go Mean Green!” Other teams participating are Denton County Veterans, Wildwood Inn, Newland Real Estate/Rooster’s Roadhouse, Denton Sports and Physical Therapy, Wells Fargo Advisors and The Arts Guild’s Sweet Tooth Booth, which will provide dessert.
