f a tamale-gorging feeding frenzy is your kind of fun, then high-tail it to Old Town Lewisville on Saturday for the sixth annual World Tamale Eating Championship at the 2010 Western Days Festival. The rules are simple: Whoever packs in the most tamales in 12 minutes wins. Dallas Tortilla and Tamale Factory will provide the unhusked victuals for those with the stomach to compete. The event is officially sanctioned by Major League Eating, the governing body of all stomach-centric sports. The $3,500 purse will be split six ways, and the winner will go home with $1,500 and the distinction of being named “Tamale Eating Champion of the World.” The runner-up will receive $1,000 and third place will collect

California soul Artist’s etchings capture charm of flora, asphalt in the Golden State
A
lice Gibbons is a fifthgeneration San Francisco native. The City by the Bay and the rest of the state have left the artist with a surprising muse — her work is inspired by everything from the vermillion paint on the Golden Gate Bridge to city skylines to the native plants of California. Gibbons has a solo show up in the Gough Gallery at the Center for the Visual Arts in Denton through Oct. 17. The exhibit is a collection of
Gibbons’ etchings, which together show the artist’s panoramic sense of the state — from its ultra-chic urban centers setting trends for the rest of the nation, to the ruggedness of a land that boasts mountains and the ocean. It also gives insight into the artist’s long memory. Gibbons nurtures a soulful connection to California, which offers its people experiences as varied as the breakneck pace of Los Angeles and the slow-cook
pace of Northern California nature trails. Gibbons’ etchings use black, white and gray to give a caughtin-the-moment look to her prints, rendering them with a sense of both timelessness and nostalgia. Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The arts center is at 400 E. Hickory St. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.dentonarts.com. — Lucinda Breeding

ross Canadian Ragweed’s decision in May to take a break from touring left fans waiting to see what would come from the iconic Red Dirt country music group. While the other members of the band are taking a break to be with their families, guitarist Cody Canada is back on the road with friend Seth James. As part of his tour, Canada is working on an album that honors the Oklahoma musicians who have played a role in his career, said Melanie Wages, Canada’s publicist. Canada will record the album in Austin this fall, with an anticipated release in early 2011, she said. Canada and James will play an acoustic set at Rockin’ Rodeo today as part of their tour. Canada’s solo work is Red Dirt through and through. Rhythms and chords often drift lazily, like a float on the Red River, giving pace and support to songs typical of the genre. Anyone familiar with Cross Canadian Ragweed knows that Canada can deftly pick his way through a challenging solo, but how he decides to use those talents in the acoustic realm is yet to be seen. 219-3930 for directions. The music of Canada’s companion, James, is country to the bone. Fans of honky-tonk will appreciate James’ tunes, which offer the kind of energy that would have any boot-scooter cuttin’ the rug at a local dive.
While James will play acoustic while he tours with Canada, his style — described as Texas blues — is solid and clean. No doubt James has a good grasp on the fret board. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show is open to patrons 18
and older. A dress code is enforced. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door or online at www.rockinrodeo denton.com. For more information, call 940-565-6611. — Tim Monzingo

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
Bruce Springsteen, a.k.a. “The Boss,” is also near and dear to the hearts of a healthy crop of Denton musicians. Members of Denton’s heavy-hitting bands RTB2, the Slow Burners and Descender get together Saturday at Dan’s Silverleaf as Who’s the Boss. The group is the headlining tribute band leading the evening concert “Tramps Like Us,” a benefit for the Carter Albrecht Music Foundation. Local music luminaries Ryan Thomas Becker (RTB2) and George Neal (Slow Burners) join Isaac Hoskins, who works solo and as a member of The Heelers, Chris Welch and Harlin Anderson in the concert. Who’s the Boss will perform the entirety of Springsteen’s album Greetings from Asbury Park, his first studio album. Carter Albrecht is best known as the guitarist of Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. The Dallas musician was fatally shot Sept. 3, 2007. His death was an ignominious end to a distinguished career. The musician was shot by a neighbor after he kicked in the neighbor’s door in an apparent drunken rage, after assaulting his girlfriend. The Dallas music community established the foundation to honor Albrecht’s work and talent. The show begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St. Cover is $5. — Lucinda Breeding

OPENING FRIDAY Catfish (##) Bizarre low-budget thriller within a documentary framework about a New York photographer who becomes friendly with someone on Facebook, only to suspect that she is not who she claims. It's a clever setup that begins to unravel once the filmmakers set out to expose the truth behind their suspicions, and the resulting payoff simply isn't satisfying. There's a vague curiosity factor that keeps it intriguing for a while, but it's hardly an expose on contemporary relationships. Rated PG-13, 86 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson Heartbreaker (##) Uneven romantic comedy from France about a charming bachelor (Romain Duris) who makes a living out of hired breakups — in other words, seducing women out of unhappy relationships. His latest job involves an heiress (Vanessa Paradis) who proves complicated and threatens to expose his cover. Duris shows some comic chops in a breezy mainstream farce that is more liable to produce smiles than laughter. The story is predictable and the slapstick gags often fall flat. Not rated, 104 minutes. At the Magnolia. — T.J. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole A father owl’s tales of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole enthrall his son Soren, but an older son scoffs at the stories of winged warriors who fought an epic battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones. Later, the brothers become captives of the Pure Ones, but Soren makes a daring escape and, with the help of other young owls, seeks out the Guardians and brings them back to defend their people once again. Rated PG, 91 minutes. Never Let Me Go (###1/2) This somber British drama based on Kazuo Ishiguro's novel has a futuristic, science-fiction twist. Three youngsters (Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield) are raised together on a governmental “farm.” Years later, they venture out to achieve the tasks for which they were raised. Fine cast aids the atmospheric photography to render the often chilling circumstances. Rated R, 103 minutes. — Boo Allen The Virginity Hit Four New Orleans teens make a pact to lose their vir-

third-act plot twists unfortunately strain reality and scream contrivance. This new Wall Street borrows from fairly current events and turns actual people and circumstances into fictional fodder. A Henry Paulson-looking treasury secretary helps and then refuses to help certain companies in peril. Financialspeak might muddy the movie’s waters, but Stone, always an able craftsman, rapidly propels his narrative. If the original Wall Street was driven by personalities, this one finds impetus in its plot, with the characters being little more than pawns in a drama larger than any individual. DR. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
n Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the eager young acolyte asks the veteran Wall Street manipulator what his amount is. How much does he want? What would be the figure needed to finally quit and not work anymore? The old lion answers: “More.” And “more” is never enough for the greedy types in Oliver Stone’s follow-up to his 1987 indictment of greed. Stone brings back some of the same characters he previously created, but, following Stephen Schiff and Allan Loeb’s screenplay, he also juggles several connected storylines to condemn excess while celebrating it. Revenge and redemption are still possible, but now, everyone must work harder for it.
The director wisely sets his stage not in 2010, but in the summer of 2008, when worldwide financial markets veered toward apocalypse. Soon after came reports of Wall Street hedge fund managers giving themselves huge bonuses while their companies and clients suffered, all of which leads newly bestselling author Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas, reprising his Oscar-
ginity and film the experience. After his three buddies accomplish their goal in rapid succession, Matt (Matt Bennett) hopes to do the deed with his girlfriend, but his efforts fall through. Rated R, 87 minutes. You Again Marni (Kristen Bell) is horrified to learn that her brother’s
fiancee is Joanna, the nemesis of her teen years, and she plans to expose Joanna’s evil side to her family. The situation explodes with the arrival of Joanna’s aunt Ramona (Sigourney Weaver), who was the high school rival of Marni’s mother (Jamie Lee Curtis). Rated PG, 105 minutes.

winning role) to proclaim to an attentive audience that during the eight years he spent in prison, greed went from being good to being legal. An impressive Shia LaBeouf plays Jake Moore, the new Wall Street blood who craves revenge when his Lehman Brothers-like company goes under and his mentor (Frank Langella) commits suicide. Jake traces the destructive rumors causing the twin disasters to Bretton James (Josh Brolin), who coincidentally provided information to help bring down Gekko years earlier. Once the sides have been established, further plot developments play out more or less as expected. Twists come with Moore’s engagement to Gekko’s estranged daughter Winnie (Carey Mulligan). But a pair of

enton Community Theatre is playing up the trivialities of its latest play, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. After all, the subtitle of the play is A Trivial Comedy for Serious People. This three-act play, which is opening up the 41st season of the theater, follows two men, John “Jack” Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who, at different points in the play, pretend to be named Ernest to
Play cleverly explores earnest importance of honesty escape their lives. This causes a bit of mischief when Jack falls in love with Gwendolen Fairfax and Algernon falls for Cecily Cardew. In order to play up the trivialities, Michael Bolen, the play’s director, paid close attention to the details. “Every single thing served a purpose,” Bolen said. The cast and crew did a lot of research, which they refer to as “table work,” before per-
forming the play. Bolen said it is important for the actors to understand relationships during the time the play is set. In fact, Bolen has the running crew acting as servants so that each member plays an important role. He said he enjoyed playing with the personality of the servants, and the audience will know how they feel about their job.
They also researched Wilde to better understand who he was and where he was coming from when he wrote the play in the 1890s. “It’s been one of my favorite plays,” said Bolen, who performed it first while attending Texas A&M University. He played the Rev. Canon Chasuble. “We wanted to be true to Oscar Wilde and the period,” he said, playing close attention
to period movement and posing. For instance, in Victorian times, women didn’t sit with their legs crossed and they had to remain at the edge of their seats. Bolen also mentioned that women have to take off their gloves at certain times and a certain way. The costumes and furniture of the show, which opened last weekend, are also crafted to period detail, Bolen said. That attention to detail goes beyond what the audience will See EARNEST on 11

effects and the quirky talking animals, but the film as a whole feels like a collection of spare parts from superior predecessors. Rated PG, 88 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson The American (##1/2) George Clooney stars as the title character in this deliberately paced film about a loner hit man who spends time in small Italian villages while making a rifle and waiting for his next assignment. Director Anton Corbijn reveals little of his main character, while avoiding garish displays of violence and action, instead making this more of a cold-to-the-touch character study. Rated R, 104 minutes. — B.A. Despicable Me (###) Crisply animated CGI comedy about an insecure supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell) who wants to be renowned for his evil deeds, yet discovers it’s easier to walk the straight and narrow when his heart is melted by three little girls he adopts as part of a sinister plan to steal the moon and upstage an evil rival. The hip voice cast and quirky periphery characters are a plus, and while the film takes a while to find its footing, there are plenty of solid laughs to be had as long as you don’t walk in expecting the next Pixar extravaganza. Rated PG, 95 minutes. — T.J. Devil Five strangers stranded together when their elevator gets stuck face the revelation of their secrets. Frightening events turn annoyance into terror as the strangers begin to realize that one of their number is Lucifer himself. Story by M. Night Shyamalan. Rated PG-13, 80 minutes. Easy A (###) There are some big laughs in this otherwise shallow high school satire, loosely based on The Scarlet Letter, about a teenager (Emma Stone) who starts a rumor about losing her virginity that she hopes will make her popular but instead gives her a different label, especially for her strait-laced rival (Amanda Bynes). The script has plenty of witty banter (especially among the supporting roles) and makes enough clever tweaks to the source material to overcome its predictability. Rated PG-13, 92 minutes. — T.J. Eat Pray Love (#1/2) We can all breathe easier now because Julia Roberts has found eternal happiness, true bliss and bodily harmony in Eat Pray Love, the new mind-bogglingly insipid film from director Ryan Murphy, based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s autobiography. In only her second starring role of the last six years, America’s Sweetheart plays author Gilbert, as she travels to Italy, India and Bali to find herself after a failed marriage to one man (Billy Crudup) and subsequent relationship with another (James Franco). Mindnumbingly simplistic, but with plenty of pretty scenery. Rated PG-13, 135 minutes. — B.A. The Expendables (#1/2) Brawn dominates brains in this formulaic testosterone fest noteworthy for its ensemble of erstwhile action-hero types including Sylvester Stallone

Denton Community Theatre’s staging of The Importance of Being Earnest stars Kenny Fudge, left, and Jonathan Dickson as two gentlemen who find themselves in the hot seat.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST What: a play by Oscar Wilde first staged in 1895 Who: Denton Community Theatre When: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday Where: Campus Theatre, 214 W. see; it is also necessary to focus on what they will hear — the play’s wit, which Bolen said he loves. “Other than Shakespeare, Wilde could be the most quotable playwright around,” he said. Bolen decided to approach the play authentically, but taking on this English comedy of manners is no easy feat because the language is very dense. “If you forget any lines, you can’t ad-lib,” said Karen Gossett, who plays the governess Miss Prism, comparing the language of Wilde with that of Shakespeare. If someone drops a word, it is usually the one that helps a person remember his or her line, she said. She said she believes it is important for the audience to understand the language and that is their job as actors. “We have a lot of work to do with the audience,” Gossett said. But the Guyer High School speech teacher said she enjoys performing the English comedy.
“You really have to dissect the script,” she said, mentioning that she still learns about her character every day. In the play, the characters are a reflection of their relationships, Bolen said, so that has to come across on stage. If a character isn’t different at the end of the scene than at the beginning, the actor isn’t doing his job, Bolen said. But he said he has a really
good cast and he hasn’t had to go over the basics of acting. “We don’t have a weak link,” Bolen said. “And that’s so nice.” Many members of the cast and crew are affiliated with the Denton school district. Bolen is a theater and debate teacher at Guyer High School. Jeannene Abney, who plays Lady Bracknell, is the head theater director at Ryan High School. Andrea Avery, who plays Gwendolen, is a graduate of Ryan High School, and Jonathan Dickson, who plays Jack, is a graduate of Denton High School. Bolen said he is excited to have the Denton school district connection. “We have had so much fun in the rehearsals,” he said. RACHEL MEHLHAFF can be reached at 940-5666897. (who also co-wrote and directed), Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and others, including a couple of surprise
cameos. The plot involves a group of assassins on a secret yet dangerous CIA mission in South America, but story takes a clear backseat to
shootouts and explosions that grow tiresome. Rated R, 103 minutes. — T.J. Inception (###1/2) The latest mind-

bending thriller from visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) is about Dom (Leonardo DiCaprio), a man who specializes in the illegal practice of extraction, or stealing secrets from a person’s mind while the victim is dreaming. In what he hopes will be his last job, Dom must implant an idea in the dream of the heir to a corporation (Cillian Murphy) rather than extract it. At times, Inception threatens to collapse under the weight of its own ambition, but in a summer of sequels and retreads, the level of inspiration alone is praiseworthy. Terrific supporting cast includes Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph GordonLevitt, Michael Caine and Tom Berenger. Rated PG-13, 148 minutes. — T.J. The Other Guys A detective more interested in paperwork (Will Ferrell) and a street-tough cop (Mark Wahlberg) are partnered up. With Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — The Associated Press Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D In a world overrun with the walking dead, Alice (Milla Jovovich) continues her battle against Umbrella Corp., rounding up survivors along the way. Joined by an old friend, Alice and her group set out for a rumored safe haven in Los Angeles. Instead of sanctuary, they find the city overrun with zombies, and a trap about to spring. Rated R, 96 minutes. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (##) This outrageously high-energy comedy, based on the series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, has a visual style that’s fearless if nothing else. British director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) swings for the fences, even if he whiffs. Scott (Michael Cera) is a quirky musician trying to get over a bad breakup when he meets a new girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), whom he must win over by defeating her seven exboyfriends in a series of video game showdowns. The story and actors seem an afterthought to the frenetic camerawork and stylistic trickery. Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — T.J. Takers (##) Stylish but generic thriller starring hip-hop artist T.I. as an ex-con who rejoins his old gang of bank robbers for one last heist, but has his motives questioned, and the hardened cop (Matt Dillon) who has been frustrated by the criminals’ high-tech elusiveness for years. The film maintains a breathless pace, with some impressive stunts and chase sequences along the way. But the screenplay is no Ocean’s Eleven in its slick attempt to capture camaraderie among thieves. The cast includes Idris Elba, Paul Walker and Chris Brown. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes. — T.J. The Town (####) Ben Affleck directed and co-wrote this heist thriller set in Boston’s Charlestown neighborhood. He heads a gang of four locals who commit bank and armored car robberies. He also falls for a bank manager (Rebecca Hall) who becomes unwittingly involved with him. Fast, well-paced and finely acted with a good cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, Blake Lively and Chris Cooper. Rated R, 124 minutes. — B.A.
