ox and the Bird released Floating Feather in July, but that didn’t stop the Dallas band from making its Saturday night gig at Dan’s Silverleaf a Denton CD release party. The band put out a series of live recordings in 2009, all recorded at an East Dallas house show venue called Annex House. Last year, the group put out a single, “Rome.” Then came 2011. “We wanted to sound like a group that got together to play music — you can hear a lot of imperfections, you can hear the floor creak, you can hear a train going by in the background,” said band member Daniel T. Hall, who coordinated the production of Floating Feather. “We wanted the music to be played correctly,” accordion player Dan Bowman said. “We just wanted whatever happened in the room to be part of the record.” Fox and the Bird started when a group of songwriters saw casual gatherings turn into picking and jam sessions. Bowman described the band as a small folk choir, where every musician plays enough instruments to fill the trunk of a compact car. Floating Feather is a fulllength, mostly acoustic album with 11 fleshed-out tracks. In terms of melody, things bounce along merrily, a la They Might Be Giants. Harmonies are church-choir pretty. Lyrics are reminiscent of the macabre and imagina-

tive, of folk music by Welsh immigrants to Appalachia. “Hey Sister” is the most overtly country song, with a chorus of “aroos” filling in for the song’s coyotes. Hall said the record reflects both the spontaneity and the two-year, practiced ease of the band’s sound. “I think there’s a little bit of both,” he said. “When we sat down to play the album, there were some songs we’d been playing for two years. But our method of recording was ‘Let’s see what comes up.’ There were moments of spontaneity. If you play with a group of people long enough, you get an idea of who will do what, and you can take off and improvise here and there.” While Denton folk luminaries Doug Burr and Sarah Jaffe write music that seems fraught with longing and despair, Fox and the Bird

have an album of songs that are loaded lyrically with multiple meanings and some sadness (“Old Mother”), although the music itself is happy. Optimistic, even. The Denton connection with the group is solid. Petra Kelly of Denton’s Spooky Folk plays violin for the band, and the musicians move in the same circles as local Americana luminaries. Bowman said Denton’s tireless Ryan Thomas Becker is counted among the band’s influences. ampire Weekend took a while to figure it out. The band’s use of basic, tribal beats seemed especially stark when it was surrounded by gentler folk trends. But now, armed with the Motown-bred groove to which Foster the People can attribute mainstream radio success, Nurses blankets straight-ahead rhythm with the spacey dreampop the framework has always seemed to beg for. The idea that a darker shade of funk has a place in atmospheric pop is affirmed by the Portland three-piece. Trot out your hidden talent MTD judges want to see your jokes, music or moves Music Theatre of Denton is taking a cue from a popular reality television talent show. “Denton’s Got Talent is seeking local solo performers and acts that make music, do standup, dance, juggle or the like, to audition for a two-part finale on Oct. 14-15. The grand finale will be Oct. 16. Auditions will be on Tuesday and Wednesday at

the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Contenders must call to register for a three-minute time slot by calling the theater office at 940-381-3562. Contenders will compete in either the student category (18 or younger) or adult (19 and older). A panel of judges will select the performers who will compete Oct. 14-16. Winners get cash prizes. All who audition get a free one-year membership with the company. Entry fees are $25 for adults, $15 for students. — Lucinda Breeding

The resulting disc is full of snaps and doo-wop against layered soundscapes. Cervantes once said that reading a translation is like looking at a tapestry from the back, and that’s what Dracula does for R&B. Listen, and you hear all the suggestion between

those timeless lines and hooks of the genre that resonate so hard with audiophiles like Nurses — who love Prince. The record dropped on Sept. 20, and Nurses comes to Denton on Monday with Dominant Legs supporting. — Lyndsay Knecht

OPENING FRIDAY Dream House A high-powered New York publisher (Daniel Craig) quits his job and moves his family to a quaint New England town, only to discover their new home was once a grisly murder scene and they might be the killer’s next targets. With Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz and Marton Csokas. Directed by Jim Sheridan (Brothers). Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — Los Angeles Times Love Crime (###1/2) Smart, devious French language film about a corporate vulture (Kristin Scott Thomas) who mentors a younger woman (Ludivine Sagnier) while also undermining her and seducing her boyfriend. Revenge follows but in a

most unexpected way. Rapidly paced with twists aplenty in Alain Corneau’s last film. Not rated, 104 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen Machine Gun Preacher A former drug dealer (Gerard Butler) becomes a minister and establishes an orphanage for refugee child soldiers in Sudan. With Michelle Monaghan, Kathy Baker and Michael Shannon. Rated R, 123 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — LAT My Afternoons With Margueritte (###) Gerard Depardieu stars as a cantankerous, functionally illiterate handyman in a small French village who meets a 95-year-old woman, Margeritte (Gisele Casadesus), while feeding pigeons in the park. They find combined interests and mutual understanding, which eventually enriches and changes both their lives. But enough other things happen in the village and with its goofy inhabitants to elevate this warm drama above typical similar fare. Not rated, 82 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. Restless (##1/2) In what is more or less an updating of Love Story, a quirky young woman (Mia Wasikowska) dying of cancer meets a quirky young man (Henry Hopper) at a funeral (shades of Harold and Maude). They become intensely attached to each other even though their future is apparent. But, before,

they indulge in things fun-loving and life-affirming. Warmly emotional if contrived film from Gus Van Sant. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas and Plano. — B.A. [Expletive] Year When a renowned actress (Ellen Barkin) abandons her successful career for seclusion, her peace is disrupted by the noisy construction of neighboring housing developments. Before long, she discovers that she left behind the only thing she really cared about. With Luke Grimes and Bob Einstein. Not rated, 90 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in Dallas. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (###) Surprisingly funny and clever horror satire about a group of beautiful young people who, in good horror cliche fashion, go to a remote cabin in the woods for the weekend. Two rough-hewn good ol’ boys lurk nearby, and, although they are harmless, the group mistakes their intentions to hilarious and deadly results. Rated R, 89 minutes. At the Inwood in Dallas. — B.A. What’s Your Number? Fearing that she might have passed over her one true love, a woman (Anna Faris) looks back at the last 20 men with whom she’s had relationships. With Chris Evans, Zachary Quinto and Andy Samberg. Rated R, 106 minutes. — LAT

NOW PLAYING Abduction A young man (Taylor Lautner) who has always felt disconnected from his life begins to piece together his true identity, but he is targeted by assassins and must fight to survive. With Lily Collins, Alfred Molina, Jason Isaacs and Sigourney Weaver. Directed by John Singleton (Four Brothers). Rated PG-13, 139 minute. — LAT A Dolphin Tale (##1/2) Formulaic family film based on the true story of a Clearwater, Fla., boy (Nathan Gamble) who discovers a wounded dolphin on the beach who has lost its tail. He helps relocate the dolphin to an animal rehabilitation facility. There, a friendly marine biologist (Harry Connick Jr.) nurses the dolphin back to health with the help of a military expert (Morgan Freeman) in prosthetics. With Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson. Rated PG, 113 minutes. — B.A. Drive (###) Ryan Gosling stars as a mysterious loner who drives cars for movie stunts and the occasional heist. Eventually, he tackles a doomed robbery mainly for the love of a woman (Carey Mulligan). After that comes a series of violent and bloody happenings. Nicolas Winding Refn directed a compelling film reminiscent of many past similar films of the genre. With Bryan Cranston and Albert Brooks. Rated R, 100 minutes. — B.A. The Help (##1/2) Tate Taylor directs from Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel about life in early 1960s Jackson, Miss. All the young white women except one (Emma Stone) treat the African-American help atrociously, particularly Aibileen (Viola Davis). The excess of subplots may mar the film’s rhythm, but they provide for an able supporting cast of Allison Janney, Mary Steenburgen, Sissy Spacek, Aunjanue Ellis and others. Rated PG-13, 137 minutes. — B.A. Killer Elite (##) Jason Statham takes the lead role as a mercenary hired to hunt down and kill three former British secret service agents in London. Clive Owen plays the agent out to stop him, while Robert DeNiro sits captured in an Oman prison. Based on an alleged true story, the film does little more than give Statham a chance to do what he does best. Rated R, 100 minutes. — B.A. The Lion King 3-D A 3-D version of the classic animated film about a young lion cub who must overcome his devious uncle to lead their kingdom. With the voices of Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg and James Earl Jones. Rated G, 87 minutes. — LAT Moneyball (###) Brad Pitt stars in this entertaining but somewhat repetitious true story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane. When forced to field a team with limited funds, he upsets the tradition-laden sport of baseball with the help of a young Yale economist (Jonah Hill). But they get results. With Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright.

enced stoner comedy, with Rogen’s Kyle chasing women and making endless sexual jokes. When Kyle remains offscreen, Adam thankfully finds time to confer with inexperienced young counselor Katie (Anna Kendrick). He also ingests marijuana with two older fellow patients (Philip Baker Hall and Matt Frewer). Something as serious as a life-threatening tumor on a young person can never find total resolution in a two-hour narrative. But 50/50 somehow finds the recipe to blend its somber look at death with its healthy dose of humor. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle. othing is as funny as cancer. Or, at least that’s the premise behind 50/50, a new black-humorinfused comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This intentionally tactless film skirts, and occasionally overwhelms, good taste with its surplus of bleak gags about the plight of Adam (GordonLevitt), a 27-year-old man who finds a lump on his spine and then uses the malady as a punch line, or as a gimmick to meet women. Eventually, in good narrative form, he uses his condition to confront his mortality and, finally, to realize what makes life worthwhile.

In between, director Jonathan Levine, from Will Reiser’s script, jokes about but also examines the more serious side of Adam’s dilemma. The film bravely addresses death, both in the tragic form of losing a life before its time but also in the form it takes less surprisingly, but still tragically, on the aged. There’s the respect that makes calamity of so long life. Which brings us to a spoiler

alert: Everyone dies (although maybe not in 50/50, where the body count is surprisingly limited). While not everyone in 50/50 accepts this obvious terminal fact, those who do seem to achieve an equilibrium denied the deniers. Adam lives with Rachel (Bryce Dallas Howard) when he receives his diagnosis and begins chemotherapy. His loss of energy and his gradually diminished physical state strain their relationship. This slack looks to be taken up both by Adam’s hovering mother (Anjelica Huston) and by his raunchy best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen).
