T
he Killhawks bill themselves as a hybrid of rock and country. The hard-rocking local band specializes in bare-knuckle roadhouse thrash, but it could just as well rock the house of a blues club.
TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend
Why the blues? Well, let’s look at the cast of characters rounding out the band’s lyrics. Underhanded, emasculating women? Check. Lovelorn guys nursing a bottle and a bruised ego? Check. And rough-hewn, ticked-off vocals? Oh, check. The Killhawks deliver the key ingredients of the blues, even if the rhythm is rock and the guitars favor clipped chops over wavering wails. The Killhawks are the brainchild of Wes Pitzer and Greg Altuna, both of whom have done their time in touring

The Killhawks will take on music by the Foo Fighters at Hailey’s on Friday. The Killhawks are, from left, Wes Pitzer, Joe Rosenthal, Alex Maples and Greg Altuna. bands. They picked up bassist Joe Rosenthal and drummer Alex Maples. The group is at its best when it drops the bravado a bit in favor of moodier poisons. “Dead Inside” is a worthy send-off to a woman too addicted for an intervention. “Misery” is the closest thing
the band has to pop, but avoids Top 40 cliches by showing a chink in the armor while trying to hide it with forceful hooks and into-the-breach drumming. The Killhawks play a showcase for their label on Friday, when Do For It Records hosts a Halloween show at Hailey’s
Club. The Killhawks will cover the Foo Fighters, with other bands trying on Pantera and Smashing Pumpkins. There’ll also be a costume contest — one of three at Hailey’s this Halloween weekend. Sounds like: One part the Black Crowes, one part Bad Company, with a pinch of Charlie Daniels. Shaken hard and served straight. They’re with the band: Wes Pitzer, vocals and guitars; Greg Altuna, guitars and vocals; Joe Rosenthal, bass; and Alex Maples, drums. Details: Doors open at 8 p.m. Friday at Hailey’s Club, 122 W. Mulberry St. Each band pays tribute to another act: the Killhawks (the Foo Fighters), Shaolin Death Squad (Muse), Trebuchet (Smashing Pumpkins), the House Harkonnen (Pantera) and the Spectacle (Dethklok). Cover is $6 for ages 21 and older, $8 for those younger than 21.

J
ulie Brinker knew she was going to have to make some cuts to Macbeth as she prepared for Denton Community Theatre’s upcoming drama. Vague political references courting the royals in Shakespeare’s England were out. The blood was in. Fans of the Bard are doubtless ready for the bloodbath, and if Denton Community Theatre patrons are expecting a sanitized version of a story about murder, war and betrayal, they’ll get a surprise. The plot is pretty simple: Macbeth fights hard as a general for the king, is repaid with a beefy title and then lets it all go to his head. As so often happens in Shakespearean drama, heads roll. Brinker, a theater teacher at North Central Texas College and the community outreach director of the community theater, said things fell into place somehow when the company held auditions. “So often, when you see Macbeth, Macbeth is this 40or 50-something, grizzled warrior with a trophy wife who manipulates him with her sexuality. I wanted someone who could have a soul mate in Lady Macbeth,” Brinker said. “I lucked out. I got this hot young couple to play those roles and it’s been pretty cool to watch

these little moments they create. There’s real chemistry there.” A recent rehearsal confirmed it. Jordan Love cuts an impressive figure in the title role with broad shoulders and a real sword, and Ash Robbins is Lady Macbeth with ginger hair and
one heck of a heated-up, pointed gaze. Pat Watson is substantial, in both figure and dramatic effect, as the ill-fated Macduff. Brinker hasn’t soft-pedaled the violence in a blooddrenched story. She’s made some surprising choices that up the dramatic tension and play

Others will probably avert their eyes and click their tongues. Brinker has set the show the hardscrabble Scottish moorland of the 1040s. Macbeth and his brethren live among the rocky woods in the center of the country. The Denton Bach Society will present “Church Music from the Italian Baroque” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2255 N. Bonnie Brae St. The program will be dedicated to the late Monsignor Charles King, the longtime pastor of the church and a supporter of the Bach Society. “The Italian repertoire from this era tends to be light, joyous, and sunny, yet full of contrast and passion,” said Henry Gibbons, artistic director and conductor of the Bach choir. “This music was all written for the Catholic faith. We are sad-
dened that Monsignor King will not be with us to enjoy this music of and for the Catholic Church.” Performers include the Denton Bach Choir and the Denton Bach Players, with soloists Beverly Hoch, Fabiana Gonzalez, Kyle Jones and Aaron Harp. The performance spans the 17th and early 18th centuries and includes works for single and double chorus, with orchestra and continuo. Though far from six feet under, Denton’s Day of the Dead embraces the dark By Lucinda Breeding
T Features Editor
hree years ago, Denton’s Day of the Dead was but a glimmer in David Pierce’s eye. The composer, horn player and Halloween devotee had been dreaming about celebrating the fall festival in downtown Denton for years.

The glimmer isn’t gone. It’s just materialized into Denton’s Day of the Dead, an allday Industrial Street party to celebrate Halloween in all its macabre glory. The short city block will be dressed up in spooky faces and forms. Vendors will sell handmade seasonal trinkets and treats. The event culminates in two performances of Pierce’s Cirque du Horror: A Halloween Spooktacular, an original Halloween musical in the spirit of Arizona’s Bird Cage Theatre, a 19th-century saloon and theater immortalized in the film Tombstone. Pierce conducts the orchestra in red-face, horns and Victorian coat and tails. The Orchestra of the Undead? Musicians masquerading as skeletons. Pierce said Denton’s Day of the Dead See DAY OF THE DEAD on 10

moved the musical out of Dan’s Silverleaf — though there will be a matinee of the show at the bar on Sunday. The show has gotten bigger, and attendees should expect big visuals and bright colors. Pierce hinted that Danny Haslett, the show’s set designer, has bumped the show up to a different level visually. Haslett met Pierce years ago through a mutual friend, Robert Gomez, who plays with Pierce in the Afro-Cuban band Mi Son, Mi Son, Mi Son. “The first year that Cirque happened, my wife and I and our two kids went to Denton to see it,” Haslett said. “The show was amazing and the most fun I’ve had at Halloween since childhood. I knew then that if he was going to do it again next year I wanted to be a part of it.” Haslett said the musical had all the ingredients for a Halloween well spent. He had been reading about Picasso, Sartre and the Ballets Russes when he saw the show. “The spirit of the thing, the energy, the combination of vaudeville humor and spookiness was great,” Haslett said. “As an artist, and being aware of the collaborative efforts of visual artists, musicians and theater in the past, I offered to help with next year’s production. I worked on backdrops, set props and venue decorations.” Dan Mojica, owner of Dan’s Siverleaf, said he had no problem with vouching for Pierce so that Cirque might turn into Denton’s Day of the Dead — an event that would need buy-in from the Industrial Street Guild, an association of the businesses on the block. “I was very fortunate that Dave asked me to use Dan’s as a starting point for him to present the first edition of this, quite literally, brilliant musical, theatrical piece that he created,” Mojica said. “Having worked with him before, it was a no-brainer to offer my services sight unseen.” Alan Pierce (no relation to David) is the owner of Rooster’s Roadhouse on Industrial Street, and he said he joined the Day of the Dead when

Day of the Dead “His vision is certainly becoming reality.” — Alan Pierce, owner of Rooster’s Roadhouse David Pierce made a presentation to the guild. “I think that David is doing a great job of taking his show to the next level, especially considering that he does this not to make money but to share Cirque du Horror with the community,” Alan Pierce said. “His vision is certainly becoming a reality. He has surrounded himself with very talented people who care as much about this show as he does and have volunteered their time for this event.” Mojica was just as charmed as the crowd was by the inaugural Cirque. The bar was packed two hours before show time, and patrons in costume cheered for players handpicked from the local music and arts scene — Paul Slavens, Joe Cripps, Bach Norwood and Karen MacIntyre. “The way that the music is so seamlessly synchronized with the action on stage is pretty overwhelming,” Mojica said. “What is equally impressive is that the libretto is so current and cross-generational. You can bring your kids to the show and they’ll be totally mesmerized by the show but there’s also content that’s there for the parents to enjoy as well.” Pierce said he’s rearranged a number of songs from the original. He said he’s especially looking forward to three numbers. One of the numbers, “The Old Clock,” borrows a page out of Disney’s book, with a Fantasia-like plot that finds a grandfather clock coming to life, marching out of the house to attack the residents of a sleepy, unsuspecting town. “It’s kind of like that ‘Pink Elephants on Parade’ song,” Pierce said. “It’s little sinister, but it’s whimsical and goofy, too.” Pierce said MacIntyre, owner of Green Space Arts Collective
and a choreographer, has turned the music into a spooky, visual sequence. A dancer represents each hour, leaping off the clock face and rushing the audience. “I’ve been involved with Cirque since the first show in 2009,” MacIntyre said. “It is great fun to be a part of this as both a choreographer and a performer. I loved the 1980s space alien number [in 2009, which included Paul Slavens wearing a headband with two sparkly balls on springs], but what I remember most is David [Pierce] as the devil conducting that fabulous skeleton orchestra. I appreciate Dave’s storytelling ability, but his lovely rhythms and instrumentation are what drew me in.” Another number Pierce is anxious to see on stage is a new song, “The Cat, the Crow & the Old Oak Tree.” It calls for another dance number by MacIntyre’s crew. Pierce and collaborator Robert Hamilton have been working weekends for a number about a mouse named Mildred. “We’ve always talked about how the show is organic, and then we get to the Mildred song and we did this animation,” Pierce said. Hamilton built a puppet stage, and then built puppets for the song’s characters — a mouse, a big black spider and a legion of smaller spiders. Using the kinds of stage craft probably employed at the Bird Cage Theatre, Pierce said Hamilton created a three-dimensional performance. With no multimedia in this year’s Cirque, Pierce said the show retains that old, dusty 1800s-era feel. “It’s all dowel rods and papier mache dressed up. Real simple stuff. I still love that idea of people walking into a tent and then being taken into this oldfashioned, carnival-type atmosphere,” Pierce said. Haslett said the creator of the event has insisted that the show run on elbow grease, not heavy machinery. “One of the concerns we discussed was keeping the lowtech, vaudeville, intimate feel and still being able to have the
show at a larger venue,” Haslett said. “The street festival in front of the original venue [Dan’s Silverleaf] seems to be the ideal next step. “A side note: Both of my children, Lillian, 9 and Aydin, 12, were in last year’s show. David asked them last year if they would be interested and without hesitation they both said yes. They will be in the show again this year.” Industrial Street will be blocked off on Saturday, and the Cirque stage will be located at the intersection of Industrial and Mulberry streets. Jean Seward, a physical therapist and owner of Seniors in Motion on Industrial Street, said the city block might be small, but can do big things to celebrate Denton. “Industrial Street is a neighborhood where we all work together on common projects
and goals that support and promote the community of Denton,” she said. “It is a unique opportunity to host a family-oriented fall event. We are holding a bake sale and will ask our Seniors in Motion folks and staff to bake cookies and Halloween goodies for the festival.” Pierce is already thinking about next year. He was pleased that local stakeholders helped the organizers raise $5,921 during a Kickstarter campaign. “Oh, man,” Pierce said. “This year has already been a ‘next year’ deal. There were all sorts of things we wanted to do this year but just couldn’t. We want to make them happen, though.” LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-5666877. OPENING FRIDAY
Anonymous (#1/2) Absurd rumors and flaky conspiracy theories about Elizabeth I and her reign receive airing in this dull, dreary, muddled mess. Elizabeth (played young by Joely Richardson, with her mother Vanessa Redgrave as the aging monarch) commits incest, gives birth and involves herself with absurd intrigues. Another silly subplot plays out strictly for laughs about how Shakespeare was not the author of his plays. The colorless settings, filled with characters wearing bushy beards and laughable wigs, help to obfuscate the soporific plot. Rated PG-13, 130 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — Boo Allen Hell and Back Again (###) Documentary filmmaker Danfung Dennis breaks up his narrative into two equally harrowing parts. He focuses on a soldier stationed in Afghanistan but also follows him when he returns wounded to his U.S. home. Constant danger comes in the first part when the filmmakers are caught in gunfire and in the second when the soldier displays highly volatile and erratic behavior. Not rated, 88 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. In Time (###) In this futuristic science-fiction flick from writer-director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca), time is money, literally. People quit aging at 25 and, at 50, look like Olivia Wilde. Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried play a pair of lovers who become Robin Hood (and Bonnie and Clyde), “stealing” time from the rich and giving it to the oppressed poor. Cillian Murphy plays the “timekeeper” chasing them. Repetitive and somewhat transparent but thoughtprovoking on many levels. Rated PG13, 109 minutes. — B.A. Like Crazy (##) This doomed romance creates an increasing sense of tension, a tightening in your gut — but only because these two people are so incredibly annoying together, you’d much rather see them apart. Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones do have some chemistry early on, though, in the halcyon glow of their blossoming relationship. They fall hard and fast, but the morning she’s supposed to fly back to London because her visa has run out, she decides she’ll just stay. So she sticks around for one more blissful summer, with some serious consequences.

more unbalanced. Some of her escalating troubles can be understood with the help of the flashbacks. But since little else of her is known, her troubles could have sprung from elsewhere, manifesting themselves only when cinematically timely. Her troubles, like much in the film, seem entirely arbitrary, caused only because they are written in the script. Elizabeth Olsen has little to work with in creating a full character. She lands in her quasi-comatose state and mostly stays there, with little show of emotion and rarely a smile or frown. I felt the same way.
The Rum Diary (###) Based on Hunter S. Thompson’s heavily autobiographical novel that he wrote as a 22-year-old in the early 1960s after a stint as a newspaper reporter in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This is Thompson pre-Gonzo, just a young novelistreporter (technically an alter ego named Paul Kemp, played by Johnny Depp) trying to find his voice as a writer. Entertaining and well-intended, the film comes just shy of discovering its own voice. With Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli and Giovanni Ribisi. Rated R, 120 minutes. — AP
artha Marcy May Marlene strives to be an intense, mysterious, psychological portrait of the main character, an enigmatic creature played by Elizabeth Olsen. She says little, sleeps a lot and shuffles around all day as if in a coma. So little of her is revealed in the new film from writer-director Sean Durkin, it is hard to understand why she does the few things she does or says the few things she says. With such limitations on his main character, Durkin gives himself a challenge, one that cannot always be labeled a triumph. Martha could have been portrayed as carrying a world of burdens. But what we see of
her is, with some troubling exceptions, relatively mild by movie-problem standards. Durkin obviously wants to reveal Martha’s problems gradually, but he slows the narrative to a funereal pace while trying to create an eerie atmosphere to go along with his semi-mysterious character. Durkin also fails in his obvious goal of creating a tension-filled melodrama with a scent of paranoia.
When first seen, Martha escapes from what appears to be a cult-like commune in upstate New York. She calls her estranged older sister, Lucy (Sarah Paulson), who picks her up and takes her to stay with her and her husband Ted (Hugh Dancy) at their picturesque summer home on a Connecticut lakeshore. They spend time together, and Martha, in flashback, reveals some of her recent past at the commune. As far as sinister movie-communes go, this one looks fairly standard: a domineering leader (John Hawkes), surrounded by mindless acolytes who work for him and/or sleep with him, including Martha. As Martha spends more time with Lucy, Martha becomes
Rated PG-13, 89 minutes. — The Associated Press Nuremberg (###1/2) Filmmaker Sandra Schulberg uses footage that originally ran as evidence during the 1945 Nazi war crimes trial in Nuremberg, Germany. She then mixes that with filmed footage of the trial itself, as the surviving military officers and the Third Reich architects stand trial. The indicting images of liberated concentration camps and destroyed cities will always evoke powerful responses. Not rated, 80 minutes. At the Angelika Plano. — B.A.
Oranges and Sunshine (###) A social worker (Emily Watson) in 1986 Nottingham, England, learns about the deportations of many children to Australia years before. The children have now grown to adulthood and many want to discover their roots. She goes to Australia to investigate, landing in a politically charged situation in both countries. Powerful examination about the pull of family and origins. Based on true events. With Hugo Weaving and David Wenham. Rated R, 106 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A.
Puss in Boots (####) A spinoff of the Shrek franchise, this is actually a prequel, providing the origin story of the diminutive, swashbuckling kitty voiced with great charisma, as always, by Antonio Banderas. At the film’s start, Puss is an outlaw in his own small, Spanish hometown. Flashbacks take us to his childhood at an orphanage, where he was best friends with a brainy, ambitious Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). Quick, lively, family entertainment. With Salma Hayek. In 3-D. Rated PG, 90 minutes. — AP
