ames Galway might have cornered the market on classical flute performance, but Bobbi Humphrey has made a name for herself as a jazz flutist since 1971, when she became the first woman signed to Blue Note Records. Humphrey is the centerpiece the Denton African American Scholarship Foundation’s first gala, which will raise money for Denton AfroAmerican Scholarship Inc. The foundation gala starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. Humphrey was born in Marlin — a small town 30 minutes outside of Waco — but grew up in Dallas. She started studying flute in high school. She was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie at a contest, and performed during amateur night at the Apollo Theater, the historic black theater in Harlem. She’s recorded six albums, the latest of which was Passion Flute (1994). Denton Afro-American Scholarship Inc. was founded in 1984 and gave a single award of $250. The foundation has given more than $200,000 in scholarships since to graduates of Denton public schools. The gala also includes food and a performance by Andrea Perry. Jimmy Mirikitani sold paintings and drawings of cats on the street in New York City. His kinship with a filmmaker unearthed his life story — and his art.
Outsider art UNT series examines man who went from homeless to cause celebre
Artist Jimmy Mirikitani came close to being a person thrown away. A documentary filmmaker met Mirikitani living on the streets of New York City just months before Sept. 11, 2001. When the World Trade Center was felled by the infamous passenger jets, that filmmaker opened her home to the 80something artist as an escape from the dust that boiled up over much of Manhattan. From the relationship came The Cats of Mirikitani, a film that traces Mirikitani’s past — including his time in a U.S. internment camp for people of Japanese descent during World War II — to a present that includes filmmaker Linda Hattenforg.
The University of North Texas Fine Arts Series will screen the film at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Lyceum, located in the Student Union, with a panel discussion following at 8:30 p.m. An exhibit of Mirikitani’s art opened Tuesday at UNT’s Cora Stafford Gallery on Tuesday and continues through Oct. 14. An opening reception starts at 5 p.m. today. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The gallery is located at 1102 W. Hickory St. at Ponder Street. Tickets to the Oct. 27 film screening are $10 for the public, $5 for UNT faculty and staff and free for UNT students with valid ID. — Lucinda Breeding

The Angelus finds music in a desolate landscape
T
he Angelus has enjoyed a place of prominence in Denton’s indie music scene for a while. The band, anchored by Dallas artist Emil Rapstine and one-time University of North Texas student Justin Evans, is equal parts literate and creative. The lyrics seem inspired by Poe, Rimbaud and the psalmists. And yet the narrative through the songs of the group’s latest album, On a Dark & Barren Land, could just as easily be the stuff of a post-apocalyptic fantasy. The band reveals its ninetrack album on Saturday. The group celebrates the release with a Denton show at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. The two musicians recorded the album with guitarist/ organist Casey Clark, bassist Matt Chaney and keyboardist Jay Allen. There’s a proper, AngloAmerican gospel undercurrent to what the Angelus does. Maybe it’s the dirgelike drone of the organ marching forth, or the sad

guitars. Could the Angelus use an editor? Well, yes. “Gone Country clocks in at more than six minutes, and “Sudden Burst of Hope passes the eight-minute mark by a hair. The songs could say as much if they were half as long, but the band does have a way of migrating in song. At the end of both tracks, we are in a new place. And we have been through something. Call it the Midlake school of rock, if you will, because the preview of On a Dark & Barren Land hints at an album that isn’t made up of easy singles. No, this is a record that will likely command more attention than, say, a Jay-Z track requires. Sounds like: A mad scientist and thwarted musician spliced Jim Morrison and Morrissey together and programmed him to record music found in a piano bench abandoned in a recording studio by Lift to
Experience. That music would have come from Lift’s “blue period, if it had one. We’ll hazard a guess that fans of Rush will find something to love in this record, even if it doesn’t rock with the same sharp, metallic edge. Trivia: An arts writer at the Denton Record-Chronicle sent a Denton composer and director to Rapstine when he asked for some candidates for the title role in a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Rapstine doesn’t have the shrill scream of Ted Neeley, but we still wonder what he’d have made of the role. er debut album Suburban Nature came out May of last year, but Denton singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe said it feels like “three years have passed” since that album and her latest release. The Way Sound Leaves a Room is a multimedia package, with a DVD of her February show at the prestigious Wyly Theatre in Dallas. The package also includes a CD of Jaffe’s covers and some new, lo-fi original tunes. The breakout star of the Denton indie music scene said she doesn’t do post-tour sabbaticals. She writes on the road. She writes after a tour ends. She writes all the time. “I know that for me, as an artist, downtime isn’t good. It’s depressing,” Jaffe said. “I know that for me it’s important to keep working.” Her tour last year with Denton’s Midlake was particularly fruitful. “A lot of it [material on The Way Sound Leaves a Room] came on the road, and some of them came right after I finished the tour with Midlake,” she said. “That’s where ‘A Sucker For Your Marketing’ and

Denton artist Sarah Jaffe said venturing into electronic music was natural. “I wouldn’t say it’s scary. Electronic music, it’s something I’ve enjoyed for a long time. When you change, your tastes change. I sometimes wonder if it’s something people are going to accept, yeah. But it felt like a natural move for me.”
‘The Way Sound Leaves a Room’ came from.” The album includes two covers, hip-hop star Drake’s heavily autotuned “Shut It Down” and Cold War Kids’ “Louder than Ever.” Jaffe said she sometimes has to defend pop music, the bane of many a music fan’s tastes. (Notice the ire reserved for the likes of Lady Gaga, who sports not just a fierce set of pipes but serious classical piano chops and education.) “Well yeah. I think there’s a lot to be said for really good pop music,” she said. “There was really good pop music before there was bad pop music. There are some Paul Simon songs that are really good pop songs.” She was drawn to “Shut It Down” because she likes Drake, and because the song jumped the typical hip-hop track. “A lot of hip-hop now is totally classless,” she said. “I like hip-hop, but, yeah, it’s gone into the gutter, pretty much. With ‘Shut It Down,’ there are a few crass words in the song, but it’s encouraging.” See JAFFE on 10

Jaffe The song is a monologue from Drake about a woman who is singular — in style, ability and presence. There’s a lot of sex in Drake’s groove, and Jaffe takes it to a different place. In her hands, the song is more anthemic, and deeper. Perhaps it’s that Jaffe takes the song out of the computer and puts it on the piano. It hearkens back to Tori Amos’ treatment of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” where the aggressive edge is traded for a more symphonic treatment. The listener hears new meaning and magic in such tributes. Jaffe records her most popular song, “Clementine,” as a piano ballad. The carefree bounce is gone, regret in its place. Jaffe said she’s drawn to the songs she covers, but also to the body of work of the songwriter. She said she’s a fan of R&B producer-songwriter-performer The-Dream, nee Terius Nash. “He’s done some amazing work,” she said. “He’s a behindthe-scenes kind of guy, but he’s done a lot of work that’s good. There’s an old school feel to it. Hip-hop, when it’s done with a lot of class, can be really good.” Jaffe fans have noticed the artist playing with electronic music, too. Jaffe’s a fan of Swedish musician Robyn, best known in the states for her Top 40 hits “Show Me Love” and “Do You Know (What It Takes).” “She’s a pop musician, yes, but a lot of her stuff is ballads,” Jaffe said. “She’s worked her ass off. She’s been working since she was 15. When someone’s a hard worker, I like and appreci-

So far, her covers sound darker than their pop sources. “There’s certainly a lot of pop out there I think could be done differently,” she said. “It’s fun to take that challenge of remaking something that you hear a lot and that a lot of people know.” Jaffe said The Way Sound Leaves a Room is the result of momentum and support. She credits her label, Dallas-based Kirtland Records, for its hand in her development. “It’s been a constant momentum between me and my label, and the shows,” Jaffe said. “This is all a collaborative effort between me and them and between me and my friends.” As for covers, Jaffe said she doesn’t watch the dearth of covers of her “Clementine” on YouTube. “I like it as much as I like to hear myself on video on a recording,” she said. “I can’t listen to them. It’s too embarrassing. In a good way, not a bad way.”

intricate dynamics found in Beau Willimon’s stage play, with subsequent screenplay by Willimon, Clooney and Grant Heslov. Paul Zara values loyalty above all else, making him both an anomaly in politics, as well as dispensable to those not so loyal. As the film unfolds, political give-and-take reveals itself in its ugliest forms. Politicians make deals they say they would never make, they compromise, and, worst of all, they show they are heavily flawed humans and not worthy of idolatry, regardless of political persuasion or ideology. As director, Clooney maintains a rapid, steady pace, aided by a strong story filled with unexpected twists and tortured characters who wrestle with their flaws, all convincingly portrayed by the excellent cast.

he political talk in The Ides of March is all liberal-Democratic. But the new psychological drama from director George Clooney has a more pressing, more bipartisan take-away message: Politics is not just dirty, it’s filthy. What the two main Democratic candidates say in Ides of March matters little, because it’s what goes on behind the scenes that merits our interest. One of the candidates is virtually unseen, while George Clooney plays the other in a supporting role. Only when going behind the scenes can it be demonstrated that a win-at-any-cost mentality must always give way to a greater Darwinian instinct for survival. Ultimately, selfpreservation trumps a campaign drone’s allegiance. In a cast headlined by heavyweights, Ryan Gosling stars as Stephen Myers, the second in

Rated R, 99 minutes. — B.A. The Help (##1/2) Tate Taylor directs from Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel about life in early 1960s Jackson, Miss. All the young white women except one (Emma Stone) treat the African-American help atrociously, particularly Aibileen (Viola Davis).
