Laughing through the tears ‘Funny Girl’ lets Brice tell her story of comedy, tragedy
W
hen it came time to put Funny Girl on a Denton stage, Clay White said, he knew he wouldn’t refer much to the 1968 film starring Barbra Streisand. White, who directs the show for Music Theatre of Denton, said this telling of the Fanny Brice story would be seen through that character’s eyes. Brice made a name for herself in the famous Ziegfeld Follies and went on to become a media mogul, conquering radio and stage with vim and vigor. White said there is plenty of depth in the show’s book, written by Isobel Lennart. “I saw a production of the show in Garland,” White said. “I really enjoyed the book. It’s not like other musical comedies; it’s a really deep, complex book. Her life was tragic in a lot
of ways, in spite of the fact that she was known for being a comedic actress. I also liked the love story between Fanny and Nick.” Funny Girl takes liberties with Brice’s life. It puts a rosy glow around the performer’s relationship with Nick Arnstein, who did time at Sing Sing prison in New York before the couple got together and who courted Brice to get to her wealth. The show produced a catalog of memorable songs: “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “People” and “My Man.” Ultimately, White said, the musical is a study of Brice, a deeply insecure woman who relied on her talent and charisma to get through hard times. “She had a lot of self-esteem issues,” White said. “She covers it up by using her sense of humor. She considered herself a comedienne, but I think of her as the equivalent to today’s Saturday Night Live characters.” Sketches were good to Brice.

Her bratty toddler character, Baby Snooks, was a radio star. Her work with the Ziegfeld Follies put her on the map as a performer. White is steering a 21-member cast through a musical that takes audiences from just around 1900 to the 1930s. Costume designer Audrey Lewis has had to build and rent vintage costumes that satisfy the formality of the early 1900s, when bustles and hats were the fashion, and into the 1930s, when hemlines shot upward and hair was bobbed. The New York City of the musical, with its New Amsterdam Theatre, is gussied up in gold because it was Brice’s goldmine. White said the musical is a suitable family show, with joy and sorrow coming in equal

I hope they fall in love with Fanny. Her life just falls apart, but she comes back. I think that shows a lot about her character.”

ndie musicians claim much of Denton’s music landscape, but Quentin Moore said there’s room enough for neo-soul and R&B. Moore, who got his start in serious music-making while at the University of North Texas, is staging the NeoSoul Extravaganza starting at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at J&J’s Pizza on the Square, 811 W. Oak St. “I’ve done a couple of these in Dallas, and this is about me wanting to bring it back to Denton, where it all started for me,” said Moore. The musician recently released his debut album, Vintage Love, a 16-track album that mixes influences from Al Green, Erykah Badu and Brian McKnight into Moore’s fresh take on a genre that, in comparison to the soft-core musings of hip-hop, seems positively quaint. “Neo-soul is exactly what it says. It’s new soul, or a rein-

carnation of soul. Some of the instrumentation is different, but it’s still soul,” Moore said. Moore started at UNT as a scholarship football player. When he graduated in 2007, he’d majored in business and honed the music skills he’d developed in church. “Music in church is actually kind of competitive. You better know your stuff, or you’re going to get talked about,” Moore said. Moore’s first instrument was the drum kit, but these days, he plays keyboard, guitar and bass, too. The Neo-Soul Extravaganza include the Dallasbased all-female band Beauty and the Beats, Angela Carter, Jaquai Wade and Moore as headliners. Moore said he’d like to bring more soul and R&B groups to local venues.
Quentin Moore “There’s a soul scene on campus at UNT, but I would like to see it get into more venues. I’ve played some local venues, like Hailey’s and Dan’s — those are great venues, and I’d like to get into them more,” he said. “It’s all about planning, because the venues in Denton are booked months in advance.” Cover for the show is $5. — Lucinda Breeding

UNT committee dedicates new art Today, the University of North Texas Art in Public Places Committee dedicates four paintings by alumni in the General Academic Building. The paintings are by Mariko Frost and Sarah Williams, who were both Master of Fine Arts students from 2006 to 2009 and are now teaching as adjunct faculty. The committee was started in 2008 to manage art acquisitions on campus. It is made up of various faculty and students. “It’s a very diverse group from people across campus, said Tracee Robertson, director of the UNT Art Gallery and a
member of the committee. The four paintings, which have been in the General Academic Building since fall 2009, were purchased through a grant from Wells Fargo. Robert Milnes, dean of the College of Visual Arts and Design and the committee’s chairman, will give the welcome and introduce UNT President Lane Rawlins. Wells Fargo representatives will attend, too. It will be time to thank and recognize the donors and artists, Robertson said. These paintings are included in the UNT art path, a selfguided walking tour of 36
works of art in public places on campus, Robertson said. Tour maps can be picked up at several places: the University Union Information Center, 1155 Union Circle; UNT on the Square, 109 N. Elm St.; the Alumni Center at Gateway Center, at Avenue D and Eagle Drive; and the College of Visual Arts and Design office and the UNT Art Gallery, both on the first floor of the Art Building. Today’s dedication program is at 3 p.m. in the General Academic Building, on the southeast corner of West Mulberry Street and Avenue B. — Rachel Mehlhaff

The band’s performances aren’t limited to venues. Two of Bee vs. Moth’s songs are featured on the seventh season of the PBS series Roadtrip Nation, and the band is composing an original score for the Alamo Drafthouse screening of The Cameraman, to be performed in late November. “Japanese action comic punk” is the self-prescribed style for Peelander-Z, which brings a show as unconventional as its music to Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios on Monday. In costumes reminiscent of Japanese anime, the three-man band encourages the audience to participate in the performance. A distinctly punk rock sound gives background to shenanigans like human bowling and the limbo. At past shows, the group has been known to turn the musical reins over to patrons while they focus on the performance aspect. While amped-up power chords and cacophonous drums provide the essential elements of punk rock, the lyrics add a playful feel to the tunes. “E-I-E-I-O,” Peelander-

Z’s take on “Old Macdonald Had a Farm,” is a prime example. One of their music videos, “Ninja-High Schooool,” shows the three Peelanders embroiled in a mortal battle with a giant squid. And yes, the squid is a regular at the live shows. From karate-chopping cymbals to staging onstage wrestling matches, the energy of Peelander-Z’s performances has been showcased at festivals from South by Southwest to Bonaroo and on TV shows like Comedy Central’s Upright Citizens Brigade, according to their website. OPENING FRIDAY I Spit on Your Grave (#1/2) The latest off the “torture porn” assembly line is a needless remake of the 1978 film that includes an extended backwoods gang-rape sequence during the first half, and then sees the victim (Sarah Butler) reappear after a few weeks to gain revenge by systematically torturing the perpetrators. It’s not the gratuitously lurid subject matter that causes the film to fail, but rather the inept direction and pacing that drains the movie of any rooting interest or suspense. Not rated, 108 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson It’s Kind of a Funny Story (###) Modest but amusing character-driven comedy from the directors of Half Nelson and Sugar about a depressed teen (Keir Gilchrist) who checks himself into an adult psychiatric ward for a week, where he gains a new outlook on life by befriending residents including Bobby (Zach Galifianakis) and Noelle (Emma Roberts). The film tackles some familiar territory and adds some unnecessary stylistic touches, but the performances add compassion and poignancy. Rated R, 101 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — T.J. Life as We Know It After a disastrous first date, Holly (Katherine Heigl) and Eric (Josh Duhamel) unexpectedly become caretakers of their goddaughter, a love for whom seems to be the only thing they have in common. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. My Soul to Take Riverton legend tells of a serial killer’s oath to come back to the town and kill the seven children who were born on the night he supposedly died. Sixteen years later, the town’s residents are disappearing again, making some wonder if the legend is true. Directed by Wes Craven. Rated R, 107 minutes. You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (##1/2) Woody Allen’s latest visits familiar themes: old man/ younger woman, infidelity, the absurdity of the paranormal. A London couple (Josh Brolin and Naomi Watts) bicker while he works on his latest novel and she finds their relationship suffocating. Meanwhile, her divorced parents (Gemma Jones and Anthony Hopkins) surprisingly find love with two new unlikely partners. Entertaining, but the mix of comedy with family drama ends up diluting both. ecretariat is the greatest racehorse of all time. Period. Most of the sport’s historians will tell you that. Yet newcomers to horse racing might not even get that sense from watching Secretariat, a glossy biopic of the horse that serves as a tribute both to the equine champion and to its fiercely independent owner. In fact, the film might as well be called Penny Tweedy, because hers is the bigger underdog story here. Penny (Diane Lane) makes a huge gamble that her dying father’s Kentucky horse farm can be saved from financial ruin, and she pins those hopes on a well-bred colt that she is awarded only after losing a coin flip with wealthy financier Ogden Phipps (James Cromwell). She hires eccentric trainer Lucien Lauren (John Malkovich) out of desperation, and the colt — who grows up with the nickname “Big Red” — eventually matures into Secretariat, who rewards his owner’s perhaps foolhardy leap of faith by winning the 1973 Triple Crown, including a 31-length domination of the Belmont Stakes that likely ranks as the greatest achievement in horse racing history. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole (##) Innovative visuals highlight this 3-D animated adventure from director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) about a pair of young owls who grow up on opposite sides of a legendary good-versus-evil battle for control of the species. There are some spectacular 3D flying sequences to behold, but the muddled story is probably too dark and scary for younger kids. So
what’s left is basically a talking-owl movie for adults. Good luck with that. Rated PG, 96 minutes. — T.J. Let Me In (###1/2) Mostly straightforward remake of last year’s clever Swedish thriller Let the Right One In is a tense and touching story of a preteen outcast (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who falls for the new girl next door, even when he finds out her true identity as a vampire. Writer-director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) adds some stylish touches without making any noteworthy improvements upon the original. His film works primarily
struggle to be accepted as a female owner, especially when dealing with the connections behind Secretariat’s main rival, Sham. Lane’s performance here is compelling enough to make you forgive the filmmakers’ decision to relegate the horse to supporting status. She gives Penny a captivating mix of strength and vulnerability. First and foremost, the film is designed as a slick crowdpleaser, and it’s effective because the true-life subject matter has so many unlikely twists. The racing sequences are staged with great precision and intimacy, but in a way that sacrifices the grandeur and spectacle of the Triple Crown events. In terms of horse racing movies, I’ll take National Velvet and Seabiscuit over this watered-down melodrama. But when it comes to the horse itself, my money will always be on Secretariat. Jesse Eisenberg stars as the Harvard undergraduate who wants to expand his social life and ends up creating the world’s foremost social networking website, making millions and being sued by everyone he considered a friend. Fast, funny, clever and well done. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — B.A.

utumn is officially here, and there’s no better time to get out with the kids and enjoy the cooler temperatures than the eighth annual Fall Family Festival, hosted by Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home this Saturday. “One of the things that makes Fall Festival special is that it’s a chance for CPCH to invite the community to come into our home,” said Caroline Lara, the agency’s director of advancement. The 17-acre campus is at the corner of Bernard and Greenlee streets and borders Interstate 35E. There’ll be plenty for kids to do, including hayrides, face painting, pony rides, giant inflatables, a petting zoo, a Hot Wheels race car track, “tangles and twists” hair sculpture and a trip to the pumpkin patch. There’s fun for the grown-ups too. Adults can check out the classic cars and trucks, hosted by FAT Cars, and Vietnam-era military vehicles presented by the Denton chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. This year, for the first time, festivalgoers can enter to win raffle prizes donated by the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Texas Motor Speedway, Grand Prairie Air Hogs, Frisco RoughRiders and many other organizations and businesses. Raffle tickets are $1 each, $5 for six tickets, $10 for 15 or $20 for “head-totoe” tickets, which span from the purchaser’s entire height. Kolache Haven will attempt to make it into the Guinness World Records with its 9-foot entry for the world’s largest sausage kolache, and once the information has been recorded around 1 p.m., it will be cut up and served to the crowd. Other food and drinks will also be available. “We will be using tickets this year in place of cash for food, drinks and activi-

Festival used toys, clothes, housewares and some holiday items. Sandelin Allstate Agency staff will hand out Child ID Kits. According to agency owner Karen Sandelin, the kits provide everything needed to record your child’s information for your permanent files. “Everything is done there on the spot,” Sandelin said. “We provide the parent with a child’s color photo, we record their height, weight, eye color, hair color, and the officers provide the fingerprints directly onto the kit.” Smile Magic Dental and Braces and Amerigroup Community Care will be on hand to provide information about how to sign up for dental and health services via the Children’s Health Insurance Program and Medicaid. The fall festival lets Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home welcome area residents to the campus and to “get a picture of how we help the community,” Lara said. “We’ve been in Denton since 1932, but there are a lot of people who aren’t familiar with what we do,” said Lara, who added that the nonprofit’s name is “misleading” and doesn’t adequately describe the services it offers.

“We are one agency that has three programs,” Lara said. Cumberland operates a licensed residential program for children and teens ages 5 through 17 through Texas Department of Family Services, provides a single-parent family program for both mothers and fathers, and offers counseling on a sliding-fee scale through the Family Outfitters Program. “We offer parenting classes through the Family Outfitters Program to anyone in the community who wants to take advantage of the service,” Lara said. The Love and Logic Parent class, offered in a sixhour session, teaches parents
how to raise responsible and respectful children who are fun to be around. Two classes are coming up on Oct. 16 and Nov. 13. The cost is $35 per person plus $10 for a class workbook. The agency also participates in the state’s Twogether in Texas program, which offers a discount on marriage license fees to couples who complete eight hours of premarital education.
