he University of North Texas College of Music has planned a buffet of music for its gala dinner, a fundraiser for its scholarship program. Billed as “Opera’s Greatest Hits,” the evening is both a preview of the student talent in the college’s performance program, and the scope of the program’s teaching and opera direction. The collegiate company regularly performs operas in their native languages, performed with supertitles. Music will be performed by the UNT Symphony Orchestra. Tickets for the concert and dinner are $100 per person or

Big Harp stops in Denton Thursday at Dan’s Silverleaf behind White Hat, an avant folk-rock record that will send the band to venues in nine western states. Drootin-Senseney paused in a Toys R Us parking lot to talk about Omaha Girls Rock, a Nebraska day camp she founded that employs other local female musicians to help girls ages 8-18 find the same power in music that she has. Q: Why choose Omaha for a Girls Rock! chapter? Didn’t the girls show up already indoctrinated by their cool parents? A: My music career has always pretty much been based in Omaha. I never
made a dime until I started playing with bands in Omaha. … People are so inspired there, they really latch on to new things. There was one girl [during the camp’s launch in July] who mentioned Zooey Deschanel [of She & Him] when we asked about their favorite performers, but the rest mostly said they loved Taylor Swift. We showed them clips of PJ Harvey, Sleater-Kinney — they loved it. When they started writing their songs, you could tell they took inspiration. They were a lot more open-minded than I remember being as a teenager. Q: You’ve mentioned in interviews before that you encountered sexism as a young musician. What did that look like? A: One example is back when I was playing with Bright Eyes more, a few different times I ran into girls that didn’t like me too much because they thought I was dating Conor [Oberst, the frontman]. If I was a girl in

Big Harp bassist’s passion for music fills her life — and fits her family, too hen Stefanie Drootin-Senseney was 15, her brother took her to see a band called Firehose. The singer, Mike Watt, didn’t play guitar — he played bass. Mean, funked-up slap bass. “I just thought, ‘That was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,’” said Drootin-Senseney, who grew up in Los Angeles. “I went to a pawnshop and bought a bass.” More than 10 years later, Drootin-Senseney says she “owes everything to music”: a wealth of confidence and experience performing and recording with bands like She & Him, Bright Eyes and Azure Ray; a best friend — her husband and Big Harp bandmate, Chris Senseney; and a lifestyle that fits everything she loves, including her

the band, I must be dating Conor. He’s like a brother — never have I dated any members of the band! Q: What values that transcend music are you hoping to pass on to young girls? A: We are human beings, and we’re women, and we can do anything that we want to do. Our minds are so powerful and important. … Women working together is a really important thing. A lot of times women are pinned against each other — when you work together, what amazing things you can create. There were some little arguments that happened in naming the bands, for instance. In one case, there were four girls, two against two [regarding the band name Trees]. One girl was getting ready to quit the band. One of the girls said, “I don’t know, I just don’t like Trees.” And that was it. They called the band I Just Don’t Like Trees. — Lyndsay Knecht

on’t be fooled by the “disco” part of Denton’s A Disco for Ferns. Nary a computer-generated beat nor a gal-on-the-prowl purr are to be found in the music made by the local duo. A Disco for Ferns is T. Blackheart on drums and extra-screamy vocals and Gonzo Bomb on bass and — what shall we call it? — yips, huffs and yowls. The two musicians cite Queen, David Bowie and KISS as influences, but the pair sacrifice the melody of their influences for volume and streamof-consciousness anti-poetry.

ith NRBQ, you should expect a distinctly American cocktail — a Tchaikovsky piano concerto recast as a country tune; a dash of zydeco; a pinch of jazz, and enough rock to keep hips swaying. The four-piece plays Dan’s Silverleaf on Friday night. With anchor member Terry Adams on keyboards, Scott Ligon on guitar and vocals, Pete Donnelly on bass and vocals, and Conrad Choucroun on drums, the band is shopping a new album around the country. haron Benge kept A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur on the back burner when she read the play a few years back. Playwright Tennessee Williams penned Creve Coeur in 1978, after Broadway had shunned him as a burnout whose best work was behind him. It’s rarely produced, but Benge said it seemed like the right time to produce the show at Texas Woman’s University. “After coming off of the [Edinburgh Festival Fringe] in Scotland, I started looking for something that was not too expensive,” Benge said. “It’s a four-person show on one set, which is a successful formula for professional companies in the current economy.” Creve Coeur also had the meaty stuff a college theater director craves. “I always look for something that offers some training for the students, and it also has to be stimulating for me,” she said. Creve Coeur fit the bill, and it’s the first show since Benge has been directing the theater program that features an all-woman cast. The play is about four women in the 1930s wrestling with loneliness. High school civics teacher Dorothea, or Dottie, is at the center of the story. She’s a Blanche DuBois character who is waiting for a call from a man she thinks is her husband-to-be. Her roommate, the simple and hard-of-hearing Bodey, wants Dorothea to marry her twin brother, Buddy. Dorothea intends to leave the careworn efficiency apartment and move in with Helena, a spinster schoolteacher with a sharp tongue and fussy standards. The three women meet Sophie Gluck, a German immigrant who has just arrived to occupy her late mother’s apartment. Sophie is terrified of being alone, and though she speaks no English, she tries to connect with these three women. See CREVE COEUR on 10

Creve Coeur — French for “heartbreak” or “broken heart” — itself is an amusement park (near a lake shaped like half of a heart) in the working-class part of St. Louis, and on this Sunday morning, a trip to the park could change lives. “Each one of these women is distinctively strong,” Benge said. “And as a group, they are extraordinarily diverse. All of them are trying to come to terms with the loneliness they face. “You know, nothing really happens in this show. It’s a character-driven piece. But there’s not one character up there that someone won’t connect with. We all experience loneliness.” Theater faculty member Rhonda Gorman was charged with designing the cramped, shabby apartment where the four women meet for coffee and to press their emotional agendas. As in all his work, Williams’ environs are as important as the characters. “We really looked at the script when we started talking about the set,” Gorman said. “That’s something I always do. Study the script, and look at the characters. The script mentions that when one of the characters walks into Bodey and Dottie’s apartment and puts on her sunglasses. I told Sharon, ‘I’m seeing yellow.’ Sharon said she was, too.” The apartment living room is eye-biting yellow, and the walls are scattered with sunflower stickers. Gorman decides to use cut-outs in the design instead of creating a literal apartment. Walls and windows stop, giving both openness and some abstraction to balance out Williams’ trademark realism. Actress and third-year TWU graduate student Taylor Reed said the play has given the cast and its directors plenty of room for research and analysis. She plays the old maid schoolteacher Helena Brookmire. “I would say she’s the villain of the piece,” Reed said. “She has her goal in mind when she comes to the apartment. She’s very one-dimensional, almost so much that I’ve been trying to flesh her out a bit. I think she

doesn’t want to be successful because of a man, and she thinks Dorothea is a little weak.” Reed said during the early rehearsals for the show, she looked for spots in the action where she could soften Helena’s sharp edges. Reed agreed with Benge that Williams writes his female characters with convincing depth and often painful realism. When Williams created damsels — like Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire or Alma in Summer and Smoke — it’s not to make men more heroic. Williams’ women expose human frailty and pathetic vulnerability. When a damsel has aged past her prime years without getting married, she’s both a victim of her own delusions and the patriarchy’s double-edged sword. Between the opening and final scenes, the playwright also lays out the conflicts that dog women’s relationships, which are often cooperative and competitive. “I think this show explores both sides of women’s relationships,” Reed said. “Helena wants something from Dottie. She wants to split the rent on this expensive apartment. On the other side of the coin, Bodey would like Dottie to be part of her family forever. Dottie’s stuck in the middle.” At the center of nearly all the relationships is a secret. While Dottie waits for that fateful call from her suitor — who happens to be her boss — Bodey and the others know the call won’t

OPENING FRIDAY
The Big Year (##1/2) You’d have to really love birding as much as the guys here do to enjoy this strained buddy comedy to its fullest potential. Except for some lovely scenery and a few lively interactions between the three stars — Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black — this feels like one long, cross-country schlep. And in the pursuit of what? The title of spotting the most bird species in North America during a calendar year — which quickly grows repetitive as Martin (as a retiring corporate CEO), Wilson (as a contractor and the reigning champ) and Black (as a divorced, cubicle-dwelling newbie) go to extremes to chase each other around and race against the clock. Rated PG, 99 minutes. — The Associated Press Gun Hill Road (##1/2) Enrique (Esai Morales) leaves prison after three years and returns home to his wife Angela (Judy Reyes) and teenage son Michael (Harmony Santana). In Enrique’s absence, Michael has grown up enough to be struggling with his sexuality to the point that he considers a sex change. This twist obviously causes tension in the family, confusing the macho Enrique as much as Michael. Well-executed first film from Rashaad Ernesto Green. Rated R, 88 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Incendiary: The Willingham Case Documentary about Todd Willingham, who was tried, convicted and executed for setting fire to his Corsicana home while his three young children were inside in 1991. Several expert witness and scientific evidence not available at the time of his trial all point to Willingham’s innocence, while the personal testimonies of his ex-wife and trial lawyer suggest his guilt. The only certainty is that Rick Perry and the Texas Forensic Science Commission come off as looking laughably anti-science. Not rated, 102 minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. — B.A. Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness (###1/2) Surprisingly engaging documentary about Sholem Aleichem, the pen name for the 19th century Yiddish writer who wrote the stories that became the source for Fiddler on the Roof. Using expert interviews, archival footage, abundant still photos and spoken written accounts, director Joseph Dorman vividly recreates the writer’s life, as well as life in Ukrainian and

Dance, dance evolution ‘Footloose’ is fancy free of the 1984 original’s corniness he new Footloose does everything it needs to do. It’s a vibrant youth musical that will appeal to audiences who haven’t seen the 1984 original. And it has enough charm and life to it to compete with the memory of the earlier version. Director Craig Brewer is attempting a direct translation here, to make a new Footloose that means the same thing to today’s audiences that the earlier Footloose meant to 1984. He’s not trying to rethink it;
he’s just trying to replace the old parts, because the truth is, the old vehicle needed a tuneup. Newcomer Kenny Wormald is not Kevin Bacon, but he’s a better dancer and, like Bacon, he has the good sense not to play young Ren McCormack as the essence of cool. Ren is just a city kid who, following his mother’s death, relocates to a small town in Texas to live with his aunt and uncle and finish high school. But because he’s
more worldly and comes from outside, he represents the fresh air of another perspective. No sooner than arriving in town, Ren gets a ticket for playing his car radio too loud, and he comes up against school authorities who say things like, “I don’t care what the rap music people say, marijuana is wrong.” Half the town is proud to conform to narrow convention; the other half is exhausted at the prospect of fighting it. And Ren is the guy who comes from out of nowhere and says this is crazy. He speaks for the audience. In Footloose, the dusty old town has been made even worse by the recession. Gloom hangs over it, part economic in origin, and partly the result of a

Opens Oct. 14 at the Dallas and Plano Angelika. — B.A. The Thing (##1/2) This prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 monster movie of the same name lives up to its generic title. It delivers a repetitive assault of gross creature effects and action done far better in Carpenter’s version. From first-time director Matthijs van Heijningen, the prequel explains how an alien entity
frozen in the Antarctic ice got loose at a Norwegian research station, consuming and replicating the humans so that paranoid frenzy takes hold over who’s real and who’s not. Rated R, 103 minutes. — AP Toast This biopic about food writer Nigel Slater (Freddie Highmore) is set in 1960s Britain, when a teenage Slater resents his new stepmother but finds solace in food and cooking. car accident a few years before that killed students coming back from a dance. In reaction to that, the town passed ordinances enforcing a curfew on minors and the outlawing of public dancing. Alas, the town’s officials and even its reverend — played by Dennis Quaid with nary a twinkle — weren’t up on their Genesis, or else they would have realized: As soon as you tell people what they absolutely must not do, that’s all they want to do. As the reverend’s rebellious daughter, newcomer Julianne Hough (Dancing With the Stars) is a major asset. Also not to be overlooked is Miles Teller, so somber as the troubled teenager in Rabbit Hole but here transformed into Ren’s good ol’ boy best buddy. and then go home and spend the night together. They see each other the next day, go to a bar again, take drugs, visit an amusement park and then spend the night together again. Then, on the verge of a beautiful friendship, one of them goes away for two years. Honest and entertaining enough, but not particularly insightful or revelatory. Not rated, 97 minutes.
