This garment, designed by a University of North Texas fashion design student, is inspired in color, shape and texture by peacocks. Sure, much of the gown is the snowy color of the peahen, but the print and ruffles are rich green-blue. The gown achieves a painterly feel with painted peacock plumes, and the texture of the dress suggests the lively strands that make up a feather. The gown is one of the first you see in “Spotlight on Fashion and Watercolor at UNT,” an exhibit that shows the nuances shared by painters and designers.

Wardrobe full of art Designers, painters share downtown exhibit

ashion junkies have one more reason to visit the downtown Denton Square — besides the boutiques that feature hip clothes “repurposed” from garments from days gone by. “Spotlight on Fashion and Watercolor at UNT” opens today at UNT on the Square, the 2,400-square foot arts space at 109 N. Elm St. The university’s fashion design program is housed in the UNT College of Visual Arts & Design, something not every collegiate fashion program can say. The university also houses the Texas Fashion Collection, a nonprof-

it agency that preserves historically significant clothes and designs. The program earned some national attention during the sixth season of Project Runway, when UNT graduate Shirin Askari held her own in the fashion design reality show. The exhibits showcase recent student work in fashion, including at least one garment made from paper. Pieces in the gallery show the students’ perspective, inventiveness, and skill with material and sewing. Dresses with knee-skimming hemlines abound, with at least one example of structured outerwear (read: jackets, coats and the like).

Student painters show off their views of the world in watercolor, a medium that can be temperamental. An opening reception for the exhibits is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the gallery. Not only will visitors get to eye the detail work, both on the clothing and on the paper, but they’ll get to see student designs in motion, as models will show additional garments. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and on Friday; 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. — Lucinda Breeding

Drama puts power struggle behind bars Three men are in a Louisiana prison in the 1950s. Green Eyes, Lefranc and Maurice struggle for status and power — which are determined in part by their crimes — in Sundown Collaborative Theatre’s latest drama.

The play, based on a concept by founding company member Cody Lucas, unfolds as a dream. Travis Stuebing plays Green Eyes, Robert Linder plays Maurice and Lucas plays Lefranc. The drama is collabo-

Old flames never die in ‘Private Lives’

Noel Coward knew how to frame the timeless battle of the sexes. He mapped out the tenuous man-woman dynamics in his popular 1930 comedy, Private Lives. Texas Woman’s University’s theater arts program opens its 2010-11 season with a staging of Coward’s romp about a divorced couple who take their new honeymoons — with their new spouses — at the same hotel at the same time. The divorcees, Amanda and Elyot, get that old feeling again when they reunite, and decide to run away to Paris. Once there, the two start to see that the conflicts that broke them up haven’t gone anywhere. Their jilted lovers, Sibyl and Victor, pursue them to the City of Love. Fraternity of sound An international music fraternity will be having its annual benefit musicale Sunday. The Denton Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota’s benefit will feature Sundance Brass, which plays chamber music for brass instruments, at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Denton, 1114 W. University Drive. The ensemble includes John Holt and Keith Johnson on trumpet, William Scharnberg on French horn, Jimmy Clark on trombone and Don Little on tuba. The ensemble plays music ranging from Renaissance, baroque and romantic periods to contemporary compositions of the 20th and 21st centuries. The members of the ensemble are also members of the Dallas Opera Ochestra and have performed in other en-

sembles, including the Fort Worth Symphony, the Florence Opera, the Berlin Radio Symphony, the Mexico City Philharmonic, the Dallas Symphony, the Dallas Bach Society, Fort Worth Early Music, the Orchestra of New Spain and the New Hampshire Music Festival. King and Bob Dylan, it’s still about the music, not the glory. “You realize that having an ego is counterproductive to what you’re trying to do because it prevents you from being able to really get into your art enough,” he said. “If you’re too focused on yourself, you’re not going to be focused on your music.”

The Denton Benefit League is planning a “fun party,” says co-chairwoman Karen Milnes, complete with tapas at lunchtime and a tequila tasting in the evening, plus a raffle, balloon pop and silent auction. The event is also one of the Denton Benefit League’s big annual fundraisers for its grants program that gives thousands of dollars in financial assistance to area nonprofits. “Our theme this year is ‘Every Day’s a Holiday,’ which really opens it up,” said Jackie Jackson, co-chairwoman for the event and president-elect of the league. “The tabletops historically have been beautiful and elegant,” said Milnes, who has been planning this event since last March with the help of the organization’s 117 members. This year she expects more variety, including some that will be “whimsical” and “crazy.” “It’s not all Thanksgiving and Christmas tables,” she said. So far, individuals and members of the business community, arts organizations and nonprofit agencies have created 44 tabletop entries, which will be on display for both the evening and daytime events. Karen Milnes’ husband, Robert Milnes, a sculptor and dean of the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design, donated his talents to the fundraiser. “DBL is such a great organization and they help so many people, it’s easy to be involved,” he said. “[President] Gail Graves asked me about doing a table this year, and she is so gracious, who could say no?” His “Texas Twister — Kick up Your Heels” is created with copper tubing, wooden rods, insulation and his collection of cowboy boots. “I have 18 pair and used 10 of them in the tornado,” Robert Milnes said. “A number of them are vintage pairs of

He warns partygoers: “Please don’t take the boots out of the tornado for dancing after the tequila tasting!” Speaking of tequila, the Denton Country Club patio will be transformed into a tequila bar for the evening, decorated with twinkling lights and handmade Mexican paper flowers. For $20, partygoers can have four tastes of organic, 100 percent blue agave tequila made by Republic Tequila. Dinner includes a carne asada carving station, black bean quesadillas,

grilled chicken flautas, roasted grilled vegetables, Mexican pineapple salad and sopapillas with honey and chocolate created by the country club’s chef, Guy Sanders. Nighttime attendees can place bids in the silent auction or try their chance at winning the Sensational Raffle prize, a 14-karat white gold, white and black diamond bracelet donated by Ehrhart’s Jewelers. Raffle tickets are $10 each or $60 for 10. New this year is the balloon pop for $10 each, and everyone’s a winner. There will be a daytime-only silent auction as well. The lunch crowd will have the opportunity to try an assortment of Spanish-inspired appetizers, called tapas, served both warm and cold. Menu items include shrimp and crab with guacamole, smoked chicken with mango salsa, seared cumin beef with Boursin on baguettes, gazpacho minishooters and a chocolate fountain. The daytime event was moved to an earlier time this year “to make sure [it] can be attended by people who have full-time jobs,” Karen Milnes said. In the past, Sensational Settings was billed as an afternoon tea party and an evening soiree. This year, organizers hope to bring new blood to the event and to the organization with

MEXICAN PINEAPPLE SALAD 1 pineapple, peeled and diced 1/2 pound jicama, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch pieces 1 avocado, cut into cubes 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper Toss together all ingredients. Makes 4 to 6 servings. GAZPACHO MINI MARTINIS 4 cups tomato juice 1 onion, minced 1 green bell pepper, minced 1 cucumber, chopped 2 cups chopped tomatoes 2 green onions, chopped 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon dried tarragon 1 clove garlic, minced 1 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 teaspoon white sugar Salt and pepper to taste In a blender or food processor, combine all ingredients. Blend until well combined but still slightly chunky. Pour into your favorite martini glasses and chill at least two hours before serving. Makes 10 servings.

The music is a highlight, but the script is far too predictable and preachy with its vague lessons about honesty and integrity. George Strait, who starred in the first film, returns in a cameo as himself. Rated PG, 111 minutes. — T.J. Red (##) Formulaic action comedy with Bruce Willis as an ex-CIA agent who is RED — retired, extremely dangerous. He abducts a woman (MaryLouis Parker) and then gathers together his old team (Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Brian Cox, Helen Mirren) for the cliched “one last job.” Nothing new or particularly interesting here, and a waste of a great cast. ‘Stone’ crumbles despite solid work by DeNiro, Norton

Such weighty concepts as the meaning of life, free will, determinism, and future and past lives are broached at some point in Stone, a new psychological drama. But, despite all these hefty issues, the big battle in Stone comes between two real-life heavyweights. Two of the best actors of different generations face off in Stone, and, as long as the film focuses on their conflict, all goes well. But director John Curran, who works from Angus MacLachlan’s script, veers off instead into the film’s pivotal yet implausible plot device. Robert DeNiro plays Jack Mabry, a parole officer operating inside a prison, counting out the days of the month left until his retirement. He recommends, or rejects, convicts for parole, including Gerald Creeson (Edward Norton). Creeson is called “Stone,” a fast-talking, foul-

And if Jack does not parole Creeson, it looks like Stone will not make it much longer. The initial scenes of these two together crackle, creating the thought that it would be fine if the film never left Jack’s office. But, unfortunately, it does, when Stone’s wife Lucette (Milla Jovovich), on the urging of her husband, starts calling Jack at

home, much to the annoyance and surprise of Jack’s wife (Francis Conroy). Before long, Jack and Lucette are meeting for trysts, while Stone kills time by manufacturing a spiritual longing, one that initially looks as phony as Lucette’s craving for Jack. Once these two dynamics arise, Stone fritters away its believability. Would a pious probation officer who has seen every scam and artificial conversion imagi-

nable fall for the slick talk of a jabbering hunk of trash? Various plot lines play out, few of which ring true. And even after the narrative has run its course, the movie’s aim is still unclear. No other contemporary actor besides Norton could conceivably play Stone. He immerses himself into his part, looking it, sounding it and even making us believe in his dynamic character. And, by now, DeNiro has settled into his roles of crotchety older men. To play between these two, an actress of little import was needed, one who would not threaten to take the attention or spotlight away from her two mega co-stars. rthur Dong has put his curiosities and his observations into his documentary films, and has a body of work that examines identity, and how it affects culture. Dong is a native of San Francisco, and at age 16, shot his first film in his bedroom. Public probed sexual mores and violence at his high school. The filmmaker uses his films to represent and examine his identity as a Chinese-American and an openly gay man. In 1982, he documented his mother’s immigration to America from China in Sewing Woman, and saw it nominated for an Academy Award. The filmmaker brings four of his films to the University of

Last Saturday a crowd gathered, tape measures came out and cameras snapped photos to mark the historic event at the Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home Fall Family Festival as Kolache Haven unveiled what owner Mike Boyle hopes will be the world’s largest kolache. Some of you may be thinking: What in the world is a kolache? They’ve been around for more than 300 years. If you’ve ever driven through Central Texas, you’ve likely seen bill-
